I knew a jazz trumpet player that does not like Arturo Sandoval. He likes Wynton Marsalis. He says Arturo doesn´t know to play Jazz.
I agree Dihelson, sorry but.....is this Jazz?..........a bunch of ego, the big key on Sandoval success has been his ego.......HAS BEEN!!! Lord..I mean, he´s to old for this crap.....Only , anyway I dont like Marsalis...hes so borig...no jazz feel....just rhytm feel, but he was great on classical,
Kelly Goerbig it's hard to describe Arturo as a jazz musician because he came to be as a trumpeter in Cuba during a time where jazz music was banned for being "too American." Jazz was what he loved, however, so his taste on music incorporates some pieces of jazz, but is very different so that he would even be allowed to play in his government controlled band. I understand views that he isn't a cut and dry classic jazz musician but that's because he literally would have been arrested if that was the case
Some people think that Jazz is only what Louis Armstrong played. Actually, there are many styles of Jazz, like Smooth Jazz, Caribbean Jazz, Fusion, Electronic, Acid, etc. All these were made with the original jazz philosophy, improvisation and several local rhythms, so for example, Jazz took a new direction when it took some elements of the bossanova style. The same thing happened when Jazz merged with caribbean Salsa, Rhumba, etc. So, today when we talk about JAZZ, doesn´t mean we are talking about the old 1920s or the big band era or even Bebop. Jazz is broader than that.
