I watched this video this morning , showed the part where you use the bendable masonry pieces to support cantaloupe to my husband and asked could we go get some and he grabbed his car keys, told me to get in and we went around the corner in our neighborhood where they had just wrapped up construction on the newest housing development and laying in the landscaping, (for over a month) we’re 34 pieces of it, just sitting there, discarded, abandoned and ours for the taking, timing is everything!!! Already placed them and will plant cantaloupe tomorrow, Thank you, great video!
Score!!! Lucky you. Have fun vertical gardening. We always had a huge garden. But now I have a small space. So excited to try the vertical gardening 😊
Angela helping humanity.Realy appreciable
We love growing Armenian cucumbers, they grow very well here in Gilbert!
Thank you for this! I'm growing my first garden. I'm a renter in AZ therefore growing veg and herbs in pots. This is very helpful. And thank you for posting where you get seeds ❤😊
Awesome teaching Angela 😊❤ THANK you so much ❤😊
Love your style, Angela. Thank you for the inspiration.
I’ve been growing Christmas lima beans for several years. They hold up well in soup . The plants are prolific and large so I only grow 2 and they last, drying out into late fall here is SoCal.
Yay! Love hearing that. I planted way more than two... I may have to do more thinning.
Thanks for this video, I'm growing indeterminant tomatoes, beans, and cucumber.
Your explanations are so clear. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I had to cross a state line last year to a more rural area to find a Home Depot that had the ladder mesh pieces but it was worth it. (Still can't figure out why urban stores don't carry it.) I fastened 2 together with wire to make a taller arch and it supported my first attempt at winter squash - very successful! I always grow indeterminate heirloom tomatoes as a single stem on tall bamboo stakes and this year I'm trying a couple of determinates if I can get the seedlings large enough in time to plant in my zone 9b (short season because of heat). I'm also trying cucumbers for the first time and ALWAYS grow Asian long beans trellised all summer because they're so productive and beat the heat. Zucchini and Delicata winter squash later in the season because I think it misses the squash vine borer cycle. I cover with bug mesh at the beginning just to be safe.
I'm going to try the 3 sisters method this year. I'm also growing miss pickers cucumbers vertically, cantaloupe, beef steak tomatoes and sugar baby watermelon. Prayers for a bountiful season! 😊
3 weeks ago just planted seeds for snow peas, winter melon, and sun gold tomatoes to grow on trellis. So far, only the snow peas germinated & is growing but those are coming along nicely (50+ plants)
👍 Thank you for sharing 😎🐢
Cherry tomatoes over wintered in a container. Peas 🫛 growing vertically as well. I want to try pole beans and Armenian cucumbers 🥒. You convinced me 😃
Awesome teaching ❤ thank you so much 😊❤❤❤
I'm a fairly new viewer and I I'm looking forward to all of your videos
I have gained new knowledge. Thank you for sharing, it's really great.
Thanks Angela!! 🥰
A few years ago, we discovered cattle panels as trellises, and we use them to span the walkways between raised beds, allowing the plants to create shade now for the summer that's coming. With 7 cattle panels now in the garden, that gives us 14 different options for growing up, as we grow up both ends of them. This year, we are growing cantaloupes, watermelons, and multiple varieties of cucumbers, Armenian cucumbers, beans, sugar snap and snow peas. And we love growing up! What else do you like to grow up? Passionvines maybe? We are just up the highway from PHX in Black Canyon City. 2,000ft elevation Zone 9b. Thanks!

