The Ford Mustang GTD will Beat the Porsche GT2 RS and GT3 RS Around the Nurburgring

And this wouldn't be the first time a Mustang beat a track focused Porsche around a race track. In Fact there's a mass produced ford mustang that smashed numerous lap times of one of Porsche's most popular track cars, and I'm talking about the 2016 Mustang Shelby GT350, and the 2016 Cayman GT4.On the 8 tracks shown here, the Mustang beat the GT4 on 5 of them.
And what about the nurburgring you ask. The 2016 Cayman GT4 had a fastest lap of 7 minutes and 40 seconds. The Mustang GT350R did it in 7 minutes and 32 seconds, it wasn't even close. But for some reason, this never became major automotive news.
Now when you hear the word motorsport, Ford is typically not the first company that comes to mind, but when Ford sets it's sights on victory, it sometimes wins, I don't need to remind you of all the times that Ford beat Ferrari at Le Mans, but you may have forgotten that Ford brought the GT back to le mans in 2016 and won the LM GTE Pro class, and beat numerous porsches and ferraris in the process.
So here's how the Mustang GTD and GT2 RS stack up against each other on paper.
So the GTDs got the GT2 beat in horsepower and suspension, and surprisingly, the GTD only weighs 27 pounds more than the GT2
When competing on a track like the nurburgring, that's got a lot of tight turns and elevation changes, suspension becomes even more important, and the GTD has cutting edge suspension that utilizes Multimatic’s DSSV motorized spool valve dampers, competition coilover springs, and a pushrod-actuated rear end that's part of the tubular subframe chassis.
The GTD also has a much more advanced aerodynamics package, featuring hydraulically controlled front flaps, a carbon fibre underbody and an active rear wing.
But another area that the GTD has a huge advantage over the GT2 is the chassis. Because the GT2 is a roadcar that has been modified for the track, but the GTD is a racecar that's been modified to be street legal
In order to beat the GT2 RS around the nurburgring, Ford has to beat 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds, but Ford doesn't just want to beat the GT2 RS around the nurburgring, it also wants to beat the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series, which has a lap time of 6 minutes and 43.6 seconds, over 3 seconds faster than the GT2 RS. And just for measure, the 992 GT3 RS lapped the nurburgring in 6 minutes and 49.3 seconds, exactly 2 seconds slower than the GT2 RS, and the current Nurburgring champion is the Mercedes AMG 1, at 6 minutes and 30 seconds.
But the main reason that the GTD will beat the GT2 around the nurburgring, is that time marches on and supercar technology advances very quickly, and while we all know and love the GT2 RS for the track beast that it is, that car is now 7 years old, and there have been significant advances in suspension and aerodynamics since then, and the Mustang GTD is a brand new car that features state of the art suspension and aerodynamics, and it just has way too many advantages over the older GT2 RS.
Ford started testing the GTD at the Nurburgring about two weeks ago, and so far they haven't been pushing the car to it's limits, which tells us they're still getting it dialed in. We can expect a couple more weeks of testing, and then Ford will make the official laptime announcement time at their leisure, manufactures often let this announcement drag on so the hype can build, but hopefully Ford will let us know sooner than later.

GTD has a lot going for it. Pretty advanced engine, loads of torque through the midrange, 50 50 weight distribution, lightweight, wide track, wide sticky rubber and the fastest stopping road car to date.
plus it has a TON of the tech from the actual GT3 racecar.

I think at that level of drivers getting paid to test cars that all of their skills are close enough that allow the car they are driving make the differences
i don't know. it's really a win win as the more manufacturers there are in racing the better it is for us as fans, regardless of who you cheer for
FORDS public mission statement about the GTD was "that their goal was to beat both the AMG GT Black Series and the 911 GT3 RS around that track."

