    In Spring 2023, the British Government announced it had commandeered a floating barge called Bibby Stockholm to use as housing for asylum seekers. Human rights groups have called it a "floating prison". Here's the truth.

    My father came into the United States around 1930. He arrived at Ellis Island and they processed most immigrants on the day that they arrived. OK, half of the paperwork could be performed onboard ship before it arrives in New York. A simple clerk checked off the boxes, and if you passed you were given a Green Card and your were in. Today, there will be international computer checks before all of the boxes can be checked. Probably need a much higher level official doing what is essentially a clerk's job.

    • @CRneu
      @CRneu 4 місяці тому +8

      That quick processing also led to a boom in productivity for the United States. With the exception of the great depression, the US saw a massive workforce and productivity boom from the 1890s to the 1950s, largely because of our acceptance of immigrants.
      If you look at the US economy today, you'll find millions of vacant jobs in entry level positions, especially in agriculture and service industries. These jobs could very effectively be filled by immigrants looking to start their new lives in the United States. Instead, what you see are states like Florida/Texas clamping down on immigration while attempting to lower and remove child workforce laws. These child workforce laws exist to encourage children to go to school instead of dropping out and working.

      Well, to be fair, a lot of Asylum Seekers don’t have all their papers in order, and being a refugee isn’t the same as simply being an immigrant who’s seeking permission of residency!
      Today, if I want to work or study in the US or UK, I can start the application process without even leaving my home!
      But if you’re a refugee, there’s basically three ways;
      If you live in a UN affiliated refugee camp, you can be so lucky that you become one of a small number of UN quota refugee (this is most often families and single mothers with small kids, and if a kid is handicapped it increases the chances).
      Or you have to find a way to physically go to the country where you wanna apply for Asylum, and when arrived contact the border guards, police, or similar authority, and in most countries this involves some level of detainment, at least until the authorities has registered you and cleared that you’re not a wanted criminal or already has been denied Asylum or has an ongoing Asylum case being processed (example of this is in regards to the EU where we will look into if someone has been denied Asylum in another EU country, or if they are in an ongoing process, they will be sent back to the country currently processing their case).
      The third way is through family reunification programs, which are the reason why most Asylum seekers in European countries who turn up at borders quite often tend to be older teenagers, young men, and/or family fathers. They simply have higher chances of surviving the often extremely dangerous journeys that sometimes involves several boat crossings and harsh living conditions while waiting for a chance to get onboard a boat! If they are then granted asylum, as more than 80% of those applying is, they can then apply for their closest relatives to be allowed to join them, and then their families can take much safer routes as they’ve already been granted refugee status!
      Of course this is a very rough description of how it works!
      But it’s very different from people immigrating due to other causes!
      Of course there’s also people who simply want to immigrate who starts out on these dangerous journeys and who might end up in a boat with Asylum Seekers, but they’re usually sent back to their country of origin, (at least if we talk about how it works here in the EU)
      Occasionally there’s also individuals who is turned down for Asylum, but for various reasons, such as their country of origin refusing to accept them back, and unless they’re willing to go to another country that will accept them, they end up in a limbo - and how various EU countries deal with them varies a lot.
      My own country is probably among the worst as we put them in centers that are very much similar to low security prisons, one of the centers even used to be such a facility - and they then end up having to deal with basically criminals who are supposed to be expelled from my country, but for similar reasons can’t be!
      It used to be that asylum seekers who had been denied asylum, and criminals who had finished prison time, but for some reasons couldn’t be sent back to their country of origin (and occasionally due to no fault of their own), were allowed to live fairly normal lives, but then some media outlets and far-right politicians decided that it was something they could use and now even our SocDem is competing with the far-right in making conditions as intolerablere as possible, to the point where there at a time even was suggestions of more or less isolating them in facilities on an island that were last used as a research facility into dangerous viruses and bacterias!
      Oh, and my government is also pursuing the Rwanda idea, and another idea where they want to send prisoners who are going to get expelled from the country when they’ve finished their time in prison, to a prison in Kosova!
      It’s not like it will save any money, au contraire, it will most likely be more expensive in the end, as we are obliged to ensure they’re given similar standard as in one of our own prisons, including a similar level of healthcare, which probably only can be guaranteed by using expensive private hospitals in Kosova! So it’s all about political grand standing and showing that they’re "tough" on foreigners who commit crimes here…
      Also, some of those convicts they want to expel were infants when they arrived here, they’ve never known anything but my country and have wife and kids here - sure, they might identify as also being Syrians or Palestinians, but they have absolutely nothing down there aside from maybe a few distant relatives!
      (Yes, our laws has also been changed making it much easier to revoke their permission of residency, and even laws making it possible to revoke their citizenship - which should be illegal as it’s a form of extra punishment that doesn’t apply equally for everyone)…
      But anyway, sorry I went out on a tangent - I only intended to talk about how this issue with refugees arriving here in Europe is very different from traditional immigration, such as towards the USA nearly one hundred years ago!
      Oh, and that’s without even going into the tragic issue regarding the USA turning down high numbers of Jewish refugees from Germany in and around the same time or within a decade from when OP's dad arrived and was processed at Ellis Island!

