Muslims living under Muslim rule have to pay Zakat, which goes to the poor and society's needs. Non Muslims living under Muslim rule have to pay Jizya which goes to the government for them using public services. Zakat is more than Jizya. Non Muslims are not forced to pay Zakat as they are not Muslims and Zakat is a part of the Islamic pillars. Also Non Muslims are not forced to perform Jihad if the land is attacked but for Muslims it is an obligation to perform Jihad. How is that not fair?
I known I shouldn't be quoting Wikipedia on this, but Mohammad do you think the jizya was a sort of payment for not having to go to the army for non Muslims? Since at that time Muslims of a Muslim state would call it jihad, and hence I guess that would make it an Islamic thing rather than a state thing and so the non Muslims wouldn't have to do it but would have to pay tax for the protection? I'm asking this because the article said that scholars believe this and more importantly because it mentions that Saladin ayubi (I think his name was) returned the jizya to the Christians when he found out some strong empire of that time (think it was the Romans mentioned) were going to attack the Muslim empire and he didn't feel he could protect them?
