There is a book by Lesley Blanch titled THE SABRES OF PARADISE about Imam Shamyl. Frank Herbert drew on it heavily in creating the Fremen culture. Its opening line is "The Murids wrote love poems to their knives." Herbert used that one and many more in DUNE.

Around the same period, there was another Muslim revolt against the Russian empire in the Kazakh Khanate led by Kenessary Khan from 1837 to 1847, Kenessary was actually a prototype for a character of the Khan in Julius Vern's "Courier of the Tsar" or "Mikhail Stroganoff". I believe the correct pronunciation of the term is "Moreed" instead of "Murid" as Sheikh Shamil was their Imam or Pir (پیر) in Tasawwuf and his followers were his Moreeds (مرید).

IMAM SHAMIL fought for 24 years and 10 months. His sister, so that her body would not be touched by the Russians, threw herself off a cliff and died. He gave one of his sons to the Russians to save his soldiers; after many years he returned and died in Dagestan. Dozens of Avar villages in Dagestan were burned for their obscurity. Another son, after the end of the war in Dagestan, moved to Turkey and became the head of the Dagestan regiment in Turkey. Truly, this is a legendary person. May Allah forgive his sins.

Saints are worshiped and praised and sought after for assistance (something certain Sufi sects actually do) and that is not Islam but kufr. Who said you don't need a shaykh? Or ustadh to teach you the Deen? No one said that. We just don't praise a shaykh more than is needed and indeed the best shuyukh would NEVER let you call them a wali or even let you call them pious. Some will even become upset with you. This is the disconnect you sufis have to the real world. That we must be united upon tauhid first and foremost.
