  • You want your horse to trust you, and you've tried SO many tricks, methods and tactics to help your horse find relaxation when presented with scary objects. Yet, nothing seems to be working!
That’s because building trust with your horse may not be what you think it is...
In this episode of The Mystic Experiment, I show you exactly how I get horses to trust me. My favorite new method is so gentle, it can be utilized at liberty, in a huge pasture, with a previously untrainable wild mustang.
This isn’t your average desensitizing method.
In today’s episode of the Compassionate Cowgirl: The Mystic Experiment, you will learn...
    - How to use an innovative new tool called “The Start Button,” and why it is incredibly effective for building trust
    - How to give your horse choice in your desensitizing/confidence building sessions
    - Why you need to give your anxious horse more control
    - How to take these lessons from your horse, and apply them to your own life!
Prerequisite for this Video: “How to Read Your Horse’s Emotions”

My journey started years ago. The past 3 years have radically changed the way i interact with my man Taxi. I am also a barefoot trimmer. In order to get the buggers to stand still, so I can do my job, i have really learned to listen to them. My golden rule is this: If they pull more than twice, it is my job to find out why. Not discipline them. Do i have their leg pulled wrong, is there anything poking them, do they have physical limitations, are they sore/hurt since last trim. Or are they being a brat. Pouting that their herd mate is far away, taken away from food, dont like my present mood, just dont want to be trimmed etc. (Most of the time i try to fetch them myself, to find out their mood.) So I have tried to work with clients to get them to want to work with me. I am hoping to learn more about getting their cooperation, calmly, so I can get my job done. Fear factors range from simply they do not understand what their job is, cannot stand that long on a single leg (physical/emotional limitations), pain, past experiences with a forceful farrier/trimmer. Maybe you can do a segment on getting them to relax for hoof care.

Maddy, thank you for your wonderful videos. As a combat veteran who is working through some substantial challenges as a result of those experiences, your humanity and your approach to working with vulnerable and traumatized beings through kindness and understanding is highly applicable to my and others path forward.. These horses and your methods ask for truth, beauty, and kindness which is what many of us need in order to recover our balance . A book that has been a touchstone for me and which is very apropos to your discussion in this video is Man’s Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl, a holocaust survivor and prominent psychologist.

Another great class! I would like to add to the thought that when life gets hard, sometimes it is necessary to grieve the loss in order to move forward. Acknowledging the loss or the harm doesn’t mean dwelling on it with self pity but accepting the loss and looking for the lesson or opportunity for growth. Sorrow and grief are an important part of the process. I lost my husband in a logging accident and my faith gave me the strength to thank God for my husband and then lean on God for what was to come next. Gratitude comes from knowing that God loves us and always has our best in mind. I’m 65 now and it took a lifetime to get there. You seem to understand this at a very young age. By your statement, “How can this help me grow” instead of why is this happening to me? Keep sending out you messages Maddie, they are making a big difference!!

These self reflections are tough. :-) But I am glad you put them out there. Cancer affected me and my family recently. My dad, my rock, one of my best friends, developed cancer. I saw a strong man fall into depression. I saw a big man shrink and age. He was in pain, he said that when he heard that prognosis he felt like he had been handed a death sentence. So of course the first thing we say is why? Why us? Why our family? It took some time for all of us to look past the darkness to see something positive. But, Once I could get past the why, I saw how much it brought our already close family together more. Going through this experience with my parents, watching their love with stand dad's treatments, mom having to be the "bad guy" pushing him to eat, to move, to embrace life through his pain made me realize how strong we can be even when we don't feel so strong. I had often thought if I get cancer, no way am I going through that! But now I say I will try for my family. If my dad can do it so can I...after all I come from strong stock!

I'm so sad that I've now just watched the last video in this series. I love the horse teaching learning, the underlying psychology or reasons "why"(....that's my earlier advertising/marketing background coming out 😀), and particularly love the teatime chats to help ME as a human.....in your words...."so as to connecting with myself so as to connect with my horse "❤️. Will miss these.

One situation related to horses that happened to me...I was doing a riding dare and was asked to post bareback. I fell off and broke my wrist...I changed that into it happened for me by realising that I needed to slow down and take my time with horses instead of forcing them to do something they are not ready for and to just be more careful around them in general. The recover phase of the break also happened for me and helped me realize that my boyfriend at the time was not right for me. So I listened to those feelings and now I have a better happier life with horses and with the love of my life I met soon after I left the previous boyfriend that wasn't right for me. So I am grateful I broke my wrist. I do think about riding that same horse bareback again. But fear has not let me yet. But with your teachings Maddy...I think I can come up with a slow under threshold plan for me and my horse so we can ride bareback again.🥰

