I liked a lot of what you said but the girl's flashbacks are not "pointless". In fact they play a pretty big part in why she is calmer than the other two girls throughout the ordeal and the end.
*SPOILERS* .Exactly. And it also gives depth to what the beast is talking about. That scene in the end when her life gets spared, it adds a lot of meaning to it.
Not only that but the hunting scenes were needed to show that she knew her way around a gun. Otherwise it would make no sense that she could pick it and know how to properly use it. The flashbacks in my opinion also help you feel more empathetic for her which adds to the overall atmosphere.
I completely disagree about the twist in fact I think it is one of the best twists he's had since the sixth sense. SPOILER: I loved unbreakable and for this to be an origin story for a supervillan to go up agains David Dunn I think is a really creative and cool idea. I'd like to see Split go up against David in the future and further both of their characters.
Whats your opinion on the whole 'using mental illness as a catalyst/motivation for murder' thing that seems to be happening? Split obviously has DID, and many films play on these ideas with a schizophrenic/bipolar killer or something. It goes against what psychologists report, which is that a person with a mental illness is far more likely to be the victim of violence, and that mental illness itself does not trigger violence or create violent thoughts. It doesn't help that these films tend to get the facts wrong, for example Split claims Kevin's 23 personalities are an 'unusual' amount, when the current average is 16 with some having up to 4,500, meaning Kevin is well, pretty standard for someone with DID. It seems like it doesn't help people with mental illnesses to constantly present people like them as horrible people.
Z BWorth ^^ Exactly. This kind of film is especially discouraging because this is how popular media ALWAYS portrays DID. It's routinely used as a plot twist for a murder mystery. DID is typically the result of horrific abuse suffered at a very young age. It's so frustrating to see such a serious and rare condition being exploited for the sake of a plot twist, yet again.
Z BWorth If you're letting a fictional film alter your views about mental people you're an idiot. It's like saying Buffalo Bill from Silence of the lambs made everyone with more then two brain cells assume all trans females were serial killers
Buffalo Bill didn't exactly help the acceptance of trans people, no, and Jaws prompted such a change in the attitude of sharks that their numbers are still recovering. Those are just individual films. Can you imagine the perceptions people would have about a group that is CONSTANTLY and PERSISTENTLY portrayed and violent and/or unstable? Media affects people. What we see affects us. If you can't understand that I see no point in continuing this conversation.
I have much respect for McAvoy and Shamalan. And I despise them for making this film. People with DID don’t have secret sociopathic killers inside. They’re far more likely to be victims of violence and abuse than to inflict it. Perpetuating the stereotype of people with DID as having a violent side is revolting, exploitive, and irresponsible. No matter how well it’s done. These two should have known better. Will we ever see a film featuring a character with DID who’s protagonist and victim and hero?
well DID is actually very, very, very rare. I can't remember the actual stat. In abnormal psychology we skim through it because there is not enough research on the subject. I'm not saying it doesn't exist but it's so rare that it's hard to tell. I mean sometimes a person will develop DID when a traumatic event happens, sometimes they don't. For example, in our textbook for abnormal we read a story of a girl who was sexual abused by her father, her whole life. When she was rescued she had another personilty. That personilty was strong and very dominating. It was a defense mechanism her brain created to help protect her. If someone does have DID, they typically have 1 alter personality. If treated correctly after the trauma, the person might not longer need that personality and it goes away. At least that is what happened to the girl in the textbook.
The movie as a whole was ok. But most of what made it that way was James Macavoy. As an actor myself (although I do small plays and not movies) I couldn't help but be amazed at how he tackled SO many different characters! Some people can't play their only character right in movies and I think Macavoy was outstanding in having to play like 6 people at different times
I also disagree. This movie made Mcavoy my favorite living actor. While you do mention how amazing HE is I feel the entire movie is a masterpiece and bought it and have watched so many time I lost count
I really enjoy your videos and this is just my personal opinion on movies, but I really enjoy when a movie grows dark in a uncomfortably realistic way. For Casey's past it makes me really feel for the character. When it is told through their memories the true, realistic and gritty struggles people go through in my opinions it grows their character. I do agree that they spent a lot more time on the character of Casey and Kevin's personalities rather than the plot which I thought could be improved.
Honestly, without the ending that it had, I think the movie would have been too unbelievable. But because of universe it was shown to exist in, I was willing to except any scientific stretches that were portrayed throughout the film.
Kiaira Gary The ending is: Natalie Portman killed herself but finally perfected the ballet. She embodied both the white swan (her naturally) and the black swan (represented by Mila Kunis) completely. In doing this though, her mind couldn't handle trying to control both the white and black swan completely. Her mental state and physical state could only be one, not both. She starts to hallucinate when she dives into the black swan persona. Imagining Mila in places where she's not really. Because she doesn't understand the black swan completely, she can't control what's real and what's not. The only thing she goes off of is that Mila is the black swan that she needs to be so she does everything Mila would do to the point where she accidentally stabs herself.
