Russell does a great job of demonstrating and explaining how to use Skype to screen share with a student. This is a way for a teacher to share any document, video or presentation with a student.
Russell Stannard (Teacher Training Videos) our bosses ordered us to all use Skype so students all have a similar experience- these are adults at the UN. Luckily my classes are small but some French teachers are finding it difficult. We are sharing our experiences in two weeks so I’ll give your advice as we may continue for the next term. Yes, with big groups it is a problem and I think it depends on the device they use to connect too. Have you thought of trying Zoom www.teachertrainingvideos.com/Zoom
Russell Stannard (Teacher Training Videos) First of all thank very very much for take of your time to answer. Yes I started using ZOOM this week and it definitely has some advantages. Even though I like the simplicity of skype and the video quality on my windows 10 hp, I have found some very interesting features using zoom. Zoom actually has good monthly offers too. I'd like Microsoft upgrades Skype to add some new features. Everything to promote social distancing with my friends. Thank you very much again. I really appreciate it.
Quick question: Does Skype have a way for teachers/students to share annotation/writing capabilities like in zoom? I’m going to be tutoring for a company that uses Skype as its preferred platform, and I’m familiarizing myself (since I’m new to it) with its attributes and limitations so that I can plan accordingly. Also, your video has been the most helpful one I’ve viewed thus far! (Thank you for it!)
No, as far as I know Tammy the answer is no, SKYPE is a bit tricky, I use it for some of my private lessons but I have to admit I prefer SKYPE..thank you for the really kind comment too Tammy. I need to update that SKYPE video actually.
Russell, thank you for the explanation. One Q: when you/me share screen and bring some slide or other info screen ON, I still want to see my contact in the small video window. How do I do that? As of now sometimes I see it, sometimes not 😍 🤣

Big disadvantage of screen sharing is that your students can't see your face anymore. Why not use a tool such as OBS in combination with Skype? It's very suitable to prepare presentations and use several types of media.
@@ttvRussell I have been using OBS in combination with Skype and Voicemeeter for 4 years to chat with my little daughter. It offers so many additional possibilities in comparison to just using Skype. One can use several camera's (e.g. one for a book, one for my face), One can watch Netflix or other streaming content together. One can browse through websites or watch local content together. Using PNG graphics one can design custom borders, pointers and any other graphics, which one wishes to move around or (un)cover. It also has several gaming possibilities. Moreover, you can record browser screens, which helps me to collect and prepare interesting content for my daughter. 5 years ago I started with a program called ManyCam, which seemed like a good offer. Though, it is very buggy, time consuming (one has to convert each graphic to their format) and cpu intensive. OBS didn't look as user friendly in the beginning, but once I learned to discover the powerfull possibilities of the program, I became a fan. It's steady and robust. Once I started using OBS, I noticed that the sound of my voice did not sync with the content, which was playing. This is because Skype gives priority to voice audio above system audio (content audio). In order to overcome this, I installed Voicemeeter, an audiomixer, which overruns the system audio and creates 'virtual audio cables'. In other words, Voicemeeter makes it possible to combine all audio and send them as one mix to Skype microphone input. For recording the sessions I have been using a program called Evaer. This program does have dedicated developers, who effortlessly update the program, each time Skype does, but the program is unpredictable and does not always record properly (timing, audio, video). If you know a good program to record Skype chats, please let me know. Cheers!
Hi Sunday. Skype does not allow this, like Zoom does: However, in Skype for Business bit.ly/2yeIpzb you can use a whiteboard tool. If you want a separate whiteboard tool, Microsoft Whiteboard works well with Skype, but you start screen sharing and use that as a separate tool. For annotations, I think Zoom is better. ua-cam.com/video/h4wu1CYEIRo/v-deo.html
I understand what you did;however, I have a newer version of Macbook Pro than you do(?) and when I tried screen share a moment ago what your video said would happen did not. I was sent home from the training to figure out how to open screen share and close it , and how to do the same on Zoom which I do not anticipate being a problem. I wonder how a person does this if that do not have someone to call? I suppose I will call my phone and see what happens
You do need to call someone to do screen share. It will be nothing to do with your Macbook. You may have a newer version of SKYPE than when I made that recording. If you call something, so you have someone to screen share with, it would all be clear. Sorry the video didn't help you
'When you screen share in Skype, you need to minimise the Skype window, so that the other person sees the web pages that you have open. In this example I show a PowerPoint window, but it doesn't matter, as long as you minimise Skype. You can, of course, also share a link to those specific web pages in the chat window on Skype. Hope that helps. Russell.' Thanks for the reply but unfortunately it doesn't help much :-). I was already minimizing my window and can share powerpoint and microsoft word documents but I don't have the option to share from the internet for some reason. Students can see the internet as part of my whole screen share but I can't just share that like my teacher can from her PC. Thanks anyway.
Hi. I am teaching a tarot class and need to see my students screen and both of our faces....Is there a simple way to do this? Thanks so much. Really helpful video.
That is difficult. I don't think you can do that in SKYPE as it stands but you could do that in Zoom. You can share the screen and share up to 5 people's faces at the same time.
@@ttvRussell Yes! True! I've started my online teaching today and this video really helped me a lot!! Ive been using skype before but never ever knew about screen sharing