First off, I love your videos....how you explain the scientific aspects of a horse’s behavior, but also tie that in with the emotional aspects. I am relatively new to horses. A little over a year ago I started taking lessons at a local barn. I realized quickly that I enjoyed interacting with the horses even more than riding them. I was 63 at the time and my confidence in riding was a little tainted by fear, but I truly felt that if I had a connection with the horse it calmed both the horse and me. I took lessons for about 9 months, and last spring I had the opportunity to spend time with a friend and her horses where they were boarded. There was a mare there who had been there for at least 8-9 yrs. Her owner really didn’t get to spend any time with her and she agreed to let us work with her. This past July I bought her.....the best decision I’ve ever made. Because my horse and I had very little if any “training experience” I went very slowly with her and the goal wasn’t so much what can I teach her, it was more what can we do together and do it with a relaxed mind set. I have used treats for positive reinforcement. For example she was reluctant to lifting her feet for me, so I would ask, if she didn’t respond I’d stop, and patiently try again. Eventually she realized I wasn’t going away and would lift her foot, and I’d reward with a treat. After a few days she would lift her foot as soon as leaned over, but once I finished picking her hoof she’d be looking for that treat. I guess my question is when is it appropriate to start weaning them off treats whenever they comply with your request?

I am glad I stopped to watch this video and thank you for your time and motivational talk. To share my story: My vcr broke, my electronic piano broke, my sewing machine broke (half-way through a baby quilt), and so I moved on to install the replacement vcr--320 dollars of broke. At that point, I broke. I cried. I wrote it down and ended with "Why?" It was a form of release. Then I was able to say, time for a new sewing machine anyway--so I am researching machines. I returned the replacement vcr. I searched about piano repair. Not where I wanted my time to be spent, but there it is, actions of moving forward even though I might never be privy to "why, God?" answers. And so I appreciated your affirmation and reminder to go from victim to warrior.
As an aside, I am in the beginning stages of learning to ride, at 62, to spend time with my daughter-in-law and granddaughter's love of learning to ride. That is why I began watching your videos to learn about working with horses. You could say that after the all the break-downs, my last threshold, that inner circle, had been reached.
Now to get the toilet plumbing repaired before it breaks--ties in with fixing a problem when you see the signals before it is too late. Yes, we need to be aware and observant of those signals! God bless.

Great session. My example of something that happened to me was the combination of having my horse falling on top of me, breaking 5 ribs and giving me a bad concussion one week before going in for breast cancer surgery. I was very conscious of having nearly died, I had a lot of pain, yet as I was healing from the accident and surgery, I realized how incredibly lucky I was to have survived, to be able to go back to my horses, to accept their healing and assurance that I would be OK with them. FIve years later I am still so grateful for life, the beauty around me and the love from animals and people. Cancer and a near death experience taught me to be grateful for all that I have.

I have a couple of mini horses but my real passion is for donkeys. These new methods of teaching have really helped me with them more than I thought they would.
Just today my steady eddy saddle donkey decided to bolt on 2 occasions. I kept thinking why is he doing this now?
After thinking on it I know why he did and after this episode I’m positive we will move forward.

Favorite episode by far but I say that every time:) This one really hit home for me. I like what you said about validating your "victim" story but not staying stuck there!!! I think this is so key. Its ok to "feel it so you can heal it" but it's so important to not stay stuck in it. Something that happened "to me" that then became something that happened "for me."...several years ago I was in a loving relationship where we played by all the rules and from most standards, was a healthy relationship. We had been together 5 years and engaged, wedding planning. Then one day he called me on the phone, told me his love for me died, and ended our relationship. I was devastated and heartbroken. All around me, I saw my friends getting married and having beautiful babies, and I wondered "why did this happen to me?" I stayed in victim mindset for quite a while. But then with the help of my faith, my whole perspective shifted. I realized for the first time what grace really was, because I'd tried so hard to have the perfect life and play by all the rules so to speak. But really experiencing grace for the first time totally transformed me in the BEST ways, and changed in so many positive ways! Now I see it as something that happened FOR me because without that tragic event in my life, I would not have experienced such transformation. I now know what true healing and forgiveness is like. Grace, letting go of control, peace, self-love. These lessons I wouldn't trade for the whole world! Now I partner with horses to help hurting people as my life's work and I can give away the same compassion, grace, and healing that I experienced to others too!! Thanks for also always referencing your books that you find helpful because I'm a HUGE reader as well so I really appreciate this!!

Over the last 6 months I’ve been focusing on personal growth and making some massive shifts within myself. Recently things really seemed to be building momentum towards achieving new things I’ve been focused on for a while. It really felt like I was so close now. Then a few weeks ago things sort of fell apart a bit. The opportunities that had come up went away, my body started showing signs that I needed to take a brake and it just felt like a lot of good things had been taken away and it left me feeling really down & deflated. It’s funny though because it’s so true that there’s always something to be learnt from challenging situations and periods. As it happens, by the stripping away of those opportunities and ‘good things’ it shone a light on another area of my life I had been coasting in, my work/career, that actually was the real route of why I had been feeling so down. I had been neglecting some of my values in this area and it was leaving me more reliant on other things to bring me joy to balance it out. Had those opportunities remained I’m not sure I would have looked or seen what was going on within me around my work life. I choose to be grateful for this insight, challenging as it may be to g through, because I really do want to continue building a life for myself that makes me happy. So that’s my new focus right now, getting into the core of what I really want to be doing career wise and starting on that journey. Maybe this challenging time has been what I needed to continue to move forward with building a well balanced, happy life.

