- Our entry to the "My Rode Reel 2020" competition won the Judges choice and is based on a true story about a Surfer (Avo) that lost his brother (Zama) to a tragic shark attack when they were young boys at their home break in Port St John’s. The ocean is the link that bonds the two in spirit.

Outside of the amazingly produced yet very very tragic story and loss for Amanzi and his family and friends, I love how you nailed every aspect of those moments you have when you're a grom, or any surfer really, and then repartee and stoke you feel every time with your best surfing mate/s, or in this case brother. I love it, amazing work. it reminds me of my older brothers story...they were also black surfers in the south coast and his best friend at the time was attacked by a shark and passed on.

Heartwrenching. The ocean is his last connection to his dear brother and the only way he can feel close to him again, yet never physically with him. I did not read the description of the film prior to watching it, and strangely my first thought when they were standing on the shore was 'sharks!'
The transkei is a very sharky coast line and the beach that he was attacked is well know for many attacks, so much so that swimming is banned
Yeh, as soon as one brother went in a bit more ahead of the other, not together, it had that vibe that something was going to happen.
We've been getting a lot of fatal shark attacks and really close calls up the mid east coast of Australia the last few years, especially since whale populations / annual migration numbers have increased so dramatically (likely some overfishing in there too).
We're on the Gold Coast and several weeks ago we unfortunately had our first fatal attack in around 50-60 years. It happened 150-200m from Snapper where they have the first comp of the WCT every year. So uncharacteristic, and unimaginable for most if you know the place. Rattled a LOT of locals down the south end of the coast. It's such an unfathomable loss, and you would feel SO HELPLESS to have lost someone so close in that way.
