I sadly had to stop using my HTC one m7 about a year ago. When I bought it, it felt about 5years ahead of other phone in its price range. I loved the alu casing, it felt heavy, stable and high value. It was a worker phone for me that survived a lot and has seen the world. I so far had just 3 smartphones. HTC Legend was my first, then the HTC one and now a less known mid priced china phone.
@@terencew3840 It didnt. At the end I was running around with a powerbank for it. with normal use the battery lastet 1-3 hours. Without using it much it was about 9.
At this point it's a winners take all market. Maybe the only ones that can come in are businesses that have a large enough bankroll that they can throw billions of dollars to catch up to the big two.
I worked at a service center where they repaired htc, and repaired a lot of these. These phones seriously needed adhesive tape on certain spots to function. Looked nice on the outside but on the inside they are a mess.
I owned an HTC One M8, it was apart of there $0.01 promotion sale with AT&T. It was one of the best experiences with a phone I have had. It had a working IR sensor and many other things, at the time, I couldn't think of a thing that I couldn't do with the phone. They also purposefully made it so easy to root and install your own custom OS on and etc.
I had several HTC devices. Starting when they were the OEM for network branded Windows PDA phones then went over to Android with actual HTC branded phones. The best one I had was the HTC One M8. It's a shame that they went the way of the Dodo.
Wow i never expected you to make a video about htc so fast after i wrote that comment, maybe you were already working on it still it's so sad that htc slowed so much in the rush of smartphones innovation and didn't try to come back with even more like they used to do in the past. I remember in 2019 or so using a somewhat old htc from my aunt to play some games or go through the system and it felt so different and interesting from what everyone else had to offer at that time but after that i never heard of HTC again.
The HTC One M8 is still my favourite phone out of every other phone I've ever used. Its sleek, all-metal body just cradled in your hand perfectly. Great size, decent camera for the time and the sound quality was top notch! I miss HTC, their phones were like the best of both the Apple and Android worlds.
I would commit war crimes the world has never seen if it meant they would release a modern One M8. Literally just cram a modern snapdragon into the same shell with a 120hz display and better camera. One can dream, eh?
The M8's camera was garbage. I had a Nokia Lumia 1020 at the time. It got stolen and I got an HTC One M8 for Windows. Camera was a massive downgrade and people knew.

They used to make quality software during the hd2 era and early htc android devices with Sense UI. It was one of the best UIs i've used until now. Plus their handsets were relatively cheap. Everything went downhill for them when they made the battery non-removable, changed Sense ui, and added premium prices on their handsets almost costing like an iPhone. At the point buyers just went for the iPhone.
yes, that's something many of these UA-cam videos fail to touch upon - they make it seem like HTC peaked with the M7 and went downhill after. Every tech site was flooded with Samsung and LG fanboys complaining (rightfully so) that HTC was trying too hard to be like Apple, with a closed system lacking expandable storage and removable battery as well as poor repairability caused by the unibody design.