You are best gardener ❣️❤
I love videos like this! Both the vertical growing tips and the varieties you're growing are invaluable information. Thank you so much!
I am trying chayote squash this year, along with a couple of varieties of indeterminate tomatoes (sunsugar and I'll let the nursery suggest one or two others, as I wasn't planning on doing this when I started seeds). My determinates are my main focus and they're already in the ground.
I am growing beans vertically as well! This includes Kentucky Wonder; I got that recommendation off your blog. My peas are on the other half of this same structure (I will replace them with probably more beans once the peas are done).
I also just rigged up a trellis system for my sweet potato vines, mainly to keep them contained. We'll see how that goes. This is my first year attempting sweet potatoes.
Let me know how the chayote does. I've had horrible luck with that one.
Thanks for a helpful video for ideas of how to grow vertically! I’m doing a container garden only this year and need to think about creative ways to grow up and not out.
I ordered the seeds you talked about & am going to try more vertical gardening! I've done cucumbers in the past, but will try more now! You make it seem so easy, I have high hopes for success here in Logan, Utah!
Wonderful, thank you. I grew those vining zucchini last year. While the zucchini were smaller, the plants lasted almost all summer and took up lessbed space. Since I don't like large seedy zucchini, this was a big win for us!
Thankyou for sharing sweetheart
being up in payson our weatheris a bit differnt. but your info is very good thanks
Yes I am! Up we grow!😆😆😆😆😆 Greetings from Michigan 🥶🥶🥶🥶
Can you say where your trellis is from ? Such an orderly and beautiful garden !!

Great Mam
Thank you for this great video! I’m going to try the painted serpent cucumbers in addition to some Persian cucumbers. Haven’t had much luck with tomatoes but may try that also.
You'll love them!
Brian at Next Level Gardening has a number of tomato growing vids that put me on the right path to finally be able to grow in a challenging climate. No disrespect to Angela - just another source of tips.
You are inspiring. :)
bonjour, j adore vos vidéos tout y est agréable, mon coin potager est tout petit mais grace à vous cette année il a pris de la hauteur , j ai mis beaucoup de treillis et mon mari a fabriqué une arche !!!! bisous de Corse
Thank you so much! Best of luck with your garden. Hello from Arizona!
Wow great vid! Off topic but what type of plant labels r those? I can’t find one that doesn’t loose the writing after a month. Any suggestions?
I use these labels from Amazon: amzn.to/4bcXT4L With these markers: amzn.to/3P8IgC8 - work great and last all season (up to a couple of years)
Try the Japanese cucumber variety "Satsuki Madori", one of my favourites by far.
Thanks. I'll give it a try.
Hi Angela. Please show how do you cut cucumber suckers?
You bet. I don't have any going right now, but when I do - I'll demonstrate.
I found some of those mason trellis thingies you use for your cantaloupes at the local brickyard! I got very excited thinking I could use them as a trellis but I was hesitant due to the floppiness of them. I live in southern Nevada so I also get very high winds. How do you combat the sideways fall of those trellis in high winds? Do you have to brace them or is the wind always hitting your yard from the same direction?
It's great to see they can actually hold the weight of melons as it was the secondary concern I had about them thinking they wouldn't be able to bear weight. I'm very excited to try them now as I have to come up with some trellis systems very quickly!
Putting them deeply into the ground on either side helps stabilize them. I haven't had issues with them in the wind, they've been pretty secure.
I grow vertically mini watermelons, cucumbers, and tomatoes. I used to grow honeydew on the alley fence but the contractors for the utility mistakenly cut my 40 year old concord grape vine in half because it trailed over the chain link fence into the dirt alley (not traveled by people usually other than meter reader and not anywhere tall enough to hit the electric lines). That area it trailed into was actually our land but an easement to the utilities. The contractor laborer did ask to cut my fruitless Mulberry's branches which did go over the lines and we said sure about that but nobody mentioned the grape. So lesson learned.
Huge bummer 😕. The utilities have a easement on my property also.
Tuyệt vời quá
I just bought my first house and I've got a great space for a large veggie garden. I really appreciate the information to grow vertically. I see others have inquired about the trellises you use and you've provided links. I really like the tower trellis you used for the tomato in the container. Can you share a link to that one? Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to learning more from you other videos.

Great ideas! Where did you get your trellis that you have your cucumbers n tomatoes on?

