In the manga he literally thanks eren for the rumbling. If Armin wants an empty planet so badly that he's willing to go to hell for it, then why is he even trying to stop the rumbling in the first place? Edit: People in the comments are pointing out that an alternative interpretation is that Armin didn't want the rumbling to occur and is taking responsibility because he thinks it's his fault for showing Eren his book and for helping Eren in some battles. I still think this interpretation is stupid. If Armin didn't help Eren at Marley then all the Eldians would have died when Marley obtained the founder. That's why he helped. He didn't know that Eren would go on to become a mass murderer. He has little reason to blame himself, which is why I think Armin is saying he will go to hell with Eren not because he blames himself, but because deep down he wants the Earth to be empty as he states in the finale. Of course nothing is clear and everything is open to interpretation, but I think all interpretations are stupid. ----------------------------- Also, if Eren can time travel to control titans like the one that killed his mom, then wasnt Eren invincible the entire series? What are the limits to time travel titan control? People defend Ymir by saying she has Stockholm syndrome, and if that's true it's the worst depiction of Stockholm syndrome I've ever seen. In order for Stockholm syndrome to appear the captor has to have some redeemable qualities and be shown to care or be nice to the person they captured. Fritz is never shown to have a single redeemable quality, so I don't believe that Ymir can love him. Here's a good video from a psych major explaining why Ymir Stockholm syndrome doesn't make sense. ua-cam.com/video/P5aPEnzHHKY/v-deo.html
This is an excerpt from a recent interview with Isayama: There’s a much-talked-about scene where Armin, who is struggling with Eren’s turn into a mass murderer, seems to thank him for his actions. Can you talk about the meaning behind that conversation? My thinking there wasn’t really that Armin was trying to push Eren away for the sake of justice or whatnot. It was more that he wanted to, in a sense, take joint responsibility. He wanted to become an accomplice. In order to become an accomplice, Armin had to make sure that he used very strong wording so that he could take those sins upon himself. And so that was the intent behind it. The reason he changed it was not to retcon, but because he didn’t make his intentions clear enough in the manga. He says it himself
I hate this ending. I'm here to give you the reasons why. If you want to you can go hate on me inside my profile page, I'm not here to appease the fanboys. I want to provide my opinion on this, this is not a hate piece on Attack on Titan just the ending please let me be clear this bad ending does not ruin the show for me and should not ruin the show for others however it is bittersweet. This is not a Game of Thrones Season 8 situation where one season ruins the entire show it's just these last 10 chapters. "No I don't want that! Mikasa finding another man?! I want her to think about me and no one else for the rest of her life! Even after I die...I want her to be hung up on me for a while! Ten years at least!" This is actual dialogue from the show now I'm no expert in romance my pyscho mentally insane first wife left me in about a year after getting together. I'm still depressed does this ruin my credibility on making rationale critical reviews perhaps. But goddamn, in all the time Eren had he never had a care in the world for any romance with Mikasa. She has made repeated advances since they were children even after learning he had 13 years to live for a damn long time, this man still did not care. I get the author wanted to play into the EreMikasa fandom (even though Historia and Eren is a way better couple and isn't i*c*st and yes banging your adopted siblings is i*c*st get over it you miscreants). The dialogue is terrible and makes no sense. Maybe Isayama was voicing his own opinions on this kind of thing ( I relate heavily) but it’s so out of left field and makes no damn sense. Now he's worried about being cucked? You never even kissed her ffs. Now that we've taken a look at Eren let's analyze some other major let downs. Mikasa being able to free Ymir by killing Eren due to Ymir loving her rapist genocidal p*d*p**** husband so much so that she wanted to kill herself but still serve him after she died? Fine. But how is this incredibly shocking and heavy plot development portrayed to us? It's hard to believe, but The Founder Ymir was in love with Karl Fritz. That's why Ymir's restriction has persisted for the last 2000 years. With no additional context of how such a contrived situation developed. What an asspull. In all fairness maybe this plot point deserves a pass because of the Stockholm syndrome Ymir gained from being with her husband from the time of 10. Armin wanting to express his condemnation of Eren's actions while also reassuring him as a friend? Fine. But how is this incredibly complex series of statements and emotions shown to us? Eren. Thank you. You became a mass murderer for our sake. This is genocide apologia. He made a quote on quote terrible mistake HE KILLED BILLIONS and wiped 80% of the Earth wtf. YEAH GREAT BUT CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW ELDIA WAS TURNED TO RUBBLE LATER WHAT WAS THE POINT IN STOPPING EREN?. Some other picks: Jean and his fellow corps having extremely emotional goodbyes only to become titans for a a few days only to be then instantly reverted back as if nothing happened. Yelena literally vanishing from the story this is not a case of Araki forgot which is an urban legend the great Hirohiko Araki would never forget Isayama would. Falco being able to fly and save the alliance just because of a memory. The alliance managing to fend off an assault by dozens of organized titan shifters with the only casualty being Levi's leg with unlimited thunder spears and gas for assurance. Again I would like to reiterate my thank you to Isayama for all the hard work and great storytelling he made for the first 130 chapters of AOT the ending was terrible and I am allowed to say that. AOT is still one of the best anime in existence but the ending was bad.
@@jimmy3261 source? Trust me bro? You can make guesses as to what happened in post credits but she could also not be married to the guy, and the kid could also not be hers. Its possible, and she gets burried next to him in the end, not her husband.
@@thered4048Yeah it's literal headcanon from Titanfolk. She has a husband, but still gets buried beside Eren? With the scarf? Idk that really doesn't make much sense tbh. At that point she'd be married to him far longer then Eren. Like i don't care about her moving on eventually or whatever, but with the themes of the ending and what I just said it really makes 0 sense.
Summed up the entire series in a single sentence, brilliant. Isayama really made a series about conflict and complex themes into a NTR romcom. Isayama, what a clown you are.
2:05 You must not be familiar with the concept of detachment. Eren was not calm when he was telling Armin that he massacred 80% of humanity. He was detached.
@@angelchavez4245 and the thing to break him out of that detachment was the thought of Mikasa marrying somebody else? come on. we were never shown him being romantically invested in her to that extent
Everyone defending that and saying it's "understandable" like it isn't completely out of left field AND extremely selfish and messed up when he never told her he loved her if that were true. Even the lines were horrible. Like there was a way to convey he would miss Mikasa and be sad not to spend a life with her and they chose the worst way by him wishing she would mourn him and not move on for 10 freaking years. Leaving aside how stupid and pathetic he looked, it's just bad.
@@MagiaBasederen was about to die twice in the series (early on when he got ate by a pure titan, and again in the crystal caves when he was willing to die) still never broke down and cried about Mikasa or being afraid to die
Yep. I am going to pretend AOT ends in for when they were able to see the sea. When it became political and Eren and Jaegerists was turned into a character that reminds me of Islamic Extremist/Jihadists mindset, I end up not liking it. Not a fan of genocide route. Total disrespect to the values of Scout regimen/Survey corps.
I mean that is one of the major reason why he did it. After everything he's been through and his own belief on freedom, of course he would want to do it. It's like Reiner when he continued the attack on the Eldians even though he knew they weren't devil, at their core it's for their own selfish reasons.
@@Azurald55yea that’s great and everything. But “I just wanted to do it” is a clear why of saying “I did it but I’m confused as to why I did it.” Eren has convictions. He believes that every person is special and has a right to be free as soon as they are born. But the sad thing is he never said this in paths with armin. Instead he calls himself an “ordinary idiot.” Another sad thing is that he must take life in order to have that freedom because Tybur and the outside world alienated them. THIS is what he should be crying about. The cruel world made him into a monster. Instead he cries of mikasa forgetting about him lmao. This is poor writing and I cannot believe people blatantly go out of their way to ignore these things which by the way are RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.
@@Vortex_ICEcold I don't think this ending is perfect by any means but him saying "I just wanted to do it" does fall in line with his character a bit. Throughout the series we have been told Eren is prone to act on emotion and impulse and has a strong desire to do something even if it is totally ridiculous. We also see glimpses of Eren especially through season 3 mention how he wants to eradicate all his enemies on the other side of the ocean. So yes he was doing it for "freedom" and for his friends to lead peaceful lives but ultimately he still wanted to do it because he wanted to eradicate his enemies aka the rest of humanity who hated eldia. The problem is that even though technically the Rumbling would save his friends and provide temporary freedom, he's the only guy if given the founding powers to do something so extreme and idiotic such as genocide of everyone outside the walls, which is what Armin brings up in the conversation: "you can't have wars if there are no people? is this some sort of bad joke?". Eren since season 1 has always been the guy to do something extreme or impulsive simply because he wanted to, and when given the powers of the Founding titan it's exactly what he does, as he's so obsessed with his own sense of what is right and wrong. This inevitably leads to his idiotic decision of the Rumbling, which is also what I believe he meant by when he said "Cz I'm an idiot." My main problem with the ending mostly comes with Ymir and Mikasa like that was just kinda dumb to me lol
@@NxeonStr1ke he blatantly states he wanted his friends to be seen in the highest regard so no he did not want to exertminate EVERYONE. If he did say otherwise then it’s bad writing. Him wanting to do it does NOT align. If you go back zeke literally asks why do you want this violence to continue and even armin asks why did he ever want to see the outside world. And he RESPONDS “BECAUSE I WAS BORN INTO THIS WORLD.” He believes every human has the God given right to be free as soon as they enter the world and he also believes that this makes them special. This is his driving force behind what he does since the start and he pridefully says it. Not “I’m an ordinary idiot” or “I just wanted to do it, I don’t know why.” He has reasons. The writer forgot why. This is bad alignment and the buildup does not make any sense from season 1 if what you are saying is right. Seeing as how he built up a beautiful story about oppression and ruined it all just by forcing nonsensical romance at the very end which should’ve just been omitted, I am not surprised by the fact that the writer can’t bring back these ideas HE HIMSELF introduced in season 1. He’s made his money and I don’t think he really cares. His writing towards the end is a reflection of that. Stories can have their flaws (which aot does) but it takes effort to mess up a somewhat descent piece of writing this badly. It’s sad and it is what it is. But it’s time for me to move on to other shows.
it's so crazy how isayama turned a story about war and liberation from oppression into a cringey love story and decided to portray Mikasa as "the chosen one".... like what the fuck lmao. Also how come no one mentions Mikasa's ridiculously stupid Azumabito marking crap? That shit seemed so random and pointless.
It was such an amazing buildup. The anime becomes a completely different show when season 4 starts. At the start it was fine as it still focused on oppression. But it literally pulled this stupid “romance” out of no where and made the rumbling and everything a fucking side plot. I’m still asking myself what the fuck happened with the show we started?
Love how that marking got introduced as this cool little mystery, only to go exactly fucking nowhere. Anything to make Mikasa less one-dimensional - if only there were other ways to do that...
It was a cheap way to elevate her to historia status to equalize the erestoria shippers or and erekasa shippers definitely imo and also try to give her like a more important status since she was always just an eren simp and bodyguard
"NOO! I don't want that! Mikasa finding another man!? I want her to think about me and no one else for the rest of her life! Even after I die I want her to be hung up on me for a while! Ten Years at least!!!" "Thank you Eren... for becoming a mass murderer for our sake!" "See you in hell lol! /hug" "Eren.. what a man you are!" I don't see the problem. AoT was a comedy and no one knew, you just got to take it for what it is and laugh! But seriously though, when I read the manga I legit thought someone edited all the lines for the last volume as a prank.
Humans acting like Humans was a theme throughout the show. At the End, people hoped for a godlike messiahs and got a human instead. This is why some people hate Attack on Titan, its actually to real.
@@TheBlackfall234 It's not actually real and no ones was expecting a messiah ending??? Why you ending defenders like to repeat that so much??? It is that it made no sense and that it was contradicting what was previously established in previous episodes starting from eren all of sudden saying he was in love with mikasa when he really didn't and was mostly indifferent towards her. Ymir all of the sudden loving king fring although she attempted to escape various time before. The worm thing came out of nowhere with barely explanation at all of how it came to be other than to give ymir titan powers and that as far as it got. Base on reality, bro this series is not grounded reality. A worm gave ymir her power for god sakes which barely was explored or explained and the origin simply was king fring killed her and then fall on the water and then a worm appeared out of nowhere, revived her and gave her titan powers. Additionally, the thing that ymir needed mikasa to get over eren by seeing her killed him is beyond stupid. A show that did better show reality was the wire. It would have been much more impactful if Armin was forced to fight and kill Eren. If he stood by his own words of those who cannot sacrifice anything, cannot change anything. He would have to sacrifice his friendship with Eren and Eren himself in order to stand by his own beliefs and principals. Also why the f did the rumbling stop when Zeke died???? I thought the royal blood was rendered irrelevant at the point when Eren convinced ymir she was capable of making her own choices and therefore was free to lend her power to whomever she chose. Aka Eren.
Ymir just gave him another chance at life by giving him control of the founding titan and protected him later by spawning the previous 9 titans, but you still need royal blood to start the rumbling thats why he captured zeke just as he transformed
Yeah that entire scene “you’re free Ymir” was retconned entirely and also the fact that Ymir still built titans for the alliance. Also the wall titans should be able to move again and eat people regularly because in S2 the pastor said “don’t let sunlight hit them” implying they could move without being controlled
Yo this is a 100% true. I always thought that for the eren x Mikasa thing to work Mikasa should've chosen to join Eren and Armin would have to sacrifice them BOTH for the sake of humanity, as you said, sacrificing something to get something. I was going to say that the rumbling stopped when zeke died bc he's the connection between eren and ymir but you're, again, a 100% right. If Ymir had decided to do the rumbling why isn't she continuing it on her own? 🤦🏾♀️ there's so much that doesn't make sense, like the worm dying when eren does. It should've been killed on camera and that should've been the end of the titans, not Mikasa kissing eren's head 😂😭 but well... 🧍🏽♀️
The eren loving mikasa thing is definitely a payoff for the shippers and fan service since the author never probably intended for them to fall in love he just squeezed it in a scene.
And by the way, I don't even understand how the shippers can be happy about this Like all they got is mikasa kissing eren severed head while her stalker stares at her (wtf was that shot) and one weird dream sequences where both eren and mikasa get butchered showing that if they ever come clean about their feelings they would have just abandoned their friends to die Like wtf?
@@randomusername3873yeah i don't get how they get happy too. Maybe they get happy because of that dream scene and the kiss scene but apparently mikasa moved on and had another family. So how in hell did they get satisfied with that?
This, this is why I hate this anime/manga story cause of this forceful story writing shit. Mikasa and Eren's relationship is not a love story, it is a sexual mindcontrol fantasy. The same case with Ymir and Fritz. There is no reason for Ymir to fall in love with him nor the proper development tree to follow on with such conclusion.
Eren does love Mikasa you have to remember he see his hole life all in repeating all the time he says it to armen he had to push them away so they would stop him he released what Mikasa has done for him and he wants to be with her but he can't do that if he wants his friends to live on

