Clorox Hammer Clorox Hammer the problem is that the dev of the original Cave Story (“pixel” is his handle) shows no interest in making a sequel or franchise of any sort and I’m honestly ok with that, Cave Story is good as is and there are many fanmade attempts at a sequel, Jenka’s nightmare being the most prominent as a mod of the original game.
Apple Justice The original version is freeware, so anyone who wants to try it can. Then if they enioy it, they can buy Cave Story on the 3DS eShop for $10, Cave Story+ on Steam for $15, Cave Story+ on the Switch (either in retail or the eShop) for $30, or Cave Story 3D on the 3DS (retail only) for $40. Cave Story 3D is not recommended. It's the only version that runs at 30fps, and is missing almost all of the extra content. The 3D models look pretty, and there's one hidden-away extra area that is exclusive to Cave Story 3D, but that's all it has going for it. Instead, go for CS+ on the Switch. It has almost all of the extra content, and is ten bucks cheaper.
Clorox Hammer A Cave Story sequel would be great, but there's simply nowhere for the story to go. Quote and Curly served their purpose, The Doctor and Ballos are dead, the Demon Crown is destroyed, Balrog and Misery are free, the Mimiga are safe, and Quote, Curly and Balrog have all settled down somewhere together.
Ahh. This run reminded my time of speed running hell in Cave Story + version and holding WR for 4 years and 7 months. I no longer speed run hell, but I still love this game to death.
hey man, your speedrunning hell guide got me to get a sub 3 minute run in hell. never been able to do it more than once but that one time is all that matters
My youngest sister got this on the DSi shop years ago, and all of us siblings had a file on it, but I never personally ended up finishing the game. I oughtta change that someday. So many games to play, so little time...
I personally prefer the remastered soundtrack (I think it came from the 3DS remake), it just sounds so good. The Wii Ware soundtrack is just... alright, I guess. But the original and remastered come out on the top IMO.
I was so pissed I missed this game, been practicing some speedruns in this game on my own, was finally able to pull off two tricks in the same run, skipping the dragon sisters fight after picking up the upgrade, and the heavy press skip in Hell
impressive run. I beat this game many times growing up and it's so hard. I remember getting stuck on Monster X for a long time. This runner makes the game look so easy, as speedrunners do. Extremely cool!
I died to Monster X almost as much as I died in hell. Had I known that I could use the life pot and get another one afterwards, I would have had significantly less trouble.
Yes, nostalgia. Cave story is a great game and I didn't realize that it was being run this GDQ. I'm surprised that they ran the English translator-less version(It's an extra file that lets you skip changing the computer to Japanese local), maybe there is less text boxes. I'm sad that I'm nowhere near as good, blooded sanctuary is insanely hard. I also had no idea you could stand on Balrog in the power room fight. Next GDQ I hope we get a TASBOT run of Cave Story. I'll leave with BEST SOUNDTRACK and remake extras(Playable Curly).
I love how Cave Story speedruns aren't about finding exploits withtin the game to skip stuff, it's more just about pure knowledge of the game, and raw skill with the mechanics
Amazing run! It's insane how consistent Shadax is at this game (especially the booster tech -- many of those corner boosts are _really_ difficult to perform consistently). Lots of epic moments in the run, like the damageless Lab M (the first two floors of it, at least), the basically-first-try Waterway skip, the Cemetery boosts, the frame-perfect boost out of the teleporter, the Misery round skip (the entirety of that boss rush, actually)...hopefully this won't be the last time we see Cave Story at a GDQ!
I must be playing this on hard or something because I swear the blade didn’t do that much damage against Monster X. He was hitting for more than like lv3 missiles for me
The unskippable cutscenes are the only thing that's stopping me from replaying this game. I absolutely love it, but the walls of text are just intolerably long -- it makes it completely unplayable.
You can't collect multiple dogs in a single run in the older versions of the game. That feature was added in the Switch version (the version run here was the original freeware 2004 PC release).

everyone play Cave Story if you haven't already, it's an incredible game
I second this.
I finished Cave Story+, I just wish the developers stopped making remasters and remakes of the same game and just already made a sequel.

I'm happy there's a new run of Cave Story again after so many years
Great job Shadax!
Second fighter pass featuring quote...
A man can dream
or King
Or curly
I doubt quote will be a fighter, but a mii gunner skin for quote and curly is definitely possible
The character I want the most and he's never even close to top 10 on polls. Makes me sad
That would for sure be the dream, sadly a mii or nothing is more likely.

