20 Years of Tony Hawk's Underground (THUG Retrospective)

- Today, we'll be discussing the skateboarding video game classic "Tony Hawk's Underground".
Released in 2003 for the playstation 2 (ps2), gamecube (gc), xbox, and PC - "Tony Hawk's Underground" (THUG) stands as a pivotal installment in the iconic Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. Developed by Neversoft and published by Activision, this skateboarding game not only refined the franchise's signature gameplay mechanics but also introduced a narrative-driven approach that revolutionized the genre. Tony Hawk's Underground continued the series' tradition of providing an unparalleled skateboarding experience. The game maintained its focus on intuitive controls, realistic tricks, and an expansive open-world environment that allowed players to explore various skate-friendly locales. With an improved game engine, THUG elevated the technical aspects of the gameplay, offering a more immersive and responsive experience for players. One of the most significant departures from its predecessors was the incorporation of a compelling narrative. Unlike previous Tony Hawk games that primarily emphasized high scores and completing objectives, THUG introduced a story mode that followed the journey of a custom-created skater. Players started as a local skater with dreams of becoming a professional, navigating a storyline full of challenges, rivalries, and unexpected twists. THUG allowed players to create and customize their own skater, a feature that added a personal touch to the gaming experience. From physical appearance to skating style, players had the freedom to shape their character's identity, reinforcing a sense of connection to the in-game world. The game's levels were expansive and interconnected, reflecting a more open-world design. From the streets of New Jersey to the bustling metropolis of Manhattan, each location featured diverse challenges, hidden areas, and unique opportunities for skaters to showcase their skills. This departure from the confined level structure of previous titles enhanced the sense of freedom and exploration. THUG capitalized on the growing popularity of online gaming, introducing online multiplayer modes. Players could compete against each other in various skateboarding challenges, adding a competitive edge to the game. The inclusion of online features marked a progressive step for the series, setting the stage for future online developments in the gaming industry. Tony Hawk's Underground not only solidified the franchise's reputation for outstanding gameplay mechanics but also ushered in a new era with its narrative-driven approach. The game's innovation in character customization, level design, and online features set a benchmark for the skateboarding genre, influencing subsequent titles in the series and beyond. Tony Hawk's Underground remains a landmark title that successfully blended storytelling with the thrill of skateboarding, leaving an indelible mark on the gaming landscape.

*Corrections:* There was no voice chat in THUG online (just text chat), and you didn't use the eyetoy to scan your face until THUG2 (the OG thug made you send a picture of your face to a neversoft email account). Remember, UA-camrs aren't smart - we're just regular people who have access to microphones and editing software. Have a good day 👍

The Need for Speed Underground 20th anniversary retrospective will be uploaded in the last week of November, bringing "Underground Month" to a close. But look forward to Underground Month Part II in 2024, with retrospectives on THUG2 and NSFU2 😎
I do NOT like knowing Underground is now 20 years old, nothing makes me feel older than seeing games I grew up up hitting that big 20 milestone.
Anyway, Eric Sparrow remains one of the most realistic antagonists imho, he's not out for world domination or wanting pure chaos, he's just a young man who got corrupted by fame and money, and ultimately let that ruin his lifelong friendships and forget his roots.
This game introduced me to the classic "The World is Yours", by NAS.
Yep, this game exposed my sheltered suburban younger self to some amazing music outside of what I listened to at the time.
@@MediaPastimesthat's how it was for me and my lil brother with THUG2 it exposed us to so much amazing music
Tony Hawk's Underground and NFS Underground were prolly the best games I ever played at the time they came out on ps2. NFS Underground still holds up to this day.
I'm a hardcore tony hawk player and this one is my favourite in the series. It's absolutely perfect. Especially as I was telling all my friends about my idea for a " grand theft tony hawk's" style game. This was basically what I was describing aside from an open world with safehouses.
cant tell you how many times i've beaten thug1 on my ps2, i remember doing a fresh save and beating the campaign and 100% it on every difficulty in one day 😪😪
The best in the tony hawk series. The customization in this game was ahead of its time.
This was by far the best game in the entire franchise. I really wish they remastered it like they did with Tony Hawk 1 & 2.
