The way my piggies learned not to nip is if I say “ouch” a little bit louder than my normal speaking voice, and act as if I’ve been hurt more than I actually was. After putting the piggie back down, I point to where he nipped and say “ouch” to remind him. They really don’t like to see anyone in pain, and seem to remember!

She is genuinely awesome & A treat to watch. The way she handles one of the pigs, swiveled around like a rubik's cube, from anywhere to smelling mouth cavity, nail check, ear cleaning or penile satitation, everything is in check!!Can't wait to see what havoc or not is to be observed next.💗

I can back up this theory that it's mainly confident outgoing piggies that nip... I've had 25 guinea pigs and only 2 have ever nipped, both of them were the only ones born into my care (I rescued a pregnant sow and raised the 2 pups myself) all the others were rescued or purchased at an older age.
My two girls that nip have been extremely well tamed from the day they were born, both of them are extremely confident, I've never known either of them to bolt and they stand still in the cage to be picked up or touched, one is even trained to jump up onto my arm, she willingly comes to me, where all of my others do the typical run away.
Both of them are very sassy with me and aren't afraid to let me know if they're not in the mood to be handled. Nail clipping is a nightmare with them even though they've had them clipped every month from birth. These two are completely different to the others and the only reason is that they were born here and are just very confident.
Alot of people would rehome a nippy pig but I personally do not mind it, these two girls are actually my favourites out of the bunch and I respect when they've had enough of handling, I don't do anything to try and stop it because I can't stop it, it's just the way they are. Neither of them have ever drawn blood, they just pinch.
They're almost 4 years old now and I love them regardless! :)

The pig in my picture was a bold, little guy! He rose on his back legs first day we met, didn’t want to leave me after I held him, so he came home with me! Two days later, Teddy fell asleep on me with his eyes closed, very confident piggy. And oh, did he nip me xD so many times, when he wanted to go home and it didn’t go fast enough! When on the floor, or in the cage, he would actually ask to be picked up, and once up, he went full pancake immediately 😄☺️❤️ I miss my boy ❤️

We had guinea pigs as class pets (one was a senior and the other a baby) in high school, the same year that we got the baby pig a new kid was very rough/borderline abusive with them. Ever since then the baby would bite me (her primary caretaker) and anyone else who tried picking her up. She learned that if she nipped a kid they would put her down. Eventually I graduated and took the pigs with me. It has been a full year since I brought Amber home with me and started her trust training and she has learned how to trust again. She is now four years old and I can trust her enough to know that she won't hurt my little cousins when they visit.
When I say trust training, I mean showing her over time that I (and other people) am not a threat. With Amber I realized she preferred me showing her my hand and come in from the side to scoop her up instead of grabbing her from the top.
Again, her problems stemmed from the abuse of that student. She learned at a real young age that people are out to hurt her. She was scared every time someone came in to pet her/pick her up. I needed to observe her behavior and adjust to show her everything is going to be okay.
I am not a guinea pig expert but this is what worked for me.

I got sort of bit, no blood drawn but she sure did chomp on me. I was giving my 2 girls a couple blueberries when my younger girl mistook my plump round fingertip for a blueberry! She held on like a tiny pitbull for a few seconds, she's one of those skittish piggies that always grabs her snack and runs away. We played tug of war for a few seconds until she realized the error of her ways. Can't trust those Aby's, they're all nuts 😜🐹

You're little assistant is so cute. Most Guinea pigs I have had only really bite if I'm doing something they don't like like cutting their nails. And I've had a few that would accidentally get me while trying to either get the food out of my hand or pull on my shirt to tell me they have to pee.

