We are sad to share that Jasmine our leopard tortoise featured in this video passed away yesterday, just 1 day before her 1 year anniversary with us. Unfortunately when their shell is that deformed it causes issues and strain on other organs. Let Jasmine be the reason you do all of your research on how to properly care for an animal before you get it ❤

I'm upset about jasmine. But I agree, shaming the owners will only make them afraid to hand them over. We're all human and capable of mistakes. So don't be afraid to get help.

It's pretty unexcusable in the age of the internet for this kind of thing to be happening. If it was the 1970's you could sort of understand people just not having the care information available to them, but nowadays when you can take five minutes to google 'should my tortoise's shell look like this?' there really is no excuse. I'm so glad these animals have ended up with people who can provide them with some relief and appropriate care

Jasmine's life was full of a lot of struggle. It's awful to imagine what it's like for her (and other animals in her situation) to have a body that's completely failing. At least she got to live the last part of her life taken care of by people who were doing everything they could for her.
I hope this (and similar educational efforts) lead to people taking better care of their pets, so that they can all have the healthiest spines possible.

Oh my gosh! When I saw this video I started crying. I have a leopard hatchling and have spent more time researching and caring for the lil dude than I have studying for grad school! I just subscribed and started following you guys tonight because you popped up on my feed but I love what you guys are doing and one day it’s my dream to have a tortoise sanctuary to take in tortoises that people fail to realize how big they get and abandon them. Thanks for giving me hope in my dreams and keep up the good work! RIP Jasmine…breaks my heart but the only thing to say is she’s no longer in pain anymore. I don’t understand why anyone would get an animal that they cannot care for :(

They were or the slider turtle was lucky it wasn’t a female, would have become egg bound and died, sadly!

  • @comedianmattrossey
    @comedianmattrossey Рік тому

The Female Leopard Tortoise looks like MBD, which would be caused from improper diet along with no UVA UVB exposure, (An inside tortoise).
Wow the Central American Slider is bad.
I have a central American Slider female (Pepita), 2 years old on August 7th, (her actual hatch date), and she's bigger than average Central American Sliders.
From what I've researched this isn't a bad thing and genetically happens. I have also made sure to give her a varied diet of snails, shrimp, different kinds of insects, live fish as well as frozen fish and shrimp so that she has protein and calcium ingested, but the majority of her food is plant based, no fruit, she won't eat fruit of any kind, I've tried her with blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, (as a treat), but never takes them.
Her everyday staple food of Nutrifin Bug Bites for Turtles, Nutrifin Max Turtle Pellets, or Flukers Buffet Blend for Aquatic Turtles, (which she doesn't seem crazy about), switched up randomly by the day.
I have a 150 WATT UVA UVB light on for her during the day and at night its off, (it's on a timer, on for 14 hours a day to try to mimic the daylight hours in Central America where they originate from). She basks sometimes, but mostly stays in the water which is a normal habit for them, and yes she has a basking spot. I'm just in the process of upgrading her aquarium to a 65 G, which will be good for maybe 2 to 3 years as she has started to slow down in growth. Oh, from front to back of her carapace is 9 inches long with a perfectly shaped dome and a solid plastron. Vet says if I keep up on her care the way I do now, she will definitely outlive me and that she's one of the best kept turtles he has seen with no issues at all.
It probably helps that I've had many snakes, lizards, birds, and typical other family pets in my life, but Pepita is my 1st turtle. In the upgrade to the larger tank I am getting a rescued male Central American Slider that is finally back in good health after nearly a year.
The store where I got Pepita from, the male was dropped off outside their door in a fountain they had after hours on a weekend, thankfully they are in a mall. He had shell rot all over, eyes were swollen shut and infected, couldn't eat on his own but had to be force fed for the first 2 months after being dropped off. He wasn't in good shape at all and we thought he wasn't going to make it.
Totally a wrong diet issue. The store owner Jenny who is a good friend of mine worked wonders with him. His shell is actually beginning to dome more, which is evidence that he was lacking enough calcium and UVA UVB, but he's doing much better now. I will be taking him once I get Pepita moved into her new aquarium and he will get her old aquarium until he's gotten healthier and then will join Pepita in her new aquarium.

We really need better regulation and funding to protect all living beings who are vulnerable and treated as commodities. If sellers were required to educate buyers and buyers to take classes a lot of this could be avoided. Just the requirement would prevent spur of the moment decisions. In an ideal world people would research animals they acquire but the world is not ideal.

Great video. I worked at a sanctuary for a while, now I’m at a pet store, and the one constant throughout my career with animals has been seeing just the horrible way turtles and tortoises are treated by people. I have to say that it is extremely rare that I’ve ever met someone with a pet Chelonian who didn’t regret it in some way. And unfortunately they are so durable that they really can wilt in horrible conditions for years and years. I feel like every rescue will end up with some abandoned grassland tortoises and neglected sliders before too long!

I remember when my sister got a red slider turtle. She didn't understand how much the right equipment cost. She bought a filter that was way too small because it was cheap, and it barely worked. She quickly got tired of the turtle, and I started taking care of it.
Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to get a bigger filter, so I would have to constantly clean the tank. The filter was so small that the water would get dirty almost immediately. After a while, I got tired of taking care of an animal I didn't even want, so we found the turtle a new loving home. I would love to try to care for another turtle again when I have the funds.

I don't think that's just diet related with Theodore, it looks like he spent the earliest part of his development indoors with no UVB bulb and probably no basking area. You'd be surprised how common it is for people to buy tortoises and have no idea how incredibly important it is for them to have the right heat and UVB - without it it doesn't even matter that much what their diet is because the nutrients from their food can't be processed to help them grow healthy bones and shells. I met someone (friend of a friend) who had a tortoise that they fed nothing but romaine lettuce (and occasional dusting of calcium powder), which is obviously a terrible diet, but because it had the right heat and lighting it somehow managed to use the small amount of nutrients it could get to grow and only have a small amount of pyramiding. It was underweight and wasn't able to walk on the flat part of it's back feet because it simply didn't have the strength to lift the heavy shell properly, but the shell wasn't what I would consider deformed and was solid, and thankfully a couple of years later with a better diet it's doing much better. I think in somewhere like Florida UVB isn't always thought of straight away because you're able to keep most tortoise species outside year round, but there are so many sad cases in places where the weather isn't great in which tortoises are kept in room temperature enclosures with no UVB and it kills them so slowly and painfully.