Thank you so much for this video. Now I feel confident about using the screen share option with my students. I used to screen record the audio clippings because usually the transcription and answers are there at the end of the video which I don’t want my students to see immediately. This way I can just play the video and stop it wherever I want and the student can see and listen with the help of this option. Thank you. Will it be easier to store files in OneNote in order to share the documents with my students?
Hi I'm a teaching coach and I work with teachers to help them improve their practice. At the moment we are looking for a way to help them remember to be careful what they share in video meetings, as we've had a few issues. Don't suppose you have a light-hearted video showing that do you?
Hi! Can you please tell me what can be done when the other person I'm trying to share my screen with just can' t see my screen? She can hear what I'm screensharing, but she can't see my screen.
I think you might not be doing it correctly. Remember you must choose the window you want to share and then choose share and then you need to minimize skype so that they can see what is on your screen and not see what is on your skype.
Difficult to know, Paula, what's going wrong in your situation. There are options in Skype - settings - for audio - it might be to do with the microphone input - whether using a headset or not. Do check in the audio set up in Skype before making your call. Watch this part of another tutorial on using Skype about phoning someone: ua-cam.com/video/tQpltHBztB0/v-deo.html
Hi Russell, thank you so much for a very clear, well explained and useful video especially as I'm not very tech savvy. Is it possible to screen share and still see the person I am video calling?
Hi Russell, Thanks for your videos, I have just started teaching online and I find them very helpful! I just wanted to ask, is there a way to share just a portion of the screen? Say just a window and not the whole thing? Thanks again for the very informative videos!
When you screen share, you do get various options to share just one tab or just one window but you can't share a portion of a window. You can't actually do that with any of the webinar tools

I cannot share my sound i do not get the little switch to share the sound everything else works fine . when i play a short cd i can hear it but the other person cannot .can you please help .
You need to share your computer sound when you screen share. I think the button is called share systems audio or share computer sound. Screen sharing shares the sound but not the audio.
@@ttvRussell yes , as I tried the other night ,it worked! To make it possible, my contact needs to drag my profile pic which is on the upper right so I can be seen while I am sharing screen. :)
I have a comment, I have been using Skype and screen share how it possible to see like student when share picture and student can see a bigger image of your cam still. I'm so frustrated about this i would expect it to be possible just don't know how.
I guess it means you might not be doing it correctly. When you screen share, you must minimize the skype window so that the students don't see you but see what is on your screen.
Thanks for the clear explanation! I tried it today on my first online training. How do you go about the students making a small assignment while skyping. Because holding it to the camera shows it in mirrorview...bit of an issue There.

I can screen share, share documents etc but I can't share my web sites that I have open on screen. My teacher who I did a trial with could share google with me that she had open on her PC. I am using a mac and the web pages that I had open were not visible in the choices of sharing whereas in Zoom they are. Cheers!
Thanks for the amazing video! I will like to know how to write on screen while sharing it
@@ttvRussell Thanks for the prompt quick, very useful!
Oh sorry that it didn't help. I'm not sure what the solution is in that case.
Thank you. This was helpful!
Dee, I am really glad I could help you.
Thank you so much, this is a big thing for teachers like me who doesn't have a lot of techy stuff on mah braincells heehehhehe
Thanks, Yengster. Most of my videos are aimed at those who want to use something but aren't always the most tech savvy. R
@@ttvRussell Yes! True! I've started my online teaching today and this video really helped me a lot!! Ive been using skype before but never ever knew about screen sharing
Dear Russell, What camera are you using? The quality is good! my Asus laptop's camera is not good. Is there any chance to use my cell phone camera with my laptop?
Gisselle, sorry for slow reply. I was away on holiday. My camera is this one

