He's a grumpy bastard, but he's a kind hearted grumpy bastard... love the guy. Also he engaged with Julien. Even through the translator... thoughful profound questions, and thoughtful answers... great meeting.
That was really a great interview! Thank you so much for asking really nice questions to him and sharing this with us. He also seems happy to be making that interview :)
Wow, that was a wonderful encounter you had there. What a warm and beautiful atmosphere, he seemed to be so open to you. How did you manage to meet him?
It's a long story, it's a succession of meetings and events but also quite simply a bit of luck. Besides, I did Japanese in high school and then I studied animation cinema. In addition, I can have another look at his cinematic universe because of my disability.
@@julienmariestudio88 Thank you so much for the answer. I am happy for you that you had the chance. I am a filmmaker myself so I can somehow feel how special it must have been for you. Thank you for sharing.
This interview is really casual and short yet I feel like I got a glimpse of Miyazaki Hayao's mind as an animator. I always love seeing him and Studio Ghibli. Such a humility and simplicity amidst the world that keeps wanting to show greatness in a spectacular way.
if you want to know how hayao thinks about animation you should read the books starting and turning point in the ghibli library. he goes in depth what he hates, loves and could be done better in the animation scene
For a sec i thought the unfinnished story he was showing bits of was Boro but that didnt add up time wise and then it becomes clear that its PONYO! Lovely!
Well, he's spent decades of long hours creating art and film fir kids, his own son never saw him because he was always working. That's the dedication he has to make film for the kids of the world
Hey Julien, thanks for doing this. Your questions and answers were all great, much better than most people can pull off. Especially your question at 10:56 made me a little emotional because Im a big fan myself. Thank you again.
@@felipeff1 they have a strained personal relationship, partly because Miyazaki is a workaholic and a very stern difficult to please father. After he watched his son's debut film as a director, he did not hold back at all and eviscerated it right to his son's face on camera. Miyazaki wasn't entirely wrong here, as that film had a pretty poor reception, but still..
@@outkast978 not really... at least if you're refering to the scenes that happen in the 10 Years With Hayao Miyazaki documentary. He doesn't "eviscerate" his son in front of the camera. He watches the movie, gets overwhelmed for whatever reason, goes out for a smoke and goes back. Says he can't see his son as a director, just as his kid. Doesn't really speak to Goro about it (that we know of). They do have a strained relationship, but so do a lot of people... seems more like their business and not something to judge Miyazaki's entire integrity and career over like a lot of people on the internet have been doing for the last few years for some reason. As the original comment says, every person is complex and so are their relationships.
Merci !

Hard to believe how he shows so many sides of him through interviews and his own films.
I feel sorry for his son, I guess every person is complex.
There is some problem with his son?

Eng subtitles?
I love Ponyo

why couldn't miyazaki learn english, such a genius I wish we could hear him directly without the translators
who needs english
l'english ?
Why don't you study French or Japanese?
