You are right.Even if you dont ever use it in a playing situation, for interval practise alone those exercises certainly worth the time.If you get to the point where you can see the intervals "on the fly" when you are soloing...you wont have to rely on fixed boxed in patterns. You just wanna know the formula of a scale or a chord and you build them instantly.
I could nt help noticing how effortless your left hand looks; pretty similar to a classical player s . I consider myself taking the easy way out by choosing symmetric scales for displacement Such as chromatic, whole tone, etc.. I can see the shapes so much better and pretty consistent on the fingerboard. Also I try displacing every other note and sometimes every 2 or 3 notes. I enjoy playing patterns that sound like wide intervals but when analyzed , they are simply ascending or descending scales. For example a descending whole tone scale such as C Bb Ab Gb E D C I would play C(5th string), Bb (3rd) Ab(1st) , Gb(4th) , E(2nd) and keeping the same shape starting on D(5th) Moving throughout the whole neck.. thanks for sharing!!