I used to love my htc one, and have frequently looked up what phones they have when looking for a replacement. It’s a shame that nothing of theirs made me want it, especially when my budget is a mid range phone from 1-2 years ago.
HTC made some of my favorite phones of all time (HTC Evo 4G, HTC One M7). None of the phones I’ve owned over the last several years have me me feel the way I felt using those legendary HTC phones. Sure they made some missteps but ultimately the real reason HTC lost is because they never had the deep pockets Apple and Samsung had to weather the storm of bad phones. Most of their talent was acquired by google and a lot of them now work on the Pixel phones.
Every HTC I owned was years ahead of everyone else (M7 and HTC10 with the face-swap 5 years ago on photos which Google now say AI does this as a whole new thing). Too bad the market is not just Apple and Samsung because both are too expensive for what they offer and are boring. Looking to get something new while my Huawei P30 is still running but especially in Canada, there are basically no options. Quite a terrible situation for an entire country.
One thing not often mentioned is how Android users were more about the serious specs and not marketing fluff. They got a lot of flak for ditching the removable battery and storage during the One series and the headphone jack with the U series. I'm glad they ditched Beats it was ultimately looked down upon by tech enthusiasts as *just* an equalizer setting and the Tegra 3 HTC One X had a terrible DAC/amp compared to the other variants. Apple was able to leverage Beats through marketing and actually improving their sound quality, but I doubt HTC would have done the same if they kept their share of Beats. Perhaps just as damning is how they lost their home base in Taiwan. Although she was known for inspiring and empowering women and youth in the tech industry, Cher Wang became unpopular for her pro-China views amid the rise of the pro-independence and LGBTQ movements. It got to the point one DPP politician commented "I'd rather buy a Korean phone" (which is crazy since anti-Korean sentiment was still very prominent due to a taekwondo scandal in which a Taiwanese athlete was disqualified).
My first smart phone was an HTC Amaze 4g. I remember tmobile's two best phones was the HTC & the Samsung galaxy s2. I'm not sure why I picked the HTC maybe it looked nicer but I do remember being "amazed" by it was an awesome phone being able to stream video for the first time was mind blowing
I only had one HTC phone, the Hero. One dimension of brand loyalty I think should be mentioned is how you feel treated after the purchase, and that means among other things what kind of software support you get. With HTC I just didn't feel I got enough to stick around with them.
yes, it was an absolute shitshow in terms of brand support. The HTC Thunderbolt had its Ice Cream Sandwich update delayed for many months. The HTC One S had the Sense 5/4.2 update cancelled, only because one regional variant could not support it - a bullshit excuse because the phone had the same specs as the Snapdragon One X which later got this update. They also did a poor job with sucking up to carriers which led to delayed and cancelled updates - my first phone was the One X+ purchased in Canada, and Telus never gave it the Android 4.2 update despite it getting such elsewhere, the biggest fuck you was when they patched the Heartbleed vulnerability but still the device was stuck on Android 4.1. My next phone was HTC Butterfly s from Taiwan - they should have released this worldwide. It wasn't perfect but I remember it had amazing battery life and similar performance to the M7, but again they forked software updates so only those from Taiwan got the final Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade.
I blame their downfall on their horrendous naming scheme. I was super into HTC phones back in the day and even I could barely tell which phone was which
My first ever smartphone was an HTC Dream. Loved that slide-out keypad! I've also had the Desire Z, the HD7, and 7 Surround. Their phones were an amazing experience and I was the OG HTC fanboy.
Miss the days when there were so many non Chinese android manufacturers - Samsung, HTC, LG, OnePlus(before acquisition), Sony, Blackberry, Motorola etc, and now it's mainly samsung, with some others barely selling much to make a presence. This competition promoted innovation, and the lack of it is so disappointing.
I loved my HTC phones back in 2006 to 2012. I just couldn't stand having the crappy Window mobile apps store. After Windows Phone came out, I jumped to Samsung Note 2 in 2012. I've had a note every since.
I don't remember what happened. I use to love HTC, they were the first ones to know that windows mobile had a bad user experience and reskined their own versions of windows mobile. I jumped ship to the Samsung Note and haven't really had a compelling reason to try HTC again.
My HTC One M8 is the only cell phone that I have ever had that is actually survived after I gotten got an upgrade. Every other phone has broken and I needed to get a new one. Nothing that I've done. Just the pixel microphone stopped working then the pixel 3 battery started swelling but the HTC One M8 just got old and slow. Still solid
Cool coincidence that just this mooring I was thinking about how the only phone I had that I LOVED the looks of was the HTC One M8. Not that anyone will read this, but I changed to a Galaxy because I thought there was something wrong with the M8 causing bad battery drain. I found out about two months after switching that there was a malicious app on the phone, and I would have been fine to keep using my M8 if I had just deleted that app... Oh well...
I had the htc touch pro and touch pro 2 back in the day. I loved the premium feel of their phones. Pretty much the first smartphone brand I ever used. But then Samsung started dropping there S Series phones and eventually Notes and I switched and never looked back. Now I use the Z Fold phones. However, in the late 2000s and even early 2010s, HTC was the shit! I hope they can make a comeback.
HTC Wildfire S was my first Android phone. I remember turning it on for the first time and how solid it felt. 10 years ago I changed it as it went outdated...
They use mediatek chips a lot in their midrange device make it people don’t want tobuy. So people buy samsung because in some market they sell the snapdragon variant more than exynos variant.
I didn’t even know HTC was still around. That’s more surprising to me. Honestly though when it comes to America you really only have 3 choices Apple, Samsung, and Google. Even then it’s not even close Apple dominates here for phone sales and due to the large market share has a ton of support
I still have my S-Off unlocked, and rooted M9. They lost me when they came out with the "squeeze" feature. Had been using HTC since WinMo6. I switched to Samsung Note 8 when Google bought HTC, moved their developers from Taiwan to California, and then killed off HTC and have their developers focus on the google phone series.
What made my family and friends turn away fro HTC was that the phones were not reliable. Signal was often bad on HTC phones, storage would sometimes lose files, and the camera software was good but chugged super hard when taking pics. I had a couple friends whose HTC phone died on them after what I assume was a battery short or something frying the insides. Never saw that with Motorolas, Samsungs, etc... Shame, that... I wanted HTC to do better. They had some cool tech and cool ideas, but they just got shoved out by other companies doing their version of the ideas better, as the video says.
I think the giant 70's style Clock on the home-screen did not do them any favors. A neat thing about most HTCs was the red accent plastic they would use, even under the cover.