This game is the best one, just did a replay and it holds up. Amazing game. This game changed my life
Always assumed the NJ level was either Newark or Jersey City but that Franklin Township connection is crazy
This is still my favorite of the entire THPS series.. the campaign felt so much more personal, since it was us for a refreshing change.. eric sparrow a dastardly devil!
When it came time to beat him for the footage I was standing up the entire time hahaha
This is my all time fav game!
i was just playing this last night. i have the gamecube version these days but back then i had this my cousins o.g. xbox. with the xboxs music player my cousin burned eminems album "the eminem show" on it. lol tearing up nyc while listening to lose yourself, till i collapse, cleaning out my closet was a thing. i used to love watching all the videos too. crazy to think that all those kids in those videos are in their 30s now. we've had a good youth playing these games. we should pass this down to the younger generation of our families. its their time now. thug has them covered.
I go back and play this game once every 5 years or so. It’s definitely a classic MUST PLAY
Hell yes. Loved these games back in the day.
psyched for the future videos.
I have my instruction manual signed by Tony Hawk on his picture in the skaters list, this game was literally my entire childhood.
It's one of my favorite games of all time (top 5). The fun factor had me comeback to beat this game multiple times. While it wasn't the most well written stories, it worked for this game. I miss this era of gaming.
literally started replaying this on my chunky ps2 I’ve had since it came out - time FLIES when you’re havin fun huh :’) always stoked for your uploads man, keep it comin’!
I love this game, the soundtrack is so incredible.
I agree
You forgot to mention all the hidden skaters that you can only get if you complete every single gap in the game
Kid no one gaf if you care so much why dont you add the hidden skaters and put it on your yt and see how many people care..
I forgot to mention the answer is "no one"

@@ramrodbldm9876bro you're so f'n cool. You must be fun at your one parties. He obviously cared so why not do something for the rest of us and get therapy or something before going online again.
Comment threads like this are the reason that I do what I do. Truly beautiful.
Tony hawks underground was the first tony hawk game I played as a kid. Nostalgic. Best game of all time. Story, levels, just awesome. I’ve also got a secret project I’m doing right now.
You should talk about gt3. Another classic. Simpsons hot and run as well.
Wonderful video. The 2 underground games from 2003 were pure gold, the best NfS and the best Tony Hawk
we say iconic a lot but this here? certified
Great video! THUG was my favorite of the tony hawk games, the story mode was so EPIC
Tony hawk underground is one of the best games i've ever played!!!!
that metal gear 3 line went hard af
I almost threw in the GIF of the cat headbobbing with a nice beatbox backing track but I felt like that'd be overkill 😅
Great video. I'm hyped for the T.H.U.G. 2 video as it's one of my all time favorite games. I spent countless hours exploring every inch of it. It's one of a handful of games that I completed 100% just because it was so fun. I remember feeling like there were endless things to do and find. What a game. T.H.U.G. 1 was great too but damn, the sequel just did it all so much better imo.
I never would've thought my town would be mentioned in a THUG video
Good shit, can't wait for the THUG 2 retrospective.
You educated me with the voice actors! Wow! Great video!
I haven’t even started the video yet but I know we should give this guy views!!
Another good video, man. 👍
that’s dope 🔥🔥✊🏾
Underground to this day remains the goat of all th games and deserves a remaster
Vicarious Visions was going to remaster THPS 3 and 4, and keep going with the series if people kept buying them - but their parent company (Activision) folded them into Blizzard. Now that microsoft owns everything its possible that they'll go back to working on THPS.
kudos for finding those landmarks in Franklin Township. That was awesome
Just a hilarious coincidence, couldn't resist throwing it into the vid.
Erics voice actor also did Joseph Joestar from part 2
Thug 1 best skate bording game of all time
100%✔️
Nice video bro
I always thought being able to scan your face into the game using the eye toy was so cool at the time
I love this game but I'm so here for THUG 2 I love the intro video so much on that game
Keeping my eur out for Thu2!!
Fingers crossed for a remaster / remake!
Omg dont tease me lol
Great video- it would have been hilarious to put a pic of numba 1 from KND with the audio of Eric cussing you out at the end of the final challenge 🤣 I love this game so much, the story taught us about backstabbers and the soundtrack is insanely good, I still listen to the soundtrack on a frequent basis!