My Gilly is one that is very outgoing and curious, and she will nibble on my hand once in awhile. It is never a strong bite...just a little nibble, almost like a " hey let's see what lotion you used today" lol. She loves treats and will also give me little kisses after I give her a pea flake. I have a biter who isn’t confident but is outgoing. She seems to have really bad anxiety and even seems to breath fast like a panic attack. :( but she bites all the time and I worry about her biting the vets because she bites with intent to harm. I have to wear layers of clothing to prevent her from hurting me when I’m doing nails. She’s a sweet pig but has major anxiety about almost everything. I can’t blame her for lashing out in scary situations.
My worst bite was when a pig got scared during lap time and hid under my shirt. She bit me and drew blood and I had a scar for 4 years. I’m actually sad it’s faded because she’s dead now. It was a nice reminder of her. :(

I think biting is a good way protecting and survive. My first baby did it as if by reflex... automatically? She scared my friends and my family but I thaught her to do tarot cards, she chooze one or two from my minioracledeck and then she threw them up in the air and I did a little reading. So noone really disliked her. She just had a different path into the hearts. She was my dearest, dearest friend. My love. Thank You for this wonderful video. Maria in Sweden with friends🎀

I’ve had my piggies for 2 weeks. My male guinea pig, Truffle, is becoming very tame! He’s super friendly and noisy! He gives me a nip when I hold him but I’ve noticed it’s a way of him communicating that he needs the toilet. Every time he nips me , I put him down and he does a wee straight away!
Today, I was holding him and was holding him with a blanket so didn’t have my hands near him. Looking back, He was clearly searching for my hands to communicate he needed the toilet, because he was looking and sniffing around and changing positions a lot. Then I felt my chest get super wet and warm! Lol!
He was clearly trying to find a way to communicate he needed the toilet! Guinea pigs are smart animals!

I was bit by my friends male piggy when we put mine and hers together, with her female pig in the next cage. My piggy was buddah pig.
My friends pig bit me when itried to stop ot from biting mine. He hung from my finger until the skin broke and then I had a good open knuckle with skin flap that needed stitches.
I was only 7 when it happened. Lesson learned.

The only time my piggie tries to nip is when my daughter tries to take him away from me when I’m cuddling him. I like to think that he doesn’t want to go back to his cage because he loves cuddles. He uses his back legs to knock her hands away and chomps his teeth as a warning then lies down to cuddle me again.

When I was a kid my mom ran somewhat of a guinea pig rescue. Really it was a few of her friends would rehome theirs to her because they knew she loved animals and already owned some. My mom would end up missexing some of them and of course we got extra piggies lol. There was a point we had about 20 of them and one of my jobs was to go out and feed/ clean everyone before and after school. I really loved that job because as you said they are generally very nice and not aggressive. There were these two little black guineas that were the youngest at the time and they were so mean! I dreaded getting to their cage because they would actually charge me and bite HARD. My mom would tell me it's because they thought my fingers were food and they were just excited... no those were some mean piggies lol.

I have been extremely lucky. Most of my pigs over 33 years were "lick" pigs. Just lick and lick and kiss! I had so many lickers. Love it! I had a couple that bit a lot and it were two that had been abused in the past so when they came to me, they just had that habit. Only one time did Sammy bite hard enough for blood. Mostly it is a hard nibble. I did have a couple nibbler pigs but mostly it is your finger or hand in the way, especially when they are hungry and think you are food. The other time for nibbles if you have very salty fingers, and another is if you are holding them too long (I mean, like a darn hour! hehe), they may signal you to say, come on, put me back in my house already. If a piggy is really sick, once in a blue, it can happen. It is mostly always the human's fault in my honest opinion. You are so awesome doing this video. You rock, Saskia and Ursula!

Btw, I've had a nipper since I got my first piggy, who's 3 now! Always seems the abby's are more attitude prone, and she's also very confident and dominant, but as she's getting older, she's better, I speak to her very softly and calmly, and she knows me a long time now, so she really does trust me, and we have a great bond, she never really drew blood though, just maybe a little mark for a few hours.🤗