And somehow it was Mikasa and love conquers all that sets Ymir and Eren free was just so off and out of left field.
Still, if he had such strong feelings for her, and she had strong feelings for him, how the fuck didn’t they have anything? They lived together for years and saw each other everyday. Sure they were soldiers and had busy lives but still, one way or another they were gonna figure it out

It can't age well because if you were to take into account what Feeble King says about how Eren and Armin being pro mass murder and Eren ultimately being allowed a burial despite it being wrong to do so, you'll quickly realize it's just glorifying mass murder and not actually saying that it's wrong.
I feel that opening. After season 3, I would've called it one of my favourite shows ever or even one of the best shows of all time. Like GoT it just sucks when an ending ruins any rewatches.
Sorry you feel that way I love season 4 and I’ve rewatched the show multiple times at this point 🤷🏾♂️ idk how I got recommended this video but I should probably just leave bc I disagree with so many points in these comments 😂😂😂
@@dominickjadoni gave somebody else this long paragraph as well so i might just give you too. You want decent points as to why ending is bad? Here you go. 1. Ymir loved King Fritz. 2. Historia married a guy who apparently threw rocks at her. 3. Eren killed his own mother. 4. Eren doesn't know why he did it. 5. Eren claims to be just an ordinary idiot that contradicts his mother's statement. 6. Where did the worm thing go after eren's death? They didn't even show what happened to it after mikasa killed eren. 7. How come paradis people accepted mikasa and alliance onto the island without any conflict? 8. How did paradis manage to stay in peace for so long, because realistically, it should only take the world 100 years at most to get back on its feet. 9. How did the eren's friends get a happy peaceful life on the island after being traitors to their people? 10. How did mikasa cross an entire continent and ocean with eren's head? 11. Entire survey corps died just so Ymir could witness mikasa kiss eren's head for her glorified therapy. 12. Wasn't Ymir free when she decided to help eren? Why she needs mikasa to free her?
@@earen_zzz The ending was not actually a bad ending. In fact it's a good ending to the series. If you lack the IQ capabilities to foresee the reasons behind the ending then it's not the author's fault that dumb people wouldn't grasp it.
Season 4 was a blatant destruction of the show. Wouldnt be surprised if isayama was paid to ruin it and put their western propaganda into the show. Just look at all our favourite characters be destroyed and then we have characters like gabi as a hero😂
I'm so glad some people are starting to open up their true opinions. This ending is so flawed and so many plot holes that weren't answered and so many characters getting character assassinated. Why did Eren lead Dina Titan to murder his mom when his entire goal was to avenge his mom's death? This is the same guy that said “I’m an idiot”
True. That time travel manipulation story line is so unnecessary. It's like plot twist for the sake of plot twist. Maybe for shock value. But if Eren can manipulate events from the past, there could've been a path that does not lead to violence and death of some of his friends and mom. Stupid story line.
I think Isayama just threw in that “Eren killed his mom” twist at the end for shock value, it makes no sense and adds nothing to the story, all it does is ruin Eren’s character even more.
Eren had to make Dina eat his mom specifically because it happened in the past and pushed things to how they are. It's literally the only way Eren can "see the view" and achieve "freedom". It's a paradox. Think of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the scene where the Gryphon is about to be executed. They only avoid that future because they changed the future, however they're only aware of that future because they warned themselves. Everything happened because Eren Mom died, therefore in the future Eren would have to kill his mom because it's the only way for things to happen the way they did. It's a sort of inevitability. If Eren let his mom live, he wouldn't have the opportunity to let her live in the first place. It's a cause-effect loop that's pretty much a paradox
"Armin liking mass murder isn't a plot twist, it's character assassination" So on point! Author destroyed Eren and Armin's character in the last season. I can rewatch AOT up until they found the sea only. Then all went downhill after that.
You completely missed the point. Armin thanked eren at the end because he showed him the absolute destruction of the planet. He was taking on the burden along with eren so he wouldn't shoulder all the guilt by himself.
@@lazydaze6Even worst. Tolerating mass murderers is NOT Armin's character at all. Armin used to always stand for what's right. He was even guilty that he lived and not Erwin. Author portaying Eren as the victim and part hero here despite killing millions of people is epic failure. Armin always excited as a kid to tell Eren about the outside world, talking about snows and deserts and now thank Eren for basically destroying the planet. Welp. 😂
@@lazydaze6 That's what all say when they ran out of arguments. Attack the person they're talking with statements like "you lack critical thinking skills", "ending is so complex for you to understand". That does not even have substance. 😂 I didn't think Armin was "pro-genocide" and that is exactly the last chapters in the manga and the final parts in the anime assassinated his entire character. Armin never really liked violence and now he thanked Eren for being a mass murderer for their sake? What a garbage writing. It all went downhill when the author decided to introduce the Ymir/paths/time travel manipulation shit/centipede shit like it's a whole different story than S1-S3. Not changing my mind on it.
Finally. A review that isn't just blindly praising the show. Anime watchers are casuals so they mostly just consume product and ask for more product. Most of them are just gushing over how Eren likes Mikasa anyways.
that's so true most of the people who are defending AOT's ending are eren and mikasa shippers and they don't truly follow the story telling of AOT and eren growth.
Uh I liked the ending and didn’t give a shit about if Eren loved Mikasa or not. Everyone I know personally who liked the ending don’t give a flying fuck about the romance. That must be a gen z high schooler thing
Glad that more and more people are being critical of this work. Poor writing should always be scrutinized or it will lead to a regression in the quality of writing and storytelling.
You guys are salty about nothing lol this is a show, nothing real and you all are acting like this was the biggest disgrace in recent human history lol at the end of day i tkink this anime it leaves you with a lesson about how imperfect the work itself is, and that is that Eren couldn't change anything, why? Because humanity is what it is, there will always be one part that wants to destroy the other, it is shown throughout the work with the people of Marley and the subjects of Ymir, and later when in a somewhat ambiguous way we are given to understand that civilization never came to understand each other when they annihilated each other that 20% of the remaining population, what is really valuable is the message it leaves, not so much if the story is eloquent with what Eren wanted, but with what the humanity itself wants, which is to finish each other. Stop behaving like damn anime gurus and start seeing things with eyes more attached to what is a work created based on something born from human history transformed into FICTION. By the way, go out into the real world for a bit and don't scratch your bellies so much arguing and spitting bile over an ANIME.