    • @karljohannessen4436
      @karljohannessen4436 4 місяці тому +3

      If someone arriving at Ellis Island didn't meet immigration standards, it was the responsibility of the shipping company to return the immigrant to the port of origination - at no charge. The priamary consideration was overall health, especially communicable diseases. Therefor, the vetting process for immigrants primairly occured at the port of origination and it was conducted by the private sector. By the time they reached Ellis Island, most immigration candidates were deemed acceptable. Today's process isn't nearly this restrictive. Today's process is "come one, come all."

    This is a terrible idea. The amount of labor and money it takes to maintain a ferry that can only hold 400 passengers for about 15 minutes would be minuscule compared to the amount of resources it would take to house that many people. We are constantly cleaning and maintaining the vessel. Plus we are regularly doing safety drills and practicing for emergencies. I would be terrified even have a MOB when there are people who may not speak the same language. On a boat it is incredibly important for everyone to be able to communicate to avoid people dying.

Went after her family and everything.. it was some real unhinged shit by the sounds of it. Is *_she_* "abandoning" her homeland? I don't know _anyone_ who would put it that way other than perhaps a 14 year old trying to be edgy. Is that you?
      And besides, who says I owe my homeland anything? I pay my taxes, I volunteer, I vote, I'm a good upstanding citizen. That's what I owe. As far as I'm concerned, as long as people are giving life their best effort and doing what they can wherever they happen to reside at that moment.. well, that's all you can really do! Similarly, if a mother or father believes that moving to another country could provide a better life for their family, how the heck is that "deserting their family"? Needless to say, they were all exclusively retirees who haven't quite figured out yet that due to increibly poor infrastructure, the 20mph speed limit far exceeds what is possible during rush hour on Welsh roads and despite a handful of noisy English Tories being really upset on our behalf, it hasn't actually affected people all that much because when most people use the roads with the new limits on they were never going above 20mph anyway.

    This has been happening in Australia for decades. We have "off shore" detention centres in countries like Naru where the facilities are worse than gaols. The big end of town such as Serco loves these measures because they commonly get the contracts to run them at huge profit margins. Australia went as far as to excise its own islands from the country so people could not claim they made it to Australia so they could put them back on dangerous boats and send them back to wherever they came from. Compassion is a commodity that is in short supply these days especially with conservatives.