I still have no idea why they chose Shya to make an Avatar: TLAB film. It really never seemed like his area. I expected more of a Harry Potter treatment with each movie covering the different books and some grand CGI (even if I was hoping for practical effects for bending and the creatures) Seems like that'd appeal to the masses
The twist at the end does make sense if you watch the movie again and try to see into it you see that mr glass was probably responsable for kevins fathers death which gave kevin his disorder
SPOILERS: Personally, I thought this movie deserves a bit more credit. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and thought it didn't have tension in danger in some of the moments when certain personalities were present, I feel like the tension was met more with the unpredictability of the character. One scene stands out in particular for me. When she says his name and all the personalities are rushing in it is incredibly tense. There's a lot of tension that built up the moments preceding the scene as the girls are getting close to escaping. And the scene releases the tension with a false sense of safety, followed by confronting the beast again. Granted, I have my issues with this movie. The name thing is a bit of a plot device, the previews made it seem to be a completely different type of movie, and the flashbacks were real heavy handed. BUT, if you view the movie as a psychological thriller rather than a slasher, monster, or supernatural horror (or whatever kind of genre you want to call it), I think you'll find it is far more enjoyable.
I agree the flashbacks were dumb. It was just awkward and uncomfortable to keep having prolonged child molestation flung in our faces and for casey to have been molested meaning she's safe from being killed and eaten because she's "suffered enough already" is...just...what?!?!? So if james' character were to be let loose on the whole world there'd be no one left the but mentally and emotionally damaged? Tf? What kind of world is that even??? And how do you determine what kind of experience(s) qualify as "enough suffering"??? Nah... Wasn't feeling that so called twist the flashbacks tied into.
I haven't watched it yet but I love anything to do with Psychology. And part of the reason why I want to see it so badly is because of James McAvoy. But I can't because of parents so I just resorted to watching the review to see how you thought of it as your reviews do make a lot of sense.
I didnt really see any real lack of suspense building to me it was more like allowing a pot of water to boil without watching it. You know it's supposed to boil and youre watching to wait to see it happen but it doenst boil right away, as you watch nothing seems to happen. Step away from the pot to let it do its thing and boom its boiling like that. Try to let movies do their thing without being so impatient and it turns out better
I actually liked Split a lot. I rate movies on a scale of 1 to 10. I'd give it an 8. If Shyamalan keeps up that steady ascent following his fall from grace we might see another Sixth Sense type of film soon enough. I was thrilled from start to finish and the performances were all around superb. Kevin's unpredictability gives some more suspense to the predicament the ladies find themselves in, and I found the scenes with Kevin and Dr. Fletcher to be very well written and interesting because they allow us to learn something new about Kevin's character each time. However, I was disappointed in how the script treated Casey's two friends, they were rather disposable and that was a bummer given how the third act played out. I think the film should've made room to get to know the two girls a bit more for about 5 to 10 minutes at the beginning of the film, because literally less than 2 minutes into the film Kevin abducts the girls. I also thought the big payoff was a bit underwhelming, I was expecting more given old-school Shyamalan's ability to strike the audiences with something unexpected. A minor gripe I had was that scenes with Fletcher could go on slightly longer than needed which could alleviate a bit of the tension in the basement.
Dude, will you do some research before you make a video, ffs. If you would've done just a little research, just a quick Google search, you would've known that the last scene in the diner at the end of "Split" is not just tacked on because Shyamalan couldn't help himself. It was there because Kevin was a character that was originally apart of the script of "Unbreakable'", but was taken out so "Unbreakable" would seem overcrowded with characters. Kevin had a whole 15 pages in the original "Unbreakable" script just on the ins and outs of his character, so Shyamalan decided to just give him his own movie but still give us a scene at the end of "Split" with David Dunn in the diner talking about Mr. Glass to let the audience know that this is all taking place in the same universe and that in the next movie in this universe, we will most likely see David Dunn and Kevin go up against each other, super hero and super villain style. So do a little research before you make a video about something or else you'll just look and sound ignorant and uninformed, man.
i enjoyed it. I liked the transformation at the end, but i like those mind over matter style stories. I didnt like how they tacked on the fact that he lived under a zoo and thats where his inspiration for the beast came from. Felt unnecesary.
I think it's pretty solid, there are some threw problems I have with this movie mainly the 2 other girls that get killed ad the end of the movie Butt i enjoyed it. It's a trilling movie and James MCAvoy dit a wonderful job playing almost halved of the 23 individual characters in this movie. :)
Must say, I would rather take up reviewing a film in 2 hours than making a film. Must be a difficult task to make film for an year and put it out there.
Shimalingalingalong's name on this movie is the only reason why I'm not watching this movie. Even Professor X, as Legion (his son in the comics), can't make me watch this movie even though I enjoy his movies.
