Well it's not meant for that. It's a basic work truck or farm truck. It'll get you through the snow when you need it. 2wd that is if you have sandbags in the bag but it's not an off road truck. I see a lot of personal buyers with uptrimmed models, however the majority of sales are likely from fleet and commercial applications, not to mention the many other lower trims sold to private consumers. That being said, there is substance to a luxury truck. Those using the trucks capabilities over long distances or long periods of time surely appreciate the amenities that adorn such pricey vehicles. However I'm with Jimmy that I'll never really want or desire to have one, and like my utility vehicle for just that purpose.
Love always it locks the rear differential so the tires spin at the same speed all the time. That way if one tire loses traction the other doesn’t start spinning. It’s good for off road

Locker is a common colloquialism for limited slip differentials. True lockers are typically found in high performance vehicles such as rock crawler, drag racing, and mud bogging. Nowadays we have electronically or pnuematically controlled differential locking devices that allow daily driven trucks and Jeeps (most typically) to be able to navigate a parking lot and scale mountains with the flip of a switch.
in creeping offroading they will overheat way faster then you think possible. i live in an area with lots of mountains and automatic transmissions last half of what a manual one will

Thanks. This was useful. The base Frontier manual trans is a good buy, some used ones are great buys. Seeing your assessment of it's limits on poorly maintained fire trails helps me to decide if this suits my summer mountain camping needs.

I don't view it as a lack of power. Power really doesn't mean much if you have good traction and take it slow. My father had a 1985 Nissan hardbody, very similar to that truck but it had 4x4. We used to drive that thing all over the mountains in Utah. My dad was building a rock wall, so we would load that truck up with rocks and head back down. That truck never ever missed a beat, even with only four cylinders.
Now you guys need to start taking more rwd basic Work Trucks up GMH!! Like a Colorado WT, ext can 4cyl, manual or automatic! But at least with the available auto locking rear differential, that you can get in any Chevy truck! I'll be willing to bet that truck makes it up, or further than any other!
I was out driving in the backwoods the other day and I have a Pro 4X. I came down a hill and reached a massive pool of water and I didn't know how deep it was. It's the middle of winter, it's cold and it's late in the day. I get to the waters edge but decide to back out since I'm solo and there's zero cell reception for miles. I put it in reverse and all I'm doing is spinning. I have traction devices as everyone who goes off-road should, but still once I put it in 4x4 it was smooth sailing. 4x4 gives you peace of mind and the ability to go places that oftentimes are a no go zone for 2WD or sketchy at best.
Even with the TRAC OFF light illuminated the ABLS system will still apply the brake where theres wheel slip to send power to the tire with traction, On a steep hill without much torque you will stall out. The only way to disable it completely is to pull the fuse. On the bright side Nissan did a nice job with the VDC programming for regular driving. Fully disabling the system in the Pro-4x trim is as simple as selecting 4wd low and engaging the locker. The 4.0L 6spd trucks tractor along nicely with the beefy dual mass flywheel, Would still love to see you guys test one before they go extinct!
I use to take my 2004 up hills all the time. doable because it was a manual and you can crawl pretty good in 1st or 2nd gear. It isn't a full time offroad truck but it can still get you places. How small it is was another factor of why I could go so many places.
It would be interesting to see a video with the Tacoma Prerunner TRD offroad. Its 2wd with a rear locker but it has the same chassis and suspension as the 4wd model. With good tires and a good driver this truck is pretty impressive imo.
In those dry / rock conditions add a simple leveling kit for a little more ground clearance with some 31” aggressive tires and it would do much better than those 235 radials made for pavement but hey it’s a great little truck and does what most anyone running to Home Depot etc.. needs it to do
I had a 2012 Frontier SV King Cab V6 2WD that I bought new. LOVED IT!! Good power and quite a nice jumper with its super springy suspension. 2 years later I got married and she had 3 kids. The Frontier got traded for an Altima (I know... I know...). Here it is 6 years later, divorced, and traded the Altima for.... you guessed it... a 2019 Frontier. Im back baby! Im back!

