As a musician, it bothers me that everyone is arguing who did what better. Music shouldn't be a contest all the time (aka The Voice etc.). They must have a love for the song and in my opinion do it beautifully. That does not take anything away from the original. More music, less arguing people. XOXO
Arguing about music is like arguing to a friend that you can love your wife better than he can love his. It's a preposterous discussion, that skills need not apply. Music is like a puzzle piece and each of us has a different-shaped void within ourselves that can be filled with the music of our choosing.
TheWoodsugar As an artist, it bothers me that people believe that it's impossible to criticize art. It's a fairly easy thing to do; though, in this case, it is futile.
retsea1 It's not that art can't be criticized, it's that sometimes it shouldn't be. It's important to know when to look at it with a critical eye and when to just shut up and appreciate it.
How is it that I’ve just found this now (10 years later)!! The civil wars are a fantastic duo, have listened to them for years wish I’d come across earlier, what a gem
It's such a great song, but the essence here is the delicate harmony that these two created. They captured the imagination of the world for a short while. Duets are a tough act to maintain, with or without separate lives. They will always be magic. The magnetism they created in a close environment was breathtaking.
Right now... I smile and almost cry when hearing this song. Been conflicted a lot lately with something... and this song just makes me hear a voice that makes me smile. -sigh- Civil Wars always do an amazing job with songs, covers or not... They put amazing emotion into them...
dont you see that it is always her staring with hope and longing.. the way he looks at her is to simply acknowledge her. in every video she stares at him the same way, and he doesnt seem to reciprocate it. personally, i find it distracting....
The beauty here is the continuation of a perfectly wrote song by Elliot. Not if they captured exactly what Elliot Smith did. This is the definition of a cover. Keeping it alive.
I figure I better put my sad sap story because it's not sad, actually very beautiful to me. I had a girl 4 or 5 years ago that I fell absolutely in love with and it was amazing. Then of course, the devastating breakup of a 16 year old kid with a big heart. So I went back to a band that reminded me of strong feelings when they played music, The Civil Wars. Well I already knew about Barton Hallow, but then the rest slapped me silly with every tear I didn't believe I could shed anymore resting on my lap. Well after a few years, a new gf, and a new reason to cry over strong music music but no longer being able to build them up, I found myself in disbelief. One of the most passionate songs, Between the Bars, was of course a cover and a video I had already seen but for me to forget about it, have a new gf that had that song as a favorite song and be the original version.. it's amazing that love goes around in the way it does. I know that's a weird thing to share but it just blew my mind cause of the sweet memories this time instead of the bad ones.
It’s those looks that have always made me think there was more to their partnership and more to their breakup. Not that I think anything actually happened but I really do believe they got so close that out of respect they parted ways
I feel like nobody in the comments understands what 'artistic interpretation' is, LOL. Whenever an artist puts their work out there, people are always going to interpret it in their own, personal way, and that's a given. If these musicians thought it sounded like a love song, there's nothing wrong with that. Let them express it however they want; this version is just as valid as the original. And calm the hell down.
Drink up baby Stay up all night The things you could do You won't but you might The potential you'll be That you'll never see The promises you'll only make Drink up with me now And forget all about the pressure of days Do what I say and I'll make you okay And drive them away The images stuck in your head People you've been before That you don't want around anymore They push, shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still Drink up baby Look at the stars I'll kiss you again between the bars Where I'm seeing you there With your hands in the air Waiting to finally be caught Drink up one more time And I'll make you mine Keep you apart, deep in my heart Separate from the rest Where I like you the best And keeping the things you forgot People you've been before That you don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still
Of course he can! Might I remind you that this "Sirius Black" you speak of is actually renowned singer Stubby Boardman who was wrongfully incriminated for crimes he did not commit.
amen dude! I'm not a fan of the Civil Wars, yet I adore Elliott's songs, but you're right on. It's a beautiful song, and they sing it really well the way they want to, so kudos to them. Also Ivacqua sounds like a guitar snob, like that's a relevant thing.
Of course, nothing can ever amount to Elliot Smith's original of this song. As much as I love The Civil Wars, Elliot Smith just did this so perfectly, as it WAS his own. But no one can deny that this cover is beautifully done (as The Civil Wars have a tendency to do that). It's a great cover.
Good effort. Nothing ever will compare to Elliott, but those who try are brave. Us Elliott fans can be ruthless when people cover him poorly (or at all)

