  • @TexasHart
    @TexasHart 3 місяці тому +1

    Salty… I’m new to your channel, but I’ve been watching your reactions all night long. You’re very entertaining and reflective and wise. The mistake you made here is not knowing Beyoncé’s following. You know that Tom has the #HOG, but, as you have now learned, Beyoncé has the BeyHive. And they are fierce and ferocious. An older, white gentleman was not going to fare well ANY which way he reviewed this song. I think Beyoncé did herself a disservice by seemingly not actually putting out a VIDEO for this song, when it came out, rather just the same repeat video short that played again and again and again. As the BeyHive wants you to understand, respect, and know EVERYTHING about Bey and her approach to music, I think that there needs to be a mutual understanding given. “Country” music is a broad genre. That term encompasses a lot. The things they are saying, many of them are true. But, what you are saying is true, as well… my late Grandfather was a cowboy of the American Midwest… he NEVER would have driven a vehicle that wasn’t “Made in the USA.” That’s just how he was. So, where they want you to respect their culture and what it brings to the genre, they also need to show respect from where you come, and what you bring to the table. Going forward, know that the BeyHive has a reputation for this behavior; learn from appropriate feedback, and dismiss all others. Also, know that if you ever do a review of ANYTHING Taylor Swift, the Swifties are as hard and furious, if not more so.
    Keep doing what you do! We enjoy it. Now, I’d like to enjoy some brisket with ya…

    Besides Dolly being Dolly, and Willie singin' his classics, along with a select few interesting and genre-defiant souls, country has pretty much been straight trash since the Outlaws started fading out of favor to make way for overproduced, pristinely polished nonsense.
    It's the empty calories, the high fructose corn syrup of music. And holy hell, the "country-rap" (which is neither real country nor good rap) has to stop before they get so cringey that the genre slowly loses more and more depth, meaning, and subtlety until it just ceases to have any dimensionality to it at all.
    I honestly saw it as such a bold move in today's country market (it shouldn't have been, but thats a whole different subject to unpack) that I didn't really care how it sounded. I wanted it to be a great album just because I like seeing great work being done in music, period. But honestly, I mostly was just excited that it was going to A) get people talking about country as a whole society for the first time in a while, as well as have conversations about its history and what it's really about which needed to be discussed, and B) shake the industry up in an interesting way that only someone at the top of their respective genre switching lanes and taking on something new could do.
    What do I think of the album? It's... fine. Not special, not terrible, although far below the level of quality Beyonce is capable of in her specialties. But it didn't put me off or make me want to chuck my radio out the window of the truck like most of the Stadium Country-era and aforementioned country-rap trash has. That stuff, the folks Bo Burnham made fun of in his Country Song send-up, is a legitimate disgrace to the genre because it goes against everything it stood for throughout most of its history: instead of being honest, earnest, well-crafted tales of everyday people's lives and struggles and heartaches and victories, it became profit-driven buzzword madlibs to a tune sung by city boys who were introduced to Hank Williams's music as 30-somethings and found it too old and stuffy. That shit aimed at the ground and it still wasn't far enough down to hit the lowest hanging fruit, but it sure did bottom out in... y'know... any meaning or substance or actual lived experience referenced.
    So no, I'm not a fan of the album. But I'm not mad at it either. It stands right smack dab in "meh" territory, exactly in the middle, unremarkable and not moving the needle in any way, good or bad. But I also think it certainly doesn't deserve nearly the hate it's gotten, especially compared to the absolute dumpster fires masquerading as "down home" for the past 20 years ago in the mainstream, "Nashville by way of LA" garbage that the radio has been playing since the 90s. That stuff is truly offensive to me, because it goes against what it was always about: four chords and the truth. The fact that the bar is that low in the first place that this album even became so much of a cultural milestone is a really troubling sign for country music and its ability to survive as a genre at all. It shouldn't have been this big a deal. But it was because of the absolutely bottom-barrel state of the music industry, and especially the country music sector. That needs to be addressed more, and nobody wants to do it because for some reason, garbage can be peddled as gold to the masses and they still fall for it every damn time.

    I'm not sure what the big deal is here. Imo Shania Twain is pop music and when she came on the scene I stopped listening to Country altogether. As far as Beyonce's song sounding like the Franklin theme, they do sound a lot a like and the Franklin people may sue her, but tons of music from all genre's begs, borrows, or steals from other songs and Salty you know this. Tons of country songs sound alike, partly because Nashville has a formula and musician's must work within that formula, although a few like Willie and Waylon bucked that system to great success. This is all much ado about nothing. Salty, truthfully I think you're just trying to jump on the "cOnTrOvErSy" bandwagon to get views, I don't think you care one way or another. I mean, there are so many genre's these days that are mixing together like Country Metal (or Alternative Country) like Hank Williams III plays, or Country Rap, see the artist Mini Thin, so for people to get upset because 1 person says "this isn't country music" is strange, and I don't really think anyone cares, people just need controversy on their UA-cam channels or on the internet because it sparks more interest, i.e. there's no such thing as 'bad press'. I used to play live music and I wrote songs and recorded them, so I gave Beyonce's song a whirl. It's pretty good, good music, good lyrics, although the music does sound a lot like the Franklin theme. The only thing I really didn't like is the graphic video on UA-cam where she's basically topless except for a jacket. Some of the album art is also risqué. Does every female musical artist (usually Pop) have to dress like a prostitute these days?! That's what really pissed me off about it.

    Everyone is getting so uptight over a song from a 42-year-old superstar pop artist trying another genre, even referring to the music as 'cartoon country.' It is not as if a country placed a crew on Mars before the US or has surpassed the US to become the sole superpower. How will they react 40-50 years from now when they will have more 'country' performers from a more diverse nation, and many will win country song of the year even if that same song would not be called country by anyone today?

      Yeah... Nah... 😂😂😂😂
      Remember when people told Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings and others very similar things in the 70s and 80s? And how they're hailed as heroes of the genre now? "Stay in your lane" gets you the exact boring, unoriginal, pandering bullshit nonsense that's been on country radio since Achy Breaky Heart and Shelton's ilk made a mockery of everything the music had stood for til then, and fed into this Us vs. Them fake patriotic trash instead of people just doing what came naturally and authentically to them... Which meant staying in their lane, but also not giving a shit who else's lane they might meet or cross in the process. Back then they just wrote the honest music that came right from the soul, made for good, honest folks; which hasn't happened on country radio in decades now. At least she's bringing some authenticity by doing her own version of it, even if I don't really like it. I respect that, which I can't say about literally any artist on big market country stations right now. They're all pandering to sell more albums to sell more tickets to make more money for the labels and Ticketmaster, and they have no problem selling their souls to do it. Probably because they didn't have much of one to begin with.

      There is nothing bluegrass-based about this song. The banjo is a nylon-strung, fretless banjo played in the traditional claw hammer style more akin to Appalachian folk and traditional African style. This song is neither of those styles either. A bluegrass banjo is a steel-strung banjo typically played in the 3-finger style. The only thing country about the song is it has a typical folksy chord progression. Melodically it is not a country, the way the instrumentation play off of each other isn't country. If you listened to any actual country or bluegrass you would hear the difference. At best the song is country-inspired. It is recorded, produced, and sung well but not particularly great.
