cheers mate...great video, clear and concise
The best dj is back. Amazing bro🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
very well told , very detailed
Welcome back mate & great video
Covered such a raft of info, end to end, that I needed for my new DJ project, and, so, subscribed up bro..
Big thanks! Much more content is on the way!
Thank you sooo much for this video I started DJing ....my friend asked me to record a mix for her and didn't know how to start or what
Im glad that you made a new video again. Stay safe
Thanks! You as well! Happy mixing!
Thanks man, that was really helpful!
very well make video, I keep coming back to it for reference, just subscribed too, thanks for taking the time to make it.
Cheers mate. Many more videos on the way. Got any ideas or need help? Just let me know!
Thats great tutorial. And all pro can get look at this one to learn something about
Bless and thanks you
Thanks for the video. It worked perfectly for me
Wow! Thank you for this man!
Really useful video!! Thank you
Awesome Video!! I Might Get started Using One of Those Interfaces to Make Mixes for My Mix cloud
Great idea. I highly suggest the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. They're the go-to interface for music.
@@DJSt3rling I'm Looking at Getting that one
Bless up bredda!... Give thanks! 🙏
A analog mixer like the Yamaha MG 06 works just like the audio interface. But you have more input channels in the mixer and a phantom power for a condenser microphone.
great vid man thanks!
Thank you so much My Bro 😎. Peace ✌🏽 🇿🇦
Welcome back
Thank you
Cool Video 👏
Sorry about the music at 1:57. Idk what happened LOL but youtube won't let me correct it
Thank you so much! This is immensely helpful. What are your driver settings in Audacity i.e. how does it know to also take the sound from rekordbox and not just the mic? Can you also please share how to do the same in Ableton? Would be super helpful!
Amazing video
Thanks, Rahul!
@@DJSt3rling Yes! SO simple and to the point + explaining all the gear. I appreciate the time you put in!
Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback!
Thank you...I tried what you said. And I bought a PreSonus Studio 24c 24bit audio interface. 2 inputs on the front and left and right out on the back. I tried several versions of how it may or should go. Nothing is working to give me the audio through the mic. Is there something I'm missing from the rca out of the DDJ-400 into the audio interface... thanks for your help with this
Thank you so much! I've been looking into getting the Scarlett 2i2 and was wondering if it was possible to connect it to both the monitors and controller. Cheers
Yes! Scarlett 2i2 is the best interface to purchase in my opinion! Happy mixing!
Thank you for this video! I just want some advice before I commit to buying decks. I had to sell CDJs due to losing my job and have a djm-900nxs for which I use a Macbook pro (no mic input) & Behringer U-Control UCA202 so I can record mixes via the "rec out" on the mixer. I'm looking to get the DDJ-PLX6 due to the budget and need for 4 decks but I'm concerned I won't be able to record mixes as easily as I have before. Will this method work? I've never had to connect the master to anything but a mixer so naturally have a concern in regards to the sound coming through the speakers too through the interface. Will I be able to record mixes considering these factors? Or is this merely for recording with a mic ?
what's model on colling pad? Vid super helpful
Can you explain how to do this on Apple? Using logic pro x
Hey! I bought an XLR condensed microphone that needs phantom power. Can I still record my sets and my voice through Audacity if I connect it directly to the Scarlett Solo?
Thank you!
i have a focusrite with two xlr spots and got the cord with one xlr and its recording very softly on audacity. ya think i need the other cord?
It's almost like you made this video for me
hi there dj sterling. i've followed everything and can record in Audacity, only thing is cant hear the headphones when switching driver to focusrite in rekordbox settings, does this mean I have to plug headphones in soundcard rather than ddj400, and if so will cues for both channels work in the same way?
Thanks
Can we use mic directly to controller ? Which mic for DDJ 400.
Nice video where did you take your stand for your dj 400 cobtroller?
Thanks! I got it from Amazon. Here's the link: www.amazon.com/KLIM-Ultimate-Laptop-Cooling-backlighting/dp/B07NNQXTQT
A question, can the mic be used while recording on recordbox.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
Could you check the same with headset?
Can I use echo effect on my voice with this setup?
It seems that the audio is mostly instant to the speakers (no lag). The only thing is that the sound to the speakers and also the recording is now mono. Which sounds like crap. Stereo, u need stereo!
Hey Sterling, I just ordered the scarlet solo, the cablXLR, but was wondering, Do I still need the speakers to get to hear the mic output?
Nope! The mic comes from the RCA stereo (master) output of the (ddj-400) controller. So if you connect your dj controller to the Scarlett solo, it will receive the mic signal (which can be heard from your PC). While speakers/monitors are not required at this point, I typically run a pair off the of output of the interface anyway (to reduce lag).
hey! I've followed this exact set-up except I'm using the audient id4 interface instead of the focusrite. I've got each device talking to each other, but I'm only getting a mono signal back through my monitors. I've sifted through the rekordbox preferences and can't seem to find any solutions - do you have any ideas? do you think it's a problem with the interface?? thanks :))
Your Audient id4 interface has only 1 JFET input (mono channel). If you want a stereo signal from your interface, you'll need to upgrade to one which supports a stereo signal.