Why? Because somebody messed up a couple times, then comes back means he still can't be forgiven? If a guy finally starts making good stuff he should be supported for it.
Ehm I watched this movie 2 days ago and there are some parts I disagree with this review. To begin with, I didn't find the girl's flashbackz useless. Those flashbacks made me understand why she was 'pure' and why she was different than the other 2 girls. It made me very uncomfortable to watch though since her piece of shit uncle was sexually assaulting her. But that was the point I guess. I found 2 other girls useless indeed but I think we needed them to make a comparison between Casey's story and the their story which they hadn't. I didn't think Casey's story got in the way and made Dennis' story weaker. On contrary, I thought their story together made the storyline very strong. At some point, I thought Casey would join the beast' horde because she was too damaged and damagind still was continuing because of her uncle. I think, if we will have a third movie, Casey will join the dark side or will have her thoughts about crossing the line. I liked the ending even I hadn't watched Unbreakable. To understand Split more, I watched Unbreakable the day after and now things make more sense. So, I really don't thing the ending was flawed. It fits perfectly like a piece of puzzel in that universe. This movie isn't a horror movie, it is more a suspense thriller. There are no ghosts but throughout the whole movie you feel uncomfortable and that's what the premise is. At least for me. Unfortunately, this review mentioned nothing about Unbreakable while the ending was tied up with that movie. I would recommend others to watch other reviews cause this one is a very weak one.
Bar San I like your point of view. You might be right. But do you think she will remain innocent? They turned her back to her uncle. She kept those girls a little longer alive indeed but I am not sure if she can stay sane and keep her head together.
Bar San It hurt badly when her uncle came over and took her home at the end. But you are right. From now on, she will stand up and she won't be a victim anymore. I think she was too afraid to talk about the sexual abuse. I know people who had gone through similar things. It is very difficult to talk about. You are afraid that people can judge you. I think that's why I could relate to her. I am very curious about the next movie, it's storyline and hopefully we wouldn't have to wait 10 more years to watch it. I still think this movie was great. Can't wait to watch James Mcovay again.
SPOILER ALERT I loved this your interpretation of what you saw is different to what I saw........How can you say her back story was pointless, OK so we see her scars The Beast does his monologue about the fact that she is broken rejoice then lets her go. Without that scene no one would understand it. I think that scene were too uncomfortable for you to watch as was I but that I think is the whole point. I also thought the movie was brilliant I found no scene to be stupid or pointless. I am not saying these things as a dig at you just understood it differently.
I actually enjoyed this movie, of course it did have some flaws, the girls and Casey seemed to be both weak in story and in personality (I think that the man who was Kevin and all the personalities was perfect and we should have a full movie on just him.), and from time to time there wasn't really any suspense. But this movie coming from Shamalamadingdong is impressive since I hate most of his movies. It won't forgive him for The Last-.......The movie I shall not name that was awful and I desperately try to forget but we all know what I am talking about. But it's a start.
I thought it was a brilliant movie but I didn't like Casey's flashbacks and that Shyamalan went Hollywood and had two of the girls traipsing around in their underwear.
what if James has a newer level of D.I.D and can control different personalities and thats why he's such a good actor...... oh god no. PLEASE NO I'VE BEEN SHAMALAMADINGDONGED HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
M.Night gets a bad rep...and it seems everyone is just jumping on the bandwagon. Hollywood never wanted this man to succeed because he IS that good. His movies are highly subliminal and metaphysical and most people WON'T understand them. You have to know about his culture too to understand. I loved all of his movies including Avatar. Avatar had amazing effects and was pretty damn good for a director like him. All of these movies out here getting Oscars and such REALLY suck!!! I can't wait to see Split. I want people to ignore all of the reviews on his movies and see them and form their own opinions.
split was a sorry excuse of a film for just the introduction of a character and a huge timewaster, it could've been at least 1 hour shorter... wait for the dvd guys and read some of the reviews on imdb first I watched it based on the rating alone, proof that imdb is rigged. subed.
I used to call him Shame-a-lan for 7 years but I actually think this film marks redemption for him. However I can still feel the bad taste in my mouth for what he did to Avatar: The Last Airbender.
I liked a lot of what you said but the girl's flashbacks are not "pointless". In fact they play a pretty big part in why she is calmer than the other two girls throughout the ordeal and the end.
CNCycle I agree!!! There is a reason she's having flashbacks !!!
Totally disagree. Loved the movie and the twist at the end brought it all together
This channel is the best thing to happen to me since my first born
CiscoLitco oh. That's blu ray case quote worthy.
The second one should be going to school and learning English.
This is probably my favorite M. Night Shyamalan film. Loved the ENTIRE movie! Beginning to end it was phenomenal IMO.
Jurassic Park #1 Fan agreed!
Shyama lama ding dong is his full name by the way
natieangus when he pronounced it correctly, my brain automatically corrected it to shama lama ding dong, but don't remember what that's from!?
natieangus what did they call him in South Park??
Tarantino called him once like this, in a sorta interview
I heard that first in littlekuribo's Naruto abridged, but it could be from something else.

