    They did defeat the aliens.
    The general at the end is describing the surge of energy that the omega gave off when it died, which killed the entire alien force.
    Him getting the blood again at the very end and resetting one final time was just luck, they won anyway, he just expected to die doing it.
    They have nothing to fight at the end, the aliens are already all dead when he resets. He goes to meet her again just to get to know her properly.

      @@dabreal82It did fine in box office but this was at the time when Marvel movies were having massive box offices so by comparison, from a studio perspective, it under performed. On top of that lots of folks were just hating on it because Tom Cruise was involved and iirc he had some pretty bad PR at the time from his divorce and Scientology drama. When it hit streaming and rental, people realized they slept on it and that it was better than most of the big action flicks that were coming out at the time,
      So, by definition, it was underrated. Same for his other movie Oblivion. It took a couple years for people to come around on it. While I agree at this point calling it "underrated" is not true because the nerdosphere has embraced it, most reactions I see from folks who had no idea it even existed, broadly it is a fair way to describe it. It was under appreciated when it came but now is widely loved.

      @carlgibson285 2 місяці тому +1

      The helicopter rotor sword was such a good idea that Marvel copied it with Thanos in Endgame. His double-bladed sword is literally the rotor from the Thanos-copter that he flew in a cheesy 1980s comic (the Thanos-copter also showed up as an easter egg in the first season of Loki).

    • @hellomark1

      In the comics she says she uses the blade (and other melee weapons) because bullets run out too quickly. Also it makes sense that it's a helicopter blade because she'd need something she could make quickly in the area, and having a power suit to wield it, you can go bigger than just a simple sword.

    The author of the light novel this was based off on -- Hiroshi Sakurazaka -- was an old-school gamer. Games back then (like Super Mario Brothers, Contra, Galaga, or Sonic the Hedgehog) didn't have save files, so when you died and spent all of your lives you had to start all over from the beginning.
    You get to the point where you'd know what to do before something happened, because you've already gone through that part before. His experiences playing those games led to him writing the novel "All You Need is Kill".

  • @flatebo1
    @flatebo1 2 місяці тому +21

    "For having no weapons, Tom Cruise has been able to survive a lot."
    He survived *because* he had no weapons.
    The Mimics have already been replaying this day for a long time. We don't know how long, but if you assume that the Mimics initially did not know about the invasion, they would have been resetting the day over and over in their attempts to perfect their response. That's why, when a soldier fires a heavy weapon at the Mimics, he is immediately killed by counterfire. The Mimics already know where he is because they have played that part of the "game" before. Cage can't figure out how to get his suit to work. So he's not any kind of threat at all. The Mimics are focusing on the soldiers who are a threat. They know exactly who those soldiers are and exactly when those soldiers need to be eliminated.
    The presence of the silver Mimic means that the Mimics are trying something new in that part of the game board on this playthrough, so the silver Mimics introduces a wildcard element, since its interactions with the soldiers it encounters haven't been part of any playthrough before. The Mimics don't know how any of the soldiers will react to its presence. So, while Cage would have died on every previous playthrough, this time he survives because he had the opportunity to kill a silver Mimic at the right place and time. And he only succeeded at that because, as a soldier, he's incompetent.

    Well, no Jax, the war is over and we won. When Tom blew up the Omega all the Mimic troops froze dead like spiders. Then the Omega power reset the day even early than before, like you read on the blog. The General then mentions in his speech they detected a "large energy serge" early that morning and while it's not on your reaction you posted I remember him then saying in the movie "Russian and Chinese troops pushing through Europe unopposed" or somthing like that. So then it's just GG we won thanks to Tom, Emily and J squad.

    Basic rundown is the movie takes place over 3 days.
    day 1 movie intro , day 2 base , day 3 beach.
    Cage got the power on day 3 and reset back to day 2 most of the movie.
    When he lost the power it was morning of day 2 and they kill the omega on day 2 night.
    So when he gets reset with the omega blood it resets to day 1 when the movie starts.
    But since the omega was dead the mimics had no "brain" and couldn't fight back.

