this is a great find. Being born and raised in Jacksonville I love seeing this history.
Thanks for uploading this. I'm a long-time resident of Pensacola, FL and, as far as I know, this may be the only 16mm color film of WW2 era downtown Pensacola and Pensacola Beach in existence.
What a nice gesture that was done by our California friends for their work in making this tribute possible. Having been a resident of Jacksonville since 1955, the memories came back to life of a thriving Downtown that used to be. Thank you, Tim Peddy, KaluaKid and The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County as well as the music provided by M.T.Allen.
I wish for all of our friends in California who are suffering from the ravages of drought and the effects of the related fires to have Gods blessings for their safety. August 19,2016
When the song mentioned Jacksonville, the sight of the Main Street Bridge in the video made me cry. Thank you so much.
Wonderful film. Thank you.
Great video and love the music.
I'm jealous cause I wasn't born early enough to see my great grandfathers restaurant, but seeing it in this video was something... I've heard great stories about that place, unfortunately there isn't a lot of written history on the Jenks restaurant.
Wow...how interesting to see Jacksonville back then. Atlantic Blvd looks so weird without all the businesses and streets. Nice video
Thanks for the look at the neon sign of the Jenks Restaurant. That was my cousin Tom's restaurant.
😎
Normally I don't listen to country but this song fits great on one of those cross country trips. Very relaxing.
These are some amazing films - a true treasure trove of Florida history, especially living in J'ville. I have heard stories about what Atlantic & San Jose used to look like. It's amazing to see Atlantic in the 40s. Thank you for sharing.
I remember when both roads were nothing but two lane and gravel paved. There were businesses, but they were few and far between. There was a small children's steam train ride in Mandarin that cost 10 cents, owned and operated by a retired railroad engineer and his wife. It was a thrill for us youngsters that lived in Jacksonville when our parents would take us for Sunday drives to that not so close place called Mandarin where they would buy citrus and pecans from roadside stands. Today I live less that a mile from that train's original location at San Jose and Mandarin Rd. where it's totally indistinguishable by a Publix supermarket. Atlantic Blvd., then called the "Old Beach Road' by us locals was another Sunday adventure that is now, as you may know, four lanes of continuous business and traffic as is San Jose Blvd.
This 1942 semiprofessional home movie, on which the video is based, must have been a once-in-a-lifetime catch. The film was found at a garage sale. The video conversion and edit are excellent - watchable full-screen. The quality and color of this 16 mm movie make it seem current, although the cars and scenes give away the era. It is a great view for today's Floridians. The musical accompaniment matches Florida well, although the sound is a couple of generations newer - reminiscent of early Jimmy Buffett. The song "Jacksonville," performed by M.T. Allan, is a gem. Despite Allan being English, Coral Reefer fans might wonder if this is a Buffett tune they missed somewhere along the line. Thanks for the comments, Glenn.
Thank you so much. Great video
Awesome video, a sincere "Thanks" to the ones for getting this posted.
Thanks for the kind comments. Editing these found films was a labor of love. I'm so happy those who live there have enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed sharing these great vintage images.
Just fantastic! Thanks for posting this..Wow..to see Jacksonville like that..And in color too.
Cool, I'm from Pensacola too.
Really excellent job. Thanks so much for preserving a part of our history. It is so precious. I can tell you took time and care with it and it is very much appreciated.
This is great Thanks
Pensacola's magnificent Hotel San Carlos closed in 1982 and was, in a decision regretted ever since, demolished in 1993.
What a shame... We need reminders of where we come from in order to know where we want to go.
Good song, loved the old films
Your sound track music is excellent...!
that music choice was very upsetting
Jax looked different back then very awesome vid!!
My grandfather was born in this year. In fact, today’s his 79th birthday!
I'm pretty sure that was Pensacola Beach. Everything from 2:32 (P-Cola train station) on is in Pensacola.
The music is not from the same time period and that takes away from the video for me.
AMAZING video. Thank Your for the upload.
i live in duval, this is a cool a** video thanks for uploading it!
This is wild. Downtown Jacksonville all lit up with neon. No one goes downtown unless they have to (court or city hall) now.
This is cool. I think the song is perfect. :)
Did you have to use hill-billy music? Of course you did; what am I thinking.
Damn, did a bomb drop on Jax at some point? Downtown looks 1000x more developed 70 years ago.
Yeah how the hell did that happen 🤔
very good film
Wow. That's amazing. Thanks for uploading this!
Too bad down town isnt like that now. It looked like a happening place and now it is a crap hole dump thats falling apart. I love this video though cause history is awesome. Especially like the Atlantic blvd pic. Thanks for this vid
now why is that?
Thank goodness for the MUTE option. ☺
Cool Vid
Muted like a mother.
lmao a song about jacksonville lol
I love the song!!
Nice film. The music doesn't fit at all. Glen Miller big band type would have worked perfect.
Fendernirvana Yes. It would fit with the period, and be better to boot!
Mute the video and enjoy.
Can you tell me the name of the song and who sings it??
"Jacksonville" by M.T. Allen
KailuaKid I also found out that Josh Turner sings it from his Long Black Train album
السلام عليكم هل يوجد أحد على قيد الحياة! اتمنى ان تكونوا بخير وصحة 🖐🇸🇦
The subtitles were really unnecessary and a distraction, maybe it would be nice to have all four parts combined into a version without them.
Great film! Horrible music!