For anyone out there even _SLIGHTLY_ deterred from adopting a guinea piggy, in the extremely unlikely event that you might get "nibbled", I thought I’d share the following story with you, to provide some perspective! [I first heard Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki (often referred to as "Dr Karl") - an amazing Australian science communicator extraordinaire, who appears on a live weekly late-night link-up on BBC Radio 5 Live's Up All Night, with Rhod Sharp - relate this true story several years ago.] Please, *ENJOY!😳:-*
'Rugby player failed to notice opponent's embedded tooth in his forehead for three months!'
    [Last updated at 20:41 17 July 2007]
A rugby player in Australia kept competing for more than 3 months without realising he had an opponent's tooth lodged in his forehead.😬
Ben Czislowski, a former National Rugby League prop playing for Brisbane team Wynnum, had a clash of heads with opposing forward Matt Austin during an April 1 match against Tweed Heads and had a head wound stitched up afterward.🤕
But Czislowski later suffered an eye infection and complained of lethargy and shooting pains in his head.😳
A visit to his doctor last week revealed a tooth still embedded in his head.🤭
"I can laugh about it now, but the doctor told me it could have been serious, with teeth carrying germs," said Czislowski, who kept the tooth as a souvenir.😵💀
"I've got the tooth at home, sitting on the bedside table," he said. "If he (Austin) wants it back he can have it. I'm keeping it at the moment as proof that it actually happened."🦷
In 2004, Australian rugby league hooker Shane Millard also had an opponent's tooth removed from his head while playing for English club Widnes.🤦🏻‍♀️
Two years earlier, Australian Jamie Ainscough's arm became so badly infected while playing for Wigan in England there were fears it would be amputated before the source - an embedded tooth - was discovered💪.'
So I’m sure you all *LOVED* & appreciated that cheery nightmare-fodder tale, & apart from realising little guinea pig bites are a rare occurrence, absolutely always _DO_ follow Saskia’s advice about flushing out any [very occasional] deep bites/wounds. But, at the very least, you now know things could _DEFINITELY_ be *SO* much *WORSE,* especially if Rugby football players are involved!🏉

I had a piggy like that. She would bite all the time, not strongly, but literally _everything_ that went under her nose. It was extremely annoying, and we didn’t understand why she did it. I tried several things, to say "shush!", to push her nose away (gently but firmly), but nothing worked. Then she got sick, and the vet told us she had genetic heart problems and that her lungs were full of water. And that those kinds of diseases often go along with OCD-like behaviours (aka constant nipping)... she had to be put down, and I feel bad because I didn’t understand she had a problem and I was annoyed with her :/

You are so right. My little Squeakers us to grab my finger and not bite me but hold on to it to tell me she didn’t like me to put my hand in her cage and clean it out.l had to take her out to clean her cage he cage was 2 by 3 feet that was before I had learned that they need a bigger cage.

my late dad found out how sharp bunny theeth are, my dad worked in the timber trade and had been sitting on wood having his dinner, he had come home and was bending down to pick something up and my sister late new zealand white rabbit called Frisky smelt the wood on his pants and bit him, he came up rather fast

I've had an interesting experience with my two teenage guinea pigs. When I first got them at 1-2 months, after they got over their initial fear after moving in Rose became a biter. But it was never vicious or anything. She would sniff your fingers like "Oh what's this?" and then out of curiosity take a bite, even if I hadn't been touching food. She caught me out a few times and made me bleed but then grew out of it after about a month or so and the only time she's bitten me since was when my hand was covered in dust from the dry food after putting it in her bowl and I let her sniff my finger (so my fault).
Lissa is even more interesting. She is the sweetest guinea pig when she is in the cage, she always comes up to lick your fingers and never bites. But if you have her out of the cage even just for lap time she becomes a biter. Again, not vicious, she doesn't bite hard, but what she does is pull on you like guinea pigs pull veg under shelter to eat. If I wiggle my finger/hand/arm/collar bone (yep she tried that too!) she lets go and the moment you put her back in the cage she's fine and sniffs and licks again but she is a bit of a nightmare to hold right now. I'm hoping she grows out of this phase soon too.

My girl only really nipped (well, she actually got through skin, like I had a little skin flap to play with afterwards. No blood though.) when I was giving her cucumber and she was really excited for it so she reached really far with her teeth. The lower incisors went right through my thumb.

You're right it's definitely the outgoing tame ones who nip more. My girl Sophie is a piggy that bites out of curiosity. When I spot clean the cage she like to watch me and nip at me if I get too close (playful nip doesn't hurt at all) I think she thinks it's a little game. She's definitely a troublemaker 😂 but I never get mad or upset even if blood is drawn cause how could you at those cute faces.

