In a remote part of northern Pakistan, a tribe believed to be descended from Alexander the Great is facing cultural annihilation.
As animists, the Kalash Kafirs live by cultural practices which clash with those of the Muslim Pakistanis' that surround them. Their identity is constantly undermined by their Muslim neighbours. Help comes in the form of volunteers from Greece who believe that the Kalash people are part of their own ancient history and worth preserving. New facilities are being built but such help comes at a price. "They are building in their own way...I think they should build like Kalash," complains villager Mohammed. Whether fact or fiction, the Kalasha realise the commercial value of their founding myth and so are keen to preserve it. However, it is their spiritual life and beliefs that they feel are under threat by the growing hostility of fundamentalists. With jobs promised to those that convert, over 6,000 have reluctantly given up their bright national dress to become Muslim. For the Kalash people, both their past and future remain uncertain.

i am a muslim and a pakistani. Ive been to kalash a several times and what ive observed is that Kalash people are an asset to Pakistan! one of the best communities of Pakistan and people are hospital and honest indeed. Accompanied with the charming valley and freezing river, the place itself is a paradise on earth! Their culture shows their humble attitude and love for peace. I totally oppose their forced conversion to Islam as they have a right to believe what they want, n thtz wat Islam says.

I hate how Europeans see a secluded tribe with blond hair and blue eyes and automatically assume they must be European. The Tocharian's were blond blue eyed people who have nothing to do with Europe but lived in Central Asia before the Iranic peoples and Turks moved in.
The Kalash are an indigenous people to South Asia as genetics supports. Get over it.

As Muslim Pakistanis we respect Kalash and Greek cultures but seriously, there is no need to insult Islam or Pakistan.

Almost 500 B.C they Dard tribes spread from Kashmir and Indus kohistan to Gilgit baltistan ' chitral, Nooristan current province of Afghanistan and also some areas of swat valley and they speaks their Dardic languages like Kashmiri, kohistani, khowar, shina, Gowar bati, Kalasha ,Domaki, Palola, etc.
then Dardistan was a country. Alexander 's historian Herotudas called them dardaya.
and Indian Historian Pulani called them Dardu.
They are Aryans they Kalasha customes and culture was not only in kalash but also in Gilgit baltistan before Islam.

Their costumes resembles North eastern people of India...they might look different with their skin colour,, the way of cooking (making bread with liquid flour) , their songs, etc resemble Bihar.their motifs/paintings of deer resemble Indus valley art...to me they are an ancient branch of Rig vedic Hindus...who worship nature and anumals..of they are greeks then India state of Haryana(JATS) and Bihar have more greeks.

I'm not sure if the Kalash actually "claimed" themselves to be the descendants of Alexander's army. In Michael Palin's 'Himalaya' documentary he spoke with a representative of the Kalash, who is Kalash himself, and he refutes any claims that the they are of Greek origin. In fact, the Kalash people claim, based upon their folk-lores, that they migrated from a place called Tsiyam in Southeast Asia. At least this is what they have told many cultural anthropologists...

Their culture, ornaments, wood craft, gods, language etc - all that is a solid proof of one thing only - they are (probably) the closest nation to Indo-European roots. Macedonians, Greek, Russians, Germans, Celts... etc are of ONE ORIGIN. Stop fighting each other - we are are brothers (and sisters =) as we all have common ancient base.

While it is certainly possible that the Indo-Aryan Kalash and Khowar ancestors got an infusion of Greek genes during Alexanders campaigns, it is going too far for the Greeks to try to convince them that they are Greek. Still, at least the Greek patronage shown here encourages the Kalash language and admires their traditional culture, whereas the Muslim Pakistanis who claim sovereignty over Kalash lands seek to crush both.

Those people are not greek at all, Stop fabricating history like this video does, It only says that they are "believed" to be "greeks" but they found out in DNA testing that this is not true at all. They are actually closer to Afghans and Central Asians (Aryans). Hence it mentioned in the video how the Kalash district is close to the Afghan border.

Kalash are not ''Hellenic''.
They are genetically clustered right in between Central Asian and South Asian populations. Moreover their common Y-DNA haplogroups originate from South Asia and are common among Indians/Pakistanis.

These people show no Greek lineages in their DNA, these people actually have DNA that has not been found in any place on the planet, I think these humans are literally the original Aryans that came in during ancient times, plus they're a lot more light skinned and taller than the average Greek, go look up a person called Noah Rosenberg, his genetic chart shows that the Kalash people have a unique lineage that is only found in their group, here is proof from an Afghan forum that that also shows that the Afghani Pashtuns are more Indic than a lot of other South Asian groups like Sindhis and Kashmiris, this chart also shows the Kalash people as being one of the most unique people on the planet.

haha i was brought up and raised in a 3rd world country. and i will tell you how things work there. you give people money and they want bigger an better houses. they get better cars and more land. then they decide they are too good for the people in their village and move to the city. then as time goes on they move out of the country. and people back in the village look up to these kind of poeple. they want to be like them. so thats how it works
m97083, Alexander the Great was only the third Alex of the Argead dynasty, of Macedonian Kingdom. Already his great grandfathers, Amyntas the Third and Alexander the Second spent the greatest part of their reigning days fighting against the Illyrians (who actually are the oldest peoples that have inhabited Macedonia before the Greek dynasties arrived and are indeed the ancestors of today albanians, only problem the Macedonian dynasty hated them guts and eliminated them from their territories!).

There are many South Asians with light eyes, skin and hair. That doesn't necessarily mean they originate from Europe. You should go to some regions in Pakistan and even North India where the climate is cold and you will find people who have higher frequencies of light eyes than even in Southern Europe.
In South Asia, green eyes are more common than blue eyes, even brown-skinned people often have green eyes.
I guess you have never experienced poverty. Go live in the 3rd world for a year and tell me you think the same way.
Rising out of poverty does not have to equate to loosing one's culture. Of course there will be impacts but these people are being forced to abandon their culture completely in order to make a living.

The Kalash must not be converted to Islam. They have a heritage to be proud of. Islamic teachings must have respect for others. If these people are converted to Islam then the rest of world will loose respect for the Islamic faith.
Contrary to public beleif and what History has taught us Macedonia was not Greek but a power that Invaded Greece. The vedic funeral customs seem to be linked to the Slavs the largest European family. One of the vedic texts mentions a god called Srbhinda many see this as a link with Slavs as they all at one time or another worshipped the Sun. Slavic languages "are agued to be the closest to sanskrit" out of all European languages. Simple way to the truth is DNA testing.

Several studies on Kalash found them to be a distinct (aboriginal) population with little to none foreign European contribution to their gene pool. They were found clustered between Central/South Asian populations.
High and diverse frequencies of L Y-DNA haplogroups were found among them. Haplogroup L originates from prehistoric South Asia and is common in India/Pakistan.

Y-DNA gaplogroups of Kalash:
L -25,0%; G - 18,2%; R1a - 18,2%; J -9,1%; R1b - 2,3% . L is mostly Central Asian. G - Caucasian, R1a - indoeuropean R1b -migrating european, J -midterannian. Kalsh first appeared as Central Asian folk then were influenced by strong (indo)european and arab caltural influence.