@@Lumigle Hey, i like it too lol, but its not super amazing and some parts look janky imo, and im not referring to the fight animation, but the background and motion directing as well. There's no denying that the final episode is beautiful but none of that is gonna matter if the writing is good too but it's not. I do indeed agree with you that the pretty visuals are blinding people from the horrible writing of the ending.

Remember, Eren ALREADY freed Ymir in the paths by making understand she doesn't have to be a slave and decide for herself. I guess Isayama forgot about that and had Mikasa free her too.😂
Eren didnt free Ymir there. He made her help him because he saw her as a human not a slave/monster. Mikasa showed her by killing Eren, that what Ymir felt for King Fritz wasnt love as she couldnt let him die.
He freed her to make the choice to help him with the rumbling. But Ymir still loved King fritz as crazy as that was. It was Mikasa's strength mirrored in her willingness to Kill her great love Eren that truly freed Ymir's tortured soul hence why Mikasa tells her to rest in peace and you see the choice Ymir should have taken and she is able to depart truly in peace. I don't think Eren hates Mikasa but he seems like he thinks of her as an annoying sister. He rejected her kiss too during the almost dying together scene. It always was a one sided love Mikasa had Eren should have 100% killed everyone outside of Paradis but Mikasa or Armin ended up dying in the process showing how severely wrong he was. Sir, you have never lied. We would’ve been better off never hearing from Eren again once his head joined with the founder. His explanation for his actions were absurd! The story was very good, but he fumbled the ending. I can definitely rewatch the show. The terrible ending doesn’t ruin it for me.
The way Eren acted towards the end is exactly how anyone in their early twenties(22 years old at max) would have been like in their last moments. Eren was still fundamentally a kid. Seeing the past, present, and future all at once at the same time, while he was actively working towards a timeline with the least amount of destruction so his friends would have a world within t Titans isn't just some minor weight to be carried on your shoulders. Eren acted exactly as any normal person would if they were put in his shoes.
@@silversol8476 my main problem is with him saying “I wanted to see this sight” as his reason for causing the rumbling. That’s just awful. I respected him when he said it was the only way to protect the place he was born. But apparently he didn’t want to protect Paradis. He just wanted to see most of the world flattened because he’s a garden variety idiot being controlled by Ymir who was waiting for Mikasa for mysterious reasons and all of it was predetermined anyway. Nonsense. Still an amazing show, even though the ending is unsatisfactory to me.
@@AnimeAuntiethat reasoning doesnt even make sense when you really think about it. because even if armin hadn’t shown him that book, the colossal titan would have kicked the walls down and gotten his mom killed regardless. tying all of his motivations to armin’s book is just total character assassination and makes him look psychotic. isayama failed because he tried to make his motivations deep and profound, when really its as simple as “the world wants me dead and to revoke my right to freedom.” major fumble
why tf depict the death of 80% of humanity if it serves no point? Why write your characters into corners so that they are forced to kill 80% of humanity? Why make the eldians a metaphor for jews but have them be genetically dangerous to the entire world (wtf are you trying to say with that)? Why make up such a fucked up plot just to explain it with circular time travel reasoning (the whole reason anything happens is because it happens, there is literally no reason). Everything happens because eren wants it but the reason he wants it is because of the shit he experienced but he only experienced it in the first place because he made it happen because he wants it. Wtf??
addendum: i hate how the show keeps depicting all of the yeagerists and eren in the last season. Like the moment the red hair guy (i couldn’t be fucked to remember his name) turns pro global genocide eren yeager nazi i stopped giving any fucks about him but the fucking show will continue to portray him as some sort of sympathetic character. When he fake out dies and then dies again right after (that was so unnecessary and forced just so hange could die btw) all the characters are sad about it as if he isn’t the guy trying to kill the entire world. Same with eren like how the fuck does the show drag out the decision to kill bro soooo fucking long. I lost any investment in any character at that point because they still wouldn’t want to kill eren although the entirety of humanity is at stake like how am i supposed to get along with that. Why the fuck make killing hitler so fucking difficult of a choice??!! All the meandering and second guessing in the last leg of the show once the rumbling had already started was so fucking tone deaf i couldn’t believe it. Also how is the plot legitimately that 80% of everybody died? Like why make the characters successfully stop eren after literally everyone is dead and then end on that note?? Wtf?? this story is crossing into all sorts of fucked up territory but doesn’t give it any weight. Global genocide doesn’t even seem that bad at the end and the story just moves on as if it was chill.
addendum 2: the issue with the ending (honestly all of the last season) is that because of the way the plot is entirely reliant on mystery and revelations the ending manages to ruin all that came before it. You can’t really enjoy all of the first 3 seasons with hindsight because none of it means anything by the end. All the buildup is for fucked up and stupid bs and can’t have any impact therefore. And it’s not just the ending that is bs, the whole lore is bs. As i said in the original comment, why tf are the eldians actually dangerous in lore? The story borrows very heavily from holocaust imagery and is not at all subtil about it but the lore doesn’t match it at all. This shit isn’t at all a metaphor for racism and oppression and if its trying to be than its all the way fucked up. The idea that your metaphor jewish people of your world are a threat to the rest of humanity and are genetically distinct and on top of that have a past of oppressing and mass murdering all other people is unbelievably fucked up. Don’t fucking play with such heavy history like that just for your edgy torture porn story. All the conflict in the whole story is contrived from the lore and not built on the mechanics of real world conflict and therefore completely fails to comment on any of it. You cant write a story about the horrors of oppression if you also make it canon that the oppressors oppress for a legitimate reason and make it so morally ambiguous and make race genetically determined when it is a social construct created to justify racism in reality. The story doesn’t allow any character or nation accountability for anything that happens ever because its always forced by plot and lore and just makes it a miserable doomer edgelord fantasy where everything happens because it had to (and it had to for no reason). This story cant mean anything because of how it contrives all of its conflict from how the world is written and has nothing to do with reality. Like none of the conflict mirrors any real world conflict in any sense but it uses all the imagery so that you think its deep but in reality its just tasteless.
@@Spantzcatdog I wish i could see it as just a crappy sequel but honestly shit starts going sideways towards the end of season 3 already imo. The first thing that really threw me off was erwin sacrificing the entire squad including all the new kids and levi asking him to do it. @@Spantzcatdog addendum to the reply: i think the show strongly peaked in the entire return to shiganchina ark for me because of how the show builds up to it and how it connects to the basement and because of how it manages to shock with how desperate the situation gets although the show has done that already repeatedly at that point. But as i said the basement reveal is where it goes bad for me (i think without later context it hits strong and the twist is insane but the twists actual contents are already really fucked up)
Such a strange ending, the whole show was about freedom and liberation, and Ymir did represent that theme so perfectly. She breaks free from Fritz because she sees Eren's will for freedom. It was so unnecessary to change it into a lame romance plot?? It worked perfectly fine without it.
There is multiple meanings to freedom. America is considered a free society by some but not all just like how some Americans view other countries as "not free" while it's citizens beg to differ. The theme of freedom in AOT refers to two kinds. One is Eren's perception of freedom, which is to see the world, explore the world, and to live as a human. This is what most people generally consider freedom, at least by law. The other form of freedom is a freedom of yourself independent of your NATURE. This is what Eren ultimately is a slave to. Ymir found herself a slave to both and while Eren showed her to seek freedom, Mikasa showed her how to "break out of her programming". Just like how Eren cannot choose his nature of chasing HIS perception of freedom, Ymir cannot stop her nature of loving King Fritz, just like Mikasa cannot stop herself loving Eren. While Eren fails to break out of his programming, and just kept moving forward despite knowing it's wrong, Mikasa does the opposite and kills the man he loves. These two acts "free" Ymir from the shackles she placed on herself.
@@newframe6937 if mikasa showed her how to break out her programming, she would have done so in trost arc in s1, when mikasa moved on from erens death, and vowed to protect her people and kill titans. she didnt. therefore the mikasa ymir thing i nonsense and only makes sense to people who forgot the rest of the show. ymir loved king fritz.....bro. what is wrong with you. pls, im begging you, think about WHAT he did, WHY he did it, HOW she reacted, and try and justfiy said statement. and dont spout stockholm syndrome if you dont know what it is. it requires the abuser the demonstrate some love for the abused and create attachment, fritz does not.
@@pyrite2060 Because moving on from Eren dying does not conflict with her desires at all. Killing Eren with her own hands is a different thing entirely and with Mikasa showing Ymir that it's possible, Ymir was able to break free.

