The swivel on the butt of the little screwdrivers is meant to let you hold downward pressure with a finger from your off hand and then turn the shaft with your dominant hand. Keeps the dinky little screw slots from getting buggered.

I wondered afterwards if that was the reason it was there. Why it was hexagonal puzzled me a bit. Cheers Rob

    Hello Rob,
Indeed it will be handy for your glasses repairs... See you on the next one.
    Take care.

The damn screws fall out of my glasses all the time, but thankfully over here there is an optometrist only every corner, or at least that's what it seems. They are more than happy to replace the screw free of charge even if you didn't buy from them in the first place. 👍

Nice tool, the cap screws sticking out from the shaft reminded me of the head of Frankenstein. Clickspring of Antikythera mechanism reproduction fame uses a needle as a scribe to make fine layout lines. The needles seem to hold up well. Thank you for sharing!

There are not too many hard metal options when you get down to these dimensions. Cheers Rob

Nice job on the screwdriver Rob. Would never have thought of using a needle. When I took up this new hobby I made a scribe not unlike your screwdriver using a darning needle. Made the handle from brass. ATB Cheers Nobby

Hi Nobby. I did consider brass, but went ally as I had plenty in a close size. A needle for a fine scribe tip would be good. I made a regular scribe using a ground cement nail (very hard stuff) and it works well. All things are possible . Cheers Rob

@@Xynudu Hi Rob , I also have used a sharpend cement natl as a scribe and it works very well. It is very hard material. All the best.

Nice job Rob 👍👍 I'd assumed from the beginning that you were going to use grub screws to hold the blade as you'd mentioned cross drilling. Added bonus with that method is it's dead easy to change the screwdriver blade should you have too. Great idea to use a needle, just the right kind of steel, hard but also flexible. Cheers, Alan.

Hi Alan. I was originally going to cross drill it to prevent an air pocket when using Loctite. The fit was so sloppy it wasn't necessary, and didn't work anyway. So it still got cross drilled for a different reason. The end result is actually a lot better. There weren't too many hard steel options available to try, although a broken drill shank may have worked. So it got the needle. Cheers Rob

@@Xynudu I think the needle was a better bet. Drill bits of that diameter tend to be very short and break easily even when used for their original purpose. Cheers, Alan.

shoulda' use metal to make the handle and you'd have been able to solder it in. Nice maching 🙂

Yes, I did wonder about brass and stainless steel. Brass would have worked well as it can be knurled. Went with ally as I always had plan B in the back of my mind. Cheers Rob

Nice screwdriver Rob. You could use some Loctite on your glasses screws, then they wont come loose again. An added bonus is to laugh to yourself when you watch the people at the glasses place try to get the screws out...

Ha Ha. Yes, I did think about that. I will keep an eye on them and if things move again I will do as you say. Loctite works well in most situations. Too well ;) Cheers Rob

I had some glasses that I could not keep a screw in tight no matter how much I tightened it. I used blue loctite and it worked very well with giving the option of removing the screw.

Nice job, Rob. I hate working with fiddly small stuff. Mart.

      @Xynudu  6 місяців тому

Hi Mart. Yeah, this sure was fiddly. I also broke a tiny drill bit during the course of events. There's no way to re-sharpen them. I bought a tube of ten 1.1 mm drills for next to nothing recently off Ebay and they are actually quite good. I always wonder how people with big lathes get on trying to do this sort of work ;) Cheers Rob

Got there eventually Rob 👍 My glasses lost a screw a few months back, I have many tiny screwdrivers and a good collection of tiny screws but do you think I could find the right size🙄 Held together with very fine fencing wire till I rember to go to the glasses shop. They usually don't charge. Cheers mate 🍻

Hi Bill. Not unusual to have a screw loose ;) He He. This has happened a few times. A bit of bent wire or a pin does the job for while until the wobbly arm finally pisses me off and I see the optician. Such is life. Cheers Rob

🤔 The gradual decay of a loose screw vs the catastrophic failure of a tight one 🤣🍻
