  • Installed the CVP needle 45 pilot and 180 main to try to solve the lean backfire from factory settings. The intake seals have all been replaced as well.

My first HD was a Sportster 1200 Custom in the same color. Put 10K miles on it in one year, then sold it and got a 2001 Road King. Still riding that one!

Backfired is usually a leak in the intake manifold, spray starting fluid around it and see if the idle increases.

I've got a 98 dyna wide glide. I rebuilt carb and it had other issues, so I bought a new carb. I could have fix the issues on old one just didn't feel like it. However new one came with 42 low speed and 175 high speed. I had mix screw 3-3/4 turn out and it ran great but it had intake pop at very low rpm. So I rejetted to 48 low and 195 high and idle around 600 -700 rpm and mix screw 1-3/4 turn and it runs even better and no intake pop. I will probably fine tune it from here and put new plugs in.

On my 02 1200 I increased the main to a 195 and the low rpm jet I made it a 50 and increased the diameter of a couple of the the vacum holes on the main jet. it does 85 at 1/4 throlle also I set the timing by ear so there is no popping thru the exhaust when I decelerate just a even back pressure all this with straight pipes and a stock air cleaner. it has 120,000 mile on it now. and doing great other then needs new chrome and paint.

I have two 1995 bikes sportster /flt I started with plugs the champion plugs are JUNK use Autolite plugs to start they took most of the Lean pop out (backfire through the carb ) later on I removed the seal plug over the idle mixture screw and adjusted it runs great CV performance has many great products I have used them myself

Very poor off idle response, check your intake manifold for leakage of vacuum, tighten bolts at manifold and cylinder head, or replace manifold gaskets/seals; this condition may cause backfire and or poor throttle response.

Thanks for the tips guys. I had the mixture screw at 3 turns in this video. I now have it at 4 and 1/4 out. It still pops through the intake if I blip the throttle off of a decel. The slide is pretty worn in it as well. I am gonna buy a nee slide and dump a 48 pilot in this spring and see what happens. It still gets 50mpg with the current setup. Just that lean back fire sucks. Intake seals are new. I am guessing the worn slide is allowing too much air leaking past it.

I sold this bike this summer and upgraded to a softail standard. I did bump the timing up after this video a few degrees and rode it with the cover off and a screwdriver and kept advancing the timing while riding it. I did get the backfire to stop 99.9% of the time after advancingthw timing. I had to make it do it, by coming off a long deceleration then pull the clutch in and blip the throttle to make it happen, and even then it would only do it once in a while. Normal riding conditions never made it backfire after the riming advancement. However, having to do it again, I would have went 2 sizes up on the slow jet to begin with. I believe that it was still a fuzz lean.

FYI idle jets in the cv carb has emulsion tube and the holes are to small. it allows globs of fuel to occur and globs only burn on the outside. it mimics a lean condition. to many people drown the idle in fuel with bigger jetting to stop the " sneeze" . CV carbs are prone to " sneezing" from this emulsion tube issue.. I use a finger drill and open those emulsion tube hole in idle jet, breaking the fuel into smaller bits and thus burning more completely and alleviating the sneeze.. no parts needed to fix this... just a finger drill slightly larger then the original holes. NO smoke should be seen from exhaust. your're too rich if u see smoke..

If the carb has pump adjustment screw backed off. You will need adjust in until Cough is gone and instant response is consistent. You've made
    All good mods. However
    The altitude where your
    At will determine the best
Jet sizes. To get best results in performance
    You will need to
    (STREET TUNE) OR (DYNO)
    until YOUR HAPPY.🏁😎

I still hear stumble when wacking the throttle. Could be idle too low. I had same problem and did everything to carb and still wasn't happy. Went out and spent the money for a S&S and after about 20 minutes of adjustments had that bike running perfect. It was like a different bike. I've been told a Mikuni carburetor is good also at a lower price. Just know that S&S is awesome.

