I had spent years gathering all past scripts of Jekyll and Hyde, going back to the original University of Southern California workshop production in 1986, and in doing so contacted and got to know people from many productions. Eventually I became in contact with a close friend of Chuck Wagner and Frank Wildhorn, who asked them if they had a cassette of the original 1986 demo, and they did, and they gave him a copy of it, and he gave me a copy of it. From my understanding, he mentioned that he was going to make a copy for me, and that I was likely going to make it public, and that was okayed by them, them saying enough years had passed that the release of it wouldn't damage any sales. Now this song is from the 1987 demo, which had been being shared on the internet a few years before, and I don't know who first shared the 1987 demo publically, or how they got it; but now you know how the 1986 demo was made public.
Jekyll & Lisa (Emma). He is engaged to Lisa, why would he sing about still having time with a prostitute who he killed? This song would be sung after confrontation before the wedding, as Jekyll & Lisa getting back together. Jekyll never stopped loving Lisa (Emma), he felt sorry for Lucy, & wanted to be there for her as a friend (& he meant simply that). Hyde took advantage of & hurt Lucy, therefore Jekyll (rightfully) felt responsible. He cared about Lucy, had sympathy for her, but he never stopped loving Lisa (Emma).
Jack Danya Kemplin I didn´t know this song was supposed to be sung in this moment, so it was not impossible that in the original version it was for Lucy. She is not " a prostitute who he killed" only, but also a very special character. ;)
Ricardo Bauler But the song is clearly meant to be between him & the woman he loves, & a woman who has experienced him seeping into a darker part of himself & losing his way. Since he never loved Lucy (in a relationship way), & Lucy never experienced him (Jekyll) losing himself & slipping into a darker side (she didn't know he was Hyde until she was dying), the lyrics would not make sense for Lucy to be singing them.
Ricardo Bauler The reason I seem to know so much about Jekyll & Hyde is for every day for 4 years I collected and compiled every script, audio recording, and video recording of the show ever done from 1986 to at the time I finished my work in 2011. I then adapted all of that into a 4 hour lite-opera of 92 songs, every song, lyric, and line of that opera having been by Frank Wildhorn, Leslie Bricusse, and Steve Cuden, the creators of the musical Jekyll And Hyde. You can read my script here holyguyver.deviantart.com/art/Jekyll-Hyde-Completist-script-208056196 I also run the Jekyll & Hyde wiki jekyllmusical.wikia.com/wiki/Jekyll_And_Hyde_Musical_Wiki
Jack Danya Kemplin I know very well the play, watched in 2 languages, and I have the dvd, I know the dialogues by heart. But that´s not the original version, so I think everything would be possible. The characters and the story were not "complete". Anyway... it´s a pitty that Dr. Jekyll never noticed Lucy, she was much more interesting than Emma, Lisa or whatever. Thanks for the links. :)
so bittersweet💔♾️
This has no right to be as beautiful as it is
it sounds so pretty!

Was it supposed to be sung by Jekyll and Emma or Jekyll and Lucy?
