I am a native Cantonese speaker. Your pronunciation (tone) is very good. I understand you perfectly. It's fun to watch you with how excited you are to learn the language. You will do well so long as you keep at it. Agreed, Cantonese is a very different language since the spoken and written languages are different. Best wishes to you!
I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel! I've been learning Cantonese for a little while and I totally relate to the lack of resources- Your progress is super encouraging tho, so I will definitely be using your tips! I've also been trying to get into TVB dramas so thanks for the recommendations as well haha :) Also if you're looking for more resources, I like the yt channels Cantonese with Brittany and MtzCherry, which have lessons/tutorials, and AshaETC, who is more vloggy/storytime-ish
CaitlinM Awe, thank you for watching! I wish you the best of luck with your studies! I already know of MtzCherry and Cantonese with Brittany so I’ll definitely check out AshaETC, thank you!
Wa! Nei ho ging ah! I never thought I would hear a black girl saying in perfect Cantonese how much she loves watching "On call 36 siu si" and "si to hang jeh"!!! You are so amazing!! I want to use your video to help motivate my ABC kids who now only respond to my Cantonese in English. They don't realize how much they are missing out by not speaking Cantonese with me. Keep it up, Grace! You are so awesome!
Your Cantonese is impressive! My partner is learning and I think he's doing phenomenally but girrrrl.. Your Cantonese is really amazing! Even my parents applauded when I showed them your videos! 💜 P.s. I speak Cantonese myself lol
Hi Grace, I am also a native Cantonese speaker, and I was educated in the UK back in the days , so it is very interesting for me to watch your videos as I can related to the living in London too! Keep up the good work, your pronunciation is very accurate. Let me know if you have any question at all or if you need any help:)
I'm so impressed with you all the time! As a Canto-speaker, I really am slipping and watching you speak is making me more motivated to speak more. Thanks for these videos, I love them!
Your video was suggested to me and I just have to say wow I’m so impressed! Cantonese isn’t really all that popular to learn but I’m so glad you’re doing it. And I’m sure you’ve been told already, but your pronunciation is super super good (I’m a native speaker). :)
Your personality is so cute! I'm learning Cantonese on and off because like you say, there's not a lot of resources out there so I'm still beginner level. Tbh it might just be an excuse for me being lazy, I'll start watching dramas check out that book! Thanks for the tips I'm feeling super motivated :)
Thanks so much for sharing this! Cantonese is my heritage language and i'm trying to learn how to speak it more fluently. There's most definitely an agenda that mandarin is pushed vs. cantonese in the educational system and it's sad. If the amount of resources for canto were the same as mando? BRUH, i'd also be fluent as well!!!
Thanks for the video, friend! I am trying to learn but I don't get past the first few lessons of my Cantonese textbook. :( So glad to hear you are learning it as well. :)
Hi Grace, just saw your channel by chance. Your Cantonese is very good and fluent. I am Hong Konger and just want to let you know that youngsters in HK don't like TVB so much as its TV programmes are a bit old-school. People like watching ViuTV more than TVB.
Amazing, good for u. As a Chinese, I'm trying to learn Cantonese but there is no one speaking Cantonese around me. By the way, Hong Kong movies are really good.
The Wingshatsui channel is good if you want learning content at a more advanced level! It’s subbed and they talk a lot about about funny Cantonese expressions. It’s subbed in Cantonese so that’s great (lots of standard Chinese mixed in as well but you’ll probably be able to tell what’s what if you’re advanced/upper intermediate). Really recommend!
I love your passion for my mother's tongue. If I ever in London and I saw you in the streets, I would love to practice speaking Cantonese with you. My speaking level isn't the best. I learned to comprehend and speak Cantonese first. However, I grew up in the U.S. so I quickly learned English and how it became my primarily language. I try to continue to speak Cantonese with my family and sometimes family friends or strangers.
I've been learning Cantonese for a few years on and off but I've been properly into it again since lockdown. My dad is Chinese but only speaks hakka and spoke English to me at home. Have you been to Hong Kong? I'm hoping to visit there soon. Nice video, subbed!
Yeah you nailed it by watching cantonese movies channels. Like tvb and cantonese films. See stephen chow films they are funny. Listen to the words. I am cantonese too and speak with my family.
Wow. Your pronunciation is pretty good. I am a native speaker. Cantonese is one of the most difficult languages to learn for foreigners in the world. How many languages do you speak?