Nice little test there gents! Sure it's not a pickup meant for off-roading, but it's good to see what a 2wd truck can actually do. I've thought about throwing a locker in my F-250 and doing some light off-roading similar to that with it just for a weekend camping trip, or similar. Nice job!

I got a pre cert 2017 frontier with 17.533.00 . had and still have issues with my emergency brake. Dealer can't seem to get it right maybe due to still having the warranty ?? any suggestions welcome.

This is cool and all, but 2WD is kinda out of it's element. How about showing us a 4cyl 4wd truck? My biggest gripe when shopping for a tacoma a few years ago was that 99% of the reviews were focused the TRD OffRoad and TRD Pro, but non one the base 4cyl 4wd.

Why the hell does he keep talking about power? That truck could lose another 50hp and still be able to make it up a hill. The truck has 4.10's and a low first gear and the wheels are clearly spinning, so it's not a power issue, it's a traction issue. A few sandbags in the bed would have made the video far less dramatic.
Nice video! My father´s truck, the old brother of your Frontier, is with some good Cooper Tyres A/T 33 inches and with i´ts 4.27 rear end, the truck can handle almost everything. Next step for you can be to take it trhow the ike Gaunglet! With the truck I told you about a year ago I tow - hawl an overall weight of 4200 pounds (1500 ponuds on the back of the truck and 2700 at towing the trailer, 270 pounds of tounge weight) ; an very exceded GVWR of 7800 pounds over it´s 6040 manufacturer limit. I´m not proud of that, certenly it was unsafe, but I take all the preventions and it was a safe journey. It was just for test that small truck capacity. Hope you read this. Saludos! P.d. The manual says it can tow at 5000 pounds (which I dont really trust), but at least I was betreen the safe ranges, just for the common sense it was exceded.
adolfo abhurtadoc I e always liked the challenge of hauling a max load in any truck. Back in 2004, when my 2003 Dakota Reg Cab 4x4, 3.9 V6 5 speed manual, that I ordered with the 3:92 limited slip rear and HD cooling with tow package was new. I took a road trip from Massachusetts to a woodworking company outside of Lisbon Ohio, to pickup a load of knock down picnic tables. I rented a one way UHaul inclosed 16' trailer. I bought 60 tables, that were 110 lbs each! I loaded 12 in the bed laying down they were6'4" long, just short enough to close the tailgate. Payed flat were only 5" high, 40" wide. So the whole pile was only a few inches higher that the cab. I used two tarps and multiple stamps and a huge cargo net to cover and hold them down. The other 48, I loaded in the trailer that weighed about 6,000 lbs including the trailer. I did roll over a Cat Scale at just under 12,000 CGVW! So yes I was over a bit! But the truck and trailer rode level! As the truck was rated for 1,900 capacity! As ordered! With a 5,000 towing capacity! But I do believe the CGVWR was 9,500 lbs! I have to say I was able to maintain the 65 mph speed limit, even on the long hills on rt 80 in PA! Sure it was in third gear, just about floored, but it held the speed fine. As far a brakes were, not any problems and the trailer only had one axle and surge brakes! On the way out empty I was only able to just about get 20 mpg, coming back loaded heavy? No more than 14 mpg average. But no shortage of power, yes I could have used more, but it was adequate for the weight I had to control! The only thing I was worried about was tires as it was in the 90's and hot and humid! I had change the oil, and added a K&N CAI. But on that 1,000 mile plus trip, running heavy one way the truck never used and oil! That held true for the rest of the time I owned it. That was a fine truck, great work truck and play on the beach and off road truck, the only trouble I had over the eleven years of ownership was I had to replace the ball joints and tie rod ends! Plus brakes all around! Plus tires but that's all, oh I did upgrade the shocks to Edelbrock shocks , that all and not reall cause it needed them, but as an upgrade! I really line that truck. But Ram screwed the pooch on the Dakota and now I own a Colorado! Oh one more thing! I'm also sure that Dakota, in rwd could make it up GMH no problem! Maybe a little faster than a passenger would be comfortable, but it would make it! I did have 265/70 16 Toyo MT's on it.