THUG is the pinnacle of skating games. I like when sports games actually have a story, they should try that more often. T.H.U.D's name was definitely inspired by C.H.U.D, but the design looks more like creature from the black lagoon to me? Though I haven't seen the chud movie
Best videos
I would spend hours watching the skate videos in the extras theirs a krux add I would watch over and over with colt cannon pre UA-cam that was the first real skateboarding I saw before I got a skate video for my birthday one year miss these days
Perhaps a here comes the pain 20 year retrospective if you already haven’t 😊
THUG, San Andreas and Underground 2 were the peak of their genres and videogame generation. After them, you game had to have an open-world, dark tone or sports like racing or skating, or it wasn't good enough.
ARMAGEDDON
LET THE LIGHT IN
The soundtrack is legendary
Appreciate this video , going to get a 360 soon didn’t know I could backwards compatibility thug ☮️
2x, 3 , 4, THUG 1 and 2, and American wasteland are all playable on 360. It’s great 🤙
@@MediaPastimes Thank You My Guy
@@MediaPastimesso you can't play them on the one?
@@wastedtalent666 Nope. Microsoft must have worked out a one-time deal for the games playable on 360, because there's so much licensed music that they have to consider before making a game playable on newer consoles.
Heck yeah real gamer right here
Bro, I love KISS!!!
Ace's solo album > their entire catalog.
6:46 I KNEW IT
ERIC SPARROW IS NUMBA 1? Wild 😅
always appreciate the videos; i have the same taste in all the shit you put out
I really want a dow hill jam remaster
NFS 👐Tony Hawk
Both have 2 of their best games named Underground
You couldn't use the eye toy to scan your face until thug 2, you had to connect to the internet in order to use your face in thug 1
Mandela effect'd myself TWICE during this video. Thanks for the correction!
soon all levels will be playable in the new engine 😄
Nothing beats Thug 2 controls. Thug 1 is the better game though
voice chat on thug 1? there was text but im pretty sure there was no voice chat
It's possible that I mandela effect'd myself (AKA: foggy memories), because now that you mention it I could've just been heckled via text chat 🤔
ya theres never been voice chat in any thps (maybe thaw and p8 on 360???)
The girl who played Mindy in thaw also played number 5 in kids next door lmao
pretty sure thug didn't have voice chat online
I corrected that statement in the pinned comment, king 👑
Eric doesn’t steal the heli footage, he steals the Waikiki street hotel gap. You skate him for the heli footage at the end of the game.
I'm aware, I just worded my sentence in a weird way. Obviously Eric didn't call in a helicopter to gap over it LOL
Oh I'm not ragging on you lol more the community in general, it's a common misconception :p@@MediaPastimes
0:28 Seriously though. Tried playing old Tony Hawk and maneuvering by skating alone is terrible
Eric Sparrow is still a pro at the end of the day, so I don't know why he's bitching about losing the tape!! 🤷
Underground is good, but 2 was very mid. American Wasteland to this day is my favorite one.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on Dreamcast had vevert ; )
The hell is a vevert?
@@MediaPastimes Is when I have to swap out my shorts for a new pair because I had used the restroom in them.
Oh okay that makes sense.
In all seriousness though, the Dreamcast version didn’t have revert 😬 you had me googling it to make sure I wasn’t spreading false info and everyone states THPS3 introduced reverts. You could be thinking of 2x but I don’t think that one even had reverts either.
@MediaPastimes Has me super confused too, was watching game play footage of the early Tony Hawk games to enjoy some memories, seen a couple of the second game on the Dreamcast and no one is doing reverts, and i know that they would definitely be doing them if they could.
It is weird because I just got a Dreamcast for free and have been playing the first two Tony Hawk games on it, i was playing it just the other day, and there is for sure reverts in the copy I'm playing. I wonder if it is a Mod or an add in, because it is a disk I burned with a Rom I got online, so it is a pirated copy. Everything else seems as it should be though, I guess whoever uploaded that Rip of the game had put that in, I'm kind of confused about this now too, I'll need to fire it up and double check or it's gonna bother me.
DEEZ NUTS!!
Games then: We need tons of festure to keep gamers invested
Games now: We need tons of micro transactions to nickle and dime every player
Greed is to blame 😢sadly they ruined the fun for millions of gamers.
