The tenth episode of this season's How To series is "How To Fish Sinking Lines in a lake", presented by RIO brand manager Simon Gawesworth. On bright, sunny days trout usually go deeper in the water column, and anglers need to fish a sinking line to get their flies closer to the fish. Fishing sinking lines require very different skills to when fishing floating line, and in this film Simon talks about "fishing the hang", the importance of "counting the depth", and shows an incredibly fast and efficient way to change sinking lines over.
If you are new, or relatively inexperienced at fly fishing in a lake and want to increase your skills to help you catch fish when they are deep, this film will ensure you have the skills to catch more fish, and maximize your day on the water.
RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish, or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

always like this show.. I was a self taught fly fisherman but haven't done it in maybe 30 years now.. I am thinking I might want to pick it up this year and these videos really help.. we had nothing like this when I started fishing in the 60's never the less I had a lot of fun catching them on fly poles.. I also do spincasters.. but there i something about catching a fish on a fly pole that is a touch more exciting.. carry on gentlemen !
I would tie the new leader on with a nonslip mono loop. That way you can get the “handshake” connection which is less likely to cut into the loop of your fly line
Changing the line tip is great. I’ve avoided changing the line due to the time it takes otherwise.
Awh yes. Changing lines quickly is as simple as having more than one reel xD
Hey, if it works, it works.
Thanks Simon great advice, more please 👍
Very nice! Fishing the "hang" is a great technique and has induced a lot of strikes for me when fishing streamers on still water. The other item is making long casts. Seems like the trout need some time to follow the streamer before they hit and I believe they're induced to strike when challenged by a second fish. Many times when I've got one on I can see a second fish in the vicinity. I also like fishing a rod with a medium action and very sensitive tip. It's more difficult to detect a strike with sinking line vs floating line such that movement of the rod tip becomes the strike indicator long before you feel resistance from the take.
Great tips! Love the quick line change, see if I can impress someone with that!! Thanks for your video! :)
Great Video! Very Effective Technique for Bass Anglers as WELL!
This is a great technique video!
excellent presentation, very informative and super easy to digest.
Great video!
nice tips :)
Scary skilful.
Sun's out, guns out.
could you briefly comment on retrieval speed vs line sink rate?
If I'm using a fast sinking line (say 6 inch per second), and I count it down to a given depth, if I want the fly to stay closer to that dept, do I need to retrieve at about 6 inches per second?
I think that if I retrieve slower, the line will continue to sink, if I retrieve faster the line will rise toward the surface... But I don't know if thats right?
Nice video. Can you fish these fast sinking lines off the shore or is it preferably off a boat? And how long a leader do you use as the leader would hang up ahead of the sinking line if the leader is quite long
That changing line trick is the most gosh damn brilliant thing I've ever seen.
Does the mainstream series line have the hanger mark?
Great vid thx! Do you sell the fly box? Haven't seen that before.
Overland Ventures make that shit. Super super easy.
Have any videos on the intermediate line with 30' sink tip? I'd like to see a video on how it will retrieve in the water, please
Specifically this line: RIO InTouch OutBound Short WF9I/S6
Great video 👍 Is the hang marker already on the lines of RIO? If not or using a different brand😇, what is the best way to apply one?
I use metallic sharpie
breat tutorial again! How far from the tip is the hang marker though?
@2:11 Are you fishing from a submarine jesus christ
Retire your leader while your fly in the water is the dumbest technique I think I've ever seen. So many negative possibilities.