Just bought a 2006 with a 4.0 V6 amd locking rear differential. It hauls ass up hill. Have yet to take it off road but it climbed mountain roads on payment like it was nothing.
"Mud & Snow Tires",...c'mon, my wheelbarrow has better tread profile than those . Put some REAL snow tires on it and see what happens. Now having said that I do realize that those real snow tires would not be great on paved highways with the temp at 90 degrees F, but if you're going for grip, then get the correct tire tread pattern. Then again, this Nissan 2WD pick up was not built with rugged hill climbing in mind,....they do make a Frontier that can easily climb that hill.
Needs automatic trans. Glad to see you try it with the 2wd. Take the gas ram 2wd up there! It's more fun in a 2wd where there's some danger of not making it.
Had plenty of power. Driver needs much more experience. In this rig when you activate traction control, it electronically limits how much throttle you can give. They came up with this to help those not knowing how to drive in slick conditions. Normally a light foot on throttle will reduce spinning of tires.
That was painful to watch. Did you not turn off the traction control? WOT and loosing speed like that tells me you left the traction control on. My 2015 Frontier S won't climb a loose surface with the traction control on. I learned this first hand in Northern Nevada.
I know I have the same problem with my Nissan frontier all because the General grabber HTS they are not at all a off-road tire they are 100% a street tire I would suggest any other tire then that one if you go take it 2WD Nissan frontier off-road
Who says you're supposed to off road a 2wd on all season tires. If you have all terrain tires like the bfg ko2s or general a/ts. It will climb through with a lesser struggle climbing up the hill.
I'm stuck between a 2wd and a 4wd silverado with the 5.3. I live in AZ and plan on taking my truck off road, not on any really difficult trails but still want to get a little dirty. Could I save the money and buy the 2wd and out fit it with some good all terrain tires or should I pick up the 4wd model?
RocHopn we drop our tires down to 10--15 psi while running the beach. Never had any bead problems. Even when back on the road, in town to a pump. But I'd never go over 35 mph! Plus my Silverado feels like a 1960 Cadillac on the road!
Just take any 2wd vehicle and weld the diff and it is offroad worthy. It might and prolly will be bested by a proper 4wd vehicle, but if it doesn't come with a locker your 2wder might even be better when unstucking.
Just stay in it! Oh no we have wheel spin so we must stop and assess the situation to figure out a better trajectory to approach this super dry dirt road going uphill, then we can jump for anti-climactic joy when, on the 15th attempt, we do what should have been done on the 2nd or 3rd! Buknoy Harabas they did but only up to 2014 they offered a 3.4 V6 on earlier models and a 4.0 V6 in later models every half ton trucks has had a V6 option from the 4.3 V6 in Silverado a 4.2 or 3.7 V6 in the F150 and a lot of V6 in the Rams
Buknoy Harabas it's what you usually find yes but the option was available so you can find then sometimes but they are far more rare found a 2.8 I4 Colorado with 4WD and Crew Cab my grandfather has a V6 extended cab long bed F150 but the crew cabs today are usually V8 however a plumbing company we frequently see runs a fleet of long bed V6 single cab Rams 2WD, V6 models are mostly in base model fleet vehicles
Buknoy Harabas actually cheap base models sell really well in fleets which is why they produce them why would a company runs expensive V8 trucks for their employees when they just go around a job site with tools and some materials. Also even in the HD truck fleets they run the big gas V8s in F350 and 3500 rather than a diesel because it's cheaper. Companies don't get one or two they buy dozens. I don't see fleets with platinum ecoboost F150 or a Chevy High Country 1500 with a 6.2