I always hate listening to new songs by artists I love for fear that it won't be like their other stuff and I'll be disappointed. Not with The Civil Wars. All their music is so great!
Always gives me chills... How synced they are ... How dark they take their covers... Or shall I make that past tense...
These two were magnetic. No one can argue that. Not even them. Which is why it hurt to much when it was over.
damn, i miss them together.
At least a couple times a month I still go through that. One can only hope that someday they can work everything our and work together again.
I love the Civil Wars. They have a hypnotic, haunting sound that I can't get enough of. They're the best duebt since Johnny and June, simply amazing.
Elliott Smith was such a genius of a songwriter, but hearing it in two-part harmony really adds a new dimension to it.
I thought that when i watched Elliott with Rose Melberg on "biggest lie" 2-13-96....beautiful....:)
Parvenu? Vous êtes française par hasard?
British hahaha ;) just appreciate french
I miss them so much. Their split still breaks my heart. 😢

***** god damn that was beautiful.
Sawyer Tilley well thank you!

I love the guy in the background trying desperately to hold his brains in his head.
I guess he is the sound engeering trying to listen in his headphone.

R.I.P Elliot Smith.... You are one of the best.... May you live in peace.....

John Paul is so mesmerizing. His voice, his face, his personality.... everything.
Didn't think it was possible to make Elliott's already beautiful song even more amazing
Right now... I smile and almost cry when hearing this song. Been conflicted a lot lately with something... and this song just makes me hear a voice that makes me smile. -sigh- Civil Wars always do an amazing job with songs, covers or not... They put amazing emotion into them...
12/2023 and I still miss them 😢
God, I love this duo. The chemistry.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, Joy and John Paul are so breathtakingly talented. I love this so much.
I've yet to listen to a Civil Wars song and not be completely enthralled. Beautiful, just beautiful.
The way they look at each other omfg
Right! Its what I dream of!!! XD
Emily Harris and yet they say there was only passion of music between them nothing romantic. .....
+Hahn
dont you see that it is always her staring with hope and longing.. the way he looks at her is to simply acknowledge her. in every video she stares at him the same way, and he doesnt seem to reciprocate it. personally, i find it distracting....
sounds lame, but its proof that love can be made with music.

EmilyN/A i didnt know you knew elliott smith and how he thinks.
Gorgeous rendition. Quality mimicry with an added element of respect.
I've fallen in love with this duo... I thought no one could do Elliott justice but these guys come very VERY close.
His voice is so soothing, love this!
The beauty here is the continuation of a perfectly wrote song by Elliot. Not if they captured exactly what Elliot Smith did. This is the definition of a cover. Keeping it alive.
When i first found out they are both happily married with kids to other people, i was amazed. Their chemistry is so real and wonderful.

Elliott Smith was an amazing artist and they seemed to make this song their own. I think Elliott is smiling down on this version.
i adore the way she looks at him in the beginning.

Beautiful Voices
These lyrics are really beautiful
One of my favorites.
I've been waiting for this.

best explanation of their talent ever.

Drink up baby
Stay up all night
The things you could do
You won't but you might
The potential you'll be
That you'll never see
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now
And forget all about the pressure of days
Do what I say and I'll make you okay
And drive them away
The images stuck in your head
People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
They push, shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Drink up baby
Look at the stars
I'll kiss you again between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there
With your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time
And I'll make you mine
Keep you apart, deep in my heart
Separate from the rest
Where I like you the best
And keeping the things you forgot
People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Thank you 🤩🙏🏼
Didnt know sirius black could sing
HAHA, right?!
Haha. Good one bro.
Of course he can! Might I remind you that this "Sirius Black" you speak of is actually renowned singer Stubby Boardman who was wrongfully incriminated for crimes he did not commit.
I didn't know Sirius Black was Johnny Depp.

1:58, look where his eyes shift to, and listen to the verse. Wow. It's shocking these two never got married.
