Being a shoe repairer for the last 35 years I have seen a lot of Doc's I can tell you the most common problem out of all Doc's is the plastic finish of the corrected grain leather cracking across the flexpoint at the ball of the foot. In my opinion any kind of feeding the leather doesn't work because it cant penetrate through the plastic type finish, avoid that leather and always go for a leather where you can see the grain and isn't stiff from the outset.

@@46thandBliss No, there are some very good vegan leathers out there, however for vegan don't choose the old vinyl style, that is plastic covered fabric, plastic is not eco friendly and it usually cracks and peels in a short period of time. plant based ones that i have worked with and seem to be stong are mushroom and cactus

@@supercobbler4712 Thanks. I was asking about Docs as well as other good leather brands that stand the test of time. Like 1 pair or 2 pairs of boots that are good to have for a shoe minimalist. I like to rotate my daily wear often because letting your shoes dry and air out is important for its overall life span. I know Docs aren't the bequest, in terms of value and build but I still have like 4 pairs and have had more in the past but I hoping to hear about something new, like to Solovairs were new to me but now that I think of it, I may have owned an Oxblood pair like 15 years ago that I got thrifted but I let a friend borrow them.....then that was goodbye. Thanks for your comment!

no they are leather, they just wont eat eggs.
technically all dr martens are vegan as they wont eat eggs, but the vegan ones are actually tested in the lab, where they try to feed the boots eggs, and then they can certify they are vegan.
they will also waste away over time, this way you can tell they are vegan.

I’ve purchased my first pair of Dr Martens in 1995, I still own them and wear them. The 1460 is the original Dr. Martens Boot. Made with instantly recognizable features: 8 eyes, classic Dr. Martens . There was a breaking in period, I’ve always taken very good care in conditioning them and I kept them clean. Had no problems with them deteriorating.
I’m on the hunt for a new pair different style.

1995 ones were made by Solovair, they also had a proper shank..modern Docs, including the English made ones are essentially leather fashion trainers, they have no shank and the midsole isn't leather, its foam. If you want a pair of boots like your 1995 ones then you need to buy a pair of Solovair Classics which are made like Docs were pre 1995.

They are hardly slip resistant ,their compound for the sole is cheap and will wear quickly , the foam in the sole breaks down cell by cell (even if they look new ) they’re done . Not to mention the heel counter has been known to eat ankles when new . So sure if you want to impress the folks at the office around the water cooler then they’re okay

Dr Marten owns the namesake but makes their boots in Vietnam. When they make the UK stuff I find them hit or miss and inconsistent . I don’t know if they update their lasts or move factories but they don’t feel consistent . I’m in the shoe business and deal with tooling fit tests and prototypes and o can tell you Dr marten sole compound isn’t very durable . Hope this helped

I recommended to a friend to consider getting a pair too as she wanted nicer-looking combat boots. She got in August 2019 a Rick Griffin collab model (because they were "nicer" than the classic) and I honestly don't know what manufacturing they got, but in October already, the boots had white lines of worn off paint where the foot flexes at the toes. She tried contacting customer support about it, but no response. Less than 10 wears and already look like shit.

I really have to correct you. I've deconstructed about 20 pairs of Dr. Martens Boots (Made in UK, China, Thailand & Macao) and i have to tell you that they were and are all Goodyear welted. The only part of the shoe where they use Glue, is where the insole is glued to the part where the yellow stitching is. (Don't know the english word for it) After that the sole is melted to this part. The Made in Uks had a wooden shank. The China and the Thailand Boot did not have a shank. And i really have to say the horween ones are fantastic.

    • @RoseAnvil
      @RoseAnvil  4 роки тому +44

Awesome thank for the info. I just checked the Uk site and their listings matched what you said about them being goodyear welted. I just added a correction comment to the top. The two pairs i have that were made in england don't have a shank (or at least a shank that has any support) I can easily bend the boot at the heel, where you would expect the shank to add some strength. I wonder if they have changed them since you had a pair from England.

