I‘ve read the manga and i have to say i am disappointed that they changed the beginning. It was not the old man greeting him and randomly giving him the necklace. He was a old sickly man that mo fan regularly hung out with and the old man passed the necklace to him before dying since there was no one else.
You should also read the light novel, sometimes I alternate between the two, I dont have a good argument tbh other than exodus' translation of the light novel has one of the best insults I've ever seen

Got to respect Mo-Fan a lot here. After everything he’s put up with from being laughed at to a corrupt teacher attempting to foil his test to even those close to him (childhood friends and school faculty) saying that he should quit on the day of the match. He never let his temper get the better of him. If I was in his place, I’d gladly give everyone a good scare and NOT pull my punches on anyone. Wouldn’t care if I’d go too far on those who thought I was a joke.

3 months before the start of the series, MoFan received the necklace and had taken a nap, when he woke up, he was transported to a similar world but here, magics and magic beasts exist.
This was why he did badly for magic lessons in class as he did not have any prior knowledge, and he had no "stars"

Also, in the novels it is explained, that you don't get stars because of studying itself, just that, while studying if you have a good understanding of things and a picture of how things work, you can end up having a control over the first star (since they say they are like living beings and it respects you for all your effort and recognizes your talent, so it is obedient) of the seven when you actually awaken your element. And even that is not that frequent, so it usually stands for someone with a very good talent, hence Mu Bai was considered number one in class, but Mo Fan wasn't exposed to all that knowledge, since he just got to that world recently, hence no star, even though he did have the talent. That's why when he did start practising he was better than Mu Bai, and if people who had one element had 1 hour a day to cultivate, he with 2 elements had 2 hours, but it was totally up to him how he will allocate it. Well we know he opted for full lighting, then full fire.

This is one of my favourite novels, I watched the anime, read the manga and read the novel 3 times which has 3100+ chapters. The story is immersive, everything is so well explained and detailed that when they are commenting about situations you immediately know what that entails and what effects it can have in that world. You can come to a conclusion like you also live in that world, rather than the auther having to explain. It is considered slow starter, and it just gets better as you watch/read so i highly recommend.
The only thing i can find faulty in this series is that there is a factor of luck involved often, and whenever it was needed he somehow had it, just lucked out, for getting some items for example, or just lucked out that the beast he killed had one of the stronger types of the soul, or of all the things he could have gotten, he got exactly what he needed. But still, it mostly has a logic that you can follow, and good cause and effect, so it doesn't bother me if he lucks out here and there.
And let's be honest, most novels that get manga/anime adaptations end up getting some changes in the story, it doesn't stay the same as original, but this was aparently deemed written good enough to not need any changes for either adaptation. I think his eye colour is a thing that changed.

He is basically god mode at the end, but he it takes a loooot of time to get there, and he constantly gets recognized along the way for his growth and for constantly breaking his limits. So cool!

I always get taken out of the story for the stupidest reasons like when they keep saying this is not scientific even tho they are a society that doesn't believe in science etc it's all about magic. The first few chapters in the novel make fun of the MC because he keeps saying stuff like isn't this supposed to be math or history class. it's a small thing but it takes me out of the story.

The manhua chapters in the beginning skip a bunch of stuff compare to the animation. I would call that half ass. Although the manhua does get better, the animation by no means is half ass relative to other chinese animation. I think you are tryint to compare chinese animation to japanese. Chinese animation are typically pretty bad.

Everyone can learn different elements at certain level and some have some sort of hidden talent. Mo Fan talent is that he can awaken two elements at every benchmark (also mean he have to train twice as hard or spend as much). If I’m not mistaken. Most if not all of his elements are the strongest type and/or of offensive capabilities. He lack a definite defensive abilities but he have a human shield… i mean a best friend that is opposite of him with plenty defensive abilities 😅

Moral of the story: Doesn't matter who you are, as long as you are born lucky or with a destiny and all the stars align in your favor, you will succeed.
Seriously, the fact that he is a "Duel Element" (which is already 'unheard of') and those two elements *just happen* to be the rarest 1/1000 elemental types, yeah that made it a bit too unreasonable for me. Would have been more interesting if he was just Fire, and had a rivalry between the Electric user that overshadowed him during the original reveal and the Ice person in the class, or if they wanted to keep the "Duel Element" theme, make them choose weaker-but-complimentary elemental types that would of been cool to see paired together.
Don't get me wrong, story was pretty cool, but I hate that "MC has god-level luck that makes him a god-level threat top tier" style of writing...

But many asian culture do not think that way.
They don't associate luck with randomness, but with karma.
Basically, they consider that luck is deserved.
So the MC deserved to be a dual element.
But this also include being born in a rich family.
That's also why many are okay with P2W games.
Westerners don't think like that. Westerners think that unfairness is real.
Because of this, underdog story are more about a weaker protagonist compensating with hard work and cleverness.
If it is the anime of the Webnovel I am thinking about ... it will get worse ... and worse (Versatile Mage)
He isn't any "god level threat top tier. At this point of the show, he is weaker than an ant in front of a super or forbidden curse mage.. Btw he isn't the strongest in the series. AND there are a lot of lucky people like him with innate talent.

Except it gets stale. You sooner or later realise that apart from the main villainess that all the bad guys are. Cardboard cutouts. I got to Chapter 2200 and dropped in the end. I couldn't stand that the main character in all that time had not changed at all. Had only become more powerful and just as arrogant and conceited as those people he would beat up.
the first 3 seasons are translated by a fan they are fairly well done considereing they arent getting paid i gained a big deal of respect when i had to watch the google translate 4th and 5th season...

Yea like Spoilers cause I'm at the 5th season now but like every other season it's something different and translations are messed up infact in Season 3 Mo Fan got some boots and they just changed the name like that in Season 4 to something else and now it takes time to cast spells and they are spells etc

I am very disappointed at the changes made in the anime. The old man was the leading cause for the magic and non-magic worlds to collide, and he was also very sickly at that. Not to mention the monster hunting scene where he went to “fight alone”. They all came at once but only after Mo Fan found his sister. The manga brought a lot more justice to this series and I agreed that it should be an anime. But they shouldn’t have changed it. Even slight changes like this ruin the plot and original build of the stories base. All in all it was a good watch, but a disappointment when bases to the manga.
