  • Had a damaged hydraulic cylinder on my Valmet 505 that needed reparation because it was leaking.
    Filed down the tops, and filled the grooves with chemical metal.

    I know the machine shop has already been mentioned, but I myself own a welding/fabrication/machine shop and I also suggest finding a local machine shop to help you fix the cylinder. Next time you have trouble with the cylinder go talk to a machinist. Just ask them to make you a new rod. The rod is pretty inexpensive and comes already chromed so all the machine shop has to do is cut the threads on the end and they will be finished. No more than one hour labor for sure. Anyhow, I really enjoy your videos! And I wish you the best for 2020! Dan P @6-4 Fab Glen Rock Pennsylvania USA.

      No history of those kind of people down here. (Old timers like that with own little shop.)

      Ah so you can buy a chromed rod, Good idea will keep that in mind for the next time I need one.

    Absolutt en forbedring. Den va jo ødelagt før du begynte, å du fikk den jo passeli tett. Å no har du jo prøvd å fikse den en gang, så da bi du å få d t neste gang.
    Takk førr nok en underholdanes video.

    Definetely an improvement. It was already broken before you started fixing it, and you sealed it some. And now when you've tried fixing it once, it'll be perfect the next time you try.
    Thank you for yet another entertaining video.

    If there is a hydraulic cylinder repair shop in town they will probably already have a piece of piston rod left over from the repair of a longer cylinder. Get a piece with the threads already cut in it and cut it to length and weld your clevis on yourself. Many times you'll find what you need in the recycle bin. With the amount of Marine activity in your harbor there have got to be quite a number of sources for seals etc. All the hydraulic shops here in Dallas Texas buy their seals from a local distributor who can match anything you bring them. Its a whole lot cheaper than trying to buy a "kit" from a dealer.

    • @MiniMachines1
      @MiniMachines1  4 роки тому

      Our town is pretty small so we don't have many speacial shops, it's more that one does a lot but don't keep a stock of a lot of stuff since it's money on a shelf. So for hydraulic rams I need to ship it away ore order it in. I guess if I flip the seal that I installed the wrong way this one will work for many years 😀

    You can always go to a good "svarvare" (swedish word for it) metalshop or what ever its called in english and have a new piston rod made.
    I bent the rod that drives the bucket on an excavator many years ago and then I did that and they made a new rod and welded the old parts on the new rod. Was no cost at all compared to by a completely new rod from the dealer.
    What you did works to but if you want to get it done in the future its just a tip :)

    • @MiniMachines1
      @MiniMachines1  4 роки тому

      It's possible but here I have no shop for chroming the rod so need to ship it away than and the price is probably more than a new one in the end. But thanks for the tip 🙂

      @@MiniMachines1 What we did was get a chromed rod i the correct diamater, then cut it to length, thread it in one end with the "svarv" and then weld the connection that we cut from the bent rod to the other end.
      Looking att the welds from yours it looks like that might have been done once already in the past.
      I have a backhoe with a cut in the rod, im going to try this fix with chemical metal on that.

    Is something on the tractor binding the travel of the cylinder enough to bend the rod? If something gets between the cylinder and the transmission it will bend things as it goes thru its cycle.

    • @MiniMachines1

      No the rod is not bent, I guess the earlier owner have had something attached that have scraped the rod... But just guessing.

    I really enjoy your videos. At 21:00, the lip of the blue pressure seal in the gland should be facing down toward the piston (toward the pressure side). I believe you put it in facing upward toward the dust seal. It will have to be taken out and turned over, or it will leak.

    2:10 I see fresh paint on that tiltrotator, did u fix it ?
    18:00 when i was fixing some small cylinder, i noticed when i use same tool as you, the seal has stretched.. So i started to use zip tie, and i put seals to hot water, they are getting more plastic to work with.. I talked to an employee at hydraulic shop, he told me they use special size tool for smaller seals and another tool for bigger seals.
    Another thing is, u can buy chromed rod, they'll sell you the long piece you need, but somebody has to make a thread on it anyway.. In case of your cylinder, it got smashed pretty good. On my backhoe was a cylinder rod in bad shape, but not that bad ;d

    • @MiniMachines1
      @MiniMachines1  4 роки тому

      No that was from the same time I made the last video about the tiltrotator, so no progress there yet. Never tried with hot water but will do next time 👍 yes it was bad but it's still working good after the fix so hopefully it lasts the rest of the year 😊

  • @justinfufun5483
    @justinfufun5483 4 роки тому +1

    Interesting. I would have put the seal in hot water to make it more flexible before using the insertion tool.
    I had a 2 metre ram made, piston rod tube barrel end cap plus 2 feeds seals, mounting brackets testing and certification all for €700. So I can only imagine it would cost you under €200 to have that short rod replaced with a new one... Even if you had to post it to Ireland or UK to get it done.

      Not in Norway 🙄 and that is the other thing here is really expensive to ship out of the country 😕 I didn't get the price on a new one, the shop told me to try this first 😅 so I guess it's not cheap than.

    I have a cylinder on my scraper that creeps down but that is because the tube interior surface has a bunch of rust cavities in it. No amount of honing will smooth that up. The only solution there is have a new cylinder tube made or buy a cheap replacement. I'll use it until it bothers enough to do something about.

    • @MiniMachines1
      @MiniMachines1  4 роки тому

      Ouch that was an worse problem, I see that here in Norway the universal new ones like I bought for the homemade tiltrotator is cheap, but when you get an special made one for one machine they get expensive.