My first smartphone was also a HTC. Forgot which model, but it was a fine piece! Then I had the Galaxy S5, S7, S9, S20+, and now S22 Ultra. Next will probably be a folding phone
I love The Amaze!! I believe one of problem with HTC,was they started to name their with odd names,all the had to do was The Amaze name,like Samsung did,The Galaxy brand. Also they refuse to made handsets 5"-6" screen until it was too late. If Apple didn't accept the fact people wanted big handsets,kept making their under 3"-4",they would gone under.
My first ever smartphone was an HTC. Reviews were great, pics looked good, was excited... I found the touchscreen unresponsive, it froze a lot, problems connecting to the net... It was hot trash, and I soon ended up buying a Samsung and have bought Samsung ever since. The end.
I do not think that is what it was at all, what the problem was is htc was too good for its own good, i had 3 htc phones, and they all lasted 5-6 years, while iphone and samsung create a culture of upgrading your phone every year. So because of sales volumes they could not compete with the big players which means they slowly lost their profit edge and technologic advantage.
HTC had one of the best dual front speakers(Even modern phones still suck in comparison to my old htc phone speakers). It lasted very long, everything was good but they just started being boring. The UI and design was stagnant and software features were sometimes unpolished.
I had an HTC Evo 3D and 4G. The 3D was pretty quirky and the 3D effect worked but was mostly a party trick that I rarely used. I was with Sprint when I had the Evo 4G, and Sprint was the biggest weakness with this phone. Sprint wanted to be first to 4G and it was absolutely awful. Neither one was as bad as the OG BlackBerry Storm though… 😂

