I just moved into an older apartment that definitely has this issue. I have inspected everywhere carefully and see no visible signs of mold and mildew. I run a large capacity dehumidifier and a large capacity air purifier. I run small air purifiers in the bedroom and near my workstation. I keep the ceiling fans on. I use the bathroom exhaust fan when showering. Nothing works, and the HVAC system I’ll bet is the culprit.
In my place, I get a smell of toxic something and it is not cigarette nor weed. When the 2nd floor neighbor uses their Ehaust fan it comes in and sometime I smell their Waste who do we call? August 24 2023.
Sometimes when our furnace turns on we get a smell that can be described as skunky. It only happens periodically and not everytime the furnace turns on. Can you help with any ideas of what it might be?

Best guess would be a basement guy or a plumber

We just had our furnace cleaned in December and the HVAC technician said everything looked good.
Without looking at furnace, I cannot surmise where a smell may be coming from. If it only does it occasionally, that makes it more difficult to find
