The Echo is a good Bluetooth speaker as well as a really cool hands free way to talk to the internet, set timers, convert measurements etc. We use this everyday, more so than we use siri actually, and it's voice recognition is nearly perfect. It's a great kitchen tool, so when your hands are a mess preparing food and you don't want to dig in your pocket for your phone you can just say, Alexa, set a timer for 10 minutes, or whatever other question might be on your mind. Plus if you are a prime member it includes a lot of great free music stations that we love without even connecting to a phone. Anyone in the house can use it too, even young kids, it helps them cheat on their homework without them having to take our phones. It is just another modern convenience, enabling more lazy human behavior. No one really needs one, but we are glad we have one.
Alexa is only passive... I wish it would be more active. It only answers questions or do the commands you give. I wish it would come more forward with it.

It sounds good, if you turn it up very loud on a song with a lot of bass there is some distortion. But anything below 3/4 volume is very clear and sounds much bigger than it is. Luis Reynoso Yes, you can set alarms to go off based on time of day, or you can just say, set a timer for 30 minutes. At any point you can ask, how much time is left on the timer, and she will tell you, and yes the alarm makes a pleasant chime. We use the alarms and timers daily.

I asked your question in several different ways, first I tried your exact words, then I replaced " from church" with "near here", then I replaced "Chinese" with "pizza", then I replaced "pizza restaurants" with just "restaurants", The answer was always the same, "I wasn't able to understand the question I heard.". I also tried asking Echo when specific restaurants closed and received the answer "hmmm, I don't know, but you can take a look at the Bing search I added in the Echo App". When I opened the Echo App it did start a search for me on my Fire HDX that displays the restaurant site. I could make a quick video to show you, but it would not be very interesting. So short answer is no, Echo can't do this yet. Amazon does assure us that Echo is learning more and more everyday and will continue to improve in its ability to answer questions like yours. It feels a little bit advanced beta right now, but still really useful, we are loving it. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Sort of yes? She can control connected wireless devices, thermostats, garage door openers, power window shades, outlets. For example I just bought some WEMO smart plugs and switches that allow you to say things like "Alexa, turn on the living room light" and she will send a signal to the WEMO Plug and turn on the light. We also have a NEST thermostat that allows us to say things like, "Alexa set the temperature to 70 degrees". It's pretty ridiculous and cool. Thanks watching and posting your question.

Amazon says the local stuff is coming, but it's not quite ready yet. Be patient. By this time next year Echo will know everything about your town.

can Alexa turn off all electrics in your house?
Sort of yes? She can control connected wireless devices, thermostats, garage door openers, power window shades, outlets. For example I just bought some WEMO smart plugs and switches that allow you to say things like "Alexa, turn on the living room light" and she will send a signal to the WEMO Plug and turn on the light. We also have a NEST thermostat that allows us to say things like, "Alexa set the temperature to 70 degrees". It's pretty ridiculous and cool. Thanks watching and posting your question.
