What a pair they were, and when they with Gobbi they were an iconic trio. I love this scene, Callas brings it to life. You feel Lucia going batshit as the scene progresses and she realizes further and further how she's been betrayed. Callas puts the hurt, the nightmare in her voice. And the last note, usually an emotionless and tasteless showy thing for any other singer, is a cry of pain and despair as Lucia's sanity slips away, the last we see of her before the mad scene. God bless Maria, the greatest interpreter of bel canto to ever be recorded. Yia Sou Maria
Manoli S. To be honest i like more the pair with Bastianini. Gobbi was fine in Tosca or for Tosca but Balo and Traviata were incredible also by the singing of Ettore.. that guy was equally amazing and i think a bit underrated. He too was amazing ❤️
In 1956 I lined up for thirteen hours to get into the standing room at the Wiener Staatsoper to hear Callas, Di Stefano, Panerai and Zaccaria in in Lucia, with Karajan conducting. In a way, it makes me feel old because it was so long ago, but then, when I remember the day and the performance, it makes me feel so young, because what these artists did was for eternity, it was timeless.
You're not too old. In fact, I feel too young, because i was born almost 20 years later and Callas passed away when I was still a child. I was also born in Austria and know the state opera house quite well. But I never had the chance to see Callas there, so I'm somewhat jealous :) But my grandma did and she told me how great it was and it's because of her I still listening to this music until today.

Il pathos che riusciva a mettere Pippo nelle "parole"... rendere tutto così reale... il "disperda" fa partire un applauso che non ci stava ovviamente ma immaginate il trasporto e l'emozione di quei fortunati.. pazzesco. Fantastico.
My God, - absolutely on-fire-perfection! Stunning to hear. Thanks for this . These were the days my friend. What a rare and wonderful treat to hear, - even the audience.
Callas and Di Stefano brought the best out of each other and reached levels of performance that have never been equalled since and probably never will.
Maria Callas... what more is there to say about her voice alone? But when paired with Giuseppe di Stefano (as shown here with the ultimate voice for Bel canto of the 1950's,) it just turns from good to MAGICAL! Good lord his high notes were on fire and our girl, La Divina, always drowning everyone with her high and powerful notes that encompass the true drama of Lucia -- a woman who is coming to a realization that she's being betrayed and will get her justice.
Callas, di Stephano and Gobbi may have been good but Callas, di Stephano and Rolando Panerai were in a class of their own. Fortunately for us we can hear Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stephano and Rolando Panerai in this wonderful aria. Thank you for posting.

Imagine going this 'crazy' after watching this live today. As opposed to feeling like you were watching High School opera performances. Perhaps major companies could cut performances and use the money not spent on creating digital images of these late greats to recreate their iconic roles with remastered recordings? Then sell tickets to watch that!
It's good to hear this finale without the usual disfiguring cut at the end. Some conductors (naming no names) have no regard for the shape of the musical paragraphs conceived by the composers. It's usually a jump from the end of the big tune to the tonic/dominant vamp and (unwritten) high note at the end.
Well - often at the ends of these big finales the composers tried to show their skills with some interesting harmonies and other musical devices. The bel canto composers are often sneered at for limiting their harmonies to the same I, IV. V chords as our pop music, when in fact their uncut scores could show more variety.
Extremely exciting! One of the moments to die for. What would it be to hear it live... It's 1955 Berlin, isnt' it? I love them together so much also in 'I Puritani', it's like heaven.
Actually, this excerpt is not from the famous 1955 "Berlin Lucia", but from a 1954 La Scala performance with practically the same cast and also conducted by von Karajan. Despite the generally inferior recorded sound, this rather rare, little-known version is, in my opinion, even more successful and exciting than the far better known Berlin broadcast; Callas, in particular, is in fuller, more secure voice and all her high notes are truly blazing, including the E-flats in the mad scene. Arguably the very best live performance of the opera preserved in sound.
I would have big confusion when it comes to choose only one because except this wonderful 1954 Lucia I would like to watch Armida and 1952 Covent Garden Norma equally...
jmiller05 I mean, Maria had been through the Onassis thing and I don't know what Di Stefano's personal life was like. But I definitely think they had some sort of romance, all the times they sang together and then reunited in the 70s.
@@LohengrinO They were infact quite "a thing" in the 1970s. This is one of the only acts I disapprove of Maria - She went to di Stefano's wife and asked her to leave them both alone in their lust. But I cannot blame her for anything; no matter how wrong the acts were- she was so extremely lonely..
One of the best live versions of Lucia with Callas, to be sure, but, for the sake of exactitude, I must point out that the very exciting and long-held high note that concludes the scene is a D-natural above high C, not an E-flat.

The 'vi disparda' in this recording is even more passionate than in the Berlin recording. Without these two stars I may have been robbed of 30+ years of pleasure. Perfection in singing, for me, is the ability to produce emotions in the listener that are redolent of words that are often in an unfamiliar language not perfection in technique. I have seen Lucia several times live and have always left disappointed because the bar had been set way too high.
