  • A short clip on how my Talharpa's sound with nylon strings and horse hair bows. Horse Hair is more authentic sound, but nylon is more durable for learning the instrument.

I'm actually impressed that you can get decent volume from a single nylon string. I would expect to have the bow slip on the smooth nylon. I also like to see that you are not simply copying a common design, but keeping the classic anglo-saxon lyre shape in a bowed format. I think it really gives a nice, comfortable look and feel to it.

Instead of using single strand on each string, try several strands on each string, for example, take 0.25 mm or somewhere around 0.2mm thickness, take 20,30 and 40 strands for each string, glue them in one end,tie a knot, attach it to the tailpiece and start twisting, all in the same direction. That way the sound gets a bit "thicker" instead of using one strand on each string...Just a tip! ;)

I always add extra strings just in case people want to twist the nylon for thicker strings. I however, like single strings unless its horse hair :) Thanks for the information, and your a very good Musician as well.. love your channel :)

@@Gnomewoodworker Thx,i aint much of a performer/musician,just improv, but i try to master the basics of what i build,so i can demonstrate them to people who are interested in them,- live and youtube. And i take nylon over horsehair strings everytime, since nylon dont break, stays tuned and its little to no difference in the sound quality.