There are lots of cars in the 7ish range 7:10 - 7:30 that are impressive cars.... 6:40 is other worldly.
remember when the black series did the lap the track hasn’t on the best optimal condition and the horsepower difference between the mustang and the gt3rs is huge

The Shelby GT350 is one of my favorite cars of all time made by Ford. There's a few, I have always been a Porsche Fan too but I'm not rich so the Idea of spending House Money on a car is something I can't afford to do... But I am a huge fan of the 911's over the years.. When I was a kid out of all my match box cars the porsche was always my fav.. But now I am older and in the real world so I went with a 2017 Manual Mustang GT Performance Pack and I love it.. The Coyote variants are simple nasty motor's all of them, from Gen 1's, to Boss, to Gen 2's 3's and the GT350 Voodoo and GT500 Predator they are all bad ass motors'.. I went with the Gen 2 because I found one with 8,909 miles on it and I knew I would never find another with miles that low on it ever again!! I just bought my 2017 9 months ago and it's been great.. It's not a crowd killer like people say.. IDK if that just the auto's that crash into crowds or not, But all I know is my car handles great and the fact that it is a manual gives me even more control over the car. So yeah so far so good... But honestly I would never spend that much money on a Mustang GTD.. I am sure it's going to be a Bad ass car but save your money and just get the new Shelby. They are coming in automatic and in manuals this time and there's not going to be any displacement differences on the new shelby's either.. They are going to be Gen 4 Coyote's with Gen 6 Whipples on them making well over 800 HP.. They are saying that the new 2025 Shelby's will have a solid 800 to the wheel's, But if you are really smart you can just Order a 24 Base Model 10 speed and get a Whipple installed on it from Ford for an extra 10K...

...and? What exactly is the point of calling the 991.2 GT2 RS a "7 year old car" besides trying to downplay its capabilities in a comparison? If your goal is to attempt to make the possible result of the GTD beating the lap time of a GT2 RS seem less impressive, then I think you're going to fail spectacularly. The GT2 RS is still one of the fastest road-legal cars to have lapped the Nürburgring, so even suggesting that the GTD beating its lap time isn't impressive is a silly thing to say. Who gives a crap if the car they're benchmarking is seven years old? It makes no difference to me because the GT2 RS is an incredibly fast car and will be difficult to beat.

Yes and no. There's setup considerations associated with it. More grip under braking, more grip cornering, etc... now the suspension has to be dialed so the car doesn't squat too much under braking but this now affects cornering. Not that Multimatic and Ford won't dial in but I don't think a lot of people just think section width equals speed. A Radical SR 10 runs 200s up front for example.
@@swellhunter8605 That car weighs 1,600 pounds dude. Of course it can run 200s up front. It's about heat tolerance and distribution, contact patch, and a million other things too. But weight most of all.
@@117Chief930 yes and no. The question is if section width and grip is the “cheat code” then why doesn’t a 1600# SR10 run say 255s up front? My point is there can never be an assumption that section width equals faster around a circuit. There’s a massive rotating weight issue at hand. My last race car we went all the way up to 305s up front and you know what? The fastest setup on that car was 275s. This was because of camber caster and how we used the effective contact patch. We could run 295s or 305s but we struggled to get perfectly even temps on the pyrometer. That car was 3622# race weight. Now I have a 2360# race weight car and we run 245s. So 100% agree with you about weight but I still say most people just arbitrarily think section width equals more speed on a circuit and that’s just not true. Quite frankly I’m surprised Ford is running that much tire. The Dark Horse is insanely good out of the box and has the best braking of any production car you can buy, it’s a pig and doesn’t have 50/50 weight and it’s on 275 summer tires. You tell me.
I ran 325 SUPERCAR 3R on my GT350 on all four corners. Tremendous mechanical grip!
@@EIGHTLUG Was it faster? If so was it because it allowed you to overcome a mental hurdle because you perceived you could do more because now you had the "mechanical grip". Turning slows down the car so if you did nothing different your minimum apexes would go down with more resistance on the track. This cannot be explained to track day guys. Only racers that have raced a long time know it. I once watched my buddy go down a tire size an win a national championship against everyone else running bigger. It was that significant in straight line speed that he would be able to stick his nose in front of anyone after a decent straight.
Imagine the aero and tires loads on the GTD. I'm hoping the suspension pieces were designed with plenty of strength.

