  • Learn how to download, install, and use Windbg, Microsoft debugging tool. We will explore Windows Error Reporting and Nirsoft’s AppCrashView tool. WhatisHang is another tool we will explore in solving application hangs. We will set memory dump types and examine them using Windbg.exe and Nirsoft’s BlueScreenView tools. We will analyze both crash dumps and minidump files. We will learn how to use dumpchk.exe to validate that our memory dump files are valid prior to uploading to Microsoft’s technical support. A great way to explore these deeper dives into advanced troubleshooting.

Excelent video. I have been using windows at home for ages now, but never go into troubleshooting as most issues get solved by reboot . Definitely will like to watch more windows tshoot stuff.

I been trying to figure all this out myself add this video just encouraged me that I'm learning has been on the right path which is cool! And nice to know it's not just me that was struggling with all the out dated documentation for all this stuff! Getting sent to that page asking me to subscribe to 365... So annoying! 🙏🏽👍🏽

Once again a masterpiece tutorial. I really enjoy your insight into the Windows troubleshooting approach. By the way, in any case, if I can't boot into Windows due to a bluescreen error, how would I generate a memory dump file? should I use Windows PE bootable USB? any advice

I have been looking into this problem, this is not an easy one. There is a serial/usb way to connecting a laptop with a debugger to a second computer/server and trying to see what is going on. This is complicated and not sure you want to go there.

Really excellent tutorial full of wisdom from a real sage and expert! Only one question: Which version of Windows SDK shall I install on Windows 10 version 21H2? Could I install the Windows SDK for windows 11 or not? Thank you.

The Windows SDK (10.0.22000) for Windows 11 provides the latest headers, libraries, metadata, and tools for building Windows applications. Use this SDK to build Universal Windows Platform (UWP) and Win32 applications for Windows 11 and previous Windows releases. developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/windows-sdk/

Hi Lowell. Are you familiar with the "analyze wait chain" in task manager? (you run taskmgr, then go to the "details" tab, you right click on the process that is frozen and you click on "analyze wait chain"). I sometime try it at work, but even if I find the process that the frozen process is waiting for, I can't do almost nothing. If we kill this process we kill everything so this is useless. This is an example of functionnality that could be helpful, but at the end you don't really understand how to actually use it for troubleshooting...
BTW as a French guy I don't really understand the differences between "hang" and "freeze". Does it mean the same thing? Thx.

Great comment, I do remember looking at that new feature but completely forgot about it! Many of the tools I share in the video are limited in what they can do for the IT pro, but they do allow us to share valuable information to DevOps or software support so we can communicate intelligently about the issue. Great question about the word's "hang" and freeze, typically applications go into a non-responding state or "hang" and grey out on the screen, lockups/freeze is more typical of operating systems that become non-responding.