The bunnies and squirrels did so much damage to the untrellised plants last year that I don't think we got a single melon. Trying to locate some cattle panels to bend over the walkways. Ladder mesh is seemingly not available in western Washington. I've been trying for about 4 years, and I just can't seem to find it anywhere.
I've had trouble getting plants to stay on trellises. Do you attach them with clips or string or anything when they're stubborn, or just keep wrapping them as they grow? Thank you.
These are the clips I use for the plants that need help: amzn.to/3Tc5YOK

Have you tried Tractor Supply?
I'm just down in Queen Creek from you. Am I too late to start these plants, based on what I see in your video?
Not at all. That's why I'm posting it now. I would use transplants for tomatoes and get them planted ASAP, but the others are all good from seed. Here's the list of crops and seeds:

Should I add fertilizer to my new transplants? I have a vine and bush tomato, mint, cilantro and parsley. TIA 😊
Let them settle in for a bit before you fertilize.
Is there a recommened orientation for the ladder mesh hoop trellis and which side to start your vining plant? North to south vs east to west?
Great question! Typically you put trellises on the north edge of the bed so they don't shade other crops. I'd start it in the area that gets the most sun.
Curious about your black plant labels with white ink
I use these labels from Amazon: amzn.to/4bcXT4L

hi 👋 i grow everything vertically, i don't have much room so up is easier for me ,cucumbers, cocomelon, melons, beans, peas, tomstoes, peppers i can think of anything else now ,im in zone 9b ,i would love to try a new type of tomato ehat would you suggest?
Check the description, I list all the ones I'm growing this year. Any one of those are good.
Hi Angela, I would love to know where you got your tall arch trellises? Did you make these yourself with cattle panels or did you find them somewhere? I’m looking for an inexpensive alternative to cattle panels since I don’t have the means to get one or put it up myself. Thanks
This is a video about them: ua-cam.com/video/bYxpgkHQvYc/v-deo.html but for a less expensive option you could use ladder mesh block: ua-cam.com/video/Z06njwRw4WI/v-deo.html
@@GrowingInTheGarden thank you so much! Off to watch these now!
Angela, what do you do about squash bugs? I'm planting early and hoping my plants will get strong and produce before they are hit. Any advice for our area will help. Thank you!

How do you keep that thin trellis up to support those cantaloupes? it looks like it would fall over.
Putting it 8-10 inches down into the ground on either side helps stabilize it.

Can you plant summer squash
Zucchini with watermelon
Sure. They do share pests, so you'll want to keep an eye out for squash bugs. Planting them in different areas may be a good idea.
Help me. I live in California high desert. What soil to use? Our soil is clay. Which can I buy? Which crops to grow 😞 I want to grow a garden so much. I don’t have a lot of shade, and it’s sooo hot.
Any pointers please .🙏🏼
Top your soil with compost and wood chips - it will feed the soil. There are many resources on my blog which may be helpful: growinginthegarden.com/
Hi …. Incredible Escalator is out of stock with Renee’s seeds. Does anyone know where I can get some?
I checked a couple of other places and don't see it there either. Hopefully gets restocked soon.
Could you please tell me where I could buy the trellis ?
The ladder mesh trellis is from Home Depot: www.homedepot.com/p/Grip-Rite-8-in-Ladder-Mesh-Block-GRLBMG08/203590053
Can you tell us the size of the ladder mesh? I see 4”-8” and it looks like 10 feet long.
I meant the width of the mesh and what kind of mulch do
You use and where do you get it. Thanks
I use the 4 inch ones and the wood chip mulch from Arizona Worm Farm.
Awesome teaching
Where can I get the wire trellis to buy
Home Depot - Ladder Mesh Block
how many bean plants do you grow on your trellis?
Usually 4-6 per foot next to the trellis.
@@GrowingInTheGardenHmm...I plant less than that and the vines become such a tangled mess.
I wanna do a cattle panel trellis, but I cannot get a cattle panel on my car. How am I supposed to get one home if you don’t have a truck
Uhaul?😅
