Very powerful visuals add to the poignancy of the lyrics. A bit disappointing that only one political figure/party is represented. I'd rather not know of an artist's political leanings. We shouldn't blame one side above the other. But yes, focusing on the past mistakes and what media presents with their agendas can potentially cause our faith to be gone. But that's up to us. Nurture our faith daily and we will arise above disappointments and depression and be able to make this world better for all who follow. Love your music!

Hello sir, the only reason one political figure was represented in this video was because for the past eight years, every person in the world knows who that person is. It has been unescapable. We consciously chose that political office with a "neutral" image, so that people could decide for themselves which side of the aisle they are on. We agree that there is hope for all of humanity to be able to get along, despite our differences of opinions. Thank you so much for watching, and for the thoughtful and caring comment! 😀

This seems like quite a departure from Counterpoint, and in a direction I am less interested in. Maybe it's because I've never paid any attention to lyrics and am only interested in the music. And music-wise, there is little here except a sort of back-up band for the lyrics. I agree with Steven Wilson that the modern music industry makes it almost impossible for instrument-focused music to have any chance at all. To quote Wilson (referring primarily to pop music radio and streaming playlists) "If you want something on radio you can't even have an intro anymore. You can't have any solo." Fortunately, Circuline is not trying to be pop and wants to carry on the progressive legacy. But the pressure is still there. Humans are losing patience and want their music in Tiktok soundbites. If the music has even a moment of boredom (or something that is complicated enough that it takes a while to understand), off they go to something else.
I blame it all on David Bowie. Before Bowie, all the top 10 selling albums each year was from a band. After Bowie, every single year the top 10 albums were all music from frontmen/women (excluding for a while bands that were around pre Bowie). The only exception through all those many decades that I can remember a new band in the top ten is Coldplay. So now music has become a soundtrack, rather than the main event. But I digress...
I guess what I'm saying is that I hope we get more intricate and sophisticated musicianship on other cuts on the album.

Hello Gerald, this is Andrew Colyer from Circuline personally writing you back here. Don't worry, there is still plenty of "progressive musicianship" coming, in the other seven songs on the record. In true "Steven Wilson style", this album has a mix of rock, pop, and progressive elements. Hopefully there will be something you like; I'm predicting that a few of the songs will appeal to your sensibilities. AND, just like Steven Wilson, our intention is to grow our audience with this album, and the most consistent criticism from the first two Circuline studio albums were that the music was good, but the lyrics didn't mean anything. And that because all of the songs were so long, nobody interested in mainstream rock or pop music could maintain an attention span long enough to listen. So for this record, we started with over 100 musical "bits", and focused on the Songwriting first. And launched this first single with an attempt to be "proggy" enough for the progressive fans, but "crossover" and/or "rock" enough to appeal to some more mainstream fans and grow our fanbase.
Also, I'm guessing that you're a musician. The "I've never paid any attention to lyrics and am only interested in the music" is a phrase that we consistently hear from musicians such as ourselves. We totally understand that sentiment. And we have found out the hard way, that we are in the minority. If we want more people to listen to our music, buy our music, attend live concerts, purchase merchandise, the words need to actually mean something. Steven Wilson's words generally do, even if it's the last thing that we actually pay attention to. AND, when you're accounting for songwriting and publishing, the lyrics are 50% of the pie. So you could write the most amazing music in the world, but if you don't write any lyrics, then you only get 50% of the royalties.
I'm not sure you can blame the changes of an entire industry and human beings' attention span on one person. That has been an evolution over four decades with countless variables. I do understand your observation of the "band" versus the "solo" artist that has evolved. However there are still examples of bands writing together. They are just in the minority. And you're right - certainly not the dominating force in popular music.
"There is little here except a sort of back-up band for the lyrics" - okay, yes, this is a departure for us from our second studio album Counterpoint, because we are trying to PROGRESS, and do something different that we have not done before. Is there another band anywhere, who is doing a Groove in Nine like this? When was the last time you heard a vocal break such as the one in this song? How about the Samples used and scattered throughout the first section of the song? How about the layers of world class Dave Bainbridge guitar soloing at the end of the song? How about, "wow, I didn't even know the keyboard player could sing, and now he's singing lead and harmonies"? How about, "wow, that new bass player is really locking in with that drum groove"?
"Just because it's simple, doesn't mean that it doesn't have value" - Frank Zappa
We appreciate your devotion to sophisticated music, and we appreciate you being here as a fan all of these years. We couldn't be doing this without people like you. Hopefully you'll continue on this journey with us, even though there is more "crossover" progressive music happening on this record. There are definitely songs coming with music that you will hopefully appreciate, showing the versatility and virtuosic moments that you like the best. Probably not the second single "Third Rail", but the third single - "All" - and others - you will hopefully listen to on Repeat. 😀

@@CirculineMusic Thank you Andrew for your prompt reply and your comments. They are much appreciated. I really cannot play any musical instruments well, but I like to compose music (nearly all instrumental). I write them on an old computer program originally written for Windows XP using MIDI files. I cannot achieve the quality of your workmanship, but I can at least get my musical ideas down. I've got 33 CDs worth of my music recorded. Although my music draws from many influences, I would say the top three are 1950s jazz, 1970s progressive and late 1800s classical. I've never done any of this for money, so I am free to ignore the whims of the buying public. This is probably why almost nobody seems to really like my music (although I think you might appreciate it). But you are not so fortunate. You have to compromise in order to make a living. I get that. You can find all of my music to download for free at: app.box.com/s/9w96qruti97x320vtklx. But if you just want to hear some of the songs I think are better, you can go to: app.box.com/s/1mti1dsraeel0t855aw87y9wi0cb97k5. Feel free to borrow anything from this if it inspires you in any way.
I've always been fascinated by the differences between "Creators" and "Consumers." It is as if they come from different planets. Unfortunately, creators are forced to live in a world dominated by consumers. And to live in that world, creators have to make compromises that often eat at their soul in order to get consumers to consume their creativity. I thought someone should write a book about that, so that consumers would know how much their dominance over society crushes many creators. I didn't think I was the one to do it, but I did write a 35 page summary of the types of things that should be in such a book. I wrote it from the perspective of music creatives, since that is the perspective I most understand. You can find it at: app.box.com/s/oupov9110qwyktyziqkgwcb9lh24amsk. You can skip the first chapter without missing much. As a music creative, I think you might find this book summary useful in coping with the struggles of living in this alien "consumer world" which I would assume you have (at least in small part).
So I feel for you and the challenges you face being a creative who has to earn a living in a consumer world. I was fortunate in that I convinced large businesses that my creativity in strategy would help them be more successful, so they tolerated me in their organizations and I made pretty good money.