I love the different perspective here (an expert in leather reviewing leather, you could run with this idea on other boot lines fyi!) its not just a kid in his basement saying "its good/its bad". Im honestly surprised the leather quality varies that much between Docs.
Apart from leather quality though, its worth noting the soles are really different too. Not just the goodyear welt aspect but the quality of rubber. My sister had a pair of the cheaper 1460s where the soles totally split in half horizontally along the whole sole in less than a year of sporadic wear. Ive looked into it and the sole splitting issue is common amongst the China made ones. That is dreadful and a much worse problem than surface appearance of leather IMO.

Until a few years ago their UK shop offered four versions of the 1460, “For Life”, which came with a lifetime guarantee to repair or replace, “Vintage”, “Vegan” and “Smooth”. Now only the latter three are available here, so we get less choice. I did buy a pair of Smooth boots a while back but only paid £28 for them. To be frank I didn’t think they were worth more. I have two pairs of Doc Martins..I've wanted a pair for a long time. The first pair I bought was the Pascal Leather..you didn't talk about them but they are soft from the start, no breaking them in, they have a texture to the leather, not all shiny smooth, I got them in Cherry Red, but they are more of a beautiful wine color. There's no separate piece sewed around the top ankle area just a raw cut/finish top. The shoe laces match perfectly. So, those boots are better than I ever imagined that they would be. A couple months later I thought I"d get the black patent leather ones. I ordered these and they are beautiful looking although they has a narrow piece of leather sewed along the top cut edge where the laces start. They have black laces but yellow/gold stitching on the sole. They say that they are leather with a treatment on the surface but no way! These boots look great but are so stiff and uncomfortable I don't know if I could ever wear them! They feel like thick plastic. On the tongue it says Made in LAO POR ??? I don't know if they are knockoffs or not? They have the black and gold tab at the top..It says "AirWair with soles bouncing"

Similar experience. I think those pascals r made with the same leather as hardlife usually. My first pair of docs were hardlife For Life boots. Absolutely loved them, no breaking them in, wore them everywhere, light hiking, to the beach, lots of miles on them in the concrete jungle. The tread wore down flat and smooth and they became a hazard so while i waited for my warranty replacement i ordered 1460s in patent leather TOO. Horrible. Was never able to break them in, the stupid tongue is sown onto the shoe with thick overlap and not enough wiggle room. It hurt my higher instep. The leather is not forgiving at all, super inflexible and prone to cracking, scratches and flaking off. My for life were a dream and i wasn’t that meticulous but it didnt feel like a chore to occasionally clean & condition. The leather patinead also. I kinda want to revamp the patent ones and sell them for a bargain, but the materials are an investment, i dont like throwing things out 😢

Nice review. If you want quality the Made In England (MIE) boots are the way to go. A few years ago I was looking at getting a pair of 1460s and wondered what the MIE had over the Far Eastern made boots. In London there's a famous boot/shoe shop called The British Boot Company, just outside Chalk Farm station on the Northern Line (Edgeware Branch). The guy showed me the differences and I was amazed. The UK leather (Quillion) - the same as the UK smooth version you reviewed, was a good twice as thick over the Far Eastern and the quality of the stitching and attention to detail and finish were excellent, compared to just OK with the non MIE boot. OK the MIE was more than twice the price at just about £200 but I guess the old adage of you get what you pay for comes to mind here. Sure the non-MIE will look OK as a fashion statement but quality is quality. I'm a big fan of the US brand Timberland, particularly their top end deck shoes - they just ooze quality throughout. Mine are made in the Dominican Republic and the quality control is first rate.

