- The sacred motet Nigra Sum of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina from his collection Motettorum liber quartus ex Canticis canticorum (The fourth book of Motets from the Song of songs). Live HD video from the Voices of Music Great Artists Concert, October, 2012. Featuring Bruce Dickey, cornetto; Elisabeth Reed, baroque cello and Hanneke van Proosdij, organ. Temperament: quarter comma meantone at A=466 Hz.
Palestrina's fourth book contains a number of works that draw on the style of the Italian Madrigal, but the slow, homophonic chords of Nigra Sum, leavened suspensions and the old-fashioned technique of parallel fourths in the upper voices, are reminiscent not of the madrigal but of the finest renaissance motets from the mid-sixteenth century.
Bruce Dickey on improvisation:
Improvisation was the means by which musicians, both singers and instrumentalists, learned their craft and displayed their skill. Mostly these were improvisations on existing material--motets, madrigals and chansons. Many such elaborations were written down as examples for students and colleagues, and they attest to an extraordinary level of technical skill and creativity. One cornettist, Luigi Zenobi, left us a daunting description of all the things a singer or instrumentalist needed to be able to do when improvising on an existing piece. The improvisation should display all kinds of movement, speeding up and slowing down, leaping and moving by step, creating dissonance where the composer did not write it, creating echo effects of various kinds, and following one style in sacred and another in secular music. He even suggests that one style should be used during the daytime and another at night! My version of Palestrina's motet Nigra sum is inspired by Zenobi, but makes no claim to attain the improvisatory level he describes.

The Cornetto is so expressive, like a human voice. Its hard to understand how it fell out of use when you hear something as exquisite as this performance! It absorbs you in beauty and history at the same time. A very difficult instrument to play, he makes it seem effortless. Breathtaking post!
Plague took out all of the masters of the instrument at once. It’s a very difficult instrument, and the tradition wasn’t passed on. Ambitious young musicians in this vein pursued the violin.
It really does have a sound that is like the golden aura of the sunrise at edge of dawn on a cool day. Like waking up to a warm glow settling softly onto your face amid crisp air.
You couldn't be more accurate!..
I adore the softness of this instrument. So mellow, yet so hauntingly full.
Beautiful.
His cornetto playing is fabulous.
As someone who tries to play this instrument, and knows how difficult and painful it can be, this is quite exceptional.
I tried it and i can confirm thats it is painfull at the first time lol
Its not difficult. Its difficult to find the easy. And its not painful, you are playing too much in the first time's. Frecuently breaks. Not force too much.
@@forveillelier lmao wut
@@scottishcheese13 yeah, thats it.
@@forveillelier uuuh alrighty then?
I wish i could remember who said it: when I was a music major in college, I think I remember someone from the Ranaissance or early Baroque periods calling the cornetto's sound "a ray of sunlight piercing the darkness," and this performance by Bruce Dickey proves that!
I think it was Marin Mersenne. And I agree: this is a wonderful performance! :D
I have watched this many times, and I can't "like" it enough.
Outstanding! Beautiful, charming sound, wonderful playing. Love the "echo" effects.
before i could actually listen to this, i had to scroll down and read the description to find out what instrument that dude was playing...i was like "oh a recorder" and then i was like "woah trumpet recorder!"
Very interesting instrument indeed. In Nürnberg (Nuremberg) in the Germanic National Museum there are - among many other often very old historical music instruments some Zinks, it is so nice to watch the old instruments imagining they were played by persons with big wigs. Here are some Zinks from there: ua-cam.com/video/ZD26fHhQffM/v-deo.html
I have never heard this music before nor seen the corneto but it played to my soul. Thank you so much. Incredible musicianship.
So beautiful, this music and group of instruments is indeed the heavenly consort on earth!

Wonderful instrument and playing. The divisions by Bruce Dickey are perfectly fitting!
It hurts my heart it is so beautiful. Thank you all.
Any praise from me would only be superfluous and redundant. Regardless, I have to say how beautiful and moving the performance is. I became part of the depth of the music while listening. Thanks much for posting this! Music IS strength!
Unbelievable. Such exquisite playing.
Fantastic! Exceptional sound quality.
Le Cornet à bouquin est un sublime instrument.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Bruce Dickey who has done so much to revive the playing of the cornetto.

Just exquisit !
Incredible performance.
Jose Perez Ayala Yes, he's amazing.
Amazing…!
Soothing...
Bruce,what a pleasure
Stunning performance. Thank you so much for sharing it.
E deu certo.
They are great XD
Thank you for the liner notes! Very informative.
larmes de joie tombées du ciel...
Maestro.
love it!!!
Fantastic! He makes it look easy but I bet its a really difficult instrument
It is!
It sure is :)

palestrina, 1525 - 1594
Come si chiamano questi strumenti ?
+edoardo serraglio cornetto, organo, violoncello.
Cornetto o cornetta.
😲
:)
it sounds a lot like a saxophone :P
Will1324657 I don't hear it. I think it sounds like halfway between a trumpet and a soprano vocalist.
@@pearspeedruns Sounds like a trumpet without a metallic voice.
코르넷 목관악기
Il vero modo di diminuir!
To me it sounds like a baroque trumpet - but it isn't!