Oh my gosh I just found out that the tiny tap on nose I used to try to teach my guinies is actually not effective and abusive and not ever gonna work and I have a mental breakdown that I scared and mislead my piggies that i don´t like them by this behavior! Now I will tell everybody and won´t ever do it again. I hope to recover mine and piggies relationship. Thank you Saskia for your videos. Mine usually nibble now (used to bite quite a bit) when they want to stop cuddling and go down, so i guess they don´t really want to cuddle. (They are skinnies) I appritiate any response/tip/

I've been nipped pretty hard by my Dale twice now, but he tests everything with his teeth when he's exploring, much to my toe (was barefoot during floor time, apparently he doesn't test my socks) and finger's (again during floor time, I was leaning on my hand and couldn't move it before he decided to check it with his teeth) chagrin. Both times kind of hurt, but no worse for wear. He's close to year old, though I don't have an exact age because the local shelter didn't know. My Chip also bit, and even tugged, on my finger once, but that was my fault because I was giving my 3 boys a treat and he got impatient with me (he was trying to get a treat from my hand, and missed), lol.

I had a guinea pig that had horrible peripheral vision so as long as you didn’t come from the side of him he was fine. Even then, he would whip his head around like he was gonna take your finger off and instead he would kinda just hit you with his teeth. Wouldn’t even pinch the skin, just like bumping you with his teeth. It was like once he got his head around and realized it was your hand he would pull up. Maybe I was reading into it but that’s how it seemed. The rest of my pigs are usually just tasting you...lol. Once they know you aren’t food they don’t do it again.

A quick puff of air blown through the lips into their face usually cures nippers after a couple of times. They dont like it and soon associate it with biting. Like.. "hang on every time I nip that wind happens, maybe I had better not nip".
Not had a failure yet. Although very unusual for a piggy to bite.
    Stay safe all x

ik this video was months ago but I'm kinda curious about my guinea pig and him nipping. I've had him for a little over a year now and it's always been normal, he never does it really hard and I've noticed that he does it when he's playful. he'll start popcorning and running around. I thought it was him being aggressive at first and angry but he doesn't show any other signs of aggressiveness, and he is pretty attached to me, too. he'll come to me when he's out of his cage on his own and sit on my lap or he'll walk to the door of the cage when I'm around, he doesn't freeze when I pick him up he'll stretch out and stuff. so I think it's his way of playing, plus he's been alone for a while, we planned on getting another guinea pig a couple months after we got him but unfortunately couldn't afford it like we had thought. so yeah, I just wanna know if that's normal because he hasn't shown any other negative signs than nipping

Saskia, you are such a big inspiration to me. I have 4 guinea pigs, two boys and two girls and you've been a big source of information ever since I got them. I have a passion for rodents (guinea pigs in particular) and next year for my junior year of highschool I will be attending a career center school and I'm taking the Small Animal Care program! You helped me to decide that taking care of our little friends is what I want to do in my life. Thank you

it would be cool to see once a week a full video tour of every guinea you have in stock, so that everyone knows weekly what is available....because many people live far from your business and they cant really drive that far not knowing if they are available....meaning a specific one they might see.

I wouldn't imagine bites to be common with guineapigs, but getting nipped, weed and pood on - this is all part of having animals. Life happens. But interesting to know more about guineapig personalities, they're such complex little cuties. Thanks Saskia, your view on life and how to handle animals is so open and passionate. You and Scotty are 2 extremely compassionate people, big hugs ♥️🌠

one of my piggies only “nips” at me when he wants me to put him back in his cage.. which is totally understandable.. but my other piggie? he straight nips at me every chance he gets 😭😭 hes very skittish, runs away with his snacks (sometimes) & doesnt even like head/ear rubs.. he’ll make a noise like im hurting him if i try to touch him gently.. so then i’ll leave him alone & pet my other piggie to show im not trying to hurt him.. i like to hand feed them a lot, but i also make sure my hands are washed after so i highly doubt im being nipped bc of a food scent.. i love my lil skittish baby a lot .. i’ve had him for about 2 1/2 months .. hopefully one day he’ll stop nipping one day😭 & actually let me pick him up with no problem..
