Ray Chen is absolutely correct. A musician can be technically perfect in the notes they’re playing, but they need to be able to play with emotion as well. That can be the difference between being good and being great.

Ray wasn't teaching her to play the violin, but how to bring the music to life though her violin. She is so fortunate to spend time with a true virtuoso who can bring this out. He can see that she can play the notes; but now he is taking her to the next level. I've followed her for a few years, but this is the first time I've commented.

I've been following her for several years. Like you said, she knows the notes. To express the feeling the composer wrote in the music, is the next step!
Putting myself in the role of a music critic, just now, Karolina wasn't capable of understanding that level of intensity, here (at this time).
She's still quite young.
The "angst" that Ray Chen was trying to teach Karolina to express, through her music, is "foreign", to her.
(And, why should she already be familiar with it? she has lived a sheltered...but no doubt "supportive"...life, up to this point, in her 15 years on the planet.)
An afterthought:
I have already listened to her Mendelssohn performance. She "is" a virtuoso, to be sure!
Karolina will become a "seasoned veteran" (of this genre) with the passage of time.
No doubt. 🎉
Chen is a good teacher: he certainly knows how to "stretch" other performers-- to reach higher.
Kudos, to him.
Listening to a lot of recordings will be helpful, together with an almost obsessed curiosity about what's actually happening.
This guy is fascinating. I'm not a violinist, I'm more a humble singer and pianist/organist but I can't stop watching this video. Everything he said is right. This is the same thing when you sing, you have to transmit an emotion to your audience, and it goes through the variation of accents and all the things that this man who is certainly above us has told you!
You can see and hear that Ray Chen not only loves playing the violin, but also lives it. It is really wonderful that Karolina was able to learn from such a great virtuoso of violin music. Mr. Chen is just unbelievable. He makes me want to bust with emotion when he plays There is so much life and raw emotion when he plays, it is so strong that the audience gets swept up and starts to FEEL what he feels through his playing. You are so lucky to have him. You are worth it. Embrace what he is teaching you. You are turning into an artist right in front of our eyes, but grasp on emotionally what he is trying to convey.

Listening to him speak about the emotion for every note in music is an amazing insight. That's exactly how I love to listen. It's so nice to hear this. Master class is right. Not every note is going to be perfect. There's always a chance with the next note 📝
This training from Ray Chen will probably get you into the best music school, the same one he got into. He had to audition twice.
It takes a MASTER to learn from a Masterclass, and to teach one. Bravo !

Ray Chen, what a nice and generous person, I think he sees all of Karolina's potential and has taken her under his wing. Look at Karolina she’s like a sponge she absorbs everything Ray teaches her. Karolina 15 yo can you imagine what’s ahead for her, sky is not even the limit. Love this behind the scene.
I was in the viola section for your November Mendelsohn performance. Having experienced playing in Mendelsohn concerto performances many times before, it was a great pleasure to experience this one and to have the opportunity to support your performance. The orchestra and particularly the conductor seemed fully pleased with your performance. While your performance this time already seemed outstanding to us compared to other performances we have played in, I hope you have more opportunities to perform and continue to perfect this concerto in bigger halls and/or with other orchestras.
Apart from our Karolina getting a Master Class from Ray Chen, there is no one better than Ray to give lessons! Karolina, you are always willing to learn, that is what will make you as well known as Ray in your future. Ray is one of the nice people in this world. I can't wait until there is a video of your classical performance with the orchestra.

The way Raychen was giving those all examples to Karolina Protsenko was excellent presentation & especially classically he's fully perfectly Mastered & also i noticed in this video he was giving clear explanation very practically on how to play classical with the emotions & while playing classical music how the emotions comes from sound, after watching this whole complete video Raychens classical playing & explanations with different variety emotions of sound was perfect, Excellent Great Presentation & Excellent explanation, Thanks for sharing the video 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜👍🏻

Thirty six minutes of preciously valuable information given to a student who will incorporate it into the life of her music. The best thing about it is we will see it in her play in the days and weeks and years to come. This video was done 3 months ago and you can see and hear her development even today. It is a combination of this and all of the others things she does to perfect her performance. If I were a performer, I would edit to the best of what he had to say and listen to it every day.

Very very fortunate to spend time with a violinist and person of Ray Chen’s talent, knowledge, professionalism and prestige is WOW! His insight of how to transfer feelings to sound. How to play and project sound to the audience furthest away from the stage and demonstrate enthusiasm and insight for each note played. What she gained from this is priceless. I’m not a violinist but still gained knowledge from listening to him.

I love listening to Karolina play classical music. Her street performances don't call for this discipline. This is a priceless lesson. You can easily hear what he's teaching her. So subtle but very noticeable. Karolina is a brilliant student. She will be a master playing in packed halls very soon. She brings tears.

It’s so cute you got dressed for Ray. Ray is such a nice guy too. Love the enthusiasm. Dad seems cool as well. Ray is covering a lot of ground here. Cool thing is you can watch the video again and again and then work on each part. DONT worry that Ray has many suggestions, he is only meeting with you because you deserve his time. I love that Ray is always working with kids and sharing his knowledge with these young talented people.

This is so much more than a masterclass! Understanding the emotion behind the phrase of notes is so beautiful to watch and to hear. Karolina is like a receptive sponge, soaking it all in. I would love to see you both on a stage together, talking to each other via your violins - the conversation would be electricity to everyone’s mind and heart. Ray is so wonderful. Renting an entire place just for a masterclass. And karolina is such a good student. Even though most of the time the teacher is the issue when people struggle in something, the student also plays a key role and In this case there's both, an awesome student with an awesome teacher, the key to success. His control of dynamics and bow control is just amazing. I noticed how much control he has when the bow changes direction. He uses the sound the bow makes when it changes direction as part of the expression of the note. The masters make it look easy, but as you watch this video you realize how much thought and practice goes into their ability to make it look easy. It's not easy at all. Even though I don't play the violin, I found this very enlightening and informative for simply speaking and talking to someone. It's all about expression. Great video!

Karolina I'm happy you got this training from Ray Chen. He is teaching you to reach out to the audience with your eyes instead of keeping them closed all the time. This was a wonderful lesson to observe. You know the music so well but learning new techniques from Ray will do you a lot of good.

Thanks a lot for sharing this. I picked up the violin after a 25 year hiatus again and don't have the chance to get lessons like this next to life. This gives me a chance to take backseat lessons I would otherwise never get my hands on.

This video gave me such great joy. To have the opportunity of a Masterclass with Ray Chen is one thing but to have been able to record it is something of great value. I truly enjoyed his teaching technique with you. I saw how nervous you were at the beginning and then you blossomed as he helped you spread your wings and fly. You relaxed and I could see half way through how you allowed yourself to allow your emotions to release and simply enjoy the moment of musical connection between yourself and your teacher!