How can you record a mix without the external audio interface from the same controller, using rekordbox? I’ve tried audacity with a HPEnvy 360 running AMD software and it doesn’t pick up any output from the mixer
In Rekordbox, go to preference, audio, and check the box for "output audio from the computer's built-in speakers and your DJ equipment (PC MASTER OUT)". Then, audacity should be able to record your mix from Rekordbox (without any additional hardware). Let me know if that works (There are some settings you can adjust in Audacity. But typically, everything works w/ default settings).
great video congratulations! the microphone is connected to the DDJ400 and the voice will come out on the speaker by selecting the microphone on the notebook selecting this audio interface?
Correct. If you plug your mic into the DDJ-400, you will hear it over the speakers. However, if you record your set in the Rekordbox software, it will not be saved. If you use an audio interface (and plug your mic into it instead of the DDJ-400), then you can record the mic with your set.
@@DJSt3rling thanks DJ.
My pleasure, Alex!
Brother, why is my interface only recording the DDJ400 as a single channel??
I'm trying to do this in ableton and it isn't working. The music from rekordbox is not coming thru to ableton only vocals from the mic.
Are you using an external audio interface?
Let me explain why it's needed below (for others):
With Rekordbox & Ableton, you cannot output audio from RB and simply record w/ Ableton (software to software), because they can't both share the sound card simultaneously (however, Audacity works a little differently than Ableton for recording). The easiest (and most universal workaround) is to plug your DJ controller into an external audio interface. Then, Ableton treats your music input just like any other musical instrument and may easily be recorded.
If you ARE using an interface already, can you tell me a little more about your setup? Cables used? mac/pc? How things are connected. Then, I have a better idea. Cheers.
Great job man! Can I use garage band? I have two mics, ATBP40 and Shure SM7B, can I use either to record voice instead buy another mic? I have a Scarlett and ddj 400
Yes, either mic will work & garage band will work just fine. Just, recall that the mic input for the ddj-400 is standard size (in terms of cables/connectors). Happy mixing!
@@DJSt3rling thanks for the reply. Instead of using the mic input on rekordbox, can I bypass it by plugging it into the interface? Just wanna avoid buying another mic if I really don’t have to.
Yes you can! The ddj-400 doesn't process the mic signal anyway. It is just a pass through. So connecting it directly to your interface is fine.
@@DJSt3rling awesome! I hope we can all hear you dj in heaven when we get there. Peace ✌🏿

What laptop stand is this your using? I like how it looks !
KLIM ultimate RGB cooling laptop pad. I also love the look! The lights have a bunch of different settings.
with that connection can you record from the rekordbox app your voice with the music ?
Yes! If you run Audacity (free) in the background, you can capture everything from Rekordbox (music)+ your mic (voice)! 🎤
Wow
Hii what are your settings on audacity? I keep getting an error opening recording device message :(
Can you explain your hardware your setup? Also what operating system is on your computer?
Why do I need an external audio interface to record?
Doesn't my DJ controller have a sound card?
Nearly all DJ controllers have internal sound cards; even the DDJ-400. They're required to play music and enable the hardware features of the controller. Specifically on the DDJ-400, the only way to record microphone output is to capture it from the master-output of the controller. This because the mic input is direct-to-master, meaning that the mic signal bypasses controller hardware & Rekordbox software.
If you want do not care about the mic output, you can connect your controller directly to your laptop (without the interface) and record. However, in this video, I'm giving you a solution which will consistently capture all output using any controller and any music management software.
Higher end controllers/mixers are now starting to come live-stream ready (w/o needing an audio interface), such as the Denon X1800/X1850 mixers. Denon calls this feature "broadcast mode". I hope to see many more controllers adopting this feature
Lastly: Only attach an external audio interface if you're recording/live-streaming. If you're just playing music out-loud, remove the interface. It may add unnecessary latency otherwise.
More info on latency: manual.audacityteam.org/man/latency_test.html
and if you want to connect it to your iphone for recording, where do you connect it bro?
Irig Stream (mobile audio interface)!
i just bought focusrite scarlett solo 2rd gen, get the same cable but it records only one channel. Looks like this interface have only mono inputs, how did you get through that?
ok cable was issue, I searched over internet and looks like i need to make some special wiring with ressistors. I have a lot of noise at mic input
Ok thanks for the update. Sorry I've been afk during the holidays. What kind of nice are you using?
Is there a way to use headphones with the audio interface?
Yes. But what are you trying to accomplish?
excellent, but in my case i can´t hear nothing throught my headphones ( cue ). Any tips to solve it?
Yes. Can you describe your setup please?
@@DJSt3rling I solved it!! The problem was that i had mi controller conected to my computer by an USB hub, so i connected it directly to my computer and done, the headphones worked. Thank you for answering by the way!!!
Ok great! Glad you were able to fix it. Happy mixing!
