Rest in peace, Phil Schaap. You were the great witness to several generations of jazz players. WKCR became a New York City cultural treasure, partly because of you & those you inspired. You always knew which were the very best recordings.
Thank you.
I understand that WKCR will continue to play recordings of "Bird Flight" (Charlie Parker recordings) at 8:20 am everry week day, and possibly also Traditions in Swing on Saturdays at 6pm.
I actually was crying at the news of his passing.
Phil Schaap was truly irreplaceable...There is nobody that knows what he knew.
He was incredible, a living archive, a literal incarnate institution...
A leviathan of music history.
You cannot overstate the wealth of knowledge this man possessed. This world is a darker place without him.
Phil and Ken in the same video. 2 monsters of the genre. Thanks for this.
You're a great man doing a great job keeping this music alive Phil. Thank you!
I used to listen to Birdflight on Sat evenings on WXCR in NYC for many years. At the end of the program, Phil would sign off with Goodman's 'Goodbye".. A sad but beautiful tune...So I am going to sign off and say GoodBye to Phil. Nobody knew more about jazz history than him. One thing I remember him doing often when playing Charlie Parker was playing maybe 3 takes of the same recording. I would talk to the radio and say -Really? Just play the best take ☺
I love Jazz since 1962. Al Wellichan from Brazil.
Thanks for the upload! I listen to Phil every morning on my way to work - I don't have to go far but I always get to hear Birdflight at 8:20am. :)
Been hearing Mr. Schaap on 89.9 since around 2000. I though his name was Bill Shaft. Mr. Schaap know so much and he wasn't even born when these jazz great we're at their prime. The best time is around early Sunday mornings. The songs from around the 1920s and 1930s are very relaxing and put you to sleep.
great series ...
RIP Phil Schaap.
What's the song in the background of this video?