Hi Grace you are so nice.lf you have a chance to trip to Melaysia. I guarantee you should be get more supprise. Especially you visit in ipoh or kuala Lumpur Because in this two places i mentioned a lot of Chinese ppl here was cantonese speaking. Supprised!! I am Melaysian
Sure! Some of my favourites are: 1. The Hippocratic Crush (On Call 36小時) 2. Line Walker (使徒行者) 3. Forensic Heroes (法證先鋒) 4. Brutally Young (十八年後的終極告白) All of these have more than one season apart from Brutally Young. Enjoy! ^^
@@Guresu Wow thanks you are so nice!! I will definitely check these out. ^^ Hopefully I can progress my Cantonese like yours!! I'm also British, and it's nice to see other Brits learning more difficult languages too.
Well CantoneseClass101.com taught Cantonese with jyutping, so by constantly seeing it and learning from it in their, I just got used to it and learned how it worked. There should be some videos about it on UA-cam if you want to learn ^^
Thank you for this video!! I really want to learn bc itd make my mom proud:”) You mentioned that you studied cantonese for three years, how often did you have to learn a day/week?
Well, I didn’t really have a strict schedule, I know at the beginning I definitely spent a lot more time on it than I do now, but I think at least 3 hours per week is a good amount of time to make progress! I also spent a lot of time watch tv dramas when I had holidays at school so I can’t really give you an exact number. But good luck! I’m sure you’ll make your mum proud ^^
Grace, I'm a Cantonese speaker and trying to teach my kids a better foundation for the language. What podcast and UA-cam source would you recommend? I also came across some that taught the written instead of the spoken. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I definitely need to master the tones and be consistent with my learning. How long would you say it took you to become somewhat comfortable (not fluent, but comfortable in some conversation) with Cantonese?
Hmm, I'm not too sure since I started learning a long time ago. Buttt I'd say maybe 6 months for a very BASIC conversation? It's all relative to the individual though, I think.
Wow, great job learning cantonese! Thanks for the tips! I feel a bad that I didn't learn more from my mom. But now that I have kids and since she's passed, I feel I really need to up my cantonese so that I can teach my twins properly. It was really awesome that I found out about your channel from my cousin showing me this news coverage of you. ua-cam.com/video/7caNPweOHx0/v-deo.html I look forward to seeing your other videos. :)
you are amazing. you speak cantonese so well. i believe you understand well too. watch Stephen Chow movies. his movies are very funny. would you plz recommend youtube channels for beginners to learn french/japanese? 'lei ho sai lei ar'! Love you!
I just feel curious how come you pick Cantonese as a language to learn? No offensive at all, cause I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I think cantonese is one of the most difficult languages to learn. Plus, Spanish or Mandarin is more useful and popular language.
I actually have a video on my channel where I speak six languages, and there I explain the little story of how I started to learn Cantonese. But I continue to learn it because I think Cantonese is a very beautiful and fun language! Mandarin or Spanish may be more useful, but I don't just learn languages because of how useful they are, I learn them because they're fun!
I think you should try a website called italki! There you can find people who speak English and want to learn Cantonese to do a language exchange with. ^^
I started dating my boyfriend who is Asian American who speaks Cantonese. I really wanna learn so when I meet his parents I can impress them just a little
but as i am chinese and studied chinese mandarin language, cantonese to me is very easy, no need to learn, (bcoz cantonese is one of the many dialects of main chinese mandarin language, so called 'local version' 方言 ,note : i am not cantonese) ...
the issue with Cantonese is that the CCP is pushing this idea that Written Chinese can work for any Chinese language. It only works for Mandarin, I personally think Hong Kong should move to an alphabet system

Once you able to speak Cantonese, learning Mandarin becomes so much easier. It is like having a PHD , being asked to do an elementary school homework.
Me as a Cantonese speaker, I think you are pronouncing the words so accurately and have the accents of Cantonese people :) you are doing soo well, 加油😁

Six are just the basic tones. There are actually nine. The other three are just tones that you simply drag it longer than normal.
I find pronouncing the fourth tone a little difficult.
thank uuuuuu

I’m Cantonese but can’t speak it- *intense crying*
Pick it up!
Ironically people in Canton speak less Cantonese than people in Macau/Hong Kong
Ikr!
But Guangzhou has so many working migrants from other Chinese provinces who are more familiar with Mandarin. This is also the case in Shenzhen.