If we mean the first phones that uses the multiple cameras for different focal lengths it's the LG G5.
HTC was king of Android and way ahead of Samsung in sales and popularity. It all changed when HTC decided to be one of the first Android smartphone manufacturers to remove replaceable batteries. Samsung follow suit 2 - 3 years later. Those 2-3 years proved to be crucial and pivotal to Samsung becoming more popular and overtaking HTC. People were turned off by not having a removable battery, and Samsung started to put out competitive phones that still have removable batteries. So the market quickly shifted to Samsung becoming dominant. The rest is history. HTC chose to be one of the first Android smartphone manufacturer to comply with NSA and US Government mandate/wishes to remove removable batteries from their phones, and it cost them dearly. If HTC had held out for 2 more years before removing removable batteries, HTC would have held it's leading position.
I don’t think it’s just about market share, but rather having a profitable business. Fairphone operates in a niche space where there are no similar competitors selling on their value proposition.
man, my first 2 smartphones were htc's. But then other and better options came out, so I switched to oneplus for a while (getting the original one, and then a 5T). And then, after over a decade of having resisted Samsung, I got an s22 ultra last year.
i think their big decline started with the HTC One (m7), objectively great phone but with HTC's intense desire to get the literal worst naming scheme of all time it definitely go the ball rolling in the wrong direction. HTC had at least 20 phones that were just called the HTC one or HTC ?1 (with ? being a random letter). Your average consumer is not gonna look the model number of the HTC One just to find out that its a new model, they are gonna see oh i saw the htc one last year, guess it is an old phone. Not only that but it causes massive confusion too on which is the best phone, is it the X1 or just the One or maybe its the G2 since it has a 2. Even apple the cockiest tech company in the world did not have the gall to do that with the iphone
Back in 2014-2015 ish, the HTC One was the phone I wanted most. It had basically the best speakers on any phone out there. I remember a few years after that, they got rid of everythign that made them special, and I no longer cared.
In 2005 I had an htc tmobile mda. What a wonderful phone. I fell in love with htc. Then when the evo 4g came, I went from being in love, to just never letting go of my htc.....but as time went on, they stagnated to me. They just got a little more meh with every release. The worst was the stupid ultra pixel nonsense. Then the Toshiba camera, the.....what happened after that?
I feel what really gave HTC the blow was their demo of HTC M9 in one of the MWC. The phone crashed due to heat iirc. Otherwise, I felt they were still one of the top back then.
Upon further inspection it looks like one of their most recent devices was focused on nfts, blockchain, and crypto. Ouch... Company just doesn't have much luck
I had a couple HTC phones. The last being the One X. I had early failures of the screen on both phones, and even with the screen replacements which were still factory screens. Even though the phones were otherwise good products, I gave up on the brand after that.
I recall when galaxy S3 was launched It was the best selling device by Samsung and most sold smartphone for a long time The equivalent htc model was nice looking But compared to the Samsung it came with no sd card slot and a sealed battery ...and priced higher.. So for most people , it was not the right choice
From my perspective, Samsung's UI played a significant role in enticing Android users to switch from HTC. The UI seemed more appealing, whereas HTC's interface lacked sophistication, and their touchscreen responsiveness wasn't as prompt.
I think another HTC problem is they pretty much neglected the market of mobile photographers. HTC cameras have always been inferior to Samsung and Apple. In the days of m7 the only thing for it was it's beautiful aluminum design

I am watching this on an HTC phone and I generally love their products for their stability. We dropped (unintentionally) HTC phones from the second floor without damage.
HTC imo has best Android than all competitors. I still have HTC explorer with me, now defunct. But at the time was so better and smooth UI experience compared to other smartphones
The late adopter: Just because they weren’t there when you did it doesn’t mean you are the best from then on. Rather late adopters have the benefit of watching pioneers struggle so that when it is their turn, they will use refined technologies and publish it to the users.
I loved my HTC window phones. I clearly like the not popular phones though, I just replaced my Blackberry Key2LE with a pixel 7 running GrapheneOS, I will always miss my Blackberry keyboard and Windows Phone OS.
As a result of all of that, is that we don't have revolutionary tech in mobiles for some time. Yes. there are many phones, that are very good, etc. But nothing, that is truly inspiring and emotional. The phone market now is probably at its most boring level....
I still remember going at least once a month as a kid to a local phone shop just to check out HTC products, back then they were so far ahead of the game, every new device they released seemed to be more cutting edge than the last. I'm equally glad to have witnessed their golden days as I'm sad about what my favourite tech company has become. Thank you people of HTC for your incredible contributions to this industry and I sincerely hope for a true comeback of the company. Thumbs up if you remember legends such as HTC HD2 and Nexus One.