    The reference to "Years and Years" was spot on. Since I saw this series I'm amazed by its clairvoyance. The Erstwhile sites arc is frightening. Rook's speech about how the British invented the concentration camp in South Africa as a mean to cheaply and efficiently deal with prisoners is especially chilling.
    What is said about Conservatives' cynicism is true in France too. Macron was elected in 2017 as a progressive kindly liberal (in order to catch centrist and centre-leftist votes) but quickly moved to take hold of the right. He did so with policies and rhetoric usually identified as rightist. Our own Home Office minister (ministre de l'Intérieur) Gérald Darmanin comes from the far-right and is infamously a human-shaped piece of garbage, so much that his name has become a derogatory term. *
    Anyway, I'm really frightened as no alternative emerges and even left paries dance to the media music, which is a trip to the most base emotions on the public (to sum it up - there would be many things to say about how privately-owned media operate and how they shape democracy). This a strange and unsettling period.

    The saddest part about British politics is that as far as refugees and asylum seekers are concerned, neither party is any good. If you want to see the template of cruelty toward asylum seekers just look at what Blair did - voucher schemes for essential basics including food (TWICE! Because the first one was a disaster and both got scrapped), the construction of Yarls Wood detention centre and infecting the discourse around asylum with gestures towards "fairness" and cementing the notion of asylum seekers as split between 'the good ones who contribute to our society' and 'the bogus ones who need to be turfed out'. He wanted ID cards and started the conversation around the use of British Navy warships to intercept people traffickers and using RAF cargo transport planes to perform mass deportations with. He even asked the Attorney General if he could deport asylum seekers back to the last safe country they passed through under the Dublin Convention. He absolutely sowed the seeds which eventually bloomed into every major talking point of the new far right discourse around asylum seekers and refugees.

    There is the story, where 10 cookies are split between the rich and the poor. The rich takes 9 and hands one to the poor. Then he points to the strangers and says: "Look, they want a part of your cookie". People in Europe (and most likely the UK) are more and more afraid of loosing their quality of life. In the 1950-70s, they were rebuilding their destroyed countries. Higher education and better paying jobs became available to the "lower" classes resulting in a growing middle class. Even though the gap between the top 1% and the bottom 10% grew in the 1980s and early 90s, people still were optimistic. That has changed and it becomes harder and harder to "maintain" your social standing or to climb up the social ladder. So it becomes easier and easier for the "ruling class" to do what they have been doing since the dawn of time. Point to the evil outsiders and blame them for all those problems. Sadly, one of those groups are refugees.

      @@cryptbeast3222 In the US they can just nab you off the street and stuff you into a place like Riker's where you'll stay for years before trial. There was a famous case not long ago of an underage kid being kept in Riker's for 2 years before I believe he killed himself. He was nabbed for stealing his own backpack, and what's more, doing so while black. Doing anything while black is risky in the US so why this kid stole a backpack that was in fact his own backpack, and what's more while black, what was he thinking?

    • @cryptbeast3222

      @@alexcarter8807 I live in the US. The kid you are mentioning was simply taken as guilty without any actual evidence while returning home. He refused to bow to the accusations of the police, so they held him in prison. Most people in Rikers are there for being accused of a crime, not from being judged as criminals in court. In many cases in the US, black people are simply arrested and fucked with just because. I've been pulled over by police for problems that didn't exist, just because they wanted to mess with me. I've been taken and questioned for crimes I literally couldn't do because I wasn't in the area at the time. Yes, it's very scary knowing they can kill you, rape you or end up throwing you in prison while doing that.

      Capitalism is not an ideology, but simply an observation that by acquiring means production (investing capital) rather than spending on consumption, you can better your existence. There's nothing wrong with that per se. It becomes complicated when government (together with big capitalists) gets involved in preventing everyone else from using their capital as they see fit. As it inevitably does. But still better than communism, which doesn't even pretend not to rob you.

    You mention that the residents of the new jail ships "are not criminals." I would just point that most of the people who were 'transported' to the colonies in the 18th century were also not criminals, or not real criminals. They were victims of "the enclosure"- land grab by the rich that dislocated England's poor rural inhabitants, who were then hit with new "vagrancy" laws. Look poor and idle, you became a "vagrant" and got transported (or got conscripted for hellish work as sailors). Steal bread because you were hungry, you got "transported." Most of the "crimes" were due to extreme poverty.