So, here's the deal. I bought a pair of 20 hole docs back in 1997. I wore the absolute hell out of those boots. I'm an equestrian, and have a lot of experience with a lot of leather boots meant to take some wear and tear. Im talking Roper, Ariat, Mountain Horse, etc. I have some serious horse boot experience, and nothing, I mean NOTHING, stood up to the hardiness of my old docs. For over a decade I wore those boots every day at the barn for everything from cleaning stalls to riding. Not only did the soles and insoles hold up, but the leather took the abuse with gusto. Yes, I cleaned and oiled them after every day at the barn, then I would buff them up with parade gloss and wear my barn boots to punk rock shows all weekend. Even hung chains around the ankles for music festivals, and afterward, was able to buff them up to perfection every time. Those boots took every bit of mud, horse manure, mosh pit, and thousands of hours on my feet, with just some responsible care. Now, 26 years later, those wonderful boots have just started to wear a small hole in the leather, right in the foot crease behind the toe, and the sole right at the ball of the foot has started to wear thin. I wanted to just repair my old 20 hole standby boots, so I sent an email to the company to see if they could replace the toe portion of leather on the boots, and replace the sole. I was asking to pay them to fix my ancient boots that I bought when I was 17 years old. I got some stupid stock email saying "Sorry you are unhappy with your boots. They are out of warranty." My entire email was about how much I loved my boots, and just wanted to pay the company to save them! What the hell?
So I decided to just keep my old boots for special occasions, and buy a new pair for every day wear. Unfortunately, they don't make 20 hole docs anymore. So I bought a pair of 10 holes to wear for going out on the weekends when I'm not working. I have had those boots for six months, and I only wear them on the weekends. The leather is absolutely not the same quality as the boots I bought over 25 years ago. It won't take the cleaning, oiling, or breaking in process at all. The stitching is the same pattern as my old boots, but not nearly the same quality. Bigger stitches that are already coming loose. I wore them for a very rare weekend outing to a theme park, and half an hour into the high walking requirements, the insole on the left boot came loose. I ended up walking for miles that day with a folded up insole under my foot.
What the hell happend to this company?
Now I'm trying to find a proper cobbler to repair my old boots for special occasions, and searching for a new brand for my weekend wear boots. So disappointing.

Bought a pair of the six-eyelet Docs, with padded ankle, in 1988. I think they're the Saxon 939 model. These boots could be an advertisement for Doc Marten. They were hellishly expensive back then (about $200 in NZ). You could get Docs made under licence in NZ, but they were crap and fell apart. The English-made ones were regarded as bullet-proof. I looked after these boots like they were my child. After about 10 years, I had to get the ankle padding replaced. They could also do with a re-sole. But, the leather and comfort is extraordinary. They're like slippers to wear. I'll always be pleased at making that $200 investment, 32 years ago. I think the main problem with many great old manufacturing names, is that they've been bought out by soulless companies, which couldn't care less about heritage, quality and integrity. They just want to flog substandard products to the gullible.

I still have a pair of Docs that I bought in 2002. I still wear them once or twice per week, used to wear them more. They're still holding up pretty damn well. They've seen a lot of miles riding motorcycles and a lot of time on job sites. They're not perfect but they're damn good. A lot of the cheaper ones these days are not made nearly as well, you gotta go with made in England ones.

Well as far back as I can remember Doc's in England, Ireland & the British isles have allways been smooth silky leather - its the way we like em' on this side of the pond - we actually don't want the grainy leather.
Another harsh reality is that I've worn the basic shiny " made in China " ones for 5 years now and they're still going beautifully.
Still, next pair I buy will be English made. Nothing against China but I'm getting rather cheesed off seeing "Made in China" on every blooming thing I buy.