  • @ThisIsMyFullName
    @ThisIsMyFullName 2 місяці тому +64

    39:46 The last line in the article is not correct. The Omega couldn't reset the day in the end because it was already dead. It was Cage who reset the day after he got the blood of the Omega in him, essentially making him a human Omega. The aliens stay dead in the end because they're all one organism that's a part of the dead Omega (15:03) and Cage is not. The ending isn't complicated at all. You're misreading the synopsis that you looked up. The omega reset the day at the end, not Tom Cruise, but because it was dying when it reset all of the other mimics, that required it to survive, died in the reset. Meaning when Tom Cruise wakes up the day prior, all of the mimics are already dead because of a wave of energy(the omega's last attempted reset) that occurred right before he woke up, as is explained in the news reading during the movie. And, because the omega is dead, there is no longer a time looping ability tying off the loose end.

    From my understanding, this film is based on All You Need Is Kill, a Japanese science fiction light novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, published in 2004, with illustrations by Yoshitoshi Abe. I remember seeing it years back and thinking, "Huh, they look like Spartans from the Halo games," who themselves were inspired by the Mobile Infantry from the Starship Troopers (1988) anime, which featured power armor designs that would later inspire Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), bringing things full circle by 2004 with All You Need Is Kill.
    I do wish we got the power armor from the light novel or manga, as they looked amazing. However, the idea that the exo-suits in the film are prototypes still being tested is a unique concept. Humanity wasn’t fully prepared, so what we’re seeing throughout the film is essentially a large-scale field test. If they ever make a sequel, I’d love to see more advanced suits that give off Spartan vibes from Halo and, of course, All You Need Is Kill.

    My theory of the ending: it was the same "reset effect" when he died on the beach and in Paris. However, he died earlier in Paris than on the beach. It was nighttime in Paris well before the beach assault was to begin.
    It's all relative to the moment he died covered in alien blood as to which day starts over.

    • @bable6314
      @bable6314 18 днів тому

      That's not a theory, that's just what happened. He died 18 hours sooner, so he reset 18 hours sooner.

    • @moosed

      @@bable6314 When it comes to time travel, I consider it all to be a theory -- logical assumptions based on observed events.
      Consider this -- before that final day of fighting and before he received the blood transfusion, he was able to go further and further into the day of the battle and eventually to that dam which was a trap.
      He was able to survive the beach landing, then died at another location time after time until he figured out how to get past that point. But, no matter how far he progressed after the landing, he always started over at the same exact point in time -- him waking up on the tarmac.
      If the reset was based on a specific number of hours, why did he not reset to different times later in the day as he survived longer and longer the next day? That inconsistency tells me the theory is either more complicated or has exceptions to it.
      It's possible resets are in increments other than a single hour. Or maybe the resets take you back to a specific point in time, kind of like save points in a video game. Once you get past the next save point, you'll always reset to that point. By Tom regaining the power to reset the day and dying before the beach landing ever started, he went back to an earlier save point.
      Another good question would be, if Tom died at the same time he killed the Alpha, did he replace the Alpha as far as being able to reset the day? If so, then killing the Omega and reseting the day as the Omega might mean he has a longer reset capability than the Alpha.
      Just another theory,, of course.

    Nope, someone with the ability to time travel should be eliminated right away. It is too dangerous for anybody to have that power. They could, and most likely would, make things worse by trying to fix things.
    You might want to read a short story by Ray Bradbury "A Sound of Thunder" in wich the perils of time travel should be thought about. It's not science fact but something to think about. Time travel utilized by any government is a horrifying thought alone.