Out of all the American Car Companies Ford has the best engineers for sure.. But I do have to admit Ford has a way of cheaping out on important things though too so always do your homework before buying any car no matter who it's made by.. But if I had to grade the different companies I would say Ford has A list, GM has B list engineers and Dodge has D list engineers for sure.. Yeah that Hemi is pretty nice but it's old as hell and Dodge has a way of throwing Displacement at everything to make power.. It's always been amazing to me what Ford has been able to do with that little 302 and the 289 before that. Just amazing..
You would think the front-engined cars would struggle more. But mid-mounted front engined ones are competitive with suspension and aero mods. Witness the AMG GT3, and now the Multimatic Ford Mustang GT3 in the fold. The V8's put out lots of power, even with BOP enforced. When Porsche releases their new hybrid GT2RS, and perhaps EVO updates the GT3R, they will be back in hunt at the ring. Hard to overcome the HP advantage in current flat six configurations; keeping in mind how well Manthey and AO are doing this season in spite of power disadvantage.
Mid engine cars are superior race cars, period.

It’s a race car built by multimatic it’s not a production line mustang at all. It’s a carbon fiber street legal race car. If they get that car to 3200 lbs with 850 hp it will beat the GT2 RS.

Ford Motor was started by winning a race in 1901. Performance and Racing is in the Ford DNA. Let's not forget two of those overall Lemans victories for Ford in the 1960's the main competitor was Porsche. I am a multiple Ford GT owner/driver, among some others and an aspiring Ford Racing historian.

Interesting Fact: When JWA and Gulf Oil went Porsche in 1970 the 917s were suffering valve train geometry issues. Ford Engine and Foundry offered access to the
Ford computers to John Wyer and the Gulf Porsche team to help resolve their issues they were having at the very high RPMs the Type 912 flat 12s ran.
Porsche (Germany) pride would not take up the offer from Ford haha.

It needs to be mentioned that the Mustang and Porsche used to be competitors on the race track in the trans am series. They are actually former rivals. The late 60s saw American auto makers making a push for track racing. Ford should have kept that but the 70s happened to the auto industry and economy and budget became too important for automakers. When Ford decides to full send something they make it happen every time.
The thing is........ by the time the GTD is released, a year later Porsche will have it beat. Ford will stop production of the GTD and continual development.
I'd take the GTD over the GT2 RS for its uniqueness and its value in the future. It should appreciate similarly to the Ford GT.

lol...a GT350 R beat the GT4??? The GT4 is a baby Porsche, whereas the GT350 R was the apex Mustang track car. I grew up with Fords and Mustangs and have owned some of the most sought after V8 Mustangs going back to the 60's and culminating with my 2000 Mustang Cobra R model but moved on to the 911 (turbos) and then to my current 2018 GT2 RS (with MR mods). The GTD is phenomenal and I tip my hat to Ford for spending the money to go there, but get back to me when it beats the current prod lap record holder at most American tracks, the 2018 GT2 RS, along with its Nürburgring time of 6:43.

I'm a Mustang guy that also loves Porsche track cars. I track with a club that invites all makes to our HPDE days and you'd be surprised at how many Mustangs surprise the Porsche drivers on track. Not that they are an engineering marvel, but they perform quite well considering what they cost. The GTD is on another playing field all together and I'd be disappointed if it wasn't an outstanding performer based on cost alone. I personally don't think, given the powerplant and chassis that they will get there. Kudos for trying though.

The ZR1 has a couple hundred HP advantage over the GTD.

Just did some digging, the number isn’t for the GTD, it’s the GT3 race cars weight.
I was wondering the same thing. There's an interview here on YT with one of the engineers. They said the car weighs about as much as a gt500 at the time, and they were trying to drop another 160lb by production.

As a Porsche die hard I believe this may be true. What I’d want to see is the same driver in all 3 cars on the same track. There’s so many excuses it’ll never be a true match but I think this mustang has balls for sure

It's not an art if I build a racing car and derive a road car from it. Besides, the GT2 RS was only built until 2019, that was 5 years ago. The new GT2 RS will put the Mustang back in its place. But the Porsche meets European emissions standards, so the Gas Guzzler certainly won't.
Ok, that's not of a fair fight, the Ford has 825hp & the Porsche has 691hp, that's 134 more hp.
Let's add the fact that this is a street version of the GT3 race car. The GT2RS is not the street version of a GT3 race car.

What separates the Porsches from a lot of other cars at the ring is the rear engine layout. They can carry so much more momentum through most of the track than front engine cars. It’s very clear at the 24. The Porsches come alive in mixed conditions on the downhill portions of the track. Your car has to be faster and lighter if you want it to beat the 2RS. Simple as that. Anything else won’t do it.