My 1st android was HTC and honestly it was a good phone back then. Then i bought another with the thunderbolt 4g rooted that thing so much customization. Unfortunately Samsung just completely dominated since then and it's all I've owned. I bough 1 other android an iPhone nothing could keep up with Samsung in terms or bulld quality speed and over all ease of use. Truly believe HTC just wasn't as good at advertising myself whereas Samsung is really good at advertising.
Didn't knew HTC was so prominent back before iPhone 1 ...... personally I prefer to attribute their downfall in ...... the PR strategy? After iPhone and Samsung Galaxy series dominates the market amidst 2010, HTC smartphone brand name = Cheap. That's basically just like any lowcost airline with the tag "Everyone can own a smartphone". Needless to say the phone is only purchased for elderly who aren't proficient with smartphones. (~RM300 ish or ~90 USD) And as time move on towards 2015.... even the elderly knows how to leverage mid range smartphone and has A LOT OF NEED for good cameras to share on their circles. Also, those mid range smartphone like Xiaomi(~RM400~RM600 or ~150USD) is now basically the same price as the HTC back in the days of 2.0MP camera smartphone. After that, basically nobody bothered with HTC except for foreign immigrants & even owning a HTC usually means you are doing something shody and that's not your main phone. -A normal user non-tech informed user, Malaysia.
They never expanded to brazil (and probrably south america) so I would say one of their problems was never expanding their market. I remember I was a teenager when my friend showed me their iphone (1) back in 2009. Why htc never even tried?

I bought a second hand unused Apple killing HTC Desire. It asked me if I had a Gmail account. I typed it in and POW! It knew everything. It had an actual button/optical trackball. Absolute gamechanger for me.
I've realized something about the smartphone industry, the only way a company will ever be able to break Apple and Samsung duopoly is if they invent something seriously revolutionary that will set the basis for the future, judt as apple did with the touchscreen
Once a technology reaches a certain point where there's not that much difference in performance style can make all the difference. This is a tale that describes the difference between soft culture power and hard tech. Apple sits in the United States which is the king of cool. HTC being based in Taiwan does not have access to that soft power, to being able to be cool. Beats is a perfect example of that.There is no Dr Dre of Asia. Huawei may achieve technological heights but the world is not ready to buy into Chinese soft power. As you have demonstrated soft power many times is 90% of the game when there is little else to differentiate product
@@LogicallyAnsweredKorea has been more successful in promoting KCool. I had been predicting to my friends that Kpop would start ranking since I first got into Kpop back in 1998. Back then, I was asked by the Korean Ministry of Culture at around the same time; " How can Korea promote it's pop music in the USA " . I was already sold but there was resistance by OLDER grown up cool kids. But that all started to change in the 2000's when I saw the diversity of Kpop fans starting to gain underground traction amongst 13+ year olds. The rest is history and yes we have seen BTS promoting SS mobile products. The USA will continue to dominate when style and diversity meets tech for the foreseeable future as the USA is the king of change and the ultimate global mix master. Every HTC I owned was years ahead of everyone else (M7 and HTC10 with the face-swap 5 years ago on photos which Google now say AI does this as a whole new thing). Too bad the market is not just Apple and Samsung because both are too expensive for what they offer and are boring. Looking to get something new while my Huawei P30 is still running but especially in Canada, there are basically no options. Quite a terrible situation for an entire country.
One thing not often mentioned is how Android users were more about the serious specs and not marketing fluff. They got a lot of flak for ditching the removable battery and storage during the One series and the headphone jack with the U series. I'm glad they ditched Beats it was ultimately looked down upon by tech enthusiasts as *just* an equalizer setting and the Tegra 3 HTC One X had a terrible DAC/amp compared to the other variants. Apple was able to leverage Beats through marketing and actually improving their sound quality, but I doubt HTC would have done the same if they kept their share of Beats.
Perhaps just as damning is how they lost their home base in Taiwan. Although she was known for inspiring and empowering women and youth in the tech industry, Cher Wang became unpopular for her pro-China views amid the rise of the pro-independence and LGBTQ movements. It got to the point one DPP politician commented "I'd rather buy a Korean phone" (which is crazy since anti-Korean sentiment was still very prominent due to a taekwondo scandal in which a Taiwanese athlete was disqualified).
My first smart phone was an HTC Amaze 4g. I remember tmobile's two best phones was the HTC & the Samsung galaxy s2. I'm not sure why I picked the HTC maybe it looked nicer but I do remember being "amazed" by it was an awesome phone being able to stream video for the first time was mind blowing
HTC was the best Android phone maker. Their phones have been phone quality.