Hi. thank you...do you know if there is a shortcut for this function ?
No idea. I just pres the screen share button.
Best one iIve seen yet
Thank you Danny. I am glad I was able to help you.
Yes, sharing content on OneNote is a good idea. It will work well.
Hello, thanks for the video! Can I let them write or do some thing on my screen while I'm screen sharing?
I don't think that is possible in Skype. It would be possible in Zoom
THank you!
Really glad that my videos are helpful. I have some new stuff coming out very soon.
Hi I'm a teaching coach and I work with teachers to help them improve their practice. At the moment we are looking for a way to help them remember to be careful what they share in video meetings, as we've had a few issues. Don't suppose you have a light-hearted video showing that do you?
Helen, I don't but you are right it is important. Never have anything open on your screen that you don't want people to see if the golden rule
Hi...thxs for Zoom lesson. I am using Skype and would like student to see video and hear it...sees it but doesn't hear it...what to do?
Difficult to know, Paula, what's going wrong in your situation. There are options in Skype - settings - for audio - it might be to do with the microphone input - whether using a headset or not. Do check in the audio set up in Skype before making your call. Watch this part of another tutorial on using Skype about phoning someone: ua-cam.com/video/tQpltHBztB0/v-deo.html
Hi Russell, thank you so much for a very clear, well explained and useful video especially as I'm not very tech savvy. Is it possible to screen share and still see the person I am video calling?
No, not really. You can do that in Zoom, which is also free for 1 to 1 sessions but not with SKYPE.
@@ttvRussell Thanks for your reply Russell, I didn't word my question very well, but thanks for your answer, I know what I need to know now!!
Superb, many thanks. I am an art teacher, i want to share my demo video and my face talking to them on the screen. How to connect mobile to system n show them both my face n the live art demo simultaneously. Most online tutors do, i wonder how they do. Kindly help, it matters alot to me. Thanks again. kindly help.
Archana, I am not so sure you can do that with SKYPE. You are probably seeing presentations using other tools like Zoom etc.
@@ttvRussell Yes, they are doing on UA-cam, because I saw those videos in youtube. Kindly help how to do on youtube or any platform. My students were asking me for art classes since this lockdown, n because I am not techie person I couldn't take classes online in this lockdown period. Students still asking me. Now I took courage to try to attempt on zoom. But if I can show them live n my talking face while explaining how am doing, at same time with multiple windows. Kindly post video on this, how to do on youtube or any platform. will be great, of you, many thanks for reply.
great video thank you
Hazim. glad to help you.
What I need to know is how you recorded the video
I'm using Camtasia. Here is my Camtasia course:ua-cam.com/play/PLqYj2sOxDkVwgVrOdhpmUc-oOAUiyyzbk.html
Hi Russell! Thanks for sharing this video. One question is it possible that my contact can still see me while I share screen? How do I do that?
I am honestly not sure. I think they can. I use it for my Polish classes and when I share I can still see my teacher. So I guess it is possible.
@@ttvRussell yes , as I tried the other night ,it worked! To make it possible, my contact needs to drag my profile pic which is on the upper right so I can be seen while I am sharing screen. :)
God Bless You :))
I am glad I could help you. Thank you for the lovely comment.
Good question Cindy, just refresh the page and the Edmodo with update. You need to refresh Edmodo to see the latest contributions. Cindy, another tool that works well with SKYPE is Padlet.
Russell Stannard (Teacher Training Videos) cool! Will look into that today! Tnx for the advice!
Hi. Thanks for posting. QUESTION How can I see the 2 screens large inthe same times. Also canI attach the view of a secondary camera for demonstrations. (I am a painter) Thank you
I am not sure you can screen share two screens in SKYPE. You can only screen share one as far as I know.
Ya I too have same doubt.

When I share my screen, the person who I share my screen with can't read words well. I have to zoom in my Word or PDF document on my screen for the person to be able to read my document. Why is it so?
Could you go full screen, Pavel? Have they got theirs full screen? You have found a workaround, by zooming in. Or maybe share / send the document with them via Skype? R
@@ttvRussellThank you so much for your videos! I'm having a sound problem when I share my screen and want to share a video with my students. I click on share sound before sharing the video as required, but the sound is too low, not only for me, but for the other person hearing it too, sometimes no sound. As soon as I'm off Skype, the sound in the same video is perfect, as it was before I even shared it. My sound settings seem to be ok, but not sure. How can I resolve this? Thanks. Should I change anything on my settings?
Is there a way to prevent your viewers' capability to screenshot or video record from happening? I want to protect my material.
Diego, in reality the answer is no. There are now too many ways they can do it.
Also tell me is there any restriction of number of hours per day? Per month?
I think SKYPE can be used all the time. I don't think there is any restriction
I can screen share, share documents etc but I can't share my web sites that I have open on screen. My teacher who I did a trial with could share google with me that she had open on her PC. I am using a mac and the web pages that I had open were not visible in the choices of sharing whereas in Zoom they are. I managed to show her the web pages but in a different way that meant she could still see other things on my screen. Any idea how I can directly share the web pages that I have open? Thanks in advance
When you screen share in Skype, you need to minimise the Skype window, so that the other person sees the web pages that you have open. In this example I show a PowerPoint window, but it doesn't matter, as long as you minimise Skype. You can, of course, also share a link to those specific web pages in the chat window on Skype.