I’m sorry but as someone who loves romance stories, Eremika makes little to no sense. Please tell me when the hell did Eren show ROMANTIC INTEREST in Mikasa? Of course, Eren cares about her and wants to protect her because she’s his friend and adoptive sister. I’d expect that from him. I was literally about to comment this. This guy is a ray of sanity in a world of bots. He’s willing to go against what the masses say in order to say the actual truth. Totk and aot finale were my biggest hopes for 2023, absolute let down failures, but because of their popularity, nobody will say it… apart from feeble. Real ninja
The main thing that bugged me about the ending was character motivations being an absolute mess. Main cast trying to “save the world” is already stupid given the circumstances of you know, the whole world wanting them dead but it’s even dumber when they decide to be buddy-buddy with the Marleyan cast who have killed people they love. Then there’s Eren’s “plan” which culminates in him getting killed by his friends thereby securing world peace (?)…..after killing 80% of its population? And I guess he couldn’t see far ahead into the future to see the home he loves so much is going to get carpet bombed in a century or so in a retaliatory strike? Or maybe he knew this and went ahead with it anyway? Makes no sense. If the silver lining of the whole story is supposed to be “war never changes” then I can’t help but feel that the people praising this story for its “heavy” and “complex” themes are either very young or just are very easily amused. Part of me thinks Isayama added the epilogue ending as a smart way of vindicating the Yeagerist position since what characters like Floch said eventually came to be true and the utopian position is dumb.
You need to rewatch it because you clearly missed a lot to not understand things this badly. Eren saw into the future, he manipulated the timeline and created a paradox to create the best possible timeline. His friends lived, they did not get carpet bombed. The point was after all of that conflict still existed which is why Eren was distraught. He saved his friends but he didnt save humanity because humanity will continue to find reasons to kill each other.
5:02 THANK YOU. Eren was not pro-genocide, he hated that it appeared to be his only option. He took every opportunity he could to resolve things peacefully and only when all options failed, and Mikasa didn't take the opportunity to confess her feelings and run away, did he commit to the Rumbling. And this fucking finale he goes "I dunno, I just wanted to do it, so very badly." 😔😔😩
I find it interessting, that all the: Its great you don't understand it deal with it people never have any arguments. My opinion is not an argument. What you write is an argument that everything Eren does in the end (and he doesn't even know why he says himself) goes against his beliefs and also the basic theme: In the end all fate is future unchangeable (although there is a God who controls time so in principle infinity is infinite and infinity is just infinity ask the typing Shakespearian monkey). And the basic themes: Freedom through sacrifice to never give up are trampled underfoot (hahahaha). I think the author had a story of a few chapters in mind (he says so himself). As a short story without all the long substructure etc, it could have fitted. A quick story about how a "nuclear bomb victim" gets the bomb himself and kills everyone else. But Eren's character was built up differently throughout the story (how he tears himself apart every time someone he loves dies because of him and suddenly he doesn't care what happens to them after his death because he can only "see" until he dies).... So also the "argument" Eren did it so "safe friends future" is wrong because he doesn't know what happens after his death. Code geas is a perfect Counterexample: (Spoilers ahead): Zero "lives" in the End als Warning: If you are a dictator enslave people it doesn't matter who you are, how much power you have: I will bring you down. Future "safed" with sacrifice.
Eren is absolutely completely pro genocide. He was not crying because genocide was the only option. He knows there are other ways. The rumbling was the most sure fire way to achieve HIS own personal freedom and his friend's freedom. He does not care for anyone else inside the walls (Paradis Eldians died during the activation of the rumbling as stated by Armin). He does not care for anyone outside the walls. We know this because with his discussion with Reiner in the Marley, Eren calls back to how Reiner invaded Paradis. Reiner exclaims that it wasnt because anyone told him to or that he was brainwashed by Marley that he killed Eren's mother, it was because Reiner HIMSELF wanted to do it. Eren then tells him that they are the same, that even though Eren knows the rumbling is wrong, even though he knows there are other ways, he commits genocide because thats what he wanted to do. Did he do it so that his friends can achieve peace and happiness? Yes he did. But just like how Reiner claims that he's doing for his mom, its only the surface level reason why. The biggest reason, the main reason, the deepest most obvious reason is because Eren wanted to do it.
Thank youuu @@newframe6937, I hate that people are trying to turn Eren into this tragic hero, when his whole build up, up to this point, was to activate the rumbling to achieve his selfish goals.
@@newframe6937 the thing is, the failure of Isayama and this ending is the inability to explain why Eren wanted to do it. You bring up Reiner and his dialogue with Eren in Marley, but we can explain why Reiner wanted to attack the walls and complete the mission. He wanted to be a hero, he wanted to make his mom proud, he wanted whatever modicum of respect an Eldian in this world can get from people. That was the carrot, at least. The stick is that if he failed that mission, he'd be replaced by another Warrior candidate and his family would likely become mindless Titans like Grisha's gang. Why does Eren want this? You've already said he doesn't care about the people outside or inside of Paradis, so I guess we just ignore his speech at the end of From You, 2000 Years Ago. Why did Eren do it? Because reality is not like a picture book he saw as a child? Because he's insane? Because he's a madman? An idiot? A slave to freedom? 🤦🏾♂️ See, at least ending haters are consistent. Attack On Titan has been the greatest Fuck Around & Find Out story. The outside world fucked around, KNOWING that Paradis could unleash the Rumbling, and as a result, found out. There was no need to humiliate and discredit your protagonist. Go back and watch From You, 2000 Years Ago. People who like this ending and think Eren just wanted to do it all forget what Eren says to his people.
I'm a huge fan of AOT , and I do agree with most of these points, especially about Eren and Ymir. But I don't think Armins character was assassinated. I believe Armin is against genocide even during the conversation with Eren, But Armin has always been every empathetic and understanding. So when Eren told Armin that he killed his mother (which is stupid af.)You could see Armin switch when he realised how strongly Eren felt about genocide and saving his friends that he would do that. Since there's literally nothing Armin can do, I think he just makes peace with his life long friend realising what stupid horrendous shit Eren put himself for his friends. (We've also seen Armin lie before.. alot!) But yeah I didn't want to face it.. but the ending is bad.
Yea that's exactly how I interpreted Armin's behavior there. The only thing I didn't like is how they tried to add a silver lining to their inevitable condemnation by saying "well at least we'll be together." The stuff that I don't get at all is Ymir. Why would she want to kill anybody? I see no explanation anywhere in the show for that.
I think Isayama got way too carried away, he could have used the help of an editor. The fact that Eren gained the power to control all titans at all times and yet still made one eat his mother...he could have prevented so much death from happening back in the first few seasons, and if he had the same thoughts he did 4 years after, the loudmouth Eren would definitely not have been a character, since he knew about his powers right from the beginning since he was a child so there would not be any reason for Eren to be so worked up as opposed to relaxed and kinda laissez faire like he is in season 4. When you introduce time travel into the mix, shit is going to get so jumbled, I would have been fine with Eren only reading the thoughts of all past Attack Titans, just like Eren and Grisha did, him influencing every other Titan in the past and present makes Eren seem like the biggest loser for not coming up with a better solution. Also, wow Mikasa is one of the worst characters of all time. Somehow her killing Eren made Titan powers vanish, but why? If Ymir wanted Mikasa to kill Eren she should have made it easier for her, and if she actually wanted to kill all mankind then why stop? Ymir was apparently the God but she actually was a slave and then she found a comrade but then actually she did all of it for Mikasa? Awful. Amd if she wasn't bound to the king lineage anymore killing Zeke would mean jack shit, ehy would the Rumbling stop if Zeke has no value? And Eren's conversation with Armin was kinda awful, you talk about it a good amount so I don't have much to add there. The very end also makes kinda no sense, why does the tree reappear, it makes everything Eren did kinda worthless in the long run. Sure wars happening that is part of human nature I get it but the Ymir story again? I thought Mikasa killed Ymir forever and the centipede thing vanished or was it an illusion that it vanished? If it had the powers of illusion why not use them to get back to Eren's head when Mikasa cut it? Contrived as hell
The life worm is a master of evolution. Thr main big worm died, yes. But eren still had traces of the worm in his severed head, im talking microscopic traces in the nervous system. Those traces clung to life. They mutated that fucking tree. And it will become stronger than before because that is how evolution works. During the scene of the battle, you can see a dog titan running along with the other past titans. It's possible either the kid or the dog will get mutated at the end, or perhaps even both and the mutation will be a fucking werewolf or some shit. Who knows? This is fiction. Anything is possible.
Dina-bertholdt twist creates so many plotholes... It was unnecessary af: dina should have eaten carla just because she happened to be there and bert just hid in time as we thought pre-time skip. It wouldn't have been a plot hole either as it needed no explanation. Until post-time skip there was no mystery about it, this subplot was clear to us But isayama decided (why?) to ruin it by adding that panel with bert first and then revealing everything at the last moment when it didn't matter anymore as it had little time to be explained and have us feel at least some kind of emotion. And now, after such a stupid twist, we have dozens of plotholes cuz eren turns out to be someone who could have: - solved so many issues in this story, - saved so many people: his family, comrades, friends etc. - predicted the future and actions of everyone, - finished everything much earlier, even before being born, - let dina eat bertold, led grisha to her after taking the founder away and made touch his ex-wife to start the rumbling, for instance, - used the ability to control titans through time and space multiple times and so on But no, "I'm gonna use it only once, to kill the person I love the most in this world and ruin my entire motivation, let dina avoid bertholdt, my enemy even though it could help the island a lot, blame reiner for my mother's death for no reason and also ask myself what my mom would think about the rumbling while being the reason why she can't say anything now. However, I can't make my colossal titans leave hange, my friend, alone in PRESENT because this story has to have more drama" Genius!