One dimension of brand loyalty I think should be mentioned is how you feel treated after the purchase, and that means among other things what kind of software support you get. With HTC I just didn't feel I got enough to stick around with them.
yes, it was an absolute shitshow in terms of brand support. The HTC Thunderbolt had its Ice Cream Sandwich update delayed for many months. The HTC One S had the Sense 5/4.2 update cancelled, only because one regional variant could not support it - a bullshit excuse because the phone had the same specs as the Snapdragon One X which later got this update. They also did a poor job with sucking up to carriers which led to delayed and cancelled updates - my first phone was the One X+ purchased in Canada, and Telus never gave it the Android 4.2 update despite it getting such elsewhere, the biggest fuck you was when they patched the Heartbleed vulnerability but still the device was stuck on Android 4.1. My next phone was HTC Butterfly s from Taiwan - they should have released this worldwide. It wasn't perfect but I remember it had amazing battery life and similar performance to the M7, but again they forked software updates so only those from Taiwan got the final Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade.

My first ever smartphone was an HTC Dream. Loved that slide-out keypad! I've also had the Desire Z, the HD7, and 7 Surround. Their phones were an amazing experience and I was the OG HTC fanboy.

Miss the days when there were so many non Chinese android manufacturers - Samsung, HTC, LG, OnePlus(before acquisition), Sony, Blackberry, Motorola etc, and now it's mainly samsung, with some others barely selling much to make a presence. This competition promoted innovation, and the lack of it is so disappointing.
I loved my HTC phones back in 2006 to 2012. I just couldn't stand having the crappy Window mobile apps store. After Windows Phone came out, I jumped to Samsung Note 2 in 2012. I've had a note every since.
I don't remember what happened. I use to love HTC, they were the first ones to know that windows mobile had a bad user experience and reskined their own versions of windows mobile. I jumped ship to the Samsung Note and haven't really had a compelling reason to try HTC again.
I had HTC win mobile untill the Note 1 came out, ive had note phones ever since, now on the S24u, that's still really a note.
My HTC One M8 is the only cell phone that I have ever had that is actually survived after I gotten got an upgrade. Every other phone has broken and I needed to get a new one. Nothing that I've done. Just the pixel microphone stopped working then the pixel 3 battery started swelling but the HTC One M8 just got old and slow. Still solid

Not that anyone will read this, but I changed to a Galaxy because I thought there was something wrong with the M8 causing bad battery drain. I found out about two months after switching that there was a malicious app on the phone, and I would have been fine to keep using my M8 if I had just deleted that app... Oh well...
I had the htc touch pro and touch pro 2 back in the day. I loved the premium feel of their phones. Pretty much the first smartphone brand I ever used. But then Samsung started dropping there S Series phones and eventually Notes and I switched and never looked back. Now I use the Z Fold phones. However, in the late 2000s and even early 2010s, HTC was the shit! I hope they can make a comeback.
HTC Wildfire S was my first Android phone. I remember turning it on for the first time and how solid it felt. 10 years ago I changed it as it went outdated...
They use mediatek chips a lot in their midrange device make it people don’t want tobuy. So people buy samsung because in some market they sell the snapdragon variant more than exynos variant.

I still have my S-Off unlocked, and rooted M9. They lost me when they came out with the "squeeze" feature. Had been using HTC since WinMo6. I switched to Samsung Note 8 when Google bought HTC, moved their developers from Taiwan to California, and then killed off HTC and have their developers focus on the google phone series.

What made my family and friends turn away fro HTC was that the phones were not reliable.
Signal was often bad on HTC phones, storage would sometimes lose files, and the camera software was good but chugged super hard when taking pics. I had a couple friends whose HTC phone died on them after what I assume was a battery short or something frying the insides. Never saw that with Motorolas, Samsungs, etc...
Shame, that... I wanted HTC to do better. They had some cool tech and cool ideas, but they just got shoved out by other companies doing their version of the ideas better, as the video says.
I think the giant 70's style Clock on the home-screen did not do them any favors. A neat thing about most HTCs was the red accent plastic they would use, even under the cover.

