I took floral designing in a workshop in high school. Loved it, the teacher hired me for his own shop. I did weddings for people right out of high school.
Moved to LA worked for some great shops there and many celebrities and won over 27 first place awards for my designs.
Moved to CA, started my own business that merged into an event production company. Won designer of the year and started working for the like of the Fortune 500, and some huge companies.
We bought a big home and restored it with the money I made. My husband was able to stay at home and rebuild that property, I supported my husband, son and my husband’s father.
Sold that property and retired to Maine. California made it ridiculous to live there. I got out way before it got bad.
I was able to do this because of one of the many trade classes my high school offered, I learned to bake there as well. I took 3 trades offered there and was able to turn it into an income.
This needs to happen again, my in my sons age struggle with everything because they were not given the opportunities I was given. We need to bring this back asap!

On top of that we transitioned into health services. We have many who quit school because the high school wasn’t helping them. Many become entrepreneurs. Our Country ‘s school system is only transitioning to major Colleges. Luckily I live in a metropolis that is obscure. A lot of income comes from agriculture. Plus we have huge Tyson plants. 1. We need to stop telling every generation that comes by. “If you don’t go to college and get a four year degree, you’ll end up as the garbage man, working in the drive thru window at McDonalds etc”.
    2. We should encourage people to question whether they really need to go to College. If they are unsure, then delay it for at least a year and get a job in the meantime.
    3. We need to stop telling people to follow their passion and follow opportunity, for example a trade or joining the army.
    4. If people want to either get a promotion or an entry level position. They should not be made to pay for more “education”. They will acquire what they need by simply working the job.

Excellent comment! The other point is that learning one trade makes it easier to learn a different trade that may pay better. The first people to benefit from cable TV were phone line men. Cables were hung on the same poles but the pay was better and there was more work. Skills learned are transferable.

I said giving people (staff) equity in companies 35 years ago. It has to be real and they should never actually own shares but be allocated X% on meritocracy: and when they retire be paid out the then going market value. Every year one works for a company and truly are an "asset" your "shares" increase in number. It is of course a lot more nuanced than my simple explanation here... One more tidbit: Those "share" allocations could be used as equity to purchase a house. Thus expanding the economy.

One required 3o days of being on 24/7 on-call about 2 - 3 times a year having to wake up at 2:30am to fix problems, one didn't.