Just think about it: Isayama managed to create a silent character, with ZERO dialogue and ZERO monologue but still explore her backstory, struggles, suffering, mystery around her motivation, set such amazing parallels between her, the mc, historia, freckled Ymir, zeke and frieda only through her emotions and actions, symbolism and visuals, he connected it with aot's themes and its lore. He managed to write THIS... so she, ymir fritz, got to be destroyed by 3 gd lines ("only Ymir knows...", "ymir loved the king fritz" and "she was waiting for mikasa") Just... why? WTH? FOR WHAT? Where do I begin? Well, her love for the king... Firstly, no way it's Stockholm syndrome cuz this shit works differently. You guys read about it yourselves. So, no. Secondly, WHEN did she start to develop feelings for him? Before freeing the pigs? After their marriage? After getting pregnant? When? Thirdly, WHY does she have affection for her husband? He ruined her life in every way, he abused her physically and mentally, he did the same thing to their children but she... Uh, ok, let's see (as if we could). If she loves him, why does she disobey him by freeing the pigs and not regenerating? Why doesn't she smile or isn't happy when he's around? Why does she want him dead instead of her and regrets not letting fritz die? If she regretted this whole time, doesn't it mean she already put herself and her daughters above her husband so the titan curse could end sooner? Now, ymir and mikasa... Their connection has NO buildup. It's never hinted at something common between these two throughout the entire show. The Ackerman's headaches had no allusion to the goddess. So why mikasa? What about this woman made fritz choose her? The fact she was an Ackerman? Or the person who was able to kill the love of her life? Um, couldn't ymir find someone else, like, sooner, 282 years ago for example, among millions of people, within 2000 years? Or it's because mika killed the founder when it separated from hallucigenia? Who knows, who cares... Why even show so many well-written parallels between ymir fritz, eren, historia and freckled ymir if they have no payoff? Why does Ymir find herself in mikasa but not historia whom she has much more in common with? Historia is a better version of her, so why not wait for reiss? For what reason does she pick a girl with no dignity, self-respect and ability to move on or grow up? How are her relationship with fritz and eremika bond even similar? Eren didn't treat mikasa the way fritz treated his wife. Eren saved and freed mikasa, that tyrant enslaved and and turned his woman's life into a nightmare. The mc and the king are complete OPPOSITES just like mika and ymir. What would she do if mikasa suddenly changed her mind and didn't kill eren? Wait for 2000 years for someone again? How can mikasa help her move on from the king if ackerman didn't move on from eren herself? Next, if Ymir was the one to make titans in the paths, who made her titan? Was the hallucigenia a separate organism or was it connected to fritz after giving her titan powers? If it wasn't connected to her, then why did it disappear instead of trying to find a new holder? Why was it trying to find one at first but vanished after Eren's death? So the founder's death affects it? Then the hallucigenia should have died when Ymir died. But they're not connected, are they? Or the opposite? Ugh... Why did the founder split into 9 titans? Why not 6 or 27 or 3 if she had 3 daughters? If maria, rosa and shina were able to get their mom's power at the same time, does that mean both erwin and armin could eat berthold and become shifters together? How did fritz know about the way of passing titan powers to new holders? Was Ymir dead when he fed her to their daughters? If she wasn't, then her power should have been given to a newborn eldian. If she was, then she allowed the king chip her into pieces and saw her daughters eat her? If she can rewrite her people's dna, that means she can lenthen their lifetime or make them invulnerable or immortal? Can she provide them with armor appearing out of their bodies or weapon out of the air? Or stop them from turning into titans? About the paths... I refuse to talk about how they work. I would take one more paragraph Additionally, whose side is Ymir throughout the story on? On fritz's, who planned to build Eldian empire? Or on Zeke's and Karl's who wished to end this empire's existence and wanted her descendants to die? Or on Eren's who tried to save some of them? Is she with mikasa who stopped eren from doing it? Or is she with the alliance who did everything in their power to to save the rest of humanity on the continent? Or is she on the royal family's side? WHOM does she obey? Or is it just going with the flow of events? If that's the case, then how can she wait for mikasa? But if it's still for witnessing mikasa murdering eren, then why does she listen to zeke when eren enters the paths? By this logic, she should join the mc immediately to see him get killed as soon as possible. What were those scenes with her watching everyone during the rumbling all about? Why does she join eren at first and starts the rumbling with the boy but then helps the alliance to defeat him? Why would she do that to someone who made her moved to tears for the first time after 2000 years of suffering? Who healed her by his words of kindness, who told her she's just a person, not a slave or a god, that she get to decide and choose? Why are we told in the final mikasa saved her if eren already did that? Did she need help two times? If the mc wasn't the one to free her, how could she disobey zeke? Is eren her liberator or pawn? If a liberator, why didn't she tell him what she wanted or write shit on sand, anything? If a pawn, why make a show "at your service, mr zeke" and weep after Eren's speech? Also, what exactly made titans disappear? Eren's death, his refusal to live, mikasa's choice, the fact hallucigenia separated from the mc, the fact fritz saw the kiss? What? Ymir's desire to stop? So you mean to tell me she wanted them to exist? She could refuse making them anytime? Why did she smile at the end of ch 138? Because eren got killed or because the goddess saw the kiss? To think that for more than 100000+- years (if we take into account time in the paths moves slower) she created MILLIONS of titans when shifters transformed and when eldians turned into them (dozens times a day), healed her descendants (once again, dozens times a day), changed or erased their memories, rewrote their dna, made shit from crystals, walked millions of kilometers to build titans, carried many-many pails with water and sand, climbed high to make enormous arms, heads, necks etc... for TWO THOUSAND YEARS she made her children and their children suffer, made the world endure, helped the mc start GENOCIDE, watched millions of people die and kill each other, witnessed her people eat one another and so on just because she COULDN'T MOVE ON FROM HER ABUSER! What else should I say... Either she is the stupidest human being or the most despicable and evil person ever. Either her plotline is retconned, or the author just didn't think it out properly (which is so unlikely). Maybe, just maybe, she was the true villain of the story all along, not a victim as we thought. We were just ignorant to see it or didn't want to notice. TMM, Ymir's character gained the worst conclusion in aot, even worse than eren because we didn't even get to know about her motivation, it remained a mystery because "only she knows...". Her arc was so unresolved and so underdeveloped. What was Isayama even thinking?
Thing is, GoT's ending was a show-only, so its not really G.R.R.M's vision, whatever the fuck that is. Meanwhile, AoT is 100% Isayama behind the wheel.
@@Alaa-gv6ks He has admitted that he wrote himself into a dead-end and now has problems progressing the story further the way he wants. That's a thousand times better than ignoring plot holes and rushing towards a horrible ending.
I binged watched this show over the last couple of weeks and today I saw the ending. I thought maybe I was being too harsh because absolutely nothing made sense. Also, death was so easy to find on the earlier seasons and now every character had the thickest plot armor. I wish I could unsee the last episode.
It seems writers would rather create a shitty ending that people get emotional about for just that reason than risk it being just unremarkable. I had to watch it happen to several shows I otherwise loved. The only solution to give oneself peace of mind is to just disregard the finale and device a better one.
@@lilcarljohnson2527 but he dose have a point tho, the majority of people who like the ending of AOT just like it because of the eren and mikasa shipping and not the story telling.
@@partypha I did not get into the details of the story telling, I just pointed out a toxic behaviour. I also found a lot of the writing in this ending to be lackluster. The love Ymir had for Fritz is never touched upon until Eren and Armin's conversation and could only be explained by the Stockholm syndrome (even though it's still not a suitable explanation imo). I saw Eren's emotional breakdown as a consequence of the burden that the Founding titan's power was taking on his mind and him not wanting to die is completely normal and human (he never was a God, just had the power of one), but the fact that he wants Mikasa to love him for the rest of her life is actually laughable. One point I disagree on is Armin's character, I mean he never said that he WANTED to eliminate humanity, but that at some point he FELT like it was a possibility yet he never said he wanted to go on with taht plan. As you can see I agree with many points in the video but I still don't call people who liked the ending IDIOTS, that's a strong word my friend.
@@partypha- The story telling was great. AoT is probably top 3 anime of all time. Extremely well done foreshadowing. Ymir while people don’t agree is a plot device, use whatever head canon you want with her.
@@lilcarljohnson2527 I stand by my words. Anyone calling this a masterpiece is in-fact an idiot. So many things wrong you would actually have to be stupid to praise it like that. I think that insult is warranted. Actions have consequences and some people just are not smart. They can relate to Eren they should be happy 😂
I never understand how ge kills 80% of the world but the rumbling stops at Marley which is the closest land mass. Doesnt make sense even if there were other titans going to logn way
The Marley continent is the size of Africa (well it pretty much is Africa) so it’s ginormous. Nearly the entire continent of Marley has been stomped flat by the end of the rumbling, so the big battle happened on what little bit of land Marley had left.
@@PickledKong64 First of all Eren suffered more than anyone because of the outside world. He only attacked Marley right after Willy Tybur made the whole world declare war on them. When the Marleyans attacked Eren only had few choices as the only real weapon against Marley the people of Paradis had was the rumbling. If Eren didnt start the rumbling Marley would have annihilated Paradis killing Eren and everyone he cares about. Also more than likely Marley would have used the power of the founding titan to take over the world, so basically not resisting wasnt a choice. A small scale rumbling would not bring the people of Paradis freedom as well, as the remaining countries of the world would hate them even more and theyd fight a war Paradis cant win. Eren picked the ending which wouldnt kill everyone outside Paradis and still guarantee freedom for his friends till at least the end of their lives (although Eren couldnt control everything for example Hange dying). Maybe one could say if Eren took their titan powers and completed the rumbling there would be eternal peace, but season 4 was proof that the people inside Paradis could fight each other too. Worth mentioning is also that saving his friends was not Erens only motivation. He wanted to rid the world of titans like he promised in season 1. Furthermore his (understandable) hate towards what the outside world has done to him and his confusion due to being able to travel between times as well as the power of the founding titan played a big role in his final decision to start the rumbling. I hope that wasnt too long for you, Id appreciate it if you tell me your POV 👍
It's nice to see a fellow anime only who understands THIS ENDING IS HORSESHIT. How are so many people defending this? What?! The story after the rumbling falls off, and then suddenly nosedives with the last part. I genuinely have no idea what went on in the background to produce this, and I genuinely cannot understand the people who defend this shit. Your patrick bateman joke was hilarious btw, and incredibly spot on. It's hilarious how Isayama suddenly decided to shoehorn in a shitty MCU "good guy vs evil yay" ending into a story that was fundamentally amoral by the end, and have it end up being pro genocide. The one thing I disagree with you, is that you believe Eren was saying his true feelings at the table scene. I thought he wanted to push them away so they wouldn't feel bad when he enacted the rumbling. I think it would make sense that he would do that, and it would be cool for Historia to be the only character he opens up to. What I THINK is he exaggerated his true feelings (he didn't like MIkasa's creepy obsessiveness, and Armin being suddenly attracted to annie)
No, the story falls off after the big S3 reveal of a functioning human world outside the walls. Half of the things in S4 happen offscreen, and we are just supposed to take it at face value. We get no insights to any of the important characters, other than reiner. Reiner, however, is then kept alive even after his character arc has been completed. Annie was simply irrelevant to the story at that point, other than just being muscles. Pieck and Jean simply exist because they exist. The big plot twist in the paths was good only because of its shock value, not because it had any sort of buildup to it. We never knew what was going on in Eren's mind up until the final chapter. This is all just poor and lazy writing. My theory is that Isayama simply lost the motivation, or was too tired keeping up with monthly releases and just wanted to end the story as fast as he could. Hence, he decided to rush things.
great and true analysis. it sucks, and only those with bad taste cant see that. it's a pretentious and convoluted mess that makes the entire rest of the series in vain.