@@Tgang01 I'm glad my old guide was able to help you out. Always try to improve when you can!
at first i misinterpreted your comment and was like "how could the fastest time possibly be 4 years and 7 months???"
Yo i just watched that run that was sick dude
Yo with your hell weapon selection I got a 1:59.8 sanctuary time attack on dsi
Love when he shot to the beat of the song while moving through certain parts lmao
30:55 am I the only one who noticed shadax shooting to the beat of the music?
I remember beating hell for the first time on my 3ds in the back of my parents car, was great
My youngest sister got this on the DSi shop years ago, and all of us siblings had a file on it, but I never personally ended up finishing the game. I oughtta change that someday. So many games to play, so little time...
So true
Happy to see Cave Story at GDQ once again.
I just watched cave story for an hour and i loved it!
Plays game cautiously.
Gets punished.
Goes Mach 1 during story based game.
Nyoom.
Amazing game and run tho
Seeing someone play my childhood game like this makes me so extremely happy
Same
It's so wholesome watching him shoot his machine gun to the songs, like in 24:30, 41:00, and 51:17
Amazing boost movement! Really enjoyable run to watch.
still the best video game soundtrack ever
It's a great soundtrack, but there are definitely better ones out there (such as Xenoblade, Ys, Persona, Final Fantasy, Ace Attorney, etc.)
I personally prefer the remastered soundtrack (I think it came from the 3DS remake), it just sounds so good. The Wii Ware soundtrack is just... alright, I guess. But the original and remastered come out on the top IMO.
damn good run shadax, wish it wasn't at such a bad time of day. good job on the commentary couch folks as well!
I'VE PLAYED CAVE STORY EVER SINCE I WAS 9 AND I NEVER EVEN THOUGHT OF THE BAT TRICK
I was so pissed I missed this game, been practicing some speedruns in this game on my own, was finally able to pull off two tricks in the same run, skipping the dragon sisters fight after picking up the upgrade, and the heavy press skip in Hell
Amazing run, really enjoyed it!
I'm glad they run this game for this year. The Game is one of the most important Indie Titles that made the Genre popular in the Videogame Industry
I love cave story
Seeing this run inspired me to beat this game again for the first time in 2 weeks

WELCOME ❤️ HELL
is... is that a touhou reference??
Very glad to see my favorite game speedran by such a big community
I love this game so much. Getting the achivements was really hard but really fun.

this is one of my favorite games of all time
great speed run
I had so much trouble with the last bosses of this game and Hell in general. Watching this is cathartic, haha

WOAH WAIT
YOU CAN SAVE CURLY?? HOLY SHIIIITTTTTTTTTT
Enjoy 😎
YES OF COURSE. YOU DO THE BEST ENDING WITH CURLY
Amazing run! It's insane how consistent Shadax is at this game (especially the booster tech -- many of those corner boosts are _really_ difficult to perform consistently). Beautiful game
Been waiting for this one. Nice run!
I absolutely love everything about this game, but I'm not very good at it and have yet to make it past Monster X.
So cool to see Hell run so confidently.
This game is GOLD
Love this game! I hope I’ll be able to see it live next gdq
He makes it look so easy!
love the part at 30:56 where he shoots with the music
He does the same at 51:15 haha
He did it at 8:23 too lol
I was just about to say that then I saw you LOL
Kinda hoped they'd talk about the brilliant story as they go, or play on the English patch for the marathon so the text wasn't corrupted. Ah well.

"Brilliant" not that deep
amazing run!!
I didn't know the Polar Star was a machine gun.
I must be playing this on hard or something because I swear the blade didn’t do that much damage against Monster X. He was hitting for more than like lv3 missiles for me
Good job!!
Childhood memories :D
nice run
To this day I still can't beat Ballos. The runner makes him look so easy.
knowing the strats makes the fight incredibly easy, kinda sad that you can cheese through it because it ends up being anticlimactic
@@Martykun36 after all the shit you have to get througth to kill him id say is still pretty satisfying to beat him
LIT
GG Shadax!
What's wrong with the text?
Is the machinegun REALLY faster than the Snake?
Wait how did he start the sacred grounds with missiles? Do they only take them away in the remake?
The unskippable cutscenes are the only thing that's stopping me from replaying this game. I absolutely love it, but the walls of text are just intolerably long -- it makes it completely unplayable.
There's a skip option on Switch.
It took me so fucking long to beat Ballos I’m pissed
Someone remembers this indie gem?
nice
Doritos are EXP, does that mean that Hearts are Mtn. Dew?
Why is the text all nonsense?
I believe they explained the computer isn't in the right mode to display the Japanese text properly. Something like that, anyway.
why did he get the jelly a second time? if he wasnt going to use it?
The bomb requires it. And it kinda sucks, you really have to get it 3 times for the story without the skip.
Why not get all the dogs at once? Feels like it'd be faster...
I think that's only possible in the newer versions of Cave Story. in the original, it's one at a time.
You can't collect multiple dogs in a single run in the older versions of the game. That feature was added in the Switch version (the version run here was the original freeware 2004 PC release).
i believe you cant do that in the original game, only in the remakes