I bought my first pair of Doc's in 1974 at the age of 13yrs, a pair of 10 eye oxbloods which I cherished immensely. I had to get a part time job and save for them as my dad wouldn't buy me a pair of ''Bovver'' boots as he called them, a term made popular by skinheads at the time, they cost me 20 quid which was a lot of money for a school kid to fork out. I've had quite a few pairs of Doc's over the years with varying degrees of satisfaction, all of them were made at the Northamptonshire factory before everything was outsourced to asia. The last pair I bought was back in 2000 and have worn them on and off until about 4 years ago when the soles got really thin and for some reason I didn't have the heart to bin them. Where I live now there is a cobbler about 10 miles away from me and I have had formal shoes resoled there and was very impressed with the quality of work and the friendly nature the owners show to their customers. So impressed was I that I set them a challenge, could they convert them from an airwear sole, to a leather sole and heel? They were intrigued and up for the challenge. Well that was a week go and I am expecting a call from them within the next week to inform me that the job is complete. The deal was that as it was the first time they had attempted this, it would cost me 85 pounds sterling, if it wasn''t possible, it would cost me nothing but an old pair of boots being ruined, but they were past their best so no real loss. I will update this post one way or the other when I get them back.

    • @sexkev1001
      @sexkev1001 4 роки тому

OK, I have picked my converted Docs up from the cobblers and I am very impressed! It cost me £100 sterling for the conversion to a leather sole and heel. The boots are very stiff and now support the arch of my foot with the addition of a good shank. Another bonus is that they can be easily repaired in the future. I am now on the lookout for a secondhand pair of boots as the guys who did this job for me are willing to put a wedge sole on like in this video, I think they will be good for riding on my Triumph Tiger.
This is a link to the cobblers who took on the challenge showing the finished repair, they also have repairs sent to them from all over the world. ua-cam.com/video/OtnFmbIStS4/v-deo.html.

I really love the 1460s over similar boots because of the yellow contrast and have owned several pairs - my first pair was used and easily the best, super thick leather, sturdy sole with way less flex, I ended up reselling them because I wanted a different color. All my other pairs I've bought new, and the point of failure is always the sole. My previous ones split around the ball of the foot after 5 years, my current pair cracked in the heel area after 2, where the shank would be in a different boot. I'll probably buy a pair of Solovairs next even though I prefer the appearance of the docs because the quality keeps decreasing with each pair.

    Dear Sir,
Really enjoyed the honest, professional leather-worker review of these icons. And even while maybe some cultural backgrounds and contest may tip the scale in many people towards “cheap-working-class-hero-look-subculture-etc” opinion, I would agree with you on almost all accounts. Maybe add, after a bunch of months wearing a pair of Vintage’s: these survive London, airports, running around a couple of busy conferences, dirt and the occasional side rub agains a car pedal really nicely. The feel is great, they settle in very naturally, do not lose their shape and with absolutely normal, regular care feel and look as exciting as ever. There is definitely a thing about the Made In England sub-brand (beyond the obviously attractive marketing ring to the iconic name). The fact that the natural edges of the undyed leather are visible only adds character and makes them look more stylish in my opinion.I hope you could add your observations after breaking in all pairs and wearing them for a couple of months.
I wish you all the strength and inspiration to keep doing these great and very informative videos, which I really enjoy. Thank you, you made me a fan of yours!

Hello! I've had the 1460 Smooth for about a year now and I'm very happy with them. I have to say that when choosing docs, I only thought of how practical they would be. I wanted a boot that would work great during the snowy and rainy seasons, but also have a structure to it. I'm naming structure, because a friend of mine has a pair of docs as well, but hers are not as hard as mine and they don't really stand tall, but instead kind of ''bow down''. I find it quit helpful that they stand tall, it makes it easier when putting them on. I paid ca 160€ for them and I certainly do not regret doing so :)

What I love about docs, besides the esthetics, are the ones you call “plasticky” I buy for that exact reason. Horrible to break in. Not comfortable at all, and I still have huge scars on each ankle after all my pairs, but they are great in snow, rain and dirt for that exact purpose. The smooth finish makes them easy to care for and clean. Only comfy pair was the one made out of softer leather, and had sheep fleece/wool on the inside. Just like slippers. I have a love and bate relationship with docs lol.
