I would disagree about the body betraying you. Your/our bodies are full of wisdom if you are listening and learning to look within. Your body will tell you what it needs and wants. But we are so programmed and conditioned not to listen and not to pay attention (living from the neck up as they say). It is our minds that betray us with social habits as well as cultural expectations, and so on. This is why so many women think they are fat but in fact, we all know this has led to many eating disorders. Meanwhile, the body is crying out and the soul suffocating. As a prof. educator, I truly believe we cannot change our bodies until we change our minds and fulfill our hearts. All women need to become and be encouraged to advocate for their own health and inner mental wealth. It is a journey, not a wellness goal alone.

I lost my mom last October at age 91. I was lucky to have her as long as I did. She still lived alone. She drove, did her own grocery shopping, cooking, etc. She was very independent and very energetic. She still went to her monthly hair appointments and dyed her hair. Not a gray hair in sight lol! She was 91 but everyone thought she was in her early to mid 70s. On August 12, she had a CT scan of her abdomen. They saw a mass on her ovaries. On August 28, the gynecologist confirmed it was ovarian cancer. Very advanced. She died in the hospital on October 17. We are still in shock. She was healthy otherwise. She had not had a gynecological exam in many years. Her primary care physician said she didn’t need to do that any longer and she was glad to hear that. As a woman who had G.I. issues most of her life, including constipation, bloating, bouts of IBS, etc., she kept thinking that something wasn’t right, but she attributed it to her G.I. issues. Even her primary care physician told her “Lillian, you’re 91 years old. You’ve had bowel issues for most of your life. At age 91 everything is slowing down and it just stands to reason that your issues would get worse“. That was the end of it. Except, my mom knew that something wasn’t right. So she took it upon herself to make an appointment with her G.I. doctor. The PA, a woman, was the one who suggested the CT scan. If it hadn’t been for that CT scan, and that caring PA, my mother would’ve never known she had ovarian cancer. The oncologist that we took her to suggested a very, very mild form of chemo every three weeks. She was up for it and agreed to start. But unfortunately, on October 1, she was feeling miserable. She had not been eating well, we noticed she was losing weight. She also was having struggles with what she thought was acid reflux. So we took her to the hospital. She spent 10 days in the hospital and had her chemo treatment in the hospital. They released her after 10 days, but she clearly was not well. We tried to fight the release, but to no avail. She came home on a Thursday. My sister stayed with her Thursday Friday and brought her to my house on Saturday. The plan was she was going to stay with us until we got to the bottom of things. We turned our guest room into her room, worked three solid days on getting the house ready for her to come and live with us. We told her it was temporary because she did not want to come. She’s very independent. She came on Saturday afternoon, was not doing well at all. We called 911 and had her taken to the hospital on Sunday afternoon, where we learned that her hemoglobin was down to three. while in the hospital, she developed blood clots in her legs. She suffered tremendously the 4 to 5 days she was in the hospital. She requested hospice. After consulting with several doctors, it was determined there was nothing else they could do for her. But the thing that really made me angry is the oncologist on staff in the hospital said to her the day before she went into hospice care “oh mrs. Martell, we’re gonna get you up and on your feet in no time”; in a sing songy voice. My mother just stared at her. The next day when we told the oncologist that she was going into hospice, she looked at us and said “that’s probably for the best“. Never in my life have I wanted to punch someone. Really? Because yesterday she said, said we’re going to get you up on your feet. I’m still very angry about this. Not the oncologist, not the vascular doctor, not the primary care doctor in the hospital said one word to us such as “your mother‘s cancer is very advanced, we don’t think there is anything else we can do for her. We think you should consider hospice”. As a matter of fact, they sent her For a scope to see why she kept throwing up. What they put my mother through is incredulous!
One thing I wanted to mention. The first gynecologist that my mother saw who confirmed the ovarian cancer diagnosis told us that she recommends older women come to the gynecologist and not stop after a certain age.. you do not have to get a Pap smear or any invasive procedure. But you should have your pelvic area checked and they can do this by just pressing on your stomach area. Ovarian cancer is very prominent in older women. Who would’ve thought? Most older women I know stopped going to the gynecologist and even when they see their primary care doctor, they are not getting pelvic exams. This is a mistake..

You are correct. My grandmother passed from the same thing. After a few years of bowel incontinence. She has never in her life gone to a gynecologist

I just turned 70 and feel better than I have in years. Most of us understand the importance of protein.....for example, eating 30 grams for lunch that was mentioned in the podcast. What I recently learned is the importance of a protein plus fat combination at each meal. Understanding what amounts of each to consume at a meal depends on one's body weight, height, etc which was determined by a nutritionist. Including the fat with the protein decreased my cravings. I was finally able to lose the visceral fat around my belly. I feel great and believe I was able to go off my blood pressure medication because of this way of eating. I do exercise which includes weights. I did NOT do this on my own. I was under the guidance of a nutritionist and physician. The Dr Ashley Show is another great resource. I am grateful for all the smart women out there. Great podcast!

  • @samiageldner3451

To all those women who hate exercise, I do too, but at 62 I am in better shape than many of my friends who exercise regularly, but have ruined their joints in the process. Why? I have always integrated movement into my daily life. I walk everywhere I can, rather than take the car or public transport (I do realise that is a little easier in Europe than in the States). I also almost always take the stairs (even to the 5th floor) unless I am carrying a very heavy suitcase or groceries. I find that this method fits better into a busy life and tends to be more gentle on your joints as we get older. I hope those of you who don't like exercising might profit from this. I do admire those who manage to do healthy type of exercise, but beware not all exercise is helpful.

Doctors only care about their own niche and if what you have doesn't exactly fit, they say good luck and send you on your way to keep searching. Also a primary care is scared to helping further ordering of tests for patients, i.e., mri. Instead go see a specialist. All these things are more copays and more office visits which waste a patients time and money. It's infuriating. And if you're not feeling well for whatever reason is exhausting and a lot of people just give up. I've had severe back issues for years with multiple surgeries so I've lost all patience with doctors. The patient is the least cared for. I'm about to have my 4th set of spinal fusions and I've had to fight every step of the way to get help. It's not right.

I wish these ladies would have been offering these services 30 years ago when I was in the midst of menopause. I think what stops many women from reaching out to alternative medical care is their out of pocket cost when insurance doesn't cover it. That is a travesty in itself; that insurance doesn't provide for the care that many mature women need.