Exactly. Murder his mom? I feel like the author completely forgot how Eren almost died saving his mom in that Titan attack. I hate how the author destroyed Eren's character.
The whole final fight is stupid when you remember the fact that Eren is basically an omnipotent god and sees the past present and future and can take awya their powers or make them paraplyzed at anytime.

The amount of people who called aot "the best anime ever" or just even "one of the greatest" and eren "the best character ever" is astonishing, like damn one of my favorites anime is re zero and yet i know it's not perfect and that subaru isn't the best character. Some people need to learn about liking something and yet criticizing it cause aot isn't perfect at all
I think a good bulk of people who carry on like that have probably just not watched or read a lot of stuff and this is their first piece of media that they’re a fan of which deals with heavier themes. It reminds me of when I was 12 and watched Fight Club for the first time and thought it was the best written movie ever.
Each to their own, personally, 'Attack on Titan' gets a thumbs up as the best anime ever, at least for me (aside from "Dragon Ball'). I can say the same thing; my all-time favorite anime has to be 'Dragon Ball,' even though I know it has a bunch of filler episodes and cool fights. But you see the point: "Dragon Ball' is not even in the top spot generally for people, but to me it's still my favorite. To you it could be the worse anime but not to the people and vice versa
I'm sure there are many things about breaking bad that could be broken down and questioned why certain things have happened even in breaking bad if anyone really cared enough. There are discussions about plot holes for any show on the internet@@Raouftali-wi6ym
There are a lot of plot holes with the titan abilities. They didn't consider what Erens powers could do with literal clairvoyant future and past sight + the ability to manipulate people through time. Eren breaking character as if he has been the same person from the start doesn't make sense. Eren did change. You can't tell me Eren was acting this entire time. Eren & Mikasa love interest didn't make sense at all. They were like brother sister to me.
Eren controlling Dina creates an impossible time paradox. That and the question I immediately had was, “If Eren could control titans from the future why didn’t he activate the rumbling before his mom died?
@@justsomeguy6336 I gues Isayama wanted to go the route of determinism. It does not matter what character progression Eren went, he only had one path. Yeah, the premise of the show that Ymir is simping over King Fritz is stupid. It should have been something to do with the will of the parasite wanting to wipe out humanity to redeem it's own species. I think "character assassination" was also a big problem with the ending of Game of Thrones.
Only if they had added one line that expressed: This is the best path I can see where my friend lives. That would have solved entire controversy. Its like Dr. Strange talking about the possibilities of future given choices of present and past. But even when they didn't mention it, it's obvious by the way they presented entire Eren's arc, like he was crying in front of that child cuz he was gonna kill them but he didn't have better choice. The reason it's not obvious to some people is because he told Armyn that he didn't know why he did it. Considering relativity, this show is indeed a masterpiece.
Is it? Or did Ymir create the power system with it? What if "Titans" is just one way for the parasite to form power and it depends on the user? What if it's not a parasite but the god of a void world 300 light years away from earth nurturing on death and conflict and wanting the world to die? It does make sense considering the deaths it caused!

aot season 1 to 3 captured the sense of humanities battling a hellish world that's relentless in trying to kill them, amazingly. however, barring the cool speech here and there, the dialogue was exposition and dramatic irony filled garbage, with characters speaking plot points to each other rather to naturally speaking. but the overall sense of strive for survival and freedom against this hellish nightmare, unsettling and uncanny horror, and helplessness, was top notch. sure the mystery of titans were kinda obvious but the protagonist hanging to the hope of something that could save them, being in eren's basement, was engaging. then season 4 came in with everyone's favorite stuff: an incorporation of a 14 year old idea of geopolitics, TWISTZ that'd make the m night shyamalan proud, time-space bs, and of course "i did all these bad stuff out of love and wanting to goof. im really just a misunderstood nice guy, you guys" plot point, aka the thanos™.
it's funny how i've never even heard an argument from someone who praises the ending. Always just: You just don't understand, you're too stupid. Just try to understand it. Man, you not only delivered with TOTKs utter DLC let down, but you also have come again with AoTs fanfic ending. You are a legend man, the unthinking bots will 10/10 these to high hell, but it’s nice to know we still have some people willing to critique these entertainments. What’s funny here too is you just touched the surface of how BAD this ending was. How was Mikasa’s memories able to be “manipulated” if she was an Ackermann? This ending means Eren lying in his own thoughts when he walks the street of Marley after abandoning the scouts? Like, wtf? What Grisha “saw” was the sea of red blood, that’s what motivated him to give Eren the founder? What??? How did Eren transform into the colossal when both Zeke had been eliminated and the worm was detached from him? Why was Historia represented as the clear and obvious parallel of Ymir, all the scenes of her reading with her sister, only for her to be sidelined in the very end? Why was Eren’s Rumbling speech about not leaving Paradis’ fate to “chance”, then literally leaving Paradis’ fate to chance???😂 Why did NOBODY get anything more than a scratch from the final battle? How did Mikasa know Eren was in the mouth? How did Mikasa walk across the OCEAN??? Why was Zeke necessary to wipe out if Ymir had already broken free from the curse and achieved her own will, which is how she even gave Eren the power to start the rumbling in the first place? If the ending was about “talking” and how Eren was an idiot for not doing so, why was Levi made to chop Zeke? Why couldn’t THEY have talked? Where was all this stuff about Mikasa Ymir being tied together BEFORE the very final episode?

