    Michael Praetorius was one of the most important composers and theorists of the late renaissance and early-17th century. His astonishing encyclopedia of music gives us an intriguing glimpse into the instruments and performance practices of the time, and his writing covers all aspects of music. Praetorius wrote popular hymn settings, as well as large-scale compositions that borrowed elements of the polychoral Italian tradition. Praetorius was a tune collector, just like the musicologists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who collected songs and dances from different countries; he planned eight volumes of these secular works, but he only finished one: his book of French instrumental dances Terpsichore, named after the muse of dance (1612).
    Orchestration: in the 1960s and 1970s, these works were heavily orchestrated-and conducted-in a neo-renaissance style. Although not grounded in historical performance, these orchestrations did, however, introduce a wider audience to the different kinds of instruments in the late renaissance and early baroque and helped popularize the music before Bach. In our performance, we have used strings as the foundation, as this was one of the most popular ways to perform dance music, and added winds, continuo and percussion.

    I once needed medical treatment in a hospital in southern Germany. There I met a Dr. med. named Praetorius. I asked him if he was an descendent of the famous late renaissance/early baroque composer Michael Praetorius. He confirmed it. And at once my pain was gone and pleasing shivers ran down my spine when we shaked hands. While he examined me we talked about his ingenious ancester and the beautiful music he passed to all mankind.
    So if you ever meet a doctor of urology ask him if he's a descendent of Michael Praetorius. He most certainly is. ;)

    • @th60of
      @th60of Рік тому +3

      Certainly, a wonderful coincidence ;), but Latinizations of German surnames were all the fad in Renaissance/Baroque times. So your typical Praetorius is actually a Schulz/Schulze/Scholz etc., one of the most common German names, meaning mayor or sheriff.

    • @zerotonic2659
      @zerotonic2659 7 місяців тому +1

      @@th60of I lknow this very well. But the surname of this very doctor was Praetorius and not Schultheiss or something. And he knew that he was an descendant of the famous Michael Praetorius. And there was no need to lie to me.

    • @th60of
      @th60of 7 місяців тому +3

      @@zerotonic2659 Of course not, that wasn't what I implied. What I meant was that there are quite a few unrelated Praetoriuses around, some of them probably urologists, so there's no guarantee all of them can trace their ancestry back to Michael. Sorry about the misunderstanding!

    These musicians have such an excellent feel for each other and the music they’re playing so beautifully.....ensemble playing at its best! And I can easily be transported back in time by the mellowness of the gut strings and the recorder, but the percussion is the most evocative. Absolutely lovely.

    This was played as my father walked me down aisle at my wedding in Los Angeles 46 years ago. I wore a Juliet gown in the style of the Italian High Renaissance. The music was a "gift" from a colleague and friend of my husband-to-be. An elderly Italian Monsigneur, also an Italian count, peeked in from the side of the church to catch the beautiful music. This is an wonderful indelible musical memory for me!

      @@tinuvielrhubarbe3850 A lot is anonymous, but as a vihuela musician I can recommend Luys De Narvaes and Cristóbal de Morales.
      A well known modern performer that does a lot of early music is Jordi Savall, so you're likely good if you try to find some of his performances.
      Do keep in mind a lot of the written music by the composers was minimal and very hard to read, so different performances of the same piece can differ a lot. Often only a single part was written down, without specifying the pitch (there was no pitch standard yet) and if a performance has more than one instrument you can assume they added their own parts, to varying degrees of success. This video here is very well done, (and I can vouch for Jordi Savall), but you can be disappointed in occasion.

    Thank you for re-uploading this beautiful music in even better audio clarity. This is one of the best quality, both audio and video, channels on UA-cam. Music fans, use Chrome or Firefox to enjoy the full capability of this channel. It seems IE is not capable of playing webm format(VP9 video and Opus audio), that is now the main data source from UA-cam. IE only plays mp4(mp4 video and AAC/mp3/mp4A audio) at 720P/128kbps at best. Edge plays Opus audio at 160Kbps, but video is mp4. Currently UA-cam limits upper end of AAC/mp3/mp4A at 16kHz, while Opus at 160kbps goes up to 20kHz

      Thank you very much for this info. I may add that Opera (my mainly used browser) has the same problems as IE. I do not recommend it for youtube, especially not for 50p or 60p,always dropps frames.

    So beautiful and heart warming...and I just love the 'bow' note at 5:10, almost as much as VOM does!

      Anglosajón anglosajón anglosajón, todo lo quiere en anglosajón, 😢pero qué pasa con el ESPAÑOL que se puede entender muy fácilmente? Pero si no lo entiende entonces tiene que volver a la escuela y empezar de nuevo

    So wonderful and soothing. On the opposite end of the mindless drivel that passes for popular "music" these days. Perfect performance, too.

      @@YawpMusic I would not describe today's rap and hiphop as "new music" or even music at all. It is just run-off-the-mill noise, forgotten next week as it is replaced by another iteration of the same. Call me a snob 😀