    Everything MSG Farrell says, like "Battle is the great redeemer, the fiery crucible in which the only true heroes are born." Or when they are caught playing cards: Farrell: "And what is my definitive position on the concept of fate?" J Squad: "Through readiness and discipline, we are masters of our fate." then Farrell says: "You might call that notion ironic. But trust me, you'll come around." Through his death, Cage is literally "reborn" into the hero, thanks to battle. He is, indeed, redeemed. Also, he only becomes the hero because he trains... readiness and discipline are now what he is about, and this makes him a great soldier; and more to the point, allows him to control his own fate!

    Yes. The Omega is killed the night before the invasion. So the reset is back 24 hours on the helicopter. But he's covered in the Omega's blood right before he dies, so Cage basically becomes the Omega for one last reset that he triggers by dying. But since the actual Omega is gone, that's the end.

      I have just one complaint with that analysis. IMO only the Omega is capable of resetting the day, with the alphas/Cage merely being the automatic triggers. I don't think the Omega died right at the grenade explosion. If it did, no reset would have happened when Cage died a moment later covered again in the blood. I think the Omega was on its last legs when Cage died - then the day reset to the helicopter trip - and then the Omega died, along with all its mimics.
      My guess is the Omega is the only being that isn't effected by its time reversing ability. I think this is how it can retain its memories (that it presumably then shares with its alphas). This would explain why Cage was able to reset the day and why the Omega wasn't "reset" back to perfect health along with everyone else.
      Just my take anyway.

    • @mannygee005
      @mannygee005 2 місяці тому +2

      all good stuff. Entirely possible that Cage took over the reset point of the Alpha he killed. That Alpha's reset point was set by the Omega. There is no explanation about the Omega but the Omega could have had a reset point as well which was a day before the Alpha's reset point. Cage took a reset one last time using the Omega's reset point. Remember the original Alpha that Cage killed?, we assume that Alpha never came back to life again, and therefore the Omega also never comes back either but Cage did a final reset one last time but there was no battle left to fight and all the Mimics on Earth were incapacitated.

  • @mrb2349
    @mrb2349 2 місяці тому +1

    37:00 so, you always reset to one day prior to your time of death when you first acquired the power. Cage's initial time of death was 24 hours after he woke up on the duffel bags, and it no longer changes after that, regardless of how quickly he dies.
    But then he lost the power, and reacquired it when they made the Louvre attack a couple hours before the final battle was supposed to be launched, and before his initial time of death. This made him wake up a couple hours before the first reset point, which landed him in the helicopter for his meeting with the general.
    And since the Omega's death was permanent across time, it died the instant Cage reset back.

    The death of the Omega is like dropping a stone in water. The ripples of time move away from the death at the center. Which means the death of mimics in the past and future. The death of the Omega killed the mimics through time. Cage absorbed the power from the Omega before he died thereby resetting time. So Cage reset 24 hours before the beach invasion and the mimics were already dead. The war was over.

    Yea you might missed a bit at the end. The Omega was an omnipresent being, meaning that it existed in all timelines simultaneously. So when Cage killed it, it also dies in all timelines - past, present and future. This time Cage was touched by Omega blood, then able to returned to the point where the story begins, the aliens are now weakened (not defeated), and the chance for humanity to win is now greater, because the aliens can't reset the day anymore. Hope that helps.

If you think about it, Cage went up to Rita in full officer uniform (a Major) and yet she still addressed him exactly the same way as when he was only a private. I think it made him smile and giggle because it signified her genuine character. She is being a sass to him whether he's at the bottom or her superior. 😂 ♥

  • @matthewgreganti4838

    This movie is soooooo underrated. It's amazing. It shows off some amazing character growth. It touches on the horrors of war, the skill gained by repetition, and how deeply war buddies can bond.
    As far as the ending goes, when Cage kills the Omega he gets covered in its blood. The Omega is the one that resets the day and learns what humanity does. So the more they fight the more the Omega can learn and counter it which is how they are utterly dominating mankind. When the Omega dies Cage gets its power one last time but since the Omega is dead the day resets to Cage instead of the Omega. He resets earlier than the rest of the movie because he died earlier than he did originally. With the Omega dead the Mimics have no leadership or direction and are indeed just braindead. So the military sweeps through meeting no resistance.
    Cage goes to find Rita because now he has the chance to get to know her with the advantage of all the time he already has spent with her. And since her last words to him were that she wish she would know him better, they both get that chance without the threat of death hanging over them both. Hence the smile. And of course the song over the end credits is perfect for expressing that.

