I really enjoy you playing, the way you connect your ideas. My concept of what a trumpet should sound like must be that of the past. It seems like the trend for a trumpet sound these days is a diffused, teutonic, tone alla Miles. It's to the point where you can't tell one player from another. Four trumpet players that you can pick out in one bar of their playing. Louis Armstrong, Clark Terry, Lester Bowie, Al Hirt, I've recently discovered Don Fagerquist and felt like i've been living under a rock. What a pure tone this cat has, what style in his solos, where he plays just enough to have you wanting more. May I encourage you to check him out if you haven't already. Keep at it my man, you swing.
sweetpapajazz I’m with you, the super diffused and lacking upper-overtones sound is absolutely not my thing! I like trumpets with some brightness, edge, and sizzle! That’s the way I play as well, bold, I don’t want my sound to be veiled! That’s just me, apparently these days.
Bryan Foote Brass Vocals Music OTOH even Miles Davis is said to have remarked of Herb Alpert’s playing “You year three notes and you know it’s Herb Alpert.” Although I like Al Hirt’s playing on some of his 1960s hits such as “Java” and “Cotton Candy” I find his tone way to bright, high and “thin” (like someone letting air out of a balloon) and much prefer Herb Alpert’s warmer tone. To each his/her own, as always.
That was beautiful playing, nice sound. Btw, is that a memorized piece or were you reading it, or what? Seemed a difficult piece to memorize, but I could see reading it. You were so together with the accompaniment I didn't think you were improvising, but if so, it was damn good. I say you were reading it -- what was it? Great playing in any case.