I loved the last twist. Can't wait for THAT sequel
I completely disagree about the twist in fact I think it is one of the best twists he's had since the sixth sense.
SPOILER:

Him pronouncing Shamalan two different ways back to back at the beginning cracked. I was hoping that it was gonna be a running gag.
I really liked the movie and et cetera
I love James McAvoy! He's such a sweetie irl and he's so talented
Went and saw it a few hours ago. MUST applause McAvoy, he did an amazing job acting as all of the identies.
Robin Underwood you're really cute
Al Albeez Thanks!
Robin Underwood got kik?
Al Albeez no I don't have a kik, sorry
Robin Underwood 🙈💔what about instagram
Alright so ending explained as soon as you could would be great thanks! :)

Z BWorth Its just a movie it ain't real
Yeah, but DID is real. Mental illness is real. And what people see in the media affecting their behaviour is real. So yeah, it's a point of concern.
Z BWorth If you're letting a fictional film alter your views about mental people you're an idiot. It's like saying Buffalo Bill from Silence of the lambs made everyone with more then two brain cells assume all trans females were serial killers

Media affects people. What we see affects us. If you can't understand that I see no point in continuing this conversation.
This review gives the film a pretty fair shake, but I still can't get past making the monster a misrepresented mental illness to actually watch it.
I have much respect for McAvoy and Shamalan.
And I despise them for making this film.
People with DID don’t have secret sociopathic killers inside.

he actually has 23 personalitys but the 24th one is coming out!
Bruh. You said no spoilers, but pretty much went into plot details that weren't known. WTF?
MasterOctagon Ikr?! Wtf
You are so underrated
seems to me people review shyamalan movies differently because IT´S SHYAMALAN.
hedwick is actually adorable

She survived because of her past .. it was very important
you missed the point of the ending i think.
One of my FAVORITE movies
Hey, can you explain the ending of Black Swan? Good job on the review.

Well Kevin can take insulin but his body would fight it because it's not body made insulin so it wouldn't affect him at all so that makes sense
Greatly enjoyed this movie. Would see it again.

Couldn't they have snapped hedwigs neck their movie over

I agree with all of this.
@FoundFlix explain the ending of Shut In
Can't wait to see this.
SPOILER ALERT
I loved this your interpretation of what you saw is different to what I saw........How can you say her back story was pointless, OK so we see her scars The Beast does his monologue about the fact that she is broken rejoice then lets her go.
But, how would Rob Schneider play this part? 🤔
have you seen or done they live movie check it out its my favorite one
I liked the movie.
signs was an alright movie but other than that his movies turned pretty bad, I didn't even know he did airbender
I thought it was a brilliant movie but I didn't like Casey's flashbacks and that Shyamalan went Hollywood and had two of the girls traipsing around in their underwear.
what if James has a newer level of D.I.D and can control different personalities and thats why he's such a good actor...... oh god no. PLEASE NO I'VE BEEN SHAMALAMADINGDONGED HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
where can I watch this movie for free??
M.Night gets a bad rep...and it seems everyone is just jumping on the bandwagon. Hollywood never wanted this man to succeed because he IS that good. His movies are highly subliminal and metaphysical and most people WON'T understand them. You have to know about his culture too to understand. I loved all of his movies including Avatar. Avatar had amazing effects and was pretty damn good for a director like him. All of these movies out here getting Oscars and such REALLY suck!!! I can't wait to see Split. I want people to ignore all of the reviews on his movies and see them and form their own opinions.
Try harder next time.
shyanalamalan
Or I see what the problem is... you were watching the movie with your Shy hater glasses on. Don't feel too bad, it's a common mistake.
10th?
M. Night is really a one hit wonder.
split was a sorry excuse of a film for just the introduction of a character and a huge timewaster, it could've been at least 1 hour shorter... wait for the dvd guys and read some of the reviews on imdb first I watched it based on the rating alone, proof that imdb is rigged.
subed.

M. Night slamalangadingdong
I used to call him Shame-a-lan for 7 years but I actually think this film marks redemption for him. However I can still feel the bad taste in my mouth for what he did to Avatar: The Last Airbender.
