  • From 6000-3000 years ago, the indigenous people of Alaska focused their lives on hunting the massive herds of caribou that inhabited this region. They made side-notched projectile points to tip spear throwers and used specialized hunting techniques like drive lines. These people belonged to the Northern Archaic Tradition. In this video I flintknap one of their stone points and discuss the archaeology of the Northern Archaic people.

I'd love to see you knap an Andice point from Texas. That's the holy grail find for us arrowhead hunters down here. Love the channel and your chipping skills. Keep it up brother.

@@pathwaysofthepast hey man you have the skills to do it I’ve seen all the other points you’ve made there killer it would take a lot of practice to knap something like that I’ve tried multiple times but I just can’t seem to not snap the ears off

Are there any good books (or other resources) about the Northern Archaic culture that you'd recommend? Where does one procure the pressure and percussion flaking tools to start knapping?

I don’t know of any books, but if I were you I’d start with the link in the video description, that website has some information and two good articles. I’m terms of tools, I usually recommend Flintknappingtools.com

Isn't that Browns Bench just weird? It's simultaneously the most ignorant and forgiving material. It will crumble to dust and yet make the most paper thin and sharp points. It's labeled "obsidian" but it does not act at all like an obsidian. It's my personal favorite, but I'm biased, since it was the closest material I had to learn on.

It is strange stuff, it’s seems extra prone to snapping like it’s not very elastic. I do like it’s silky appearance though!
