- 10 Amazing Tape Measuring Tips. The tape measure is possibly the most important tool in anyone’s toolbox. People can get quite precious when it comes to their tape measure because it is so important. One thing you need to remember when buying a tape measure is that tape measures come in metric as well as imperial so purchase one that has the measuring system that you are familiar with.
These days, tape measures are made in all shapes and sizes depending on your requirements. Generally the tape is more robust for use on building sites and a little less robust for the weekend DIY’er. My recommendation is to buy the best tape measure that you can afford.
Cheaper ones generally have a tape blade that bends quite easily so your reach isn’t as good and the spring inside is also generally weaker causing retracting issues which can be really annoying.
The higher-end tapes are much stronger, the blade is thicker and wider meaning that you can get really good reach, they have a strong blade retracting spring and they don’t break when dropped from a height. So like l said, if you can afford a slightly more expensive tape measure, buy it.

I have to admit I use your first demo (seeing how far I can hold a tape out before it bends) as my test for which tape measure to buy, forget waiting til I get home! But I have NEVAH used it as a walkie-talkie :-D
Thanks for the tips - my ex showed my half of those (so I'd be useful help), but I didn't know how to use it to draw a circle! And I'm forever dropping things off a ladder and I invested in some magnets recently for other things, so that was an awesome tip. Cheers from Newfoundland!

Good stuff Shane mate. For that bend in tape when measuring an inside corner, have a look at matey measure. It's a cheap enough gadget that you just wallop onto your tape. I thought it was worth abpunt, and it's done me no wrong 👍

It also works well for pretending it is a light saber that slowly retracts back into the handle when turned off. Only works on turning off mode though. 🙂