Eren "I fight until 80 percent of my enemies are dead" Yeager.
---------------------------
It's crazy how it takes one short conversation to make armin go from risking his life to prevent genocide to supporting it.

Also, if Eren can time travel to control titans like the one that killed his mom, then wasnt Eren invincible the entire series?
This is an excerpt from a recent interview with Isayama:
There’s a much-talked-about scene where Armin, who is struggling with Eren’s turn into a mass murderer, seems to thank him for his actions.

Eren saying “I just wanted to” was hilariously bad 😂
I mean that is one of the major reason why he did it. After everything he's been through and his own belief on freedom, of course he would want to do it. It's like Reiner when he continued the attack on the Eldians even though he knew they weren't devil, at their core it's for their own selfish reasons.
@@Azurald55 Great observation
This inevitably leads to his idiotic decision of the Rumbling, which is also what I believe he meant by when he said "Cz I'm an idiot."
My main problem with the ending mostly comes with Ymir and Mikasa like that was just kinda dumb to me lol
Just to please the eren and mikasa shippers lmaoo
It was such an amazing buildup. The anime becomes a completely different show when season 4 starts. At the start it was fine as it still focused on oppression. But it literally pulled this stupid “romance” out of no where and made the rumbling and everything a fucking side plot. I’m still asking myself what the fuck happened with the show we started?
Love how that marking got introduced as this cool little mystery, only to go exactly fucking nowhere.
Anything to make Mikasa less one-dimensional - if only there were other ways to do that...
I think it can only be understood under the pretext of Iseyama being a complete doomer and rather misanthropic.

@@TheBlackfall234 It's not actually real and no ones was expecting a messiah ending??? Why you ending defenders like to repeat that so much??? @3:24 I don't think Eren ever disliked Mikasa. When he did treat her with disdain, it was no worse or different than a brother getting annoyed at their sister. But Eren never saw Mikasa romantically in any way, I think that much most people would agree with until like the last 30 minutes of the anime.

I'm a huge fan and can't understand how others can't (or perhaps don't want to) see the problems with the ending on a logical and emotional level.
It's not even about the ending itself, but about the "why".
Compared to the whole, simply outstanding series, this ending seems like it was written by a beginner and never reviewed by an editor.
When a part of a story is so controversially discussed and dissected in order to somehow gain sovereignty of interpretation, it should be clear that the story has a problem at this point.
It's what happen to casual fans: they always trying to ignore the cold hard truth and just stay on the happier time they had before.......just like One Piece situation : The gear 5 is absolutely bullshyt which people claim that OP suppose to be comedy which they already forgot how awesome the scene of Akainu killing Ace before was. For AOT case, it's the worst as a bad ending can literally destroy the whole series as you watching the whole series just to get this kind of nonsense result......rewardless.... wasting time...... Based on the advancement of the story itself, there are tons of ways to produce a much better tragic ending for this series, yet Isayama purposely choose to use the lease favorite way to end it.....if you think that this is probably the best ending that can possibly happened, well good for you.
As for me : clearly there are way too many possible way to end it flawlessly. To see such a great series ending this way is really sad...as it was supposed to one of the greatest of all time.

I wouldn't call his choice the least favourite way. I think he made some interesting creative decisions and there's a lot we can analyze and take from them. I don't think it was the best possible ending, but it was good and tied up a lot of things in the story. Only part I didn't like is where Eren kills his mom.
I'd like to hear you offer some of the better alternative endings you think were possible and I think I can point out why they aren't necessarily better or even worse.
Anime onlies are hype beasts tbh. As long as the majority of the series is competent, the ending doesn't really matter as long as it's emotionally resonant on a surface level.

And I really hated the production too to be honest, it was too convoluted & messy! Like a 5 year old with ADHD put it together. And the dialogues didn't help as they came out of nowhere. 1. If he thinks genocide is bad then he should have let his nation be taken controlled of or possibly destroyed which would save at least 99% of the world's population compared to the true ending.

Yeah time travel is dumb, thanks southpark
Are kidding me? You guys don't even get this part? No wonder you think the ending sucks.

why tf depict the death of 80% of humanity if it serves no point?
@looy._. Season 4 damaged AoT, not just ending. This series ended at Season 3. Season 4 was nothing but crappy sequel.
@@Spantzcatdog I wish i could see it as just a crappy sequel but honestly shit starts going sideways towards the end of season 3 already imo. The basement reveal is where it gets extremely suspect and the note it ends on with erens question at the end is already pretty bad imo. The first thing that really threw me off was erwin sacrificing the entire squad including all the new kids and levi asking him to do it. It’s also paradoxically my favorite scene for its genuinely deep shock and for how much it pushes the fucked up nature of the show while still giving it proper weight. With whats to come tho it’s a red flag.
@@newframe6937 I like this explanation everything makes a lot of sense to me now
Not true. Ymir was freed at the end of the story. By Eren, Mikasa & Armin together.
Fuck the cringelliance. Fuck the retcons. Fuck everybody. AoT ended when Eren bulldozed the fuck out of the cringevengers and went back home to live his life with his wife Historia and their child in the countryside, after appointing King Floch to the throne. Period.

I am an anime only , I hate the ending
AOT has that Game of Thrones feel great start highly controversial ending.
Don't listen to these aot riders that refuse to acknowledge bad writing and what is being told vs what was being shown in the show seriously i don't understand the hoops these fans go through defending such a garbage ending for erens character
Season 4 was not good
It took 10 years of waiting for the ending and a lot of time reading and re-reading the manga to analyze the intricacies of the story. I've wasted my life for this shit too
@CharliHavic"Eren is human"
Everyone knew that already. The only bot here is you regurgitating the same sh*.
Go back to your toy box 🎁
@CharliHavicYES one scene ruined everything. Eren killing his mom, Armin thanking Eren for genocide, Eren suddenly conffesing that he loves mikasa even tho there was no romance indicating to it throughout the entire series and Eren literally fucking killing 80% of the world just for a view? Are u fucking kidding me? Please dont even try and defend the ending especially when its dogshit. Also Eren said he wont leave it upto chance but at the end he left it upto chance Lmao this ending is just shit overall.

Ok, In all seriousness, wonderful analysis my guy.
i hated the ending more than anything, heck i hated the entirety of everything after the time skip, but i don't get why people suddenly hate mikasa and wanna push the stupid the narrative that eren hated her since day one (although season 2 episode 11 and 12 explicitly shows eren caring for mikasa) leaving this cringy shit aside lets talk about time skip attack on titan
GUYS DID YOU KNOW THAT MIKASA IS A JAPANESE PRINCESS😳 ALTHOUGH THAT SHIT NEVER CONTRIBUTED A DIME TO THE STORY
GUYS DID YOU SEE HOW EREN CHANGED INTO SOME MYSTERIOUS EPIC EDGY GUY THAT WANNA DESTROY EVERYTHING CAUSE FREEDOM AND STUFF 🤯 NOPE NEVER MIND HE DOES NOT KNOW WHY HE DID IT 😪
GUYS THE SURVEY CORPS DECIDED TO ALLY THEMSELVES WITH THE FORCES THAT WERE INVADING THEIR HOMELAND MOMENTS AGO CAUSE THEY WANNA SAVE THE WORLD AND STUFF😱
GUYS IT'S AMAZING HOW THE FOUNDER YMIR LOVED THE DUDE THAT RAPED THE SHIT OUT OF HER AND ABUSED HER HER WHOLE LIFE, AND IT TURNS OUT THE WHOLE FUCKING STORY WAS BECAUSE OF HER STOCKHOLM SYNDROME 🥵
GUYS IT TURNS OUT THAT EREN CONTROLLED EVERYTHING IN PATHS EVEN HIS MOM DEATH AKA HIS MAIN MOTIVATION TO FIGHT THE TITANS, SHOCK FACTOR AMIRITE LOL LOL🤓
this brain dead story telling was not seen before the time skip, (the uprising arc had a vibe similar to that but no one gave a fuck cause that arc was short and sweet) imo the series quality receded radically the moment iseyama (cvck) decided to shoehorn politics and wacky time travel shenanigans that ruined the MC and FMC's for a stupid loli's sake
funny thing is that the ending defenders try to call out the people who didn't like it by saying stuff like " you just want a happy ending", lol like annie and reiner getting redeemed although they did terrible things to paradis and the scouts isn't disney-tier writing
it's funny when people compare the zero requiem to this forced rushed trash that made 90 something chapters obsolete
snk ended (spiritually) the moment they went to the beach
Anything can sound stupid by describing it this reductively.
Also, Reiner and Annie were not "redeemed" at any point, especially not when they literally call themselves irredeemable in the exact same arc.
@@dextoppable tf you mean they didn’t get redemption, Annie is with armin happily ever after and reiner gets to live with his family without the burden of being the armored titan