Do these come with a limited slip rear end or is it one legged. It looked like it was a LS diff. I'm guessing it was on traction control and the computer kept limiting power. Hence had it to the fkoor and the tires were not spinning. What a joke of a system. I had an 86 Nissan reg cab and a extra cab. They both had LS diffs. They would go right up that hill in stock form. I drive a lot different than you guys though. I now have an Xtreme S10 with a LS diff and it goes anywhere ground clearance isn't an issue. One legged diffs should not even be offered on any trucks. Don't buy it if it is one legged.
I have a 2006 Nissan Frontier with a v6 4 L engine , I make around 281 horsepower and I go off-roading everyday. She's only 2wd but I put toyo open country all terrain tires on it and it performs great. 100% that it could make it up that hill first try

4.10 gears on a 4 cylinder is like having 3.55 gears on a 4.0 v6 i think if this truck had 4.88 gears it would easily do this

Locker would be Great ; the auto trans torque converter would give up to about 2.7 : 1 addl reduction and can help . . .

I took a road trip from Massachusetts to a woodworking company outside of Lisbon Ohio, to pickup a load of knock down picnic tables. I rented a one way UHaul inclosed 16' trailer. I bought 60 tables, that were 110 lbs each! I loaded 12 in the bed laying down they were6'4" long, just short enough to close the tailgate. Payed flat were only 5" high, 40" wide. So the whole pile was only a few inches higher that the cab. I used two tarps and multiple stamps and a huge cargo net to cover and hold them down. The other 48, I loaded in the trailer that weighed about 6,000 lbs including the trailer. I did roll over a Cat Scale at just under 12,000 CGVW! So yes I was over a bit! But the truck and trailer rode level! As the truck was rated for 1,900 capacity! As ordered! With a 5,000 towing capacity! But I do believe the CGVWR was 9,500 lbs! I have to say I was able to maintain the 65 mph speed limit, even on the long hills on rt 80 in PA! Sure it was in third gear, just about floored, but it held the speed fine. As far a brakes were, not any problems and the trailer only had one axle and surge brakes! On the way out empty I was only able to just about get 20 mpg, coming back loaded heavy? No more than 14 mpg average. But no shortage of power, yes I could have used more, but it was adequate for the weight I had to control! The only thing I was worried about was tires as it was in the 90's and hot and humid! I had change the oil, and added a K&N CAI. But on that 1,000 mile plus trip, running heavy one way the truck never used and oil! That held true for the rest of the time I owned it. That was a fine truck, great work truck and play on the beach and off road truck, the only trouble I had over the eleven years of ownership was I had to replace the ball joints and tie rod ends! Plus brakes all around! Plus tires but that's all, oh I did upgrade the shocks to Edelbrock shocks , that all and not reall cause it needed them, but as an upgrade! I really line that truck. But Ram screwed the pooch on the Dakota and now I own a Colorado! Oh one more thing! I'm also sure that Dakota, in rwd could make it up GMH no problem! Maybe a little faster than a passenger would be comfortable, but it would make it! I did have 265/70 16 Toyo MT's on it.
Yall need to learn to work that clutch

Just bought a 2006 with a 4.0 V6 amd locking rear differential. It hauls ass up hill. Have yet to take it off road but it climbed mountain roads on payment like it was nothing.

"Mud & Snow Tires",...c'mon, my wheelbarrow has better tread profile than those . Put some REAL snow tires on it and see what happens. Now having said that I do realize that those real snow tires would not be great on paved highways with the temp at 90 degrees F, but if you're going for grip, then get the correct tire tread pattern.
Then again, this Nissan 2WD pick up was not built with rugged hill climbing in mind,....they do make a Frontier that can easily climb that hill.

