Great problem solving tips, bleeding trusses on a separate tag always worked for me .
    Thanks for another great video

Hi Aaron, I have always assumed that bleed through was an inherent 'feature' of the software . . . until now! I never thought of coming up with a solution. Thanks, I might start to use this technique in my future builds when the need arises!

Thanks Aaron, some nice ideas for dealing with Z fighting I'll be using in my models in the future.

Thanks for the video! I didn't know bleed through was an issue related to openGL. I have exported images and scenes to layout many times and have had bleed through and thought it was just an issue with a compressed image in a window. I usually use imported scenes in layout to show clients what the project will look like. When I get bleed through I would try to tweak the camera angle to get rid of it but then I'm not viewing my project from the ideal point I wanted to. Thanks for the insight!

Another way to improve z-fighting I think was bumping up the OpenGL settings from a standard 4x Multisample anti-aliasing, to a 32x or 64x multisampling. You can do this in Sketchup Preferences. This seems to improve things, but doesn't always completely get rid of the z-fighting, so the method in this video is more comprehensive. One negative of this multisampling way is that with complex models it will slow down your machine (especially if you have profiles and shadows turned on).

Nice! It never occurred to me to hide the edges which are bleeding through. And I bet this could be achieved more quickly using the Eneroth visual merge extension. E.g. use visual merge on truss/sheathing to hide the edges, then optionally rename the 'visually merged' tag with a unique tag name.

I have been wondering what I was doing wrong when this shows up in a model and never knew how to handle it.
In real life the floor and the carpet would not exist in the same plane, so why not mimic real life and lay the carpet on top of the floor offsetting the carpet from the floor as you show in one of the solutions. I don't know what the minimum offset would be to eliminate the flickering, can it be less than the 1/2" you use in your example? Carpet has depth anyway, maybe less than 1/2" for some carpet, but in other cases more.

Why would having the carpet floating over the floor be wrong? I don't see it as floating, I see it as only showing the top surface of the carpet. Remember, the carpet has thickness. It's not just a flat plane on the floor. It has depth. I think a half inch is a good compromise for having separate flooring and carpetting.
Also you can put the raised carpet on a separate layer and have hard woods underneath. That way you can easily flick back and forth between looks.

Usually a finish thickness is not added so that measurements in Layout are accurate. When we dimensions walls we don't dimension them for construction including the dry wall or cladding. I hope that helps

Great tip, shame it can get fiddly on very large models as that takes a lot more time

All very nice workarounds - but for an issue that shouldn't be there to begin with. Z-fighting is pretty much a bug, nothing less. In the case of coplanar faces in separate solid objects the draw order should be easy to resolve, regardless of how small the gap is between them - the nearest face hides everything behind it. Outside of solids, coplanar faces are obviously more of an issue, but they could be dealt with by a simple "draw order" command, similar to the one in AutoCAD, for example. Do I need to go and add this functionality as a wishlist feature?

Wait a minute. Are you fixing something that's not broken? My carpet IS about 1/2" thick. So if you put down a carpet and pad and have a wooden floor underneath, this should turn out okay they way you demonstrated. It's good.