Try re-adjusting the idle back and see if that changes the sputter. If that does not do it, then turn the fuel mixture all the way back in till it stops easy though. Then turn it 1 1/2 turn out. Start the bike. At the point of being warm turn the 1/2 turns then rev the engine a little. At each time listen for the sputter then turn back a 1/4 turn. This should do the trick! Then replace plugs with a pair of Pulstar Plugs, these will give more kick and go!

Put mine in yesterday and it rocks. My idle is purrrfect. So what I've found is after you tune as best you can sitting, ride and feel your acceleration. If it hesitates accelerating, counter clockwise on the mix, rinse and repeat, slowly dialing it in.. Also, it seems like it gets better as you ride as well.

  • @weedlysr
    @weedlysr 8 років тому +1

I had the exact same situation on the exact same bike, with the same pipes and air cleaner. I found that the mix screw affects idle to 1/8 throttle turn, 1/8, 1/8 to 1/4 throttle turn is affected by the pilot jet, 1/4 to 3/4 is affected by the position of the fuel needle and 3/4 to wide open throttle is controlled by the main. It seems to me that if you shim the fuel needle with the smallest washer you can find at your local hardware shop that WILL cure your sputter and your bike will run like a bat out of hell!

Sounds a little lean. My softail did the same thing tho. I rebuilt it and re jet it and I could never get it to run right until I went with the s&s carb. Put the s&s on you won’t regret it. But some good jetting should do. It depends on the elevation where you live too

I know u said you sold it but just for other people out there who may also have this issue ..check for vacuume leaks ..with the air cleaner on spray carb cleaner around the manifold and heads/carb and see if your rpms jump ..a vac leak will give you this kind of problem ..take care and ride safe

    • @marvelharris9540

Exactly right... compensating with a 48 idle jet is ridiculous..... and 4 turns out tells you something is wrong and is usually a vacuum leak somewhere in the chain.

I have an 06 1200 custom sportster although sportster is the Harleys they all have that sound to them but I hear the mess. Did you totally drain the gas out and make sure you have to use high test in those 1200s, if you put regular gas in there the octane may be making that this is only my guess from just watching the videoBut the bike sure does look like a beauty. If it was me I totally get every bit of gas out of there get some carburetor spray and it was a video on line I forget who it was but he actually took the carburetor part and it was one tiny little office that you put a real fine hair thread piece of wire through and that heavy I was doing a bike I think it was Rocco if I’m not mistaken he has UA-cam but make sure that gas is new and it’s high test not regular

Okay, heres where we are at. Your fuel mixture is good, so leave it be, now go and turn your air screw in 1/4 turn. You do have a hesitation on rev, and thats because of too much air, so turn that air mixture in as I told you.

My advice friend is to bin the stock CV carb and fit a Mikuni HS 40 flatslide. Around 15% better gas mileage and 5 to 10 increase in power. Smooth and fast acceleration which is noticeable for sure. No matter what you do with a CV carb there is always a lag in pick up, no offence but yours is poor and baulking before revving up. I did the HS40 conversion on my 96 1200 sport and it transformed the bike. You will need to buy or make a new filter backing plate and fit the bellmouth, available in alloy or plastic. The HS40 sits a little lower which is why you need to modify the back plate and use a free flow filter. Hope it helps.

I agree the Mikuni is better than the CV carburetor, but skip the 40 mm and he should go with the hsr 42 mm

You definitely want the mikuni carb. If you have the money go order you one and have an actual bike mechanic dial that new carb in unless you have a bunch of experience tuning carbs. I had a mikuni, I think it was a hsr42? on my 93 1200 and after it got tuned by a mechanic it ran like nothing else before, absolute perfection.

You had it all wrong and are still all wrong. The three truns out on the fuel mixture was perfect, your problem was too much air and you needed to only turn your air screw in 1/4 in. The fuel screw is only good if the air screw is set correct. You had rev heistaion in the video and that only needed to be turned in (air screw and not fuel screw), so all you did is watse lots of time instead of doing that 1/4 turn in on the air screw