@@dextoppable yeah a happy ending is getting redeemed, in terms of fiction norms that is, also isn't fort salta a marley military base ?
my problem is that the message is just so forgettable. you mean to tell me after all this time, the best takeaway isayama could come up with is “war will always exist?” its like no duh. im getting sick of anime just being nihilistic for the sake of being nihilistic. its starting to become a cliche.
Yeah so ur left imagining that eren bought them freedom for maybe 100ys or so, and then what? That's it, that was the master plan? Doesn't seem like much of a success if he could see the future and all...
@@TheNotoriousNemo his motives are so dumb. okay so eren wants to be free from titan oppression and protect the island so he starts the rumbling. but wait theres more than that, he wants to rumble the world because of armin’s book, and he also cares about his friends and wants them to be happy. but in order to do that they have to kill him and end his freedom. but wait eren doesnt even know if they’ll even survive his onslaught. not to mention he purposely tried to make his two best friends hate him so they would pursue him no matter what! so sad! oh and eren has to kill his mom to motivate him to hate titans, even though he was always born that way in his own words! but WAIT its all like TOTALLY WORTH IT BECAUSE ymir can finally break free from the curse of love and mikasa can get over eren!! even if the island gets destroyed!!!! I don't hate nor dislike it as much as other people. There are some of my favourites in the series. But still I respect the legacy of the series.
based berserk fan. aots cynical nihilistic mesage will never compare to the message of hope and fighting against fate berserk gives us
@@theswagman1263facts. The problem is that aot did a bait and switch. The story was NEVER ever ever a nihilistic message. It was about “being born into this world” “if somebody oppressed you, fight back, how strong they are does not matter” “when we are born, all of us are free” “if somebody ever tries to take my freedom, I won’t hesitate to take theirs”
Isayama just capitulated to the fanfic shippers in the end. He wasn’t headstrong enough to write what he truly believed in: fighting against oppression for freedom and winning.
I liked the finale but I understood all the points you said… good video
I’m sorry but as someone who loves romance stories, Eremika makes little to no sense.
Please tell me when the hell did Eren show ROMANTIC INTEREST in Mikasa? Of course, Eren cares about her and wants to protect her because she’s his friend and adoptive sister. I’d expect that from him. But we don’t see him growing a deeper connection or a possibility of him having romantic feelings until the end. It’s not “subtle” it’s bad writing.
Now you have the VAs trying to cover this shit up because they know people don’t believe it. The only ones that do are hardcore shippers.
I’m just sick and tired of seeing this stupid trope. Guy character ignores women characters feelings and advances until it’s too late/ very end of story. It’s lazy and shit writing. No outside source will change that because it never shows WITHIN the manga or anime. 🙄
I also hate how Eren’s character is butchered and force to center on Mikasa. He doesn’t kill the world for freedom. No, it’s because of Mikasa. What shit writing is this
After the tears of the kingdom video, you have once again made another spot on take despite what others might think. Appreciate your ability to not be blinded by media’s honeymoon phase that so many are.
Floch was right.
Yep
See, at least ending haters are consistent.
(We've also seen Armin lie before.. alot!)
But yeah I didn't want to face it.. but the ending is bad.
Yea that's exactly how I interpreted Armin's behavior there. The only thing I didn't like is how they tried to add a silver lining to their inevitable condemnation by saying "well at least we'll be together."
The stuff that I don't get at all is Ymir.
“But you don’t understand” -aot sheep
The life worm is a master of evolution. Thr main big worm died, yes. But eren still had traces of the worm in his severed head, im talking microscopic traces in the nervous system. Those traces clung to life. They mutated that fucking tree. And it will become stronger than before because that is how evolution works. During the scene of the battle, you can see a dog titan running along with the other past titans. It's possible either the kid or the dog will get mutated at the end, or perhaps even both and the mutation will be a fucking werewolf or some shit. Who knows? This is fiction. Anything is possible.
Woosh
Dina-bertholdt twist creates so many plotholes...
It was unnecessary af: dina should have eaten carla just because she happened to be there and bert just hid in time as we thought pre-time skip. It wouldn't have been a plot hole either as it needed no explanation. Until post-time skip there was no mystery about it, this subplot was clear to us
But isayama decided (why?) to ruin it by adding that panel with bert first and then revealing everything at the last moment when it didn't matter anymore as it had little time to be explained and have us feel at least some kind of emotion. And now, after such a stupid twist, we have dozens of plotholes cuz eren turns out to be someone who could have:
- solved so many issues in this story,
- saved so many people: his family, comrades, friends etc.
- predicted the future and actions of everyone,
- finished everything much earlier, even before being born,
- let dina eat bertold, led grisha to her after taking the founder away and made touch his ex-wife to start the rumbling, for instance,
- used the ability to control titans through time and space multiple times and so on
But no, "I'm gonna use it only once, to kill the person I love the most in this world and ruin my entire motivation, let dina avoid bertholdt, my enemy even though it could help the island a lot, blame reiner for my mother's death for no reason and also ask myself what my mom would think about the rumbling while being the reason why she can't say anything now. However, I can't make my colossal titans leave hange, my friend, alone in PRESENT because this story has to have more drama"
Genius!
He managed to write THIS... so she, ymir fritz, got to be destroyed by 3 gd lines ("only Ymir knows...", "ymir loved the king fritz" and "she was waiting for mikasa")
Just... why? WTH?
I would take one more paragraph
Additionally, whose side is Ymir throughout the story on?
Finally someone said it!

Thing is, GoT's ending was a show-only, so its not really G.R.R.M's vision, whatever the fuck that is. Meanwhile, AoT is 100% Isayama behind the wheel.
Thing is, his vision is taking a lot of time to finish that book i wonder why @@Modeus.
Nowhere close. GOT has extreme good character writing aot doesn't compare. Aot is good at mystery and shock value. Berserk compares to GOT.
AoT ended at chapter 123 or 21st episode of 4th season.
Anything else is awful lie.
@@Spantzcatdog What do you think went wrong with the Marley Arc?
@@Spantzcatdog oh sorry, I missread that xD
I agree 100%
I googled this right after finishing the anime because I thought I was the only one going crazy about the poor writing.
The ending was so terrible. Thank you for this video I am going crazy seeing all these idiots call this terrible writing a masterpiece
bro, only bc someone liked the ending and u didn't doesn't mean they're idiots, show some respect to people's opinion
WOMP FUCKING WOMP
Based video. Was in love with this story until the ending😒
I never understand how ge kills 80% of the world but the rumbling stops at Marley which is the closest land mass. Doesnt make sense even if there were other titans going to logn way
It didnt stop at marley. Marley was the first continent to be destroyed.
Marley has won much territory against other nations. The final scene is at a military outpost I think.
@@emx8989 aren't those people equally oppressed then? I don't get the whole argument of eren being justified
I hope that wasnt too long for you, Id appreciate it if you tell me your POV
👍
Couldn't agree more. Was reading manga since 2013 only to get this ending. After all these years it really broke me.
Dina-bertholdt twist creates so many plotholes...
It was unnecessary af: dina should have eaten carla just because she happened to be there and berth just hid in time as we thought pre-time skip. It wouldn't have been a plot hole either as it needed no explanation. Until post-time skip there was no mystery about it, this subplot already had payoff
But isayama decided (why?) to ruin it by adding that panel with berth first and then revealing everything at the last moment when it didn't matter anymore as it had little time to be explained and have us feel at least some kind of emotion. And now, after such a stupid twist, we have dozens of inconsistencies cuz eren turns out to be someone who could have:
- solved so many issues in this story,
- saved so many people: his family, comrades, friends etc.
- predicted the future and actions of everyone,
- finished everything much earlier, even before being born,
- let dina eat bertold, led grisha to her after taking the founder away and made touch his ex-wife to start the rumbling, for instance,
- used the ability to control titans through time and space multiple times and so on
But no, "I'm gonna use it only once, to kill the person I love the most in this world and ruin my entire motivation, let dina avoid bertholdt, my enemy, in past, even though it could help the island a lot, blame reiner for my mother's death and also ask myself what my mom would think about the rumbling while being the reason why she can't say anything now. However, I can't make my colossal titans leave hange, my friend, alone in PRESENT because this story should have more drama"
Genius!
Completely agree! It was an unecessary plot twist just for shocking the audience
The entire series is a giant time-loop paradox. And because the Attack Titan can see the future there’s no free will.
@@justsomeguy6336 it doesn't save the story from plotholes
@@annett5 I know.

@@StumbIingforward corny cope plot device. Theyre intruding on his own freedom by trying to stop him. The amount of people who called aot "the best anime ever" or just even "one of the greatest" and eren "the best character ever" is astonishing, like damn one of my favorites anime is re zero and yet i know it's not perfect and that subaru isn't the best character. Some people need to learn about liking something and yet criticizing it cause aot isn't perfect at all
there is no perfect show anyways. Arguing about this stuff is pointless

It’s genuinely dizzying thinking about how bad this ending is. Just nihilistic wallowing that makes fan fiction look like fucking Shakespeare
nihilistic wallowing is such a gross misrepresentation of the message LOL
Yeah they really make shit as an ending.
Honestly in my opinion, the existence of the parasite doesn't need to be explained since it's the one that started the power system of the show.
Is it?
Or did Ymir create the power system with it? What if "Titans" is just one way for the parasite to form power and it depends on the user?
What if it's not a parasite but the god of a void world 300 light years away from earth nurturing on death and conflict and wanting the world to die?

aot season 1 to 3 captured the sense of humanities battling a hellish world that's relentless in trying to kill them, amazingly. however, barring the cool speech here and there, the dialogue was exposition and dramatic irony filled garbage, with characters speaking plot points to each other rather to naturally speaking. but the overall sense of strive for survival and freedom against this hellish nightmare, unsettling and uncanny horror, and helplessness, was top notch. sure the mystery of titans were kinda obvious but the protagonist hanging to the hope of something that could save them, being in eren's basement, was engaging.