I love The Amaze!! I believe one of problem with HTC,was they started to name their with odd names,all the had to do was The Amaze name,like Samsung did,The Galaxy brand. Also they refuse to made handsets 5"-6" screen until it was too late. If Apple didn't accept the fact people wanted big handsets,kept making their under 3"-4",they would gone under.

My first ever smartphone was an HTC. Reviews were great, pics looked good, was excited... I found the touchscreen unresponsive, it froze a lot, problems connecting to the net... It was hot trash, and I soon ended up buying a Samsung and have bought Samsung ever since. The end.
I do not think that is what it was at all, what the problem was is htc was too good for its own good, i had 3 htc phones, and they all lasted 5-6 years, while iphone and samsung create a culture of upgrading your phone every year. So because of sales volumes they could not compete with the big players which means they slowly lost their profit edge and technologic advantage.

HTC had one of the best dual front speakers(Even modern phones still suck in comparison to my old htc phone speakers). It lasted very long, everything was good but they just started being boring. The UI and design was stagnant and software features were sometimes unpolished.
I had an HTC Evo 3D and 4G. The 3D was pretty quirky and the 3D effect worked but was mostly a party trick that I rarely used. I was with Sprint when I had the Evo 4G, and Sprint was the biggest weakness with this phone. Sprint wanted to be first to 4G and it was absolutely awful. Neither one was as bad as the OG BlackBerry Storm though… 😂

HTC was king of Android and way ahead of Samsung in sales and popularity. It all changed when HTC decided to be one of the first Android smartphone manufacturers to remove replaceable batteries. Samsung follow suit 2 - 3 years later.
Those 2-3 years proved to be crucial and pivotal to Samsung becoming more popular and overtaking HTC. People were turned off by not having a removable battery, and Samsung started to put out competitive phones that still have removable batteries. So the market quickly shifted to Samsung becoming dominant. The rest is history.
HTC chose to be one of the first Android smartphone manufacturer to comply with NSA and US Government mandate/wishes to remove removable batteries from their phones, and it cost them dearly.
If HTC had held out for 2 more years before removing removable batteries, HTC would have held it's leading position.

I don’t think it’s just about market share, but rather having a profitable business. Fairphone operates in a niche space where there are no similar competitors selling on their value proposition.
man, my first 2 smartphones were htc's. But then other and better options came out, so I switched to oneplus for a while (getting the original one, and then a 5T). And then, after over a decade of having resisted Samsung, I got an s22 ultra last year.

i think their big decline started with the HTC One (m7), objectively great phone but with HTC's intense desire to get the literal worst naming scheme of all time it definitely go the ball rolling in the wrong direction.
HTC had at least 20 phones that were just called the HTC one or HTC ?1 (with ? being a random letter). Your average consumer is not gonna look the model number of the HTC One just to find out that its a new model, they are gonna see oh i saw the htc one last year, guess it is an old phone. Not only that but it causes massive confusion too on which is the best phone, is it the X1 or just the One or maybe its the G2 since it has a 2.

Back in 2014-2015 ish, the HTC One was the phone I wanted most. It had basically the best speakers on any phone out there. I remember a few years after that, they got rid of everythign that made them special, and I no longer cared.
In 2005 I had an htc tmobile mda. What a wonderful phone. I fell in love with htc. Then when the evo 4g came, I went from being in love, to just never letting go of my htc.....but as time went on, they stagnated to me. They just got a little more meh with every release. The worst was the stupid ultra pixel nonsense. Then the Toshiba camera, the.....what happened after that?
I feel what really gave HTC the blow was their demo of HTC M9 in one of the MWC. The phone crashed due to heat iirc. Otherwise, I felt they were still one of the top back then.

I had a couple HTC phones. The last being the One X. I had early failures of the screen on both phones, and even with the screen replacements which were still factory screens. Even though the phones were otherwise good products, I gave up on the brand after that.
I recall when galaxy S3 was launched
It was the best selling device by Samsung and most sold smartphone for a long time
The equivalent htc model was nice looking
But compared to the Samsung it came with no sd card slot and a sealed battery ...and priced higher.. So for most people , it was not the right choice
From my perspective, Samsung's UI played a significant role in enticing Android users to switch from HTC. The UI seemed more appealing, whereas HTC's interface lacked sophistication, and their touchscreen responsiveness wasn't as prompt.
I mean, TouchWiz not just didn't drown Samsung, but that also a big starting point where they refined it further, so we have the OneUI today
I loved my HTC so much. But times and technology caught up with them.