GM .... I have another question. I ditched my DDJ 200 , got a SB2 and Audacity followed your instructions . But now I only get sound on the left when I record in Audacity. What step have I skipped ?
Np. You have a mono signal coming into Audacity. Stereo is always 2 (typically a left and right channel). You simply need to convert your mono to stereo in the software by duplicating your waveform. It will be easier if you Google instructions than if I type a lot here. But try this and lmk if you get stuck. Google "Audacity convert mono to stereo" and choose the second result (chacadwa.com).
@@DJSt3rling ok I'll check it out and let you know.
Do you have to change any settings in audacity for it to start picking up what you record
It depends. Are you on windows? Laptop?
No, Mac..
Does the interface need to be connected to speakers to record? I currently use a guitar amp or play straight into headphones while mixing. Thanks for the video brother, very helpful!
Nope! Speakers are for you to hear. If you just want to record, you don't need them!
@@DJSt3rling I connected my mic to the controller but can’t find the option to use it on rekordbox. Any suggestions to what is going on. Where do I go to activate it on rekordbox?
Nothing will pop up for a mic in Rekordbox. If you have speakers/monitors attached, just start taking into the mic and you should hear yourself.
Keep in mind that the mic is wires as direct-to-master on the ddj-400. So Rekordbox cannot see/record any mic audio. Also, make sure you sure up the mic volume (level) . The encoder (knob) is next to the mic input jack.
@@DJSt3rling so there’s no option to add fx to the mic, like echo or reverb?
No sir. Not on a DDJ-400. All you get is volume for the mic. If you want those fx, you'll have to upgrade to a mid/pro level dj controller or route the mic audio elsewhere (other hardware/software).
Hey man, I was wondering, i used the ddj 400 as an audio interface for mic input in to reaper. If you can coincide your dj software with a daw, why would you need the separate audio interface? Arnt you just attaching an audio interface to an audio interface? I know I'm missing something, but what?
The Ddj-400 only plays mic output from its master rca speaker outputs. Thus, Rekordbox never sees it. So I ise the audio interface to route the audio (with mic output) back to the PC for recording in my DAW. There are other ways to do this, but my interface solution simply works for all generic cases.
Lastly, soundcards ("interfaces") *in* DJ controllers are limited, in general (even in high end models).
@@DJSt3rling Thanks man, appreciate it, I'm just trying to penny pinch 😄 You're right though, I wondered about the sound quality i was getting, which wasn't bad, but not really acceptable.
Im not bothered about vocals for the ddj alone anyway, so I'll just ditch it, and get the focusrite for the daw.
ThanKs again 👍🏼
Np! It is my pleasure. Happy mixing.
bit late to the game, but my question is, would this method also allow you to broadcast (radio stream) with a microphone as well, rather than just recording
Yep, same idea of routing audio to the pc.
@@DJSt3rling thank you so much , Ill test and let you know :-)
My pleasure. Good luck!
Hello. Looking at specification the xlr input of the focusrite is a microphone input. Can you also use it for line input ?
Yes!
@@DJSt3rling i ve just tried with my yamaha ag03 but all that i hear are sound artefacts like filtered... is there some trick for it to work please?
What cables are you using?
@@DJSt3rling i bought a xlr to stereo jack cable
@@jipenade did you solve your issue? im struggling it right now :)
With this setup, if you don't want to record and you just want to do some mixing, will you be able have the master output to monitors and listen to the other channel with your headphones ?
Yes. However, if you don't want to record/stream, then you don't need the audio interface. Just send the master rca stereo output directly to monitors/speakers and use your controller's headphone jack for your headphones.
@@DJSt3rling True! It happens that I own already one and thought that the audio might have a better quality
Would this method not destroy your stereo mix though? Surely that's not a good thing?
How so? Do you mean by using a mono signal (cable)? If so- I have a Scarlett solo. Alternatively you could use a Scarlett 2i2 (or any interface which supports stereo input).
I didn't realise that from your video but yes I would prefer stereo input if recording. Good video though!
Cheers
what about the headphone?
Sorry, what is the question?
I have a DDJ 200 .... so I'm screwed right ??
No, you're not screwed! You can use your DDJ-200 in this setup!
You'll probably need 1 more cable to route audio to the interface.
My interface uses XLR input(s) and the DDJ-200 splitter cable (speaker output) is a 3.5mm jack.
So I'd need a 3.5mm-to-XLR (male) cable; Your setup is probably the same (depending on your interface).
Here is an example cable:
www.amazon.com/CableCreation-Stereo-iPhone-tablet-more-Black/dp/B077VQ28J2/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=3.5mm+to+xlr+cable&qid=1612720245&sr=8-5
@@DJSt3rling I have the Solo 3rd Gen .... and thank you for the help from a new sub !!
Thanks for the the sub! It means a lot!!
Everything will be the same with a Solo Gen 3 except that it outputs TRS. So for example, you may attach your monitors/speakers to the back of the interface using a TRS-to-XLR cable.
@@DJSt3rling Ok great ... i'll order that cable also .
i just hit u up on instag
