  • This is why vehicles with automatic transmissions have parking brakes, even if they don’t operate as regular “emergency brakes”.

Came here bc my 05 explorer gets stuck in park on hills. Most my cars have been manual and I never had this problem before. Learned something new today

Perfect! So many people omit putting it in neutral and then taking your foot off the brake after engaging the parking brake. That's the only way to make sure the entire weight of the car is resting on the parking brake and none of the weight is on the parking pawl. So you don't have to overexert, and stretch, the cable to the transmission in order to disengage the parking pawl.

Hi, nice video and very informative. I recently purchased a pre owned QX80 and I noticed the clunking sound when shifting from park into reverse when parked in my driveway which has a slight incline. Do you suggest always using the parking brake each time I park in my driveway? Are there any negatives to not using the parking brake and just relying on the parking pawl and vice versa?

Hello sir. Thank you for the video. I have not used neutral. When I park, I keep my foot on the brake, put the vehicle in park, and then use the emergency brake. I release my foot from the brake after I use the emergency brake. Is that process good?

I think it works the same as my process because you have kept your foot on the brake.

No because there is still going to be that slight rocking after you release the brakes and will still cause the thud. Always use the emergency brake to hold the car in place before shifting to park