I think another HTC problem is they pretty much neglected the market of mobile photographers. HTC cameras have always been inferior to Samsung and Apple. In the days of m7 the only thing for it was it's beautiful aluminum design

I am watching this on an HTC phone and I generally love their products for their stability. We dropped (unintentionally) HTC phones from the second floor without damage.

I loved my HTC window phones. I clearly like the not popular phones though, I just replaced my Blackberry Key2LE with a pixel 7 running GrapheneOS, I will always miss my Blackberry keyboard and Windows Phone OS.
As a result of all of that, is that we don't have revolutionary tech in mobiles for some time.

I still remember going at least once a month as a kid to a local phone shop just to check out HTC products, back then they were so far ahead of the game, every new device they released seemed to be more cutting edge than the last. I'm equally glad to have witnessed their golden days as I'm sad about what my favourite tech company has become.

My 1st android was HTC and honestly it was a good phone back then.
Then i bought another with the thunderbolt 4g rooted that thing so much customization.
Unfortunately Samsung just completely dominated since then and it's all I've owned. I bough 1 other android an iPhone nothing could keep up with Samsung in terms or bulld quality speed and over all ease of use.
Truly believe HTC just wasn't as good at advertising myself whereas Samsung is really good at advertising.

After iPhone and Samsung Galaxy series dominates the market amidst 2010, HTC smartphone brand name = Cheap.
That's basically just like any lowcost airline with the tag "Everyone can own a smartphone".
Needless to say the phone is only purchased for elderly who aren't proficient with smartphones. (~RM300 ish or ~90 USD)
And as time move on towards 2015.... even the elderly knows how to leverage mid range smartphone and has A LOT OF NEED for good cameras to share on their circles.
Also, those mid range smartphone like Xiaomi(~RM400~RM600 or ~150USD) is now basically the same price as the HTC back in the days of 2.0MP camera smartphone.
After that, basically nobody bothered with HTC except for foreign immigrants & even owning a HTC usually means you are doing something shody and that's not your main phone.

They never expanded to brazil (and probrably south america) so I would say one of their problems was never expanding their market. I remember I was a teenager when my friend showed me their iphone (1) back in 2009. Why htc never even tried?

It asked me if I had a Gmail account.
I typed it in and POW!
It knew everything.
It had an actual button/optical trackball.
Absolute gamechanger for me.
I had the HTC One X, i replaced that phone like 5 times due to bugs. Honestly kind of made me shy away from Android.

I've realized something about the smartphone industry, the only way a company will ever be able to break Apple and Samsung duopoly is if they invent something seriously revolutionary that will set the basis for the future, judt as apple did with the touchscreen

Once a technology reaches a certain point where there's not that much difference in performance style can make all the difference. This is a tale that describes the difference between soft culture power and hard tech. Apple sits in the United States which is the king of cool. HTC being based in Taiwan does not have access to that soft power, to being able to be cool. Beats is a perfect example of that.There is no Dr Dre of Asia. Huawei may achieve technological heights but the world is not ready to buy into Chinese soft power. As you have demonstrated soft power many times is 90% of the game when there is little else to differentiate product

@@LogicallyAnsweredKorea has been more successful in promoting KCool. I had been predicting to my friends that Kpop would start ranking since I first got into Kpop back in 1998. Back then, I was asked by the Korean Ministry of Culture at around the same time; " How can Korea promote it's pop music in the USA " . I was already sold but there was resistance by OLDER grown up cool kids. But that all started to change in the 2000's when I saw the diversity of Kpop fans starting to gain underground traction amongst 13+ year olds. The rest is history and yes we have seen BTS promoting SS mobile products. The USA will continue to dominate when style and diversity meets tech for the foreseeable future as the USA is the king of change and the ultimate global mix master. E pluribus Unum .. diversity IS strength.