Interesting video!!! I am a Porsche fan. Have owned many Porsches, along with Corvettes & Mustangs. Ordered a Dark Horse 🐎 back on 6 April 2023, (15 months ago). The Dark Horse has out-performed Porsches, Corvettes and the GT-350 on some road courses, but not the GT-350R. Technology is definitely improving the American made cars. Will not be surprised to see the MUSTANG GTD beat the GT2. However Ford interior quality will not match Porsche nor Mercedes Benz!!! Ford is just too cheap.

The Dark horse could beat the base cayman maybe, but that's about it, it would get lapped by a GT2/3/4 RS
I'm a GT3RS owner and tracker.. I also own 12 mustangs, 2 of which are 350Rs.. one heavily track prepped and I run The Ridge Motorsport park 4 seconds faster than what you listed (1:52)... I'm in the pipeline for a GTD.. I'm seriously considering passing on it once I heard Larry Holt, CEO of Multimatic, say it was going to weigh as much as the GT500, "not a light car" is exactly what he said, GT500 is 4200 pounds.. the 991 GT2RS is 3240.. so the GT2RS is almost 1000 pounds lighter than the GTD.. so I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers. We'll see when it's released but from Larry's own mouth the GTD looks to be heavy as hell.

Hearing that laptimes I remember the Pagani Zonda R, which roughly 10 years ago was a record holder for hypercars and now it's slower than an AMG.
the gtd will have to beat the gt2 rs MRs lap time of 6:38.846 since Porsche now offer the MR package from the dealer.
Are you talking about the last GT2RS or the upcoming GT2RS? Even so, if it is the last GT2RS I doubt the GTD would be faster than the Manthey GTR2RS.

Came here to defend Porsche but honestly the suspension on the GTD is very impressive
"GTD has the Porsche beat in suspension" is a gross oversimplification based on a table having more words like a brand and an acronym in it.
In reality, the GT2 has the same technology (active dampers) with more development time behind it AND has active toe, which the GTD does not.
That said, I'd take the GTD over a 991 GT2.

What happened to GTD Nürburgring times? Why don't Ford release the numbers yet? If you are going to advertise, then advertise the times as well.
Your numbers are all over the place. For example, 992 GT3RS did 6:44.x (20.6 km) and for the same equivalent track length 991 GT2RS did in 6:47. 992 GT3RS was quicker than the 991 GT2RS.

That is a huge feat of accomplishment considering an older gt2rs is near perfect even by today's standards. Other than maybe updating the interior or the lights, what else is really needed?

As a Porsche guy myself, I hope that the Mustang GTD will just be a second behind the 991.2 GT2 RS. Then, Porsche comes with the 992 GT2 RS and says: "Ok, then we will beat the seven year old GT2 RS ourselves." That would be awesome!!

Let me just throw at you this : Rimac Nevera 5100lb with 2000hp can not beat GT4RS time , this Ford will be just under 4000lb ( V8 , transmission, frame and suspension) there is no way it will beat GT3RS on the ring , Viper and Corvette tried and no official time
Problem is, the GTD uses a semi space frame with a pushrod rear suspension system, and is an all aluminum car. It's in the low 3000's. Definitely stripped of alot of features.
Hell, I have a cobra daytona replica. Rear wheel drive, v8, manual transmission car and it weighs 2550 lbs. How? Monocoque chassis, fiberglass body, sheet metal interior, plexiglass windows, and an all aluminum engine. It also has indepedent suspension all the way around. YOU GUESSED IT! The suspension is from 2 different mustangs. A 1993 for the front and a 2018 for the rear.

So much to add:
First of all, there was never any discussion about the GT350 vs the Cayman GT4 because there never was any competition between the top Mustang and the entry-level Porsche. Compare the GT350 to a 991 GT3 (a more apt comparison) and it is 20 Seconds slower.
Secondly the 991.2 Gt2RS‘s best lap at the Ring is 6:40 not 6:47. With the later released Manthey racing kit (available at Porsche) they improved the lap time.
Lastly, Ford is aiming to beat an old car. From what I have heard from Porsche, they are aiming to beat the AMG One‘s 6:35, maybe even cracking 6:30.
Once the 992 GT2RS is released this whole thing is over…