Needs automatic trans. Glad to see you try it with the 2wd. Take the gas ram 2wd up there! It's more fun in a 2wd where there's some danger of not making it.
Had plenty of power. Driver needs much more experience. In this rig when you activate traction control, it electronically limits how much throttle you can give. They came up with this to help those not knowing how to drive in slick conditions. Normally a light foot on throttle will reduce spinning of tires.

If it was a V8 Hemi Ram. It would kill that entire hill. So basically it seems like even if you got 2wd. If you got torque and power. You're solid.

That was painful to watch. Did you not turn off the traction control? WOT and loosing speed like that tells me you left the traction control on. My 2015 Frontier S won't climb a loose surface with the traction control on. I learned this first hand in Northern Nevada.
With some better tires I am pretty sure that even with that gutless 4 banger it would have done fine.
I know I have the same problem with my Nissan frontier all because the General grabber HTS they are not at all a off-road tire they are 100% a street tire I would suggest any other tire then that one if you go take it 2WD Nissan frontier off-road

Chris Barr mud and snow is based on the tread to avoid ratio. iirc, it needs about 20% voids to be mud & snow

Who says you're supposed to off road a 2wd on all season tires. If you have all terrain tires like the bfg ko2s or general a/ts. It will climb through with a lesser struggle climbing up the hill.

I'm stuck between a 2wd and a 4wd silverado with the 5.3. I live in AZ and plan on taking my truck off road, not on any really difficult trails but still want to get a little dirty. Could I save the money and buy the 2wd and out fit it with some good all terrain tires or should I pick up the 4wd model?

I would have dropped the air pressure to about 13-15psi. The bead will hold at the pressure on GMH. the truck is not that heavy.
RocHopn we drop our tires down to 10--15 psi while running the beach. Never had any bead problems. Even when back on the road, in town to a pump. But I'd never go over 35 mph! Plus my Silverado feels like a 1960 Cadillac on the road!

Just take any 2wd vehicle and weld the diff and it is offroad worthy. It might and prolly will be bested by a proper 4wd vehicle, but if it doesn't come with a locker your 2wder might even be better when unstucking.

Buknoy Harabas they did but only up to 2014 they offered a 3.4 V6 on earlier models and a 4.0 V6 in later models every half ton trucks has had a V6 option from the 4.3 V6 in Silverado a 4.2 or 3.7 V6 in the F150 and a lot of V6 in the Rams
Buknoy Harabas it's what you usually find yes but the option was available so you can find then sometimes but they are far more rare found a 2.8 I4 Colorado with 4WD and Crew Cab my grandfather has a V6 extended cab long bed F150 but the crew cabs today are usually V8 however a plumbing company we frequently see runs a fleet of long bed V6 single cab Rams 2WD, V6 models are mostly in base model fleet vehicles
Buknoy Harabas actually cheap base models sell really well in fleets which is why they produce them why would a company runs expensive V8 trucks for their employees when they just go around a job site with tools and some materials. Also even in the HD truck fleets they run the big gas V8s in F350 and 3500 rather than a diesel because it's cheaper. Companies don't get one or two they buy dozens. I don't see fleets with platinum ecoboost F150 or a Chevy High Country 1500 with a 6.2

Do these come with a limited slip rear end or is it one legged. It looked like it was a LS diff. I'm guessing it was on traction control and the computer kept limiting power. Hence had it to the fkoor and the tires were not spinning. What a joke of a system. I had an 86 Nissan reg cab and a extra cab. They both had LS diffs. They would go right up that hill in stock form. I drive a lot different than you guys though. I now have an Xtreme S10 with a LS diff and it goes anywhere ground clearance isn't an issue. One legged diffs should not even be offered on any trucks. Don't buy it if it is one legged.

I have a 2006 Nissan Frontier with a v6 4 L engine , I make around 281 horsepower and I go off-roading everyday. She's only 2wd but I put toyo open country all terrain tires on it and it performs great. 100% that it could make it up that hill first try