Very, very good video. I absolutely love watching how you were able to work with this gorgeous horse! I will use all that I learned in my creative project. It makes so much sense to allow the person or animal we are wanting to build trust with to have the control to let us know when they are ready to engage. Many people don't realize even with dogs how important this is to build trust. Of course we can use this on some level with people too. Bravo!!! I also love Temple Grandin. I am reading her book 'Animals in Translation' which is incredible. Years ago I hear about what she did for the cow industry. Thanks so much for sharing your gifts! Horses want and need three basic things. To be: 1. SAFE 2. Comfortable 3. Feel they have a 'Locus of Control' (the ability to control their environment). The best way to teach horses is to teach them how to to make us do what they want. For example: Teaching them how tell us to how and when to give them a release. When I teach a horse, I try to teach them to think how to control what I do. Horses do things to relieve pressure so, I teach how to tell me to do exactly that. My emphasis is always to to teach them how to tell me. It is amazing what they will do if they think they can control what's happening to them.

For me my situation is off topic but even though it was an extreme struggle for me. It's extremely difficult for me to talk about it without coming across as though I'm bashing anyone, I'd never go there. You see, I attended a wonderful church for 14 yrs and had an amazing pastor whom I highly respect. For the last 4.5 yrs that we attended I had an internal struggle about some of the standards he enforced. Standards such as" if we didn't wear nylons or stepped outside without them we were backslid, having to wear clothes nearly 2-3 times larger than I needed so you couldn't see curves, no make-up, covered elbows etc because to do so wasn't modest. I'm 100% for God's word, however I felt like these standards weren't Biblical and I struggled. I was scared to follow my own heart and choose to change. This past
May 2019 we left that church and are attending a new one. Same Faith just not so strict that it's hard to exist. Maddy, I can't tell you how liberated we feel. My clothes are my size, I've begun wearing make-up and we are wearing our wedding rings. I still get uneasy about running into former friends from church. I say former friends because when people leave that church they're instructed to not have anything to do with you and nobody has even checked on
us. But you know? It's okay, I'm okay with it. I'm happier, I'm feeling like a woman and not a robot that walks, talks and thinks like everyone else. I'm FINALLY ME.

my most recent personal challenge of something happening to me is about a nuisance bear coming repeatedly up to my cabin and frightening me and my horses ...the way i can turn this from a why is this happening to me is to understand that this is an opportunity for me to grow in 2 ways possibly more ..first it gives me an opportunity to ask for help ..i am very self motivated and self directed and usually can do anything all by myself ...but i need help with this situation ..it is potentially very dangerous and i do not have the tools or the knowledge of how to deal with a bear that is so habituated to people that nothing scars it ...the other opportunity it gives me is to learn the skills i need to be able to protect my home and animals in a good way ..to learn how i can deter this bear from my home and horses ..it also gives me a chance to work on acceptance that life is not just about me and my goals sometimes it is about stopping and finding safety until the threat passes ...i love this idea of a start button for my horses ...my Faith is a very dominant and confident horse ...but i ran into her lack of confidence one day when she threw me when i tried to ride her a bit further away from my other two horses..this was a pretty bad fall awhile back .. so i am in the process of re-starting her and trying to find the places where i missed her no 's ...this start button is going to be a huge help ! thank you so much !

What happened with Mystic??? I was enjoying the re-starting of Mystic. I wonder what his issues turned out to be if they ever resurfaced in the positive reinforcement training

I haven’t tried this yet because I haven’t had a need for it but my question is what happens when the horse is so scared that it doesn’t even care about treats or the cones? And what happens if the horse just completely leaves the session every time and you don’t make any progress?

I want a better relationship with my horse, Ranger, that becomes a joy rather than a task. Specifically, I can make Ranger perform all the tasks that "a good horse" is required to demonstrate. However, during this performance, all of our abilities are forced. I would rather participate in an open dialogue that creates a balanced relationship between two willing partners; me and Ranger.
Therefore, when questioned about why I'm not riding my horse but spending so much time on ground work that seems elementary, I resist giving into the criticism that doesn't agree with the idea of developing a deeper relationship with Ranger. I choose to complete the elementary tasks that improve communication and because I know that it will build trust and a stronger bond with my equine partner, rather than believe that if I don't "master" the horse's behavior I have failed.
I choose partnership instead of punitive force.