    no wait... You missed the part where the war was over. In the voice over, the general guy is saying somehow there was a surge of energy originating from the Louvre... which incapacitated all of the Mimics. He then goes on to say "We believe we are going in to take this victory" - thinking that there will be little to no resistance from the Mimics in the coming battle - which will be no battle because the war was over.
    Company J and our two heroes took the day - they won the day before tomorrow... right on the edge of doom. With the destruction of the Omega the war was over. Cage lucked out once again and was reset earlier. This means everyone was still alive because the battle at the beach does not happen. Cage also lucked out that he was not conscripted to be at the front lines because he never met the general and also that it was all over - it's all in the voice over.

    This movie is an underrated gem. Based on a manga called 'All You Need is Kill'. The editing is really tight, giving you just enough information to go "Oh, we're at this bit now," without having to see everything over and over again.
    Fun facts about Emily Blunt's character:
    The sword she uses is made of a helicopter blade, and the reason she uses a sword is because when she was doing the resets, she got sick of constantly running out of ammo.
    When she's getting off the bus and one of the guys calls her the 'Full Metal Bitch' and she punches him, that's Emily Blunt's IRL brother.

    The Omega reset the day when it died, but the Omega is still dead for good (it had one last reset). That means all the mimics are still dead/unresponsive even after the reset. Because they are a hive mind and tied to the Omega. Tom Cruise got the Omega's blood on him when he died but since he is human and not alien, he got reset but was allowed to live since his nervous system isn't tied to the Omega. Once an Omega dies, all the aliens can't function, that includes after the reset

    I always call this like a Sci-fy/Action Groundhog Day, but you haven't seen that (or at least reacted to it), so might not get the reference. This movie does the time jumping mechanic perfectly imo. It's like gaming, you fail, learn and repeat, each time getting further. Can't have a code word because she would forget it each day he dies. She wouldn't have had the conversation in her timeline.
    I think of it like a save in a video game. Cage first died on the beach and it reset 24hrs before that because that's when an Alpha died. It stayed at that spot until the night prior of the day of the invasion, they killed the Omega and he got the power to reset one more time (24 hrs from that point) That's why he was in the helicopter arriving again. I believe he still has the power since he has now become the Omega?

After the preceding scene where they try the last two cars there may have been multiple resets, each getting further and further, and then we're slotted into a scene that, outside of reset, objectively follows right after the "trying the last two cars", but in-reset could be subjective days or weeks later from Cage's viewpoint.

    People often use the word “underrated”, typically incorrectly, but in this case I agree with the use of that word, it’s appropriate. So, I’ll say it, this is such an underrated film, it’s one of the more novel, even unique, uses of time travel in sci-fi. Yes, it does borrow from others, what doesn’t, it’s how they combined things together to turn out something different. Dare I say, it subverted my expectations when I saw it? Maybe, just maybe, for now I’ll give it “uniquely underrated” and “a really good time”.
    Edit: you nailed the end before looking, he reset to the point there which was the morning before the beach landings. Different save point in the game. 😂

    Remember it's one organism. They killed the big Omega, therefore all the aliens are also dead, like it showed when the explosion happened, or at least the ones attached to and controlled by this particular Omega. So, Cruise has the power to re-set the day again, but at an Omega level, ... so he went back another day before he landed and everything is still dead. The General was heard talking about how an energy surge was detected in Paris, which is the explosion/the killing of the Omega, and all the aliens are apparently inactive and they believe they are marching to a complete victory, which they are. Cruise reset the day/days and he goes to talk to Rita, roll credits. I think you might have been talking over the proof that everything is fine when the General was addressing the world at the end.
